1. 1

   וַיַּעַלand went upמַלְאַךְ־יְהֹוָהangel of the LORDמִן־הַגִּלְגָּלfrom Gilgalאֶל־הַבֹּכִיםto Bochimוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאַעֲלֶהI made go upאֶתְכֶםyouמִמִּצְרַיִםout of Egyptוָאָבִיאand I broughtאֶתְכֶםyouאֶל־הָאָרֶץunto the landאֲשֶׁרwhichנִשְׁבַּעְתִּיI swareלַאֲבֹתֵיכֶםunto your fathersוָאֹמַרand I saidלֹא־אָפֵרnot I will breakבְּרִיתִיmy covenantאִתְּכֶםwith youלְעוֹלָם׃forever

   And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

   וְאַתֶּםand youלֹא־תִכְרְתוּnot you shall makeבְרִיתa covenantלְיוֹשְׁבֵיunto the inhabitants ofהָאָרֶץthe landהַזֹּאתthisמִזְבְּחוֹתֵיהֶםtheir altarsתִּתֹּצוּןyou will pull downוְלֹא־שְׁמַעְתֶּםand not you have heardבְּקוֹלִיto My voiceמַה־זֹּאתwhat thisעֲשִׂיתֶם׃you have done

   And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?

3. 3

   וְגַםand alsoאָמַרְתִּיI saidלֹא־אֲגָרֵשׁnot I will drive outאוֹתָםthemמִפְּנֵיכֶםbecause of youוְהָיוּthen they shall beלָכֶםto youלְצִדִּיםas thorns in your sidesוֵאלֹהֵיהֶםand their godsיִהְיוּshall beלָכֶםto youלְמוֹקֵשׁ׃for a snare

   Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

   וַיְהִיand it came to passכְּדַבֵּרas speaksמַלְאַךְangel ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהtheseאֶל־כׇּל־בְּנֵיto all sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיִּשְׂאוּand liftedהָעָםthe peopleאֶת־קוֹלָםtheir voicesוַיִּבְכּוּ׃and they wept

   And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

5. 5

   וַיִּקְרְאוּand they calledשֵׁם־הַמָּקוֹםname of the placeהַהוּאthatבֹּכִיםBochimוַיִּזְבְּחוּ־שָׁםand sacrificed thereלַיהֹוָה׃to the LORD

   And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.

6. 6

   וַיְשַׁלַּחand sentיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaאֶת־הָעָםthe peopleוַיֵּלְכוּand they wentבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאִישׁa manלְנַחֲלָתוֹto his own inheritanceלָרֶשֶׁתto possessאֶת־הָאָרֶץ׃the land

   And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

7. 7

   וַיַּעַבְדוּand they servedהָעָםthe peopleאֶת־יְהֹוָהthe LORDכֹּלallיְמֵיthe days ofיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaוְכֹלand allיְמֵיthe days ofהַזְּקֵנִיםthe eldersאֲשֶׁרwhichהֶאֱרִיכוּthey did prolongיָמִיםdaysאַחֲרֵיafterיְהוֹשׁוּעַJoshuaאֲשֶׁרwhichרָאוּsawאֵת־כׇּל־מַעֲשֵׂהall work ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDהַגָּדוֹלthe greatאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהhe didלְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃to Israel

   And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.

8. 8

   וַיָּמׇתand diedיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaבִּן־נוּןson of Nunעֶבֶדthe servant ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDבֶּן־מֵאָהa hundredוָעֶשֶׂרand tenשָׁנִים׃years

   And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

9. 9

   וַיִּקְבְּרוּand they buriedאוֹתוֹhimבִּגְבוּלin the borders ofנַחֲלָתוֹhis inheritanceבְּתִמְנַת־חֶרֶסat Timnath-Heresבְּהַרon the mount ofאֶפְרָיִםEphraimמִצְּפוֹןon the north ofלְהַר־גָּעַשׁ׃mount Gaash

   And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

10. 10

    וְגַםand alsoכׇּל־הַדּוֹרall the generationהַהוּאthatנֶאֶסְפוּgatheredאֶל־אֲבוֹתָיוunto their fathersוַיָּקׇםand aroseדּוֹרa generationאַחֵרanotherאַחֲרֵיהֶםafter themאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־יָדְעוּknew notאֶת־יְהֹוָהthe LORDוְגַםand alsoאֶת־הַמַּעֲשֶׂהthe workאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהhe didלְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃to Israel

    And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

11. 11

    וַיַּעֲשׂוּand they didבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאֶת־הָרַעevilבְּעֵינֵיin the eyes ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיַּעַבְדוּand they servedאֶת־הַבְּעָלִים׃the Baalim

    And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim:

12. 12

    וַיַּעַזְבוּand they forsookאֶת־יְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofאֲבוֹתָםtheir fathersהַמּוֹצִיאthe one bringing forthאוֹתָםthemמֵאֶרֶץfrom the land ofמִצְרַיִםEgyptוַיֵּלְכוּand they wentאַחֲרֵיafterאֱלֹהִים־אֲחֵרִיםother godsמֵאֱלֹהֵיof the gods ofהָעַמִּיםthe peoplesאֲשֶׁרwhichסְבִיבוֹתֵיהֶםwere around themוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּand they worshipedלָהֶםto themוַיַּכְעִסוּand they provoked to angerאֶת־יְהֹוָה׃the LORD

    And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.

13. 13

    וַיַּעַזְבוּand they forsookאֶת־יְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיַּעַבְדוּand they servedלַבַּעַלthe Baalוְלָעַשְׁתָּרוֹת׃and the Ashtaroth

    And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

14. 14

    וַיִּחַר־אַףand was kindled the anger ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיִּתְּנֵםand he made themבְּיַד־שֹׁסִיםin the hand of plunderersוַיָּשֹׁסּוּand they plunderedאוֹתָםthemוַיִּמְכְּרֵםand he sold themבְּיַדin the hand ofאוֹיְבֵיהֶםtheir enemiesמִסָּבִיבall aroundוְלֹא־יָכְלוּand not could theyעוֹדany moreלַעֲמֹדto standלִפְנֵיbeforeאוֹיְבֵיהֶם׃their enemies

    And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

15. 15

    בְּכֹלin allאֲשֶׁרwhichיָצְאוּwent forthיַד־יְהֹוָהhand of the LORDהָיְתָה־בָּםwas in themלְרָעָהfor evilכַּאֲשֶׁרasדִּבֶּרspokeיְהֹוָהthe LORDוְכַאֲשֶׁרand asנִשְׁבַּעsworeיְהֹוָהthe LORDלָהֶםto themוַיֵּצֶרand it was distressלָהֶםto themמְאֹד׃exceedingly

    Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.

16. 16

    וַיָּקֶםand set upיְהֹוָהthe LORDשֹׁפְטִיםjudgesוַיּוֹשִׁיעוּםand they delivered themמִיַּדfrom the hand ofשֹׁסֵיהֶם׃their plunderers

    Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

17. 17

    וְגַםand alsoאֶל־שֹׁפְטֵיהֶםto their judgesלֹאnotשָׁמֵעוּthey listenedכִּיbecauseזָנוּthey went a whoringאַחֲרֵיafterאֱלֹהִים־אֲחֵרִיםother godsוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּand they worshipedלָהֶםto themסָרוּthey turned asideמַהֵרquicklyמִן־הַדֶּרֶךְout of the wayאֲשֶׁרwhichהָלְכוּwentאֲבוֹתָםtheir fathersלִשְׁמֹעַto hearמִצְוֺת־יְהֹוָהthe commandments of the LORDלֹא־עָשׂוּnot they didכֵן׃thus

    And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.

18. 18

    וְכִי־הֵקִיםand that had establishedיְהֹוָהthe LORDלָהֶםto themשֹׁפְטִיםjudgesוְהָיָהand beיְהֹוָהthe LORDעִם־הַשֹּׁפֵטwith the judgeוְהוֹשִׁיעָםand he delivered themמִיַּדfrom the hand ofאֹיְבֵיהֶםtheir enemiesכֹּלallיְמֵיthe days ofהַשּׁוֹפֵטthe judgeכִּי־יִנָּחֵםfor it repentedיְהֹוָהthe LORDמִנַּאֲקָתָםfrom their groaningמִפְּנֵיbecause ofלֹחֲצֵיהֶםthose who oppressed themוְדֹחֲקֵיהֶם׃and vexed them

    And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

19. 19

    וְהָיָהand beבְּמוֹתin the death ofהַשּׁוֹפֵטthe judgeיָשֻׁבוּthey turned backוְהִשְׁחִיתוּand corrupted themselvesמֵאֲבוֹתָםmore than their fathersלָלֶכֶתto goאַחֲרֵיafterאֱלֹהִים־אֲחֵרִיםother godsלְעׇבְדָםto serve themוּלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺתand to bow downלָהֶםto themלֹאnotהִפִּילוּthey ceasedמִמַּעַלְלֵיהֶםof their evil doingsוּמִדַּרְכָּםnor from their wayהַקָּשָׁה׃the stubborn

    And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

20. 20

    וַיִּחַר־אַףand was kindled the anger ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיֹּאמֶרand saidיַעַןbecauseאֲשֶׁרwhichעָבְרוּhave transgressedהַגּוֹיthe nationהַזֶּהthisאֶת־בְּרִיתִיmy covenantאֲשֶׁרwhichצִוִּיתִיhave I commandedאֶת־אֲבוֹתָםtheir fathersוְלֹאand notשָׁמְעוּthey heardלְקוֹלִי׃to my voice

    And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

21. 21

    גַּם־אֲנִיalso IלֹאnotאוֹסִיףI will henceforthלְהוֹרִישׁto drive outאִישׁa manמִפְּנֵיהֶםfrom before themמִן־הַגּוֹיִםof the nationsאֲשֶׁר־עָזַבwhich leftיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaוַיָּמֹת׃and he died

    I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:

22. 22

    לְמַעַןin order thatנַסּוֹתto put to the testבָּםin themאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהֲשֹׁמְרִיםwhether keepingהֵםtheyאֶת־דֶּרֶךְthroughיְהֹוָהthe LORDלָלֶכֶתto goבָּםin themכַּאֲשֶׁרasשָׁמְרוּkeptאֲבוֹתָםtheir fathersאִם־לֹא׃if not

    That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

23. 23

    וַיַּנַּחand leftיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־הַגּוֹיִםthe nationsהָאֵלֶּהtheseלְבִלְתִּיto notהוֹרִישָׁםto dispossess themמַהֵרquicklyוְלֹאand notנְתָנָםhas given themבְּיַד־יְהוֹשֻׁעַ׃in the hand of Joshua

    Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
