מַשְׂכִּילa maskilלְאָסָףof AsaphלָמָהwhyאֱלֹהִיםO Godזָנַחְתָּhave You cast us offלָנֶצַחforeverיֶעְשַׁןdoes smokeאַפְּךָYour angerבְּצֹאןagainst the sheep ofמַרְעִיתֶךָ׃Your pasture
Maschil of Asaph. O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?

זְכֹרrememberעֲדָתְךָYour congregationקָנִיתָYou have purchasedקֶּדֶםof oldגָּאַלְתָּYou have redeemedשֵׁבֶטthe rod ofנַחֲלָתֶךָYour inheritanceהַר־צִיּוֹןmount ZionזֶהthisשָׁכַנְתָּYou have dweltבּוֹ׃in it
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.

הָרִימָהlift upפְעָמֶיךָYour stepsלְמַשֻּׁאוֹתto the ruinsנֶצַחperpetualכׇּל־הֵרַעall the evil done byאוֹיֵבthe enemyבַּקֹּדֶשׁ׃in the sanctuary
Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.

שָׁאֲגוּthey roaredצֹרְרֶיךָYour enemiesבְּקֶרֶבin the midst ofמוֹעֲדֶךָYour meeting placeשָׂמוּthey set upאוֹתֹתָםtheir signsאֹתוֹת׃for signs
Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.

יִוָּדַעit seemedכְּמֵבִיאas one who liftsלְמָעְלָהupwardבִּסְבׇךְ־עֵץin a thicket of treesקַרְדֻּמּוֹת׃axes
A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.

(ועת)[וְעַתָּה]and nowפִּתּוּחֶיהָits carved workיָּחַדaltogetherבְּכַשִּׁילwith hatchetוְכֵילַפּוֹתand hammersיַהֲלֹמוּן׃they break down
But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.

שִׁלְחוּthey have setבָאֵשׁon fireמִקְדָּשֶׁךָYour sanctuaryלָאָרֶץto the groundחִלְּלוּthey have profanedמִשְׁכַּן־שְׁמֶךָ׃the dwelling place of Your name
They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground.

אָמְרוּthey saidבְלִבָּםin their heartנִינָםlet us destroy themיָחַדtogetherשָׂרְפוּthey have burned upכׇל־מוֹעֲדֵי־אֵלall the appointed feasts of Godבָּאָרֶץ׃in the land
They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.

אוֹתֹתֵינוּour signsלֹא־רָאִינוּwe do not seeאֵין־עוֹדthere is no moreנָבִיאa prophetוְלֹא־אִתָּנוּnor is there among usיֹדֵעַany who knowsעַד־מָה׃how long
We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.

עַד־מָתַיuntil whenאֱלֹהִיםO Godיְחָרֶףshall reproachצָרthe adversaryיְנָאֵץshall blasphemeאוֹיֵבthe enemyשִׁמְךָYour nameלָנֶצַח׃forever
O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?

לָמָּהwhyתָשִׁיבdo You withdrawיָדְךָYour handוִימִינֶךָand Your right handמִקֶּרֶבfrom the midst of[חֵיקְךָ]Your bosomכַלֵּה׃consume them
Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.

וֵאלֹהִיםyet God isמַלְכִּיmy Kingמִקֶּדֶםfrom of oldפֹּעֵלworkingיְשׁוּעוֹתsalvation inבְּקֶרֶבthe midst ofהָאָרֶץ׃the earth
For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

אַתָּהYouפוֹרַרְתָּYou dividedבְעׇזְּךָby Your strengthיָםthe seaשִׁבַּרְתָּYou brokeרָאשֵׁיthe heads ofתַנִּינִיםsea monstersעַל־הַמָּיִם׃upon the waters
Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.

אַתָּהYouרִצַּצְתָּYou crushedרָאשֵׁיthe heads ofלִוְיָתָןLeviathanתִּתְּנֶנּוּYou gave himמַאֲכׇלas foodלְעָםto the peopleלְצִיִּים׃inhabiting the wilderness
Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.

אַתָּהYouבָקַעְתָּYou cleaved openמַעְיָןfountainוָנָחַלand floodאַתָּהYouהוֹבַשְׁתָּYou dried upנַהֲרוֹתriversאֵיתָן׃ever-flowing
Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.

לְךָYours isיוֹםdayאַף־לְךָYours also isלָיְלָהthe nightאַתָּהYouהֲכִינוֹתָhave preparedמָאוֹרthe lightוָשָׁמֶשׁ׃and the sun
The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.

אַתָּהYouהִצַּבְתָּhave setכׇּל־גְּבוּלוֹתall the borders ofאָרֶץthe earthקַיִץsummerוָחֹרֶףand winterאַתָּהYouיְצַרְתָּם׃have made them
Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.

זְכׇר־זֹאתremember thisאוֹיֵבthe enemyחֵרֵףhas reproachedיְהֹוָהO LORDוְעַםand a peopleנָבָלfoolishנִאֲצוּhave blasphemedשְׁמֶךָ׃Your name
Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.

אַל־תִּתֵּןdo not deliverלְחַיַּתto the wild beastנֶפֶשׁthe soul ofתּוֹרֶךָYour turtledoveחַיַּתthe life ofעֲנִיֶּיךָYour poorאַל־תִּשְׁכַּחforget notלָנֶצַח׃forever
O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever.
20
הַבֵּטhave regardלַבְּרִיתto the covenantכִּיforמָלְאוּare full ofמַחֲשַׁכֵּי־אֶרֶץthe dark places of the earthנְאוֹתthe habitations ofחָמָס׃violence
Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.

אַל־יָשֹׁבlet not returnדַּךְthe oppressedנִכְלָםashamedעָנִיlet the poorוְאֶבְיוֹןand needyיְהַלְלוּpraiseשְׁמֶךָ׃Your name
O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name.

קוּמָהariseאֱלֹהִיםO GodרִיבָהpleadרִיבֶךָYour own causeזְכֹרrememberחֶרְפָּתְךָhow You are reproachedמִנִּי־נָבָלby the foolish manכׇּל־הַיּוֹם׃all the day
Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.
23
אַל־תִּשְׁכַּחdo not forgetקוֹלthe voice ofצֹרְרֶיךָYour enemiesשְׁאוֹןthe tumult ofקָמֶיךָthose who rise against Youעֹלֶהascendsתָמִיד׃continually
Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually.
