   שִׁירa songהַמַּעֲלוֹתof ascentsלְדָוִדof Davidלוּלֵיif it had not beenיְהֹוָהthe LORDשֶׁהָיָהwho wasלָנוּon our sideיֹאמַר־נָאlet now sayיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

   A Song of degrees of David. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;

   לוּלֵיif it had not beenיְהֹוָהthe LORDשֶׁהָיָהwho wasלָנוּon our sideבְּקוּםwhen rose upעָלֵינוּagainst usאָדָם׃man

   If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

   אֲזַיthenחַיִּיםaliveבְּלָעוּנוּthey had swallowed us upבַּחֲרוֹתwhen was kindledאַפָּםtheir wrathבָּנוּ׃against us

   Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

   אֲזַיthenהַמַּיִםthe watersשְׁטָפוּנוּhad overwhelmed usנַחְלָהthe streamעָבַרhad goneעַל־נַפְשֵׁנוּ׃over our soul

   Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

   אֲזַיthenעָבַרhad goneעַל־נַפְשֵׁנוּover our soulהַמַּיִםthe watersהַזֵּידוֹנִים׃the proud

   Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

   בָּרוּךְblessed beיְהֹוָהthe LORDשֶׁלֹּאwho has notנְתָנָנוּgiven usטֶרֶףas a preyלְשִׁנֵּיהֶם׃to their teeth

   Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

7. 7

   נַפְשֵׁנוּour soulכְּצִפּוֹרlike a birdנִמְלְטָהhas escapedמִפַּחout of the snare ofיוֹקְשִׁיםthe fowlersהַפַּחthe snareנִשְׁבָּרis brokenוַאֲנַחְנוּand weנִמְלָטְנוּ׃are escaped

   Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

8. 8

   עֶזְרֵנוּour help isבְּשֵׁםin the name ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDעֹשֵׂהwho madeשָׁמַיִםthe heavensוָאָרֶץ׃and earth

   Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
