1. 1

   וַיְהִיand it came to passאַחֲרֵיafterמוֹתthe death ofיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaוַיִּשְׁאֲלוּand they askedבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelבַּיהֹוָהof the LORDלֵאמֹרsayingמִיwhoיַעֲלֶה־לָּנוּshall go up for usאֶל־הַכְּנַעֲנִיto the Canaaniteבַּתְּחִלָּהfirstלְהִלָּחֶםto fightבּוֹ׃in it

   Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

2. 2

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהֹוָהthe LORDיְהוּדָהJudahיַעֲלֶהlet ascendהִנֵּהbeholdנָתַתִּיI have givenאֶת־הָאָרֶץthe landבְּיָדוֹ׃in his hand

   And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3. 3

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהוּדָהJudahלְשִׁמְעוֹןfor Simeonאָחִיוhis brotherעֲלֵהgo upאִתִּיwith meבְגֹרָלִיin my lotוְנִלָּחֲמָהand let us fightבַּכְּנַעֲנִיamong the Canaaniteוְהָלַכְתִּיand I will walkגַם־אֲנִיalso Iאִתְּךָwith youבְּגוֹרָלֶךָin your lotוַיֵּלֶךְand wentאִתּוֹwith himשִׁמְעוֹן׃Simeon

   And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

   וַיַּעַלand went upיְהוּדָהJudahוַיִּתֵּןand gaveיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteוְהַפְּרִזִּיand the Perizziteבְּיָדָםinto their handsוַיַּכּוּםand they smote themבְּבֶזֶקat Bezekעֲשֶׂרֶתtenאֲלָפִיםthousandאִישׁ׃men

   And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

   וַיִּמְצְאוּand they foundאֶת־אֲדֹנִיAdoniבֶזֶקBezekבְּבֶזֶקat Bezekוַיִּלָּחֲמוּand they foughtבּוֹin itוַיַּכּוּand struckאֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteוְאֶת־הַפְּרִזִּי׃and the Perizzite

   And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6. 6

   וַיָּנׇסand he fledאֲדֹנִיAdoniבֶזֶקBezekוַיִּרְדְּפוּand pursuedאַחֲרָיוafter himוַיֹּאחֲזוּand they seizedאוֹתוֹhimוַיְקַצְּצוּand they cut offאֶת־בְּהֹנוֹתthe thumbs ofיָדָיוhis handsוְרַגְלָיו׃and his feet

   But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7. 7

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲדֹנִי־בֶזֶקAdoni-Bezekשִׁבְעִיםseventyמְלָכִיםkingsבְּהֹנוֹתthe thumbs ofיְדֵיהֶםtheir handsוְרַגְלֵיהֶםand their feetמְקֻצָּצִיםcut offהָיוּwereמְלַקְּטִיםgathering upתַּחַתunderשֻׁלְחָנִיmy tableכַּאֲשֶׁרasעָשִׂיתִיI didכֵּןthusשִׁלַּם־לִיhas repaid meאֱלֹהִיםGodוַיְבִיאֻהוּand carried himיְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםJerusalemוַיָּמׇתand he diedשָׁם׃there

   And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

   וַיִּלָּחֲמוּand they foughtבְנֵי־יְהוּדָהsons of Judahבִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםin Jerusalemוַיִּלְכְּדוּand they capturedאוֹתָהּitוַיַּכּוּהָand they struck itלְפִי־חָרֶבby the edge of the swordוְאֶת־הָעִירand the cityשִׁלְּחוּthey setבָאֵשׁ׃in fire

   Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

9. 9

   וְאַחַרand thenיָרְדוּcame downבְּנֵיthe sons ofיְהוּדָהJudahלְהִלָּחֵםto fightבַּכְּנַעֲנִיamong the Canaaniteיוֹשֵׁבdwelling inהָהָרthe mountainוְהַנֶּגֶבand the Negevוְהַשְּׁפֵלָה׃and the Shephelah

   And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.

10. 10

    וַיֵּלֶךְand wentיְהוּדָהJudahאֶל־הַכְּנַעֲנִיto the Canaaniteהַיּוֹשֵׁבthe one dwellingבְּחֶבְרוֹןin Hebronוְשֵׁם־חֶבְרוֹןand the name of HebronלְפָנִיםformerlyקִרְיַתKiriath-אַרְבַּעarbaוַיַּכּוּand struckאֶת־שֵׁשַׁיSheshaiוְאֶת־אֲחִימַןand Ahimanוְאֶת־תַּלְמָי׃and Talmai

    And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

11. 11

    וַיֵּלֶךְand wentמִשָּׁםfrom thereאֶל־יוֹשְׁבֵיto the inhabitants ofדְּבִירDebirוְשֵׁם־דְּבִירand the name of Debirלְפָנִיםformerlyקִרְיַת־סֵפֶר׃Kiriath-sepher

    And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher:

12. 12

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidכָּלֵבCalebאֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּהwhich will smiteאֶת־קִרְיַת־סֵפֶרKiriath-sepherוּלְכָדָהּand he will capture itוְנָתַתִּיand I will giveלוֹto himאֶת־עַכְסָהAchsahבִתִּיmy daughterלְאִשָּׁה׃for wife

    And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

13. 13

    וַיִּלְכְּדָהּand he captured itעׇתְנִיאֵלOthnielבֶּן־קְנַזson of Kenazאֲחִיthe brother ofכָלֵבCalebהַקָּטֹןthe smallמִמֶּנּוּfrom himוַיִּתֶּן־לוֹand gave to himאֶת־עַכְסָהAchsahבִתּוֹhis daughterלְאִשָּׁה׃for wife

    And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

14. 14

    וַיְהִיand it came to passבְּבוֹאָהּwhen she cameוַתְּסִיתֵהוּand she incited himלִשְׁאֹלto askמֵאֵת־אָבִיהָfrom her fatherהַשָּׂדֶהthe fieldוַתִּצְנַחand she went downמֵעַלfrom uponהַחֲמוֹרthe donkeyוַיֹּאמֶר־לָהּand he said to herכָּלֵבCalebמַה־לָּךְ׃what to you

    And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

15. 15

    וַתֹּאמֶרand saidלוֹto himהָבָה־לִּיgive to meבְרָכָהa blessingכִּיforאֶרֶץthe land ofהַנֶּגֶבthe southנְתַתָּנִיyou have given to meוְנָתַתָּהand you shall giveלִיto meגֻּלֹּתthe springsמָיִםof waterוַיִּתֶּן־לָהּand he gave herכָּלֵבCalebאֵת־גֻּלֹּתthe springsעִלִּיתupperוְאֵתandגֻּלֹּתthe springsתַּחְתִּית׃nether

    And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

16. 16

    וּבְנֵיand sons ofקֵינִיthe Keniteחֹתֵןthe father in law ofמֹשֶׁהMosesעָלוּthey ascendedמֵעִירfrom the city ofהַתְּמָרִיםthe palm treesאֶת־בְּנֵיthe sons ofיְהוּדָהJudahמִדְבַּרthe wilderness ofיְהוּדָהJudahאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּנֶגֶבin the south ofעֲרָדAradוַיֵּלֶךְand wentוַיֵּשֶׁבand dweltאֶת־הָעָם׃the people

    And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

17. 17

    וַיֵּלֶךְand wentיְהוּדָהJudahאֶת־שִׁמְעוֹןSimeonאָחִיוhis brotherוַיַּכּוּand struckאֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteיוֹשֵׁבthat inhabitedצְפַתZephathוַיַּחֲרִימוּand they totally destroyedאוֹתָהּitוַיִּקְרָאand calledאֶת־שֵׁם־הָעִירname of the cityחׇרְמָה׃Hormah

    And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

18. 18

    וַיִּלְכֹּדand he capturedיְהוּדָהJudahאֶת־עַזָּהGazaוְאֶת־גְּבוּלָהּand its territoryוְאֶת־אַשְׁקְלוֹןand Ashkelonוְאֶת־גְּבוּלָהּand its territoryוְאֶת־עֶקְרוֹןand Ekronוְאֶת־גְּבוּלָהּ׃and its territory

    Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.

19. 19

    וַיְהִיand wasיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־יְהוּדָהwith Judahוַיֹּרֶשׁand he dispossessedאֶת־הָהָרthe mountainכִּיbutלֹאcould notלְהוֹרִישׁto drive outאֶת־יֹשְׁבֵיthe inhabitants ofהָעֵמֶקthe valleyכִּי־רֶכֶבbecause chariotryבַּרְזֶלironלָהֶם׃to them

    And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

20. 20

    וַיִּתְּנוּand they gaveלְכָלֵבto Calebאֶת־חֶבְרוֹןHebronכַּאֲשֶׁרasדִּבֶּרspokeמֹשֶׁהMosesוַיּוֹרֶשׁand he expelledמִשָּׁםfrom thereאֶת־שְׁלֹשָׁהthreeבְּנֵיthe sons ofהָעֲנָק׃the Anak

    And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

21. 21

    וְאֶת־הַיְבוּסִיand the Jebusiteיֹשֵׁבwho dwell inיְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםJerusalemלֹאnotהוֹרִישׁוּdrove outבְּנֵיthe sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminוַיֵּשֶׁבand dweltהַיְבוּסִיthe Jebusiteאֶת־בְּנֵיthe sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminבִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםin Jerusalemעַדuntilהַיּוֹםthe dayהַזֶּה׃this

    And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22. 22

    וַיַּעֲלוּand they ascendedבֵית־יוֹסֵףhouse of Josephגַּם־הֵםalso theyבֵּית־אֵלBeth-elוַיהֹוָהand the LORDעִמָּם׃with them

    And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el: and the LORD was with them.

23. 23

    וַיָּתִירוּand they caused to spy outבֵית־יוֹסֵףhouse of Josephבְּבֵית־אֵלin Beth-elוְשֵׁם־הָעִירand the name of the cityלְפָנִיםformerlyלוּז׃Luz

    And the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth-el. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

24. 24

    וַיִּרְאוּand they sawהַשֹּׁמְרִיםthe watchersאִישׁa manיוֹצֵאgoes outמִן־הָעִירfrom the cityוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidלוֹto himהַרְאֵנוּshow usנָאI prayאֶת־מְבוֹאthe entrance ofהָעִירthe cityוְעָשִׂינוּand we will showעִמְּךָwith youחָסֶד׃mercy

    And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

25. 25

    וַיַּרְאֵםand he showed themאֶת־מְבוֹאthe entrance ofהָעִירthe cityוַיַּכּוּand struckאֶת־הָעִירthe cityלְפִי־חָרֶבby the edge of the swordוְאֶת־הָאִישׁand the manוְאֶת־כׇּל־מִשְׁפַּחְתּוֹand all his familyשִׁלֵּחוּ׃they let go

    And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

26. 26

    וַיֵּלֶךְand wentהָאִישׁthe manאֶרֶץthe land ofהַחִתִּיםthe Hittitesוַיִּבֶןand builtעִירa cityוַיִּקְרָאand calledשְׁמָהּits nameלוּזLuzהוּאheשְׁמָהּits nameעַדuntilהַיּוֹםthe dayהַזֶּה׃this

    And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

27. 27

    וְלֹא־הוֹרִישׁand not drove outמְנַשֶּׁהManassehאֶת־בֵּית־שְׁאָןBeth-sheanוְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶיהָand its daughtersוְאֶת־תַּעְנַךְand Taanachוְאֶת־בְּנֹתֶיהָand its daughtersוְאֶת־[יוֹשְׁבֵי]and the inhabitants of(יושב)דוֹרDorוְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶיהָand its daughtersוְאֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵיand the inhabitants ofיִבְלְעָםIbleamוְאֶת־בְּנֹתֶיהָand its daughtersוְאֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵיand the inhabitants ofמְגִדּוֹMegiddoוְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶיהָand its daughtersוַיּוֹאֶלand wouldהַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteלָשֶׁבֶתto dwellבָּאָרֶץin the landהַזֹּאת׃this

    Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

28. 28

    וַיְהִיand it came to passכִּי־חָזַקwhen was strongיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיָּשֶׂםand he setאֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteלָמַסforced laborוְהוֹרֵישׁbut utterlyלֹאnotהוֹרִישׁוֹ׃drive them out

    And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

29. 29

    וְאֶפְרַיִםand Ephraimלֹאnotהוֹרִישׁdrove outאֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteהַיּוֹשֵׁבthe one dwellingבְּגָזֶרin Gezerוַיֵּשֶׁבand dweltהַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteבְּקִרְבּוֹin the midst of himבְּגָזֶר׃in Gezer

    Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30. 30

    זְבוּלֻןZebulunלֹאnotהוֹרִישׁdrove outאֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵיthe inhabitants ofקִטְרוֹןKitronוְאֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵיand the inhabitants ofנַהֲלֹלNahalolוַיֵּשֶׁבand dweltהַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteבְּקִרְבּוֹin the midst of himוַיִּהְיוּand they wereלָמַס׃forced labor

    Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31. 31

    אָשֵׁרAsherלֹאnotהוֹרִישׁdrove outאֶת־יֹשְׁבֵיthe inhabitants ofעַכּוֹAccoוְאֶת־יוֹשְׁבֵיand the inhabitants ofצִידוֹןZidonוְאֶת־אַחְלָבand Ahlabוְאֶת־אַכְזִיבand Achzibוְאֶת־חֶלְבָּהand Helbahוְאֶת־אֲפִיקand Aphekוְאֶת־רְחֹב׃and Rehob

    Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

32. 32

    וַיֵּשֶׁבand dweltהָאָשֵׁרִיthe Asheritesבְּקֶרֶבamongהַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteיֹשְׁבֵיinhabitants ofהָאָרֶץthe landכִּיforלֹאnotהוֹרִישׁוֹ׃has dispossessed he

    But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

33. 33

    נַפְתָּלִיNaphtaliלֹא־הוֹרִישׁnot drove outאֶת־יֹשְׁבֵיthe inhabitants ofבֵית־שֶׁמֶשׁBeth-shemeshוְאֶת־יֹשְׁבֵיand inhabitants ofבֵית־עֲנָתBeth-anathוַיֵּשֶׁבand dweltבְּקֶרֶבamongהַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteיֹשְׁבֵיinhabitants ofהָאָרֶץthe landוְיֹשְׁבֵיand the inhabitants ofבֵית־שֶׁמֶשׁBeth-shemeshוּבֵיתand Beth-עֲנָתanathהָיוּwereלָהֶםto themלָמַס׃forced labor

    Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto them.

34. 34

    וַיִּלְחֲצוּand they pressedהָאֱמֹרִיthe Amoriteאֶת־בְּנֵי־דָןsons of Danהָהָרָהto the mountainכִּי־לֹאthat notנְתָנוֹthey suffered himלָרֶדֶתto descendלָעֵמֶק׃to the valley

    And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

35. 35

    וַיּוֹאֶלand wouldהָאֱמֹרִיthe Amoriteלָשֶׁבֶתto dwellבְּהַר־חֶרֶסon the mount of Heresבְּאַיָּלוֹןin Aijalonוּבְשַׁעַלְבִיםand in Shaalbimוַתִּכְבַּדand grew heavyיַדthe hand ofבֵּית־יוֹסֵףhouse of Josephוַיִּהְיוּand they wereלָמַס׃forced labor

    But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

36. 36

    וּגְבוּלand the border ofהָאֱמֹרִיthe Amoriteמִמַּעֲלֵהfrom the ascent ofעַקְרַבִּיםAkrabbimמֵהַסֶּלַעfrom Selaוָמָעְלָה׃and upwards

    And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
