Numbers 25 בְּמִדְבַּר פרק כ״ה

1. 1

   וַיֵּשֶׁבand dweltיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelבַּשִּׁטִּיםin the Shittimוַיָּחֶלand beganהָעָםthe peopleלִזְנוֹתto commit whoredomאֶל־בְּנוֹתto the daughters ofמוֹאָב׃Moab

   And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

2. 2

   וַתִּקְרֶאןָand they invitedלָעָםto the peopleלְזִבְחֵיto the sacrifices ofאֱלֹהֵיהֶןtheir godsוַיֹּאכַלand ateהָעָםthe peopleוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּand they worshipedלֵאלֹהֵיהֶן׃to their gods

   And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

   וַיִּצָּמֶדand joined itselfיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלְבַעַלto Baal-פְּעוֹרpeorוַיִּחַר־אַףand was kindled the anger ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

   And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

4. 4

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־מֹשֶׁהto Mosesקַחtakeאֶת־כׇּל־רָאשֵׁיall the heads ofהָעָםthe peopleוְהוֹקַעand impaleאוֹתָםthemלַיהֹוָהto the LORDנֶגֶדagainstהַשָּׁמֶשׁthe sunוְיָשֹׁבand may turn awayחֲרוֹןthe fierceness ofאַף־יְהֹוָהthe anger of the LORDמִיִּשְׂרָאֵל׃from Israel

   And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidמֹשֶׁהMosesאֶל־שֹׁפְטֵיto judges ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהִרְגוּkillאִישׁeachאֲנָשָׁיוhis menהַנִּצְמָדִיםthose who have joined themselvesלְבַעַלto Baal-פְּעוֹר׃peor

   And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.

   וְהִנֵּהand beholdאִישׁa manמִבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelבָּאcameוַיַּקְרֵבand he presentedאֶל־אֶחָיוto his brethrenאֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִיתthe Midianitish womanלְעֵינֵיin the eyes ofמֹשֶׁהMosesוּלְעֵינֵיand to the eyes ofכׇּל־עֲדַתall congregation ofבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelוְהֵמָּהand theyבֹכִיםwere weepingפֶּתַחthe door ofאֹהֶלthe tent ofמוֹעֵד׃the congregation

   And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

7. 7

   וַיַּרְאand sawפִּינְחָסPhinehasבֶּן־אֶלְעָזָרson of Eleazarבֶּן־אַהֲרֹןson of Aaronהַכֹּהֵןthe priestוַיָּקׇםand rose upמִתּוֹךְfrom the midst ofהָעֵדָהthe congregationוַיִּקַּחand tookרֹמַחa spearבְּיָדוֹ׃in his hand

   And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

   וַיָּבֹאand cameאַחַרafterאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלman of Israelאֶל־הַקֻּבָּהto the tentוַיִּדְקֹרand he pierced throughאֶת־שְׁנֵיהֶםthe twoאֵת־אִישׁman ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְאֶת־הָאִשָּׁהand the womanאֶל־קֳבָתָהּto her bellyוַתֵּעָצַרand it was restrainedהַמַּגֵּפָהthe plagueמֵעַלfrom uponבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

   And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

9. 9

   וַיִּהְיוּand they wereהַמֵּתִיםthe deadבַּמַּגֵּפָהby the plagueאַרְבָּעָהfourוְעֶשְׂרִיםand twentyאָלֶף׃thousand

   And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

10. 10

    וַיְדַבֵּרand spokeיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־מֹשֶׁהto Mosesלֵּאמֹר׃saying

    And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

    פִּינְחָסPhinehasבֶּן־אֶלְעָזָרson of Eleazarבֶּן־אַהֲרֹןson of Aaronהַכֹּהֵןthe priestהֵשִׁיבhe restoredאֶת־חֲמָתִיMy furyמֵעַלfrom uponבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelבְּקַנְאוֹwhen he was zealousאֶת־קִנְאָתִיmy zealבְּתוֹכָםamong themוְלֹא־כִלִּיתִיand not I had spentאֶת־בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelבְּקִנְאָתִי׃in my zeal

    Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

12. 12

    לָכֵןthereforeאֱמֹרsayהִנְנִיbehold Iנֹתֵןgivingלוֹto himאֶת־בְּרִיתִיmy covenantשָׁלוֹם׃peace

    Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

13. 13

    וְהָיְתָהand it beלּוֹto himוּלְזַרְעוֹand for his offspringאַחֲרָיוafter himבְּרִיתcovenant ofכְּהֻנַּתpriesthood ofעוֹלָםeternalתַּחַתunderאֲשֶׁרwhichקִנֵּאhe was zealousלֵאלֹהָיוto his Godוַיְכַפֵּרand he made atonementעַל־בְּנֵיupon the sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

14. 14

    וְשֵׁםand the name ofאִישׁthe man ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהַמֻּכֶּהthe one who was struck downאֲשֶׁרwhichהֻכָּהwas smittenאֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִיתthe Midianitish womanזִמְרִיZimriבֶּן־סָלוּאson of Saluנְשִׂיאa leader ofבֵית־אָבthe house of the fatherלַשִּׁמְעֹנִי׃of the Simeonites

    Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.

15. 15

    וְשֵׁםand the name ofהָאִשָּׁהthe womanהַמֻּכָּהthe one who was struck downהַמִּדְיָנִיתthe Midianitish womanכׇּזְבִּיCozbiבַת־צוּרdaughter of Zurרֹאשׁthe head ofאֻמּוֹתpeoplesבֵּית־אָבthe house of the fatherבְּמִדְיָןin Midianהוּא׃he

    And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

16. 16

    וַיְדַבֵּרand spokeיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־מֹשֶׁהto Mosesלֵּאמֹר׃saying

    And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

    צָרוֹרvexאֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִיםthe Midianitesוְהִכִּיתֶםand you will strike downאוֹתָם׃them

    Vex the Midianites, and smite them:

18. 18

    כִּיforצֹרְרִיםare opposersהֵםtheyלָכֶםto youבְּנִכְלֵיהֶםby their deceitfulnessאֲשֶׁר־נִכְּלוּwhich they have dealt deceptivelyלָכֶםto youעַל־דְּבַר־פְּעוֹרupon the word of Peorוְעַל־דְּבַרand upon the word ofכׇּזְבִּיCozbiבַת־נְשִׂיאthe daughter of a leader ofמִדְיָןMidianאֲחֹתָםtheir sisterהַמֻּכָּהthe one who was struck downבְיוֹם־הַמַּגֵּפָהon the day of the plagueעַל־דְּבַר־פְּעוֹר׃upon the word of Peor

    For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
