And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

וַתִּקְרֶאןָvat/tik/RE/naand they calledלָעָםla/AMthe peopleלְזִבְחֵיle/ziv/CHEto the sacrifices ofאֱלֹהֵיהֶןe/lo/he/HENtheir godsוַיֹּאכַלvay/YO/khaland ateהָעָםha/AMthe peopleוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּvay/yish/ta/cha/VUand bowed downלֵאלֹהֵיהֶן׃le/lo/he/HENto their gods
And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

וַיִּצָּמֶדvay/yits/TSA/medand joined himselfיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelלְבַעַלle/VA/alto Baal-פְּעוֹרpe/ORpeorוַיִּחַר־אַףvay/YI/char-afand was kindled the anger ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃be/Yis/ra/ELagainst Israel
And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶל־מֹשֶׁהel-Mo/SHEto Mosesקַחkachtakeאֶת־כׇּל־רָאשֵׁיet-kol-ra/SHEall the heads ofהָעָםha/AMthe peopleוְהוֹקַעve/ho/KAand hang upאוֹתָםo/TAMthemלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDנֶגֶדNE/gedbeforeהַשָּׁמֶשׁhash/SHA/meshthe sunוְיָשֹׁבve/ya/SHOVthat may turn awayחֲרוֹןcha/RONthe fierceאַף־יְהֹוָהaf-Adonaithe anger of the LORDמִיִּשְׂרָאֵל׃miy/Yis/ra/ELfrom Israel
And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidמֹשֶׁהMo/SHEMosesאֶל־שֹׁפְטֵיel-shof/TEto the judges ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelהִרְגוּhir/GUslayאִישׁishevery oneאֲנָשָׁיוa/na/SHAYVhis menהַנִּצְמָדִיםhan/nits/ma/DIMwho joined themselvesלְבַעַלle/VA/alto Baal-פְּעוֹר׃pe/ORpeor
And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.

וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdאִישׁisha manמִבְּנֵיmib/be/NEof the children ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelבָּאbacameוַיַּקְרֵבvay/yak/REVand broughtאֶל־אֶחָיוel-e/CHAYVto his brothersאֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִיתet-Ham/mid/ya/NITthe Midianite womanלְעֵינֵיle/e/NEin the sight ofמֹשֶׁהMo/SHEMosesוּלְעֵינֵיu/le/e/NEand in the sight ofכׇּל־עֲדַתkol-a/DATall the congregation ofבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלbe/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelוְהֵמָּהve/HEM/mawhile theyבֹכִיםvo/KHIMwere weepingפֶּתַחPE/tachat the door ofאֹהֶלO/helthe tent ofמוֹעֵד׃mo/EDmeeting
And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

וַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawפִּינְחָסPi/ne/CHASPhinehasבֶּן־אֶלְעָזָרben-El/a/ZARson of Eleazarבֶּן־אַהֲרֹןben-A/ha/RONson of Aaronהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestוַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand roseמִתּוֹךְmit/TOKHfrom the midst ofהָעֵדָהha/e/DAthe congregationוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookרֹמַחRO/macha spearבְּיָדוֹ׃be/ya/DOin his hand
And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand he wentאַחַרa/CHARafterאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלish-Yis/ra/ELthe man of Israelאֶל־הַקֻּבָּהel-hak/kub/BAinto the chamberוַיִּדְקֹרvay/yid/KORand thrust throughאֶת־שְׁנֵיהֶםet-she/ne/HEMboth of themאֵת־אִישׁet-ishthe man ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוְאֶת־הָאִשָּׁהve/ET-ha/ish/SHAand the womanאֶל־קֳבָתָהּel-ko/va/TAthrough her bellyוַתֵּעָצַרvat/te/a/TSARso was stayedהַמַּגֵּפָהham/mag/ge/FAthe plagueמֵעַלme/ALfromבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Yis/ra/ELIsrael
And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

וַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand wereהַמֵּתִיםham/me/TIMthe deadבַּמַּגֵּפָהbam/mag/ge/FAby the plagueאַרְבָּעָהar/ba/Afourוְעֶשְׂרִיםve/es/RIMand twentyאָלֶף׃A/lefthousand
And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

וַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶל־מֹשֶׁהel-Mo/SHEto Mosesלֵּאמֹר׃le/MORsaying
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

פִּינְחָסPi/ne/CHASPhinehasבֶּן־אֶלְעָזָרben-El/a/ZARson of Eleazarבֶּן־אַהֲרֹןben-A/ha/RONson of Aaronהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestהֵשִׁיבhe/SHIVhas turned awayאֶת־חֲמָתִיet-cha/ma/TImy wrathמֵעַלme/ALfromבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלbe/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelבְּקַנְאוֹbe/kan/Oin that he was zealous withאֶת־קִנְאָתִיet-kin/a/TImy zealבְּתוֹכָםbe/to/KHAMamong themוְלֹא־כִלִּיתִיve/LO-khil/LI/tiso that I did not consumeאֶת־בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Be/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelבְּקִנְאָתִי׃be/kin/a/TIin my zeal
Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeאֱמֹרe/MORsayהִנְנִיhin/NIbehold Iנֹתֵןno/TENgiveלוֹloto himאֶת־בְּרִיתִיet-be/ri/TImy covenant ofשָׁלוֹם׃sha/LOMpeace
Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

וְהָיְתָהve/ha/ye/TAand it shall beלּוֹlofor himוּלְזַרְעוֹu/le/zar/Oand for his seedאַחֲרָיוa/cha/RAYVafter himבְּרִיתbe/RITa covenant ofכְּהֻנַּתke/hun/NATa priesthoodעוֹלָםo/LAMeverlastingתַּחַתTA/chatbecauseאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatקִנֵּאkin/NEhe was zealousלֵאלֹהָיוle/lo/HAYVfor his Godוַיְכַפֵּרvay/khap/PERand he made atonementעַל־בְּנֵיal-be/NEfor the children ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Yis/ra/ELIsrael
And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

וְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the name ofאִישׁishthe man ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelהַמֻּכֶּהham/muk/KEwho was slainאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהֻכָּהhuk/KAwas slainאֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִיתet-Ham/mid/ya/NITwith the Midianite womanזִמְרִיZim/RIZimriבֶּן־סָלוּאben-Sa/LUson of Saluנְשִׂיאne/SIa leader ofבֵית־אָבvet-ava father's houseלַשִּׁמְעֹנִי׃lash/Shim/o/NIof the Simeonites
Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.

וְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the name ofהָאִשָּׁהha/ish/SHAthe womanהַמֻּכָּהham/muk/KAwho was slainהַמִּדְיָנִיתham/Mid/ya/NITthe MidianiteכׇּזְבִּיKoz/BICozbiבַת־צוּרvat-Tsurdaughter of Zurרֹאשׁroshhead ofאֻמּוֹתum/MOTthe peoples ofבֵּית־אָבbet-ava father's houseבְּמִדְיָןbe/Mid/YANin Midianהוּא׃huwas he
And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

וַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶל־מֹשֶׁהel-Mo/SHEto Mosesלֵּאמֹר׃le/MORsaying
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

צָרוֹרtsa/RORvexאֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִיםet-Ham/mid/ya/NIMthe Midianitesוְהִכִּיתֶםve/hik/ki/TEMand strikeאוֹתָם׃o/TAMthem
Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
18
כִּיkiforצֹרְרִיםtsor/RIMvexהֵםhemtheyלָכֶםla/KHEMyouבְּנִכְלֵיהֶםbe/nikh/le/HEMwith their wilesאֲשֶׁר־נִכְּלוּa/SHER-nik/ke/LUwith which they have beguiledלָכֶםla/KHEMyouעַל־דְּבַר־פְּעוֹרal-De/VAR-pe/ORin the matter of Peorוְעַל־דְּבַרve/AL-de/VARand in the matter ofכׇּזְבִּיKoz/BICozbiבַת־נְשִׂיאvat-ne/SIthe daughter of a leader ofמִדְיָןMid/YANMidianאֲחֹתָםa/cho/TAMtheir sisterהַמֻּכָּהham/muk/KAwho was slainבְיוֹם־הַמַּגֵּפָהve/YOM-ham/mag/ge/FAon the day of the plagueעַל־דְּבַר־פְּעוֹר׃al-De/VAR-pe/ORin the matter of Peor
For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
