1. 1

   מִשְׁלֵיthe proverbs ofשְׁלֹמֹהSolomonבֵּןa sonחָכָםwiseיְשַׂמַּח־אָבmakes a father gladוּבֵןand a sonכְּסִילfoolishתּוּגַתthe grief ofאִמּוֹ׃his mother

   The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

2. 2

   לֹא־יוֹעִילוּdo not profitאוֹצְרוֹתthe treasures ofרֶשַׁעwickednessוּצְדָקָהand righteousnessתַּצִּילdeliversמִמָּוֶת׃from death

   Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

3. 3

   לֹא־יַרְעִיבnot he allows to hungerיְהֹוָהthe LORDנֶפֶשׁsoulצַדִּיקrighteousוְהַוַּתand the craving ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menיֶהְדֹּף׃he rejects

   The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

4. 4

   רָאשׁbecomes poorעֹשֶׂהwho deals withכַף־רְמִיָּהa slack handוְיַדand the hand ofחָרוּצִיםindustriousתַּעֲשִׁיר׃it gains riches

   He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

   אֹגֵרone who gathersבַּקַּיִץin the summerבֵּןa sonמַשְׂכִּילwiseנִרְדָּםhe who sleepsבַּקָּצִירin the harvestבֵּןa sonמֵבִישׁ׃who causes shame

   He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

   בְּרָכוֹתblessingsלְרֹאשׁthe head ofצַדִּיקrighteousוּפִיand the mouth ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menיְכַסֶּהcoversחָמָס׃violence

   Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

7. 7

   זֵכֶרthe remembrance ofצַדִּיקrighteousלִבְרָכָהis for a blessingוְשֵׁםand the name ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menיִרְקָב׃it will rot

   The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

8. 8

   חֲכַם־לֵבthe wise in heartיִקַּחwill receiveמִצְוֺתthe commandments ofוֶאֱוִילand a fool ofשְׂפָתַיִםlipsיִלָּבֵט׃he will be ruined

   The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

9. 9

   הוֹלֵךְgoingבַּתֹּםin integrityיֵלֶךְwalksבֶּטַחsecurityוּמְעַקֵּשׁand one who pervertsדְּרָכָיוhis waysיִוָּדֵעַ׃he will become known

   He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

10. 10

    קֹרֵץhe is winkingעַיִןeyeיִתֵּןcausesעַצָּבֶתsorrowוֶאֱוִילand a fool ofשְׂפָתַיִםlipsיִלָּבֵט׃he will be ruined

    He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.

11. 11

    מְקוֹרfountain ofחַיִּיםlifeפִּיthe mouth ofצַדִּיקrighteousוּפִיand the mouth ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menיְכַסֶּהcoversחָמָס׃violence

    The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

12. 12

    שִׂנְאָהmaliceתְּעֹרֵרstirs upמְדָנִיםcontentionsוְעַלand uponכׇּל־פְּשָׁעִיםall transgressionsתְּכַסֶּהcoversאַהֲבָה׃love

    Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

13. 13

    בְּשִׂפְתֵיon the lips ofנָבוֹןdiscerningתִּמָּצֵאis foundחׇכְמָהwisdomוְשֵׁבֶטand a rodלְגֵוfor the back ofחֲסַר־לֵב׃lacking sense

    In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

14. 14

    חֲכָמִיםwiseיִצְפְּנוּ־דָעַתlay up knowledgeוּפִי־אֱוִילand the mouth of a foolמְחִתָּהa ruinקְרֹבָה׃is near

    Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

15. 15

    הוֹןwealthעָשִׁירrichקִרְיַתa city ofעֻזּוֹhis strengthמְחִתַּתthe ruin ofדַּלִּיםthe poorרֵישָׁם׃their poverty

    The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

16. 16

    פְּעֻלַּתthe wages ofצַדִּיקrighteousלְחַיִּיםto lifeתְּבוּאַתthe produce ofרָשָׁעwickedלְחַטָּאת׃to a sin offering

    The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

17. 17

    אֹרַחthe way ofלְחַיִּיםto lifeשׁוֹמֵרthe keeper ofמוּסָרdisciplineוְעֹזֵבand he who refusesתּוֹכַחַתrebukeמַתְעֶה׃goes astray

    He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.

18. 18

    מְכַסֶּהone who concealsשִׂנְאָהmaliceשִׂפְתֵי־שָׁקֶרthe lips of falseוּמוֹצִאand one who spreadsדִבָּהa bad reportהוּאheכְסִיל׃is a fool

    He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

19. 19

    בְּרֹבmuchדְּבָרִיםwordsלֹאnotיֶחְדַּל־פָּשַׁעthere wants not transgressionוְחוֹשֵׂךְand one who withholdsשְׂפָתָיוhis lipsמַשְׂכִּיל׃is wise

    In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

20. 20

    כֶּסֶףmoneyנִבְחָרchoiceלְשׁוֹןthe language ofצַדִּיקrighteousלֵבheartרְשָׁעִיםwicked menכִּמְעָט׃is worth little

    The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.

21. 21

    שִׂפְתֵיthe lips ofצַדִּיקrighteousיִרְעוּthey feedרַבִּיםmanyוֶאֱוִילִיםand foolsבַּחֲסַר־לֵבfor lack of senseיָמוּתוּ׃shall die

    The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

22. 22

    בִּרְכַּתblessing ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDהִיאit isתַעֲשִׁירit makes richוְלֹא־יוֹסִףand not may he addעֶצֶבgriefעִמָּהּ׃with her

    The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

23. 23

    כִּשְׂחוֹקis like sportלִכְסִילfor a foolעֲשׂוֹתto doזִמָּהmischiefוְחׇכְמָהand wisdomלְאִישׁfor a manתְּבוּנָה׃understanding

    It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

24. 24

    מְגוֹרַתthe fear ofרָשָׁעwickedהִיאit isתְבוֹאֶנּוּit will come to himוְתַאֲוַתand the desires ofצַדִּיקִיםthe righteousיִתֵּן׃shall be granted

    The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

25. 25

    כַּעֲבוֹרwhen passes byסוּפָהa storm windוְאֵיןand there is noרָשָׁעwickedוְצַדִּיקand righteousיְסוֹדis a foundationעוֹלָם׃eternal

    As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

26. 26

    כַּחֹמֶץlike vinegarלַשִּׁנַּיִםto the teethוְכֶעָשָׁןand like smokeלָעֵינָיִםto the eyesכֵּןthusהֶעָצֵלthe sluggardלְשֹׁלְחָיו׃to those who send him

    As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

27. 27

    יִרְאַתthe fear ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDתּוֹסִיףprolongsיָמִיםdaysוּשְׁנוֹתand years ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menתִּקְצֹרְנָה׃they will be short

    The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

28. 28

    תּוֹחֶלֶתthe hope ofצַדִּיקִיםthe righteousשִׂמְחָהjoyוְתִקְוַתand hope ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menתֹּאבֵד׃shall perish

    The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

29. 29

    מָעוֹזstrongholdלַתֹּםfor the integrityדֶּרֶךְthe way ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוּמְחִתָּהand destructionלְפֹעֲלֵיto the workers ofאָוֶן׃iniquity

    The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

30. 30

    צַדִּיקrighteousלְעוֹלָםforeverבַּל־יִמּוֹטshall not be removedוּרְשָׁעִיםand wicked menלֹאnotיִשְׁכְּנוּ־אָרֶץ׃shall dwell the land

    The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.

31. 31

    פִּי־צַדִּיקmouth of righteousיָנוּבit will bear fruitחׇכְמָהwisdomוּלְשׁוֹןand the tongue ofתַּהְפֻּכוֹתperverse thingsתִּכָּרֵת׃shall be cut off

    The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

32. 32

    שִׂפְתֵיthe lips ofצַדִּיקrighteousיֵדְעוּןknowרָצוֹןfavorוּפִיand the mouth ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menתַּהְפֻּכוֹת׃perverse things

    The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.
