1. 1

   וְאֵלֶּהand theseהַגּוֹיִםthe nationsאֲשֶׁרwhichהִנִּיחַsufferedיְהֹוָהthe LORDלְנַסּוֹתto proveבָּםin themאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֵת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרall thatלֹא־יָדְעוּknow notאֵת־כׇּל־מִלְחֲמוֹתall the wars ofכְּנָעַן׃Canaan

   Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

2. 2

   רַקonlyלְמַעַןin order thatדַּעַתmay knowדֹּרוֹתgenerationsבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelלְלַמְּדָםto teach themמִלְחָמָהwarרַקonlyאֲשֶׁר־לְפָנִיםwhich formerlyלֹאnotיְדָעוּם׃they had known them

   Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

3. 3

   חֲמֵשֶׁתfiveסַרְנֵיthe lords ofפְלִשְׁתִּיםthe Philistinesוְכׇל־הַכְּנַעֲנִיand all the Canaaniteוְהַצִּידֹנִיand the Zidoniansוְהַחִוִּיand the Hiviteיֹשֵׁבwho dwell inהַרmountהַלְּבָנוֹןLebanonמֵהַרfrom the mountain ofבַּעַלBaalחֶרְמוֹןHermonעַדuntoלְבוֹאthe entering intoחֲמָת׃Hamath

   Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

4. 4

   וַיִּהְיוּand they wereלְנַסּוֹתto proveבָּםin themאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלָדַעַתto knowהֲיִשְׁמְעוּwill they obeyאֶת־מִצְוֺתthe commandments ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֲשֶׁר־צִוָּהthat commandedאֶת־אֲבוֹתָםtheir fathersבְּיַד־מֹשֶׁה׃in the hand of Moses

   And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5. 5

   וּבְנֵיand sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelיָשְׁבוּdweltבְּקֶרֶבamongהַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteהַחִתִּיthe Hittitesוְהָאֱמֹרִיand the Amoriteוְהַפְּרִזִּיand the Perizziteוְהַחִוִּיand the Hiviteוְהַיְבוּסִי׃and the Jebusite

   And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

6. 6

   וַיִּקְחוּand they tookאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיהֶםtheir daughtersלָהֶםto themלְנָשִׁיםfor wivesוְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיהֶםand their daughtersנָתְנוּthey gaveלִבְנֵיהֶםto their sonsוַיַּעַבְדוּand they servedאֶת־אֱלֹהֵיהֶם׃their gods

   And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

7. 7

   וַיַּעֲשׂוּand they didבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאֶת־הָרַעevilבְּעֵינֵיin the eyes ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיִּשְׁכְּחוּand they forgotאֶת־יְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵיהֶםtheir Godוַיַּעַבְדוּand servedאֶת־הַבְּעָלִיםthe Baalimוְאֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרוֹת׃and the Asherah poles

   And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

8. 8

   וַיִּחַר־אַףand was kindled the anger ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיִּמְכְּרֵםand he sold themבְּיַדin the hand ofכּוּשַׁןCushan-רִשְׁעָתַיִםrishathaimמֶלֶךְthe king ofאֲרַםSyriaנַהֲרָיִםnaharaimוַיַּעַבְדוּand servedבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאֶת־כּוּשַׁןCushan-רִשְׁעָתַיִםrishathaimשְׁמֹנֶהeightשָׁנִים׃years

   Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.

9. 9

   וַיִּזְעֲקוּand they did cryבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאֶל־יְהֹוָהto the LORDוַיָּקֶםand set upיְהֹוָהthe LORDמוֹשִׁיעַa delivererלִבְנֵיunto the sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיֹּשִׁיעֵםand he saved themאֵת־עׇתְנִיאֵלOthnielבֶּן־קְנַזson of Kenazאֲחִיthe brother ofכָלֵבCalebהַקָּטֹןthe smallמִמֶּנּוּ׃from him

   And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

10. 10

    וַתְּהִיand wasעָלָיוupon himרוּחַ־יְהֹוָהspirit of the LORDוַיִּשְׁפֹּטand he did judgeאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיֵּצֵאand went outלַמִּלְחָמָהto the warוַיִּתֵּןand gaveיְהֹוָהthe LORDבְּיָדוֹin his handאֶת־כּוּשַׁןCushan-רִשְׁעָתַיִםrishathaimמֶלֶךְthe king ofאֲרָםSyriaוַתָּעׇזand it prevailedיָדוֹhis handעַלuponכּוּשַׁןCushan-רִשְׁעָתָיִם׃rishathaim

    And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.

11. 11

    וַתִּשְׁקֹטand had restהָאָרֶץthe landאַרְבָּעִיםfortyשָׁנָהyearsוַיָּמׇתand he diedעׇתְנִיאֵלOthnielבֶּן־קְנַז׃son of Kenaz

    And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

12. 12

    וַיֹּסִפוּand again didבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלַעֲשׂוֹתto doהָרַעevilבְּעֵינֵיin the eyes ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיְחַזֵּקand strengthenedיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־עֶגְלוֹןEglonמֶלֶךְ־מוֹאָבking of Moabעַל־יִשְׂרָאֵלupon Israelעַלbecauseכִּי־עָשׂוּbecause they didאֶת־הָרַעevilבְּעֵינֵיin the eyes ofיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

    And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

13. 13

    וַיֶּאֱסֹףand gatheredאֵלָיוto himאֶת־בְּנֵיthe sons ofעַמּוֹןAmmonוַעֲמָלֵקand Amalekוַיֵּלֶךְand wentוַיַּךְand he smoteאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיִּירְשׁוּand took possessionאֶת־עִירthe city ofהַתְּמָרִים׃the palm trees

    And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

14. 14

    וַיַּעַבְדוּand servedבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאֶת־עֶגְלוֹןEglonמֶלֶךְ־מוֹאָבking of Moabשְׁמוֹנֶה־עֶשְׂרֵהeighteenשָׁנָה׃years

    So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15. 15

    וַיִּזְעֲקוּand they did cryבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאֶל־יְהֹוָהto the LORDוַיָּקֶםand set upיְהֹוָהthe LORDלָהֶםto themמוֹשִׁיעַa delivererאֶת־אֵהוּדEhudבֶּן־גֵּרָאson of Geraבֶּן־הַיְמִינִיa Benjamiteאִישׁa manאִטֵּרshut ofיַד־יְמִינוֹhand of his right handוַיִּשְׁלְחוּand sentבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelבְּיָדוֹin his handמִנְחָהa presentלְעֶגְלוֹןto Eglonמֶלֶךְthe king ofמוֹאָב׃Moab

    But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

16. 16

    וַיַּעַשׂand he madeלוֹto himאֵהוּדEhudחֶרֶבthe sword ofוְלָהּand to herשְׁנֵיtwoפֵיוֹתedgesגֹּמֶדwas a cubitאׇרְכָּהּits lengthוַיַּחְגֹּרand he girdedאוֹתָהּitמִתַּחַתfrom beneathלְמַדָּיוunder his raimentעַלuponיֶרֶךְthe thigh ofיְמִינוֹ׃his right hand

    But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

17. 17

    וַיַּקְרֵבand he presentedאֶת־הַמִּנְחָהthe presentלְעֶגְלוֹןto Eglonמֶלֶךְthe king ofמוֹאָבMoabוְעֶגְלוֹןand Eglonאִישׁa manבָּרִיאfatמְאֹד׃exceedingly

    And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

18. 18

    וַיְהִיand it came to passכַּאֲשֶׁרasכִּלָּהhe had made an endלְהַקְרִיבto offerאֶת־הַמִּנְחָהthe presentוַיְשַׁלַּחand sentאֶת־הָעָםthe peopleנֹשְׂאֵיbearers ofהַמִּנְחָה׃the present

    And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

19. 19

    וְהוּאbut heשָׁבturned againמִן־הַפְּסִילִיםfrom the idolsאֲשֶׁרwhichאֶת־הַגִּלְגָּלGilgalוַיֹּאמֶרand saidדְּבַר־סֵתֶרa secret errandלִיto meאֵלֶיךָto youהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingוַיֹּאמֶרand saidהָסhush!וַיֵּצְאוּand they went outמֵעָלָיוfrom with himכׇּל־הָעֹמְדִיםall the ones standingעָלָיו׃upon him

    But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

20. 20

    וְאֵהוּדand Ehudבָּאcameאֵלָיוto himוְהוּא־יֹשֵׁבand he was sittingבַּעֲלִיַּתin the roof chamber ofהַמְּקֵרָהthe coolingאֲשֶׁר־לוֹwhich he hasלְבַדּוֹaloneוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵהוּדEhudדְּבַר־אֱלֹהִיםa message from Godלִיto meאֵלֶיךָto youוַיָּקׇםand aroseמֵעַלfrom uponהַכִּסֵּא׃the throne

    And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

21. 21

    וַיִּשְׁלַחand he put forthאֵהוּדEhudאֶת־יַדthe hand ofשְׂמֹאלוֹhis leftוַיִּקַּחand tookאֶת־הַחֶרֶבthe swordמֵעַלfrom uponיֶרֶךְthe thigh ofיְמִינוֹhis right handוַיִּתְקָעֶהָand he thrust itבְּבִטְנוֹ׃in his belly

    And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

22. 22

    וַיָּבֹאand cameגַם־הַנִּצָּבalso the hiltאַחַרafterהַלַּהַבthe bladeוַיִּסְגֹּרand he closed upהַחֵלֶבthe fatבְּעַדthroughהַלַּהַבthe bladeכִּיthatלֹאnotשָׁלַףhe drew outהַחֶרֶבthe swordמִבִּטְנוֹfrom his bellyוַיֵּצֵאand went outהַפַּרְשְׁדֹנָה׃to the hole

    And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

23. 23

    וַיֵּצֵאand went outאֵהוּדEhudהַמִּסְדְּרוֹנָהto the porchוַיִּסְגֹּרand he closed upדַּלְתוֹתthe doors ofהָעֲלִיָּהthe roof chamberבַּעֲדוֹfor himselfוְנָעָל׃and he locked them

    Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.

24. 24

    וְהוּאand whenיָצָאhe went forthוַעֲבָדָיוand his servantsבָּאוּcameוַיִּרְאוּand they sawוְהִנֵּהand beholdדַּלְתוֹתthe doors ofהָעֲלִיָּהthe roof chamberנְעֻלוֹתwere lockedוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidאַךְbutמֵסִיךְsurely coveringהוּאheאֶת־רַגְלָיוhis feetבַּחֲדַרin the chamber ofהַמְּקֵרָה׃the coolness

    When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

25. 25

    וַיָּחִילוּand they tarriedעַד־בּוֹשׁuntil were ashamedוְהִנֵּהand beholdאֵינֶנּוּhe notפֹתֵחַwas openingדַּלְתוֹתthe doors ofהָעֲלִיָּהthe roof chamberוַיִּקְחוּand they tookאֶת־הַמַּפְתֵּחַthe keyוַיִּפְתָּחוּand they opened themוְהִנֵּהand beholdאֲדֹנֵיהֶםtheir masterנֹפֵלfallingאַרְצָהto the earthמֵת׃dead

    And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

26. 26

    וְאֵהוּדand Ehudנִמְלַטescapedעַדuntilהִתְמַהְמְהָםdelayed theyוְהוּאand itעָבַרpassedאֶת־הַפְּסִילִיםthe idolsוַיִּמָּלֵטand he escapedהַשְּׂעִירָתָה׃to the Seirah

    And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

27. 27

    וַיְהִיand it came to passבְּבוֹאוֹwhen he goes inוַיִּתְקַעand he blewבַּשּׁוֹפָרwith the shofarבְּהַרon the mount ofאֶפְרָיִםEphraimוַיֵּרְדוּand came downעִמּוֹwith himבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelמִן־הָהָרfrom the mountainוְהוּאand heלִפְנֵיהֶם׃before them

    And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

28. 28

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵהֶםunto themרִדְפוּpursueאַחֲרַיafter meכִּי־נָתַןthat has givenיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־אֹיְבֵיכֶםyour enemiesאֶת־מוֹאָבMoabבְּיֶדְכֶםinto your handsוַיֵּרְדוּand came downאַחֲרָיוafter himוַיִּלְכְּדוּand they capturedאֶת־מַעְבְּרוֹתthe fords ofהַיַּרְדֵּןthe Jordanלְמוֹאָבof Moabוְלֹא־נָתְנוּand not they gaveאִישׁa manלַעֲבֹר׃to pass over

    And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

29. 29

    וַיַּכּוּand struckאֶת־מוֹאָבMoabבָּעֵתat the timeהַהִיאthatכַּעֲשֶׂרֶתabout tenאֲלָפִיםthousandאִישׁmenכׇּל־שָׁמֵןall stout personוְכׇל־אִישׁand all man ofחָיִלvalorוְלֹאand notנִמְלַטescapedאִישׁ׃a man

    And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.

30. 30

    וַתִּכָּנַעand it was subduedמוֹאָבMoabבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatתַּחַתunderיַדthe hand ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַתִּשְׁקֹטand had restהָאָרֶץthe landשְׁמוֹנִיםeightyשָׁנָה׃years

    So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

31. 31

    וְאַחֲרָיוand after itהָיָהwasשַׁמְגַּרShamgarבֶּן־עֲנָתson of Anathוַיַּךְand he smoteאֶת־פְּלִשְׁתִּיםPhilistinesשֵׁשׁ־מֵאוֹתsix hundredאִישׁmenבְּמַלְמַדwith an ox goad ofהַבָּקָרthe herdוַיּוֹשַׁעand he deliveredגַּם־הוּאalso heאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
