    וַיְדַבֵּרand spokeיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־מֹשֶׁהto Mosesבְּעַרְבֹתin the plains ofמוֹאָבMoabעַל־יַרְדֵּןupon Jordanיְרֵחוֹof Jerichoלֵאמֹר׃saying

    And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,

    צַוcommandאֶת־בְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְנָתְנוּand they shall giveלַלְוִיִּםto the Levitesמִנַּחֲלַתsome of the inheritance ofאֲחֻזָּתָםtheir possessionעָרִיםcitiesלָשָׁבֶתto dwell inוּמִגְרָשׁand pasture landלֶעָרִיםto the citiesסְבִיבֹתֵיהֶםwere around themתִּתְּנוּyou shall giveלַלְוִיִּם׃to the Levites

    Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.

    וְהָיוּthen they shall beהֶעָרִיםthe citiesלָהֶםto themלָשָׁבֶתto dwell inוּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶםand their pasture landsיִהְיוּshall beלִבְהֶמְתָּםfor their cattleוְלִרְכֻשָׁםand for their propertyוּלְכֹלand to everyחַיָּתָם׃their animal

    And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.

    וּמִגְרְשֵׁיand the pasture lands ofהֶעָרִיםthe citiesאֲשֶׁרwhichתִּתְּנוּyou shall giveלַלְוִיִּםto the Levitesמִקִּירfrom the wall ofהָעִירthe cityוָחוּצָהto and the outsideאֶלֶףthousandאַמָּהcubitסָבִיב׃all around

    And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.

    וּמַדֹּתֶםand you will measureמִחוּץwithoutלָעִירto the city ofאֶת־פְּאַת־קֵדְמָהthe east sideאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandבָּאַמָּהby the cubitוְאֶת־פְּאַת־נֶגֶבand the side of southאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandבָּאַמָּהby the cubitוְאֶת־פְּאַת־יָםand the side of the seaאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandבָּאַמָּהby the cubitוְאֵתandפְּאַתthe corner ofצָפוֹןthe northאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandבָּאַמָּהby the cubitוְהָעִירand the cityבַּתָּוֶךְin the midstזֶהthisיִהְיֶהshall beלָהֶםto themמִגְרְשֵׁיthe pasture lands ofהֶעָרִים׃the cities

    And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and the city shall be in the midst: this shall be to them the suburbs of the cities.

    וְאֵתandהֶעָרִיםthe citiesאֲשֶׁרwhichתִּתְּנוּyou shall giveלַלְוִיִּםto the Levitesאֵת־שֵׁשׁ־עָרֵיsix cities ofהַמִּקְלָטthe refugeאֲשֶׁרwhichתִּתְּנוּyou shall giveלָנֻסto fleeשָׁמָּהthereהָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerוַעֲלֵיהֶםand upon themתִּתְּנוּyou shall giveאַרְבָּעִיםfortyוּשְׁתַּיִםand twoעִיר׃cities

    And among the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint for the manslayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities.

    כׇּל־הֶעָרִיםall the citiesאֲשֶׁרwhichתִּתְּנוּyou shall giveלַלְוִיִּםto the Levitesאַרְבָּעִיםfortyוּשְׁמֹנֶהand eightעִירcitiesאֶתְהֶןthemוְאֶת־מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶן׃and their pasture lands

    So all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with their suburbs.

    וְהֶעָרִיםand the citiesאֲשֶׁרwhichתִּתְּנוּyou shall giveמֵאֲחֻזַּתfrom the possession ofבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelמֵאֵתfromהָרַבthe manyתַּרְבּוּyou shall give moreוּמֵאֵתand from withהַמְעַטthe fewתַּמְעִיטוּyou will decreaseאִישׁeachכְּפִיaccording toנַחֲלָתוֹhis inheritanceאֲשֶׁרwhichיִנְחָלוּthey will inheritיִתֵּןshall giveמֵעָרָיוsome of its citiesלַלְוִיִּם׃to the Levites

    And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.

    וַיְדַבֵּרand spokeיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־מֹשֶׁהto Mosesלֵּאמֹר׃saying

    And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

  10. 10

    דַּבֵּרspeakאֶל־בְּנֵיunto the sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְאָמַרְתָּand sayאֲלֵהֶםunto themכִּיwhenאַתֶּםyou areעֹבְרִיםpassingאֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּןthe Jordanאַרְצָהto the earthכְּנָעַן׃Canaan

    Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come over Jordan into the land of Canaan;

    וְהִקְרִיתֶםand you shall appointלָכֶםto youעָרִיםcitiesעָרֵיcities ofמִקְלָטrefugeתִּהְיֶינָהthere shall beלָכֶםto youוְנָסand he will fleeשָׁמָּהthereרֹצֵחַa manslayerמַכֵּה־נֶפֶשׁone who will strike soulבִּשְׁגָגָה׃by inadvertence

    Then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.

    וְהָיוּthen they shall beלָכֶםto youהֶעָרִיםthe citiesלְמִקְלָטto refugeמִגֹּאֵלfrom an avengerוְלֹאand notיָמוּתshall dieהָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerעַד־עׇמְדוֹuntil he standsלִפְנֵיbeforeהָעֵדָהthe congregationלַמִּשְׁפָּט׃to the judgment

    And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.

    וְהֶעָרִיםand the citiesאֲשֶׁרwhichתִּתֵּנוּyou will giveשֵׁשׁ־עָרֵיsix cities ofמִקְלָטrefugeתִּהְיֶינָהthere shall beלָכֶם׃to you

    And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge.

  14. 14

    אֵת־שְׁלֹשׁthreeהֶעָרִיםthe citiesתִּתְּנוּyou shall giveמֵעֵבֶרacrossלַיַּרְדֵּןthe Jordanוְאֵתandשְׁלֹשׁthreeהֶעָרִיםthe citiesתִּתְּנוּyou shall giveבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofכְּנָעַןCanaanעָרֵיcities ofמִקְלָטrefugeתִּהְיֶינָה׃there shall be

    Ye shall give three cities on this side Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan, which shall be cities of refuge.

    לִבְנֵיunto the sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְלַגֵּרand to the sojournerוְלַתּוֹשָׁבand for the resident alienבְּתוֹכָםamong themתִּהְיֶינָהthere shall beשֵׁשׁ־הֶעָרִיםsix the citiesהָאֵלֶּהtheseלְמִקְלָטto refugeלָנוּסto fleeשָׁמָּהthereכׇּל־מַכֵּה־נֶפֶשׁall one who will strike soulבִּשְׁגָגָה׃by inadvertence

    These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither.

  16. 16

    וְאִם־בִּכְלִיand if in a vessel ofבַרְזֶלironהִכָּהוּdid smite himוַיָּמֹתand he diedרֹצֵחַa manslayerהוּאheמוֹתsurelyיוּמַתshall be put to deathהָרֹצֵחַ׃the manslayer

    And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

    וְאִםand ifבְּאֶבֶןagainst stoneיָדof the handאֲשֶׁר־יָמוּתwho diesבָּהּin itהִכָּהוּdid smite himוַיָּמֹתand he diedרֹצֵחַa manslayerהוּאheמוֹתsurelyיוּמַתshall be put to deathהָרֹצֵחַ׃the manslayer

    And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

    אוֹorבִּכְלִיin a vessel ofעֵץ־יָדwood of the handאֲשֶׁר־יָמוּתwho diesבּוֹin itהִכָּהוּdid smite himוַיָּמֹתand he diedרֹצֵחַa manslayerהוּאheמוֹתsurelyיוּמַתshall be put to deathהָרֹצֵחַ׃the manslayer

    Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

  19. 19

    גֹּאֵלthe avenger ofהַדָּםthe bloodהוּאheיָמִיתshall he-slayאֶת־הָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerבְּפִגְעוֹ־בוֹwhen he meets himהוּאheיְמִתֶנּוּ׃he shall slay him

    The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him.

  20. 20

    וְאִם־בְּשִׂנְאָהand if in hatredיֶהְדֳּפֶנּוּhe will push himאוֹ־הִשְׁלִיךְor castעָלָיוupon himבִּצְדִיָּהwith lying in waitוַיָּמֹת׃and he died

    But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;

    אוֹorבְאֵיבָהin enmityהִכָּהוּdid smite himבְיָדוֹin his handוַיָּמֹתand he diedמוֹת־יוּמַתsurely he shall be put to deathהַמַּכֶּהthe one strikingרֹצֵחַa manslayerהוּאheגֹּאֵלthe avenger ofהַדָּםthe bloodיָמִיתshall he-slayאֶת־הָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerבְּפִגְעוֹ־בוֹ׃when he meets him

    Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.

  22. 22

    וְאִם־בְּפֶתַעand if in an instantבְּלֹא־אֵיבָהwithout enmityהֲדָפוֹhe pushed himאוֹ־הִשְׁלִיךְor castעָלָיוupon himכׇּל־כְּלִיall the vesselבְּלֹאwithoutצְדִיָּה׃lying in wait

    But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait,

    אוֹorבְכׇל־אֶבֶןin all stoneאֲשֶׁר־יָמוּתwho diesבָּהּin itבְּלֹאwithoutרְאוֹתto seeוַיַּפֵּלand he felledעָלָיוupon himוַיָּמֹתand he diedוְהוּאand heלֹא־אוֹיֵבnot is an enemyלוֹto himוְלֹאand notמְבַקֵּשׁdesireרָעָתוֹ׃his evil

    Or with any stone, wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm:

  24. 24

    וְשָׁפְטוּand they will judgeהָעֵדָהthe congregationבֵּיןamongהַמַּכֶּהthe one strikingוּבֵיןand betweenגֹּאֵלthe avenger ofהַדָּםthe bloodעַלuponהַמִּשְׁפָּטִיםthe judgmentsהָאֵלֶּה׃these

    Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:

  25. 25

    וְהִצִּילוּand they will deliverהָעֵדָהthe congregationאֶת־הָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerמִיַּדfrom the hand ofגֹּאֵלthe avenger ofהַדָּםthe bloodוְהֵשִׁיבוּand they put backאֹתוֹhimהָעֵדָהthe congregationאֶל־עִירunto the city ofמִקְלָטוֹhis refugeאֲשֶׁר־נָסwhich fledשָׁמָּהthereוְיָשַׁבand dweltבָּהּin itעַד־מוֹתuntil death ofהַכֹּהֵןthe priestהַגָּדֹלthe greatאֲשֶׁר־מָשַׁחwhich he anointedאֹתוֹhimבְּשֶׁמֶןwith oilהַקֹּדֶשׁ׃the sanctuary

    And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil.

    וְאִם־יָצֹאand if at allיֵצֵאgo forthהָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerאֶת־גְּבוּלborder ofעִירthe city ofמִקְלָטוֹhis refugeאֲשֶׁרwhichיָנוּסfleeשָׁמָּה׃there

    But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;

  27. 27

    וּמָצָאand he will findאֹתוֹhimגֹּאֵלthe avenger ofהַדָּםthe bloodמִחוּץwithoutלִגְבוּלto the border ofעִירthe city ofמִקְלָטוֹhis refugeוְרָצַחand he will killגֹּאֵלthe avenger ofהַדָּםthe bloodאֶת־הָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerאֵיןthere is noלוֹto himדָּם׃blood

    And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:

  28. 28

    כִּיbecauseבְעִירin the city ofמִקְלָטוֹhis refugeיֵשֵׁבshall dwellעַד־מוֹתuntil death ofהַכֹּהֵןthe priestהַגָּדֹלthe greatוְאַחֲרֵיand afterמוֹתthe death ofהַכֹּהֵןthe priestהַגָּדֹלthe greatיָשׁוּבshall returnהָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerאֶל־אֶרֶץto the land ofאֲחֻזָּתוֹ׃his possession

    Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

  29. 29

    וְהָיוּthen they shall beאֵלֶּהtheseלָכֶםto youלְחֻקַּתto a statute ofמִשְׁפָּטjudgmentלְדֹרֹתֵיכֶםfor your generationsבְּכֹלin allמוֹשְׁבֹתֵיכֶם׃your dwelling places

    So these things shall be for a statute of judgment unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

    כׇּל־מַכֵּה־נֶפֶשׁall one who will strike soulלְפִיaccording toעֵדִיםwitnessesיִרְצַחshall be slainאֶת־הָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerוְעֵדand one witnessאֶחָדoneלֹא־יַעֲנֶהnot he will answerבְנֶפֶשׁagainst anyoneלָמוּת׃to die

    Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.

    וְלֹא־תִקְחוּand not you should takeכֹפֶרa ransomלְנֶפֶשׁfor the life ofרֹצֵחַa manslayerאֲשֶׁר־הוּאwho isרָשָׁעwickedלָמוּתto dieכִּי־מוֹתbecause death ofיוּמָת׃he shall be put to death

    Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.

  32. 32

    וְלֹא־תִקְחוּand not you should takeכֹפֶרa ransomלָנוּסto fleeאֶל־עִירunto the city ofמִקְלָטוֹhis refugeלָשׁוּבto returnלָשֶׁבֶתto dwellבָּאָרֶץin the landעַד־מוֹתuntil death ofהַכֹּהֵן׃the priest

    And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.

  33. 33

    וְלֹא־תַחֲנִיפוּand not you will polluteאֶת־הָאָרֶץthe landאֲשֶׁרwhichאַתֶּםyou areבָּהּin itכִּיforהַדָּםthe bloodהוּאheיַחֲנִיףit pollutesאֶת־הָאָרֶץthe landוְלָאָרֶץand for the landלֹא־יְכֻפַּרnot shall be atonedלַדָּםto the bloodאֲשֶׁרwhichשֻׁפַּךְ־בָּהּit was shed in itכִּי־אִםexceptבְּדַםin the blood ofשֹׁפְכוֹ׃the one who shed it

    So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.

    וְלֹאand notתְטַמֵּאyou will make uncleanאֶת־הָאָרֶץthe landאֲשֶׁרwhichאַתֶּםyou areיֹשְׁבִיםdwellingבָּהּin itאֲשֶׁרwhichאֲנִיIשֹׁכֵןdwellsבְּתוֹכָהּin its midstכִּיforאֲנִיIיְהֹוָהthe LORDשֹׁכֵןdwellsבְּתוֹךְamongבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel.
