   שִׁירa songהַמַּעֲלוֹתof ascentsלִשְׁלֹמֹהof Solomonאִם־יְהֹוָהunless the LORDלֹא־יִבְנֶהbuildsבַיִתthe houseשָׁוְאin vainעָמְלוּlaborבוֹנָיוits buildersבּוֹin itאִם־יְהֹוָהunless the LORDלֹא־יִשְׁמׇר־עִירkeeps the cityשָׁוְאin vainשָׁקַדstays awakeשׁוֹמֵר׃the watchman

   A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

   שָׁוְאit is vainלָכֶםfor youמַשְׁכִּימֵיyou who rise earlyקוּםto ariseמְאַחֲרֵי־שֶׁבֶתwho sit up lateאֹכְלֵיwho eatלֶחֶםbreadהָעֲצָבִיםof sorrowsכֵּןsoיִתֵּןHe givesלִידִידוֹto his beloved oneשֵׁנָא׃sleep

   It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

   הִנֵּהbeholdנַחֲלַתa heritage fromיְהֹוָהthe LORDבָּנִיםchildren areשָׂכָרis a rewardפְּרִיthe fruit ofהַבָּטֶן׃the womb

   Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

   כְּחִצִּיםas arrowsבְּיַד־גִּבּוֹרin the hand of a mighty manכֵּןso areבְּנֵיthe children ofהַנְּעוּרִים׃the youth

   As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

   אַשְׁרֵיblessed areהַגֶּבֶרis the manאֲשֶׁרwhichמִלֵּאhas filledאֶת־אַשְׁפָּתוֹhis quiverמֵהֶםwith themלֹא־יֵבֹשׁוּshall not be ashamedכִּי־יְדַבְּרוּbut they shall speak withאֶת־אוֹיְבִיםthe enemiesבַּשָּׁעַר׃in the gate

   Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
