   וַיְהִיvay/HIand cameדְּבַר־יְהֹוָהde/VAR-Adonaithe word of the LORDאֶל־יוֹנָהel-Yo/NAto Jonahבֶן־אֲמִתַּיven-A/mit/TAYson of Amittaiלֵאמֹר׃le/MORsaying

   Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

   קוּםkumariseלֵךְlekhgoאֶל־נִינְוֵהel-Ni/ne/VEto Ninevehהָעִירha/IRthe cityהַגְּדוֹלָהhag/ge/do/LAthe greatוּקְרָאu/ke/RAand cryעָלֶיהָa/LE/haagainst itכִּי־עָלְתָהki-a/le/TAfor has come upרָעָתָםra/a/TAMtheir wickednessלְפָנָי׃le/fa/NAYbefore me

   Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

   וַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand rose upיוֹנָהYo/NAJonahלִבְרֹחַliv/RO/achto fleeתַּרְשִׁישָׁהTar/SHI/shato Tarshishמִלִּפְנֵיmil/lif/NEfrom the presence ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוַיֵּרֶדvay/YE/redand went downיָפוֹYa/FOto Joppaוַיִּמְצָאvay/yim/TSAand foundאֳנִיָּהo/niy/YAa shipבָּאָהba/AgoingתַרְשִׁישׁTar/SHISHTarshishוַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENand he paidשְׂכָרָהּse/kha/RAits fareוַיֵּרֶדvay/YE/redand went downבָּהּbainto itלָבוֹאla/VOto goעִמָּהֶםim/ma/HEMwith themתַּרְשִׁישָׁהTar/SHI/shato Tarshishמִלִּפְנֵיmil/lif/NEfrom the presence ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

   But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

   וַיהֹוָהve-Adonaiand the LORDהֵטִילhe/TILhurledרוּחַ־גְּדוֹלָהRU/ach-ge/do/LAa great windאֶל־הַיָּםel-hay/YAMinto the seaוַיְהִיvay/HIand there wasסַעַר־גָּדוֹלSA/ar-ga/DOLa great stormבַּיָּםbay/YAMin the seaוְהׇאֳנִיָּהve/ho/o/niy/YAand the shipחִשְּׁבָהchish/she/VAwas aboutלְהִשָּׁבֵר׃le/hish/sha/VERto be broken

   But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

   וַיִּירְאוּvay/yi/re/Uand were afraidהַמַּלָּחִיםham/mal/la/CHIMthe marinersוַיִּזְעֲקוּvay/yiz/a/KUand criedאִישׁisheach manאֶל־אֱלֹהָיוel-e/lo/HAYVunto his godוַיָּטִלוּvay/ya/TI/luand castאֶת־הַכֵּלִיםet-hak/ke/LIMthe waresאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wereבׇּאֳנִיָּהbo/o/niy/YAin the shipאֶל־הַיָּםel-hay/YAMinto the seaלְהָקֵלle/ha/KELto lightenמֵעֲלֵיהֶםme/a/le/HEMfrom themוְיוֹנָהve/Yo/NAand Jonahיָרַדya/RADhad gone downאֶל־יַרְכְּתֵיel-yar/ke/TEinto the sides ofהַסְּפִינָהhas/se/fi/NAthe shipוַיִּשְׁכַּבvay/yish/KAVand lay downוַיֵּרָדַם׃vay/ye/ra/DAMand was fast asleep

   Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

   וַיִּקְרַבvay/yik/RAVand came nearאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himרַבravthe master ofהַחֹבֵלha/cho/VELthe crewוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹloto himמַה־לְּךָma-le/KHAwhat is with youנִרְדָּםnir/DAMO sleeperקוּםkumariseקְרָאke/RAcallאֶל־אֱלֹהֶיךָel-e/lo/HE/khato your Godאוּלַיu/LAYperhapsיִתְעַשֵּׁתyit/ash/SHETwill thinkהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodלָנוּLA/nuupon usוְלֹאve/LOand notנֹאבֵד׃no/VEDwe perish

   So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאִישׁisheach manאֶל־רֵעֵהוּel-re/E/huto his neighborלְכוּle/KHUcomeוְנַפִּילָהve/nap/PI/laand let us castגוֹרָלוֹתgo/ra/LOTlotsוְנֵדְעָהve/ned/Athat we may knowבְּשֶׁלְּמִיbe/shel/le/MIfor whose causeהָרָעָהha/ra/Athe evilהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisלָנוּLA/nuupon usוַיַּפִּלוּvay/yap/PI/luand they castגּוֹרָלוֹתgo/ra/LOTlotsוַיִּפֹּלvay/yip/POLand fellהַגּוֹרָלhag/go/RALthe lotעַל־יוֹנָה׃al-Yo/NAupon Jonah

   And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

8. 8

   וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himהַגִּידָה־נָּאhag/GI/da-natell I prayלָנוּLA/nuusבַּאֲשֶׁרba/a/SHERfor what causeלְמִי־הָרָעָהle/MI-ha/ra/Afor whom is the evilהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisלָנוּLA/nuupon usמַה־מְּלַאכְתְּךָma-me/lakh/te/KHAwhat is your occupationוּמֵאַיִןu/me/A/yinand whenceתָּבוֹאta/VOdo you comeמָהmawhat isאַרְצֶךָar/TSE/khayour countryוְאֵי־מִזֶּהve/E-miz/ZEand of whatעַםampeopleאָתָּה׃AT/taare you

   Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themעִבְרִיIv/RIa Hebrewאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIam Iוְאֶת־יְהֹוָהve/ET-Adonaiand the LORDאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofהַשָּׁמַיִםhash/sha/MA/yimheavenאֲנִיa/NIIיָרֵאya/REfearאֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂהa/SHER-a/SAwho madeאֶת־הַיָּםet-hay/YAMthe seaוְאֶת־הַיַּבָּשָׁה׃ve/ET-hay/yab/ba/SHAand the dry land

   And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.

    וַיִּירְאוּvay/yi/re/Uand fearedהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menיִרְאָהyir/Aa fearגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himמַה־זֹּאתma-zotwhat is thisעָשִׂיתָa/SI/tayou have doneכִּי־יָדְעוּki-ya/de/Ufor knewהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menכִּי־מִלִּפְנֵיki-mil/lif/NEthat from the presence ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDהוּאhuheבֹרֵחַvo/RE/achfledכִּיkiforהִגִּידhig/GIDhe had toldלָהֶם׃la/HEMto them

    Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

11. 11

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himמַה־נַּעֲשֶׂהma-na/a/SEwhat shall we doלָּךְlakhto youוְיִשְׁתֹּקve/yish/TOKthat may be calmהַיָּםhay/YAMthe seaמֵעָלֵינוּme/a/LE/nufrom usכִּיkiforהַיָּםhay/YAMthe seaהוֹלֵךְho/LEKHgrewוְסֹעֵר׃ve/so/ERand stormy

    Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

12. 12

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themשָׂאוּנִיsa/U/nitake me upוַהֲטִילֻנִיva/ha/ti/LU/niand cast meאֶל־הַיָּםel-hay/YAMinto the seaוְיִשְׁתֹּקve/yish/TOKso shall be calmהַיָּםhay/YAMthe seaמֵעֲלֵיכֶםme/a/le/KHEMfrom youכִּיkiforיוֹדֵעַyo/DE/aknowאָנִיA/niIכִּיkithatבְשֶׁלִּיve/shel/LIon my accountהַסַּעַרhas/SA/arthe stormהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe greatהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisעֲלֵיכֶם׃a/le/KHEMupon you

    And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

13. 13

    וַיַּחְתְּרוּvay/yach/te/RUand rowed hardהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menלְהָשִׁיבle/ha/SHIVto bring backאֶל־הַיַּבָּשָׁהel-hay/yab/ba/SHAto the dry landוְלֹאve/LOand notיָכֹלוּya/KHO/luthey were ableכִּיkiforהַיָּםhay/YAMthe seaהוֹלֵךְho/LEKHgrewוְסֹעֵרve/so/ERand stormyעֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMagainst them

    Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

14. 14

    וַיִּקְרְאוּvay/yik/re/Uand they criedאֶל־יְהֹוָהel-Adonaito the LORDוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאָנָּהan/NAwe beseechיְהֹוָהAdonaiO LORDאַל־נָאal-nanot I prayנֹאבְדָהno/ve/DAlet us perishבְּנֶפֶשׁbe/NE/feshfor the life ofהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְאַל־תִּתֵּןve/AL-tit/TENand lay notעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuupon usדָּםdambloodנָקִיאna/KIinnocentכִּי־אַתָּהki-at/TAfor YouיְהֹוָהAdonaiO LORDכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasחָפַצְתָּcha/FATS/tait pleased Youעָשִׂיתָ׃a/SI/taYou have done

    Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

15. 15

    וַיִּשְׂאוּvay/yis/Uand they took upאֶת־יוֹנָהet-Yo/NAJonahוַיְטִלֻהוּvay/ti/LU/huand cast himאֶל־הַיָּםel-hay/YAMinto the seaוַיַּעֲמֹדvay/ya/a/MODand ceasedהַיָּםhay/YAMthe seaמִזַּעְפּוֹ׃miz/za/POfrom its raging

    So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

16. 16

    וַיִּירְאוּvay/yi/re/Uand fearedהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menיִרְאָהyir/Aa fearגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatאֶת־יְהֹוָהet-Adonaithe LORDוַיִּזְבְּחוּ־זֶבַחvay/yiz/be/CHU-ZE/vachand offered a sacrificeלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDוַיִּדְּרוּvay/yid/de/RUand they vowedנְדָרִים׃ne/da/RIMvows

    Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.
