Obadiah 1 עוֹבַדְיָה פרק א׳

   The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

2. 2

   הִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdקָטֹןka/TONsmallנְתַתִּיךָne/tat/TI/khaI have made youבַּגּוֹיִםbag/go/YIMamong the nationsבָּזוּיba/ZUYdespisedאַתָּהat/TAyouמְאֹד׃me/ODexceedingly

   Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly despised.

3. 3

   זְדוֹןze/DONthe pride ofלִבְּךָlib/be/KHAyour heartהִשִּׁיאֶךָhish/shi/E/khahas deceived youשֹׁכְנִיshokh/NIyou that dwellבְחַגְוֵי־סֶלַעve/chag/VE-SE/lain the clefts of the rockמְרוֹםme/ROMthe height ofשִׁבְתּוֹshiv/TOhis habitationאֹמֵרo/MERwho saysבְּלִבּוֹbe/lib/BOin his heartמִיmiwhoיוֹרִדֵנִיyo/ri/DE/niwill bring me downאָרֶץ׃A/retsto the ground

   The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

   אִם־תַּגְבִּיהַּim-tag/BI/ahif you exaltכַּנֶּשֶׁרkan/NE/sherlike the eagleוְאִם־בֵּיןve/IM-benand if amongכּוֹכָבִיםko/kha/VIMthe starsשִׂיםsimis setקִנֶּךָkin/NE/khayour nestמִשָּׁםmish/SHAMfrom thereאוֹרִידְךָo/ri/de/KHAI will bring you downנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃ne/UM-Adonaisays the LORD

   Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.

   אִם־גַּנָּבִיםim-gan/na/VIMif thievesבָּאוּ־לְךָBA/u-le/KHAcame to youאִם־שׁוֹדְדֵיim-SHOD/deif robbers ofלַיְלָהLAY/lanightאֵיךְekhhowנִדְמֵיתָהnid/ME/taare you cut offהֲלוֹאha/LOwould notיִגְנְבוּyig/ne/VUthey stealדַּיָּםday/YAMtheir fillאִם־בֹּצְרִיםim-bots/RIMif grape gatherersבָּאוּBA/ucameלָךְlakhto youהֲלוֹאha/LOwould notיַשְׁאִירוּyash/I/ruthey leaveעֹלֵלוֹת׃o/le/LOTgleanings

   If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?

   אֵיךְekhhowנֶחְפְּשׂוּnech/pe/SUare searched outעֵשָׂוE/SAVEsauנִבְעוּniv/Uare sought upמַצְפֻּנָיו׃mats/pu/NAYVhis hidden things

   How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!

   עַד־הַגְּבוּלad-hag/ge/VULto the borderשִׁלְּחוּךָshil/le/CHU/khahave sent youכֹּלkolallאַנְשֵׁיan/SHEthe men ofבְרִיתֶךָve/ri/TE/khayour covenantהִשִּׁיאוּךָhish/shi/U/khahave deceived youיָכְלוּya/khe/LUprevailedלְךָle/KHAagainst youאַנְשֵׁיan/SHEthe men ofשְׁלֹמֶךָshe/lo/ME/khayour peaceלַחְמְךָlach/me/KHAyour breadיָשִׂימוּya/SI/mulayמָזוֹרma/ZORa woundתַּחְתֶּיךָtach/TE/khabeneath youאֵיןenthere is noתְּבוּנָהte/vu/NAunderstandingבּוֹ׃boin him

   All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.

   הֲלוֹאha/LOshall notבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMin the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהne/UM-Adonaisays the LORDוְהַאֲבַדְתִּיve/ha/a/vad/TIand I will destroyחֲכָמִיםcha/kha/MIMthe wise menמֵאֱדוֹםme/E/DOMfrom Edomוּתְבוּנָהu/te/vu/NAand understandingמֵהַרme/HARfrom the mount ofעֵשָׂו׃E/SAVEsau

   Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

9. 9

   וְחַתּוּve/chat/TUand shall be dismayedגִבּוֹרֶיךָgib/bo/RE/khayour mighty menתֵּימָןTe/MANO Temanלְמַעַןle/MA/anso thatיִכָּרֶת־אִישׁyik/KA/ret-ishevery man may be cut offמֵהַרme/HARfrom the mount ofעֵשָׂוE/SAVEsauמִקָּטֶל׃mik/KA/telby slaughter

   And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

10. 10

    מֵחֲמַסme/cha/MASfor the violence ofאָחִיךָa/CHI/khayour brotherיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobתְּכַסְּךָte/khas/se/KHAshall cover youבוּשָׁהvu/SHAshameוְנִכְרַתָּve/nikh/RAT/taand you shall be cut offלְעוֹלָם׃le/o/LAMforever

    For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

11. 11

    בְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofעֲמׇדְךָa/mod/KHAyour standingמִנֶּגֶדmin/NE/gedaloofבְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofשְׁבוֹתshe/VOTcarrying captiveזָרִיםza/RIMstrangersחֵילוֹche/LOhis wealthוְנׇכְרִיםve/nokh/RIMand foreignersבָּאוּBA/ucameשְׁעָרָוshe/a/RAVhis gatesוְעַל־יְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםve/AL-ye/ru/sha/LA/yimand on Jerusalemיַדּוּyad/DUcastגוֹרָלgo/RALlotsגַּם־אַתָּהgam-at/TAyou alsoכְּאַחַדke/a/CHADas oneמֵהֶם׃me/HEMof them

    In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

12. 12

    וְאַל־תֵּרֶאve/AL-TE/reand do not lookבְיוֹם־אָחִיךָve/YOM-a/CHI/khaon the day of your brotherבְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofנׇכְרוֹnokh/ROhis estrangementוְאַל־תִּשְׂמַחve/AL-tis/MACHand do not rejoiceלִבְנֵי־יְהוּדָהliv/NE-Ye/hu/DAover the sons of Judahבְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofאׇבְדָםov/DAMtheir destructionוְאַל־תַּגְדֵּלve/AL-tag/DELand do not enlargeפִּיךָPI/khayour mouthבְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofצָרָה׃tsa/RAdistress

    But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

13. 13

    אַל־תָּבוֹאal-ta/VOdo not enterבְשַׁעַר־עַמִּיve/SHA/ar-am/MIin the gate of my peopleבְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofאֵידָםe/DAMtheir calamityאַל־תֵּרֶאal-TE/redo not lookגַם־אַתָּהgam-at/TAalso youבְּרָעָתוֹbe/ra/a/TOon his evilבְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofאֵידוֹe/DOhis calamityוְאַל־תִּשְׁלַחְנָהve/AL-tish/LACH/naand do not lay handsבְחֵילוֹve/che/LOon his wealthבְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofאֵידוֹ׃e/DOhis calamity

    Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;

14. 14

    וְאַל־תַּעֲמֹדve/AL-ta/a/MODand do not standעַל־הַפֶּרֶקal-hap/PE/rekat the crosswayלְהַכְרִיתle/hakh/RITto cut offאֶת־פְּלִיטָיוet-pe/li/TAYVhis fugitivesוְאַל־תַּסְגֵּרve/AL-tas/GERand do not deliver upשְׂרִידָיוse/ri/DAYVhis survivorsבְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofצָרָה׃tsa/RAdistress

    Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.

15. 15

    כִּי־קָרוֹבki-ka/ROVfor near isיוֹם־יְהֹוָהyom-Adonaithe day of the LORDעַל־כׇּל־הַגּוֹיִםal-kol-hag/go/YIMupon all the nationsכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasעָשִׂיתָa/SI/tayou have doneיֵעָשֶׂהye/a/SEshall be doneלָּךְlakhto youגְּמֻלְךָge/mul/KHAyour recompenseיָשׁוּבya/SHUVshall returnבְּרֹאשֶׁךָ׃be/ro/SHE/khaon your head

    For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

16. 16

    כִּיkiforכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasשְׁתִיתֶםshe/ti/TEMyou drankעַל־הַרal-harupon the mount ofקׇדְשִׁיkod/SHImy holinessיִשְׁתּוּyish/TUshall drinkכׇל־הַגּוֹיִםkhol-hag/go/YIMall the nationsתָּמִידta/MIDcontinuallyוְשָׁתוּve/sha/TUand they shall drinkוְלָעוּve/la/Uand swallow downוְהָיוּve/ha/YUand they shall beכְּלוֹאke/LOas thoughהָיוּ׃ha/YUthey had been

    For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.

17. 17

    וּבְהַרu/ve/HARand upon mountצִיּוֹןTsiy/YONZionתִּהְיֶהtih/YEshall beפְלֵיטָהfe/le/TAdeliveranceוְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it shall beקֹדֶשׁKO/deshholinessוְיָרְשׁוּve/ya/re/SHUand shall possessבֵּיתbetthe house ofיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobאֵת־מוֹרָשֵׁיהֶם׃et-mo/RA/she/hemtheir possessions

    But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

18. 18

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAand shall beבֵית־יַעֲקֹבvet-Ya/a/KOVthe house of Jacobאֵשׁesha fireוּבֵיתu/VETand the house ofיוֹסֵףYo/SEFJosephלֶהָבָהle/ha/VAa flameוּבֵיתu/VETand the house ofעֵשָׂוE/SAVEsauלְקַשׁle/KASHfor stubbleוְדָלְקוּve/da/le/KUand they shall kindleבָהֶםva/HEMin themוַאֲכָלוּםva/a/kha/LUMand devour themוְלֹא־יִהְיֶהve/LO-yih/YEand there shall not beשָׂרִידsa/RIDa survivorלְבֵיתle/VETof the house ofעֵשָׂוE/SAVEsauכִּיkiforיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDדִּבֵּר׃dib/BERhas spoken

    And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.

19. 19

    וְיָרְשׁוּve/ya/re/SHUand shall possessהַנֶּגֶבhan/NE/gevthe southאֶת־הַרet-harthe mount ofעֵשָׂוE/SAVEsauוְהַשְּׁפֵלָהve/hash/she/fe/LAand the plainאֶת־פְּלִשְׁתִּיםet-Pe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוְיָרְשׁוּve/ya/re/SHUand shall possessאֶת־שְׂדֵהet-se/DEthe field ofאֶפְרַיִםEf/RA/yimEphraimוְאֵתve/ETandשְׂדֵהse/DEthe field ofשֹׁמְרוֹןShom/RONSamariaוּבִנְיָמִןu/Vin/ya/MINand Benjaminאֶת־הַגִּלְעָד׃et-Hag/gil/ADGilead

    And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

20. 20

    וְגָלֻתve/ga/LUTand the exiles ofהַחֵל־הַזֶּהha/CHEL-haz/ZEthis hostלִבְנֵיliv/NEof the sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelאֲשֶׁר־כְּנַעֲנִיםa/SHER-Ke/na/a/NIMwhich are among the Canaanitesעַד־צָרְפַתad-Tsa/re/FATas far as Zarephathוְגָלֻתve/ga/LUTand the exiles ofיְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםYe/ru/sha/LA/yimJerusalemאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichבִּסְפָרַדBis/fa/RADin Sepharadיִרְשׁוּyir/SHUshall possessאֵת־עָרֵיet-a/REthe cities ofהַנֶּגֶב׃han/NE/gevthe south

    And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

21. 21

    וְעָלוּve/a/LUand shall come upמוֹשִׁעִיםmo/shi/IMsaviorsבְּהַרbe/HARon the mount ofצִיּוֹןTsiy/YONZionלִשְׁפֹּטlish/POTto judgeאֶת־הַרet-harthe mount ofעֵשָׂוE/SAVEsauוְהָיְתָהve/ha/ye/TAand shall beלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaithe LORD'sהַמְּלוּכָה׃ham/me/lu/KHAthe kingdom

    And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD's.
