1. 1

   מֹאזְנֵיbalances ofמִרְמָהdeceitתּוֹעֲבַתan abomination beforeיְהֹוָהthe LORDוְאֶבֶןand a weightשְׁלֵמָהcompleteרְצוֹנוֹ׃His delight

   A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

2. 2

   בָּא־זָדוֹןwhen pride comesוַיָּבֹאand cameקָלוֹןshameוְאֶת־צְנוּעִיםand modest peopleחׇכְמָה׃wisdom

   When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

3. 3

   תֻּמַּתthe integrity ofיְשָׁרִיםthe uprightתַּנְחֵםshall guide themוְסֶלֶףand the crookedness ofבֹּגְדִיםtreacherous people[יְשׇׁדֵּם]׃it destroys them

   The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.

   לֹא־יוֹעִילnot profitsהוֹןwealthבְּיוֹםin the day ofעֶבְרָהfuryוּצְדָקָהand righteousnessתַּצִּילdeliversמִמָּוֶת׃from death

   Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.

   צִדְקַתrighteousness ofתָּמִיםthe perfectתְּיַשֵּׁרshall directדַּרְכּוֹhis wayוּבְרִשְׁעָתוֹand by his wickednessיִפֹּלshall fallרָשָׁע׃wicked

   The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

6. 6

   צִדְקַתrighteousness ofיְשָׁרִיםthe uprightתַּצִּילֵםit delivers themוּבְהַוַּתand by the craving ofבֹּגְדִיםtreacherous peopleיִלָּכֵדוּ׃they are caught

   The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.

7. 7

   בְּמוֹתin the death ofאָדָםmanרָשָׁעwickedתֹּאבַדis lostתִּקְוָהhopeוְתוֹחֶלֶתand the hope ofאוֹנִיםof the unjustאָבָדָה׃it perishes

   When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.

8. 8

   צַדִּיקrighteousמִצָּרָהfrom troubleנֶחֱלָץis deliveredוַיָּבֹאand cameרָשָׁעwickedתַּחְתָּיו׃in his stead

   The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.

9. 9

   בְּפֶהby the mouthחָנֵףa hypocriteיַשְׁחִתhe ruinsרֵעֵהוּhis neighborוּבְדַעַתand with knowledgeצַדִּיקִיםthe righteousיֵחָלֵצוּ׃they are delivered

   An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

10. 10

    בְּטוּבon the goodness ofצַדִּיקִיםthe righteousתַּעֲלֹץrejoicesקִרְיָהa townוּבַאֲבֹדand when perishרְשָׁעִיםwicked menרִנָּה׃there is shouting

    When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

11. 11

    בְּבִרְכַּתby the blessing ofיְשָׁרִיםthe uprightתָּרוּםis exaltedקָרֶתthe townוּבְפִיand in the mouth ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menתֵּהָרֵס׃it is torn down

    By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

12. 12

    בׇּז־לְרֵעֵהוּhe who despises his neighborחֲסַר־לֵבlacking senseוְאִישׁand a manתְּבוּנוֹתunderstandingיַחֲרִישׁ׃he will keep silent

    He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.

13. 13

    הוֹלֵךְgoingרָכִילa slandererמְגַלֶּה־סּוֹדreveals a secretוְנֶאֱמַן־רוּחַand one faithful of spiritמְכַסֶּהone who concealsדָבָר׃a thing

    A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

14. 14

    בְּאֵיןwhere there is noתַּחְבֻּלוֹתwise directionsיִפׇּל־עָםthe people fallוּתְשׁוּעָהand safetyבְּרֹבin the multitude ofיוֹעֵץ׃counselors

    Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

15. 15

    רַע־יֵרוֹעַhe shall surely smartכִּי־עָרַבbecause he stood surety forזָרa strangerוְשֹׂנֵאand one who hatesתֹקְעִיםthose striking handsבּוֹטֵחַ׃is secure

    He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.

16. 16

    אֵשֶׁת־חֵןa gracious womanתִּתְמֹךְshe lays hold ofכָּבוֹדhonorוְעָרִיצִיםand ruthless peopleיִתְמְכוּ־עֹשֶׁר׃they take hold of riches

    A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.

17. 17

    גֹּמֵלis dealing bountifully withנַפְשׁוֹhis soulאִישׁa manחָסֶדmercyוְעֹכֵרand is troublingשְׁאֵרוֹhis relativeאַכְזָרִי׃cruel

    The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.

18. 18

    רָשָׁעwickedעֹשֶׂהworksפְעֻלַּת־שָׁקֶרthe working of falseוְזֹרֵעַand one who sowsצְדָקָהrighteousnessשֶׂכֶרa reward ofאֱמֶת׃truth

    The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.

19. 19

    כֵּן־צְדָקָהso righteousnessלְחַיִּיםto lifeוּמְרַדֵּףand one who pursuesרָעָהevilלְמוֹתוֹ׃to his death

    As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

20. 20

    תּוֹעֲבַתan abomination beforeיְהֹוָהthe LORDעִקְּשֵׁי־לֵבperverse people of heartוּרְצוֹנוֹand his willתְּמִימֵיpeople blameless ofדָרֶךְ׃a path

    They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.

21. 21

    יָדhandלְיָדto handלֹא־יִנָּקֶהnot he will go unpunishedרָּעthe wickedוְזֶרַעand the seed ofצַדִּיקִיםthe righteousנִמְלָט׃he will be delivered

    Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

22. 22

    נֶזֶםa ring ofזָהָבgoldבְּאַףin the snout ofחֲזִירwild boarאִשָּׁהa womanיָפָהbeautifulוְסָרַתand withoutטָעַם׃discretion

    As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

23. 23

    תַּאֲוַתdesire ofצַדִּיקִיםthe righteousאַךְ־טוֹבbut goodתִּקְוַתa hope ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menעֶבְרָה׃fury

    The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

24. 24

    יֵשׁthere isמְפַזֵּרis one who scattersוְנוֹסָףand yet increasesעוֹדany moreוְחֹשֵׂךְand one who restrainsמִיֹּשֶׁרmore than is meetאַךְ־לְמַחְסוֹר׃but to want

    There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

25. 25

    נֶפֶשׁ־בְּרָכָהthe liberal soulתְדֻשָּׁןhe will be made fatוּמַרְוֶהand he who watersגַּם־הוּאalso heיוֹרֶא׃shall be watered

    The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

26. 26

    מֹנֵעַone who withholdsבָּרgrainיִקְּבֻהוּshall curse himלְאוֹםthe peopleוּבְרָכָהand blessingלְרֹאשׁthe head ofמַשְׁבִּיר׃one who sells grain

    He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

27. 27

    שֹׁחֵרone who seeks diligentlyטוֹבgoodיְבַקֵּשׁseeksרָצוֹןfavorוְדֹרֵשׁand one who enquiresרָעָהevilתְבוֹאֶנּוּ׃it will come to him

    He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.

28. 28

    בּוֹטֵחַis secureבְּעׇשְׁרוֹin his richesהוּאheיִפּוֹלshall fallוְכֶעָלֶהand as a branchצַדִּיקִיםthe righteousיִפְרָחוּ׃they will bud

    He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

29. 29

    עֹכֵרhe who troublesבֵּיתוֹhis houseיִנְחַל־רוּחַshall inherit the windוְעֶבֶדand the servant ofאֱוִילfoolלַחֲכַם־לֵב׃of the wise of heart

    He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.

30. 30

    פְּרִי־צַדִּיקthe fruit of the righteousעֵץa treeחַיִּיםlifeוְלֹקֵחַand one who takesנְפָשׁוֹתsoulsחָכָם׃wise

    The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

31. 31

    הֵןbeholdצַדִּיקrighteousבָּאָרֶץin the landיְשֻׁלָּםhe is rewardedאַףmoreoverכִּי־רָשָׁעbecause wickedוְחוֹטֵא׃and the sinner

    Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.
