   And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.

   And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there four whole months.

   And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

   And his father in law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהָרְבִיעִיha/re/vi/Ithe fourthוַיַּשְׁכִּימוּvay/yash/KI/muand they rose earlyבַבֹּקֶרvab/BO/kerin the morningוַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand he rose upלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto departוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲבִיa/VIthe father ofהַנַּעֲרָהhan/na/a/RAthe young womanאֶל־חֲתָנוֹel-cha/ta/NOto his son-in-lawסְעָדse/ADstrengthenלִבְּךָlib/be/KHAyour heartפַּת־לֶחֶםpat-LE/chemwith a morsel of breadוְאַחַרve/a/CHARand afterwardתֵּלֵכוּ׃te/LE/khuyou may go

   And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.

   And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel's father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.

   And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.

   וַיַּשְׁכֵּםvay/yash/KEMand he rose earlyבַּבֹּקֶרbab/BO/kerin the morningבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַחֲמִישִׁיha/cha/mi/SHIthe fifthלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto departוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲבִיa/VIthe father ofהַנַּעֲרָהhan/na/a/RAthe young womanסְעׇד־נָאse/OD-nastrengthen I prayלְבָבְךָle/va/ve/KHAyour heartוְהִתְמַהְמְהוּve/hit/mah/me/HUand tarryעַד־נְטוֹתad-ne/TOTuntil declinesהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayוַיֹּאכְלוּvay/yo/khe/LUand they ateשְׁנֵיהֶם׃she/ne/HEMboth of them

   And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel's father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.

   And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

    וְלֹא־אָבָהve/LO-a/VAbut would notהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manלָלוּןla/LUNstay that nightוַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand he rose upוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand departedוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameעַד־נֹכַחad-NO/khachover againstיְבוּסYe/VUSJebusהִיאhithat isיְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִםYe/ru/sha/LA/yimJerusalemוְעִמּוֹve/im/MOand with him wereצֶמֶדTSE/meda pair ofחֲמוֹרִיםcha/mo/RIMdonkeysחֲבוּשִׁיםcha/vu/SHIMsaddledוּפִילַגְשׁוֹu/fi/lag/SHOand his concubineעִמּוֹ׃im/MOwith him

    But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.

    הֵםhemwhen they wereעִם־יְבוּסim-Ye/VUSby Jebusוְהַיּוֹםve/hay/YOMand the dayרַדradwas far spentמְאֹדme/ODveryוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַנַּעַרhan/NA/arthe servantאֶל־אֲדֹנָיוel-a/do/NAYVto his masterלְכָה־נָּאle/KHA-nacome I prayוְנָסוּרָהve/na/SU/raand let us turn asideאֶל־עִיר־הַיְבוּסִיel-Ir-hay/vu/SIto the city of the Jebusitesהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisוְנָלִיןve/na/LINand lodgeבָּהּ׃bain it

    And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

12. 12

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himאֲדֹנָיוa/do/NAYVhis masterלֹאlonotנָסוּרna/SURwe will turn asideאֶל־עִירel-irinto the city ofנׇכְרִיnokh/RIforeignersאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹא־מִבְּנֵיlo-mib/be/NEis not of the children ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelהֵנָּהHEN/nahereוְעָבַרְנוּve/a/VAR/nuand we will pass overעַד־גִּבְעָה׃ad-Giv/Ato Gibeah

    And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלְנַעֲרוֹle/na/a/ROto his servantלְךָle/KHAcomeוְנִקְרְבָהve/nik/re/VAand let us draw nearבְּאַחַדbe/a/CHADto one ofהַמְּקֹמוֹתham/me/ko/MOTthese placesוְלַנּוּve/LAN/nuand lodgeבַגִּבְעָהVag/giv/Ain Gibeahאוֹoorבָרָמָה׃Va/ra/MAin Ramah

    And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.

    וַיַּעַבְרוּvay/ya/av/RUand they passed onוַיֵּלֵכוּvay/ye/LE/khuand went their wayוַתָּבֹאvat/ta/VOand setלָהֶםla/HEMon themהַשֶּׁמֶשׁhash/SHE/meshthe sunאֵצֶלE/tselbyהַגִּבְעָהHag/giv/AGibeahאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich belongsלְבִנְיָמִן׃le/Vin/ya/MINto Benjamin

    And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.

    וַיָּסֻרוּvay/ya/SU/ruand they turned asideשָׁםshamthereלָבוֹאla/VOto go inלָלוּןla/LUNand to lodgeבַּגִּבְעָהbag/Giv/Ain Gibeahוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand he went inוַיֵּשֶׁבvay/YE/shevand sat downבִּרְחוֹבbir/CHOVin the square ofהָעִירha/IRthe cityוְאֵיןve/ENfor there was noאִישׁishmanמְאַסֵּף־אוֹתָםme/as/SEF-o/TAMwho took them inהַבַּיְתָהhab/BAY/tainto his houseלָלוּן׃la/LUNto lodge

    And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdאִישׁisha manזָקֵןza/KENoldבָּאbacameמִן־מַעֲשֵׂהוּmin-ma/a/SE/hufrom his workמִן־הַשָּׂדֶהmin-has/sa/DEfrom the fieldבָּעֶרֶבba/E/revin the eveningוְהָאִישׁve/ha/ISHand the man wasמֵהַרme/HARfrom the hill country ofאֶפְרַיִםEf/RA/yimEphraimוְהוּא־גָרve/HU-garand he sojournedבַּגִּבְעָהbag/Giv/Ain Gibeahוְאַנְשֵׁיve/an/SHEand the men ofהַמָּקוֹםham/ma/KOMthe placeבְּנֵיbe/NEwere the children ofיְמִינִי׃Ye/mi/NIBenjamin

    And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.

    וַיִּשָּׂאvay/yis/SAand he lifted upעֵינָיוe/NAYVhis eyesוַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawאֶת־הָאִישׁet-ha/ISHthe manהָאֹרֵחַha/o/RE/achthe wayfarerבִּרְחֹבbir/CHOVin the square ofהָעִירha/IRthe cityוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manהַזָּקֵןhaz/za/KENthe oldאָנָהA/nawhereתֵלֵךְte/LEKHare you goingוּמֵאַיִןu/me/A/yinand whereתָּבוֹא׃ta/VOdo you come from

    And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himעֹבְרִיםov/RIMare passingאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweמִבֵּית־לֶחֶםmib/BET-LE/chemfrom Beth-lehemיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahעַד־יַרְכְּתֵיad-yar/ke/TEto the remote parts ofהַר־אֶפְרַיִםhaR-ef/RA/yimthe hill country of Ephraimמִשָּׁםmish/SHAMfrom thereאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIam Iוָאֵלֵךְva/e/LEKHand I wentעַד־בֵּיתad-Betto Beth-לֶחֶםLE/chemlehemיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוְאֶת־בֵּיתve/ET-betand to the house ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֲנִיa/NIIהֹלֵךְho/LEKHam goingוְאֵיןve/ENand there is noאִישׁishmanמְאַסֵּףme/as/SEFwho takesאוֹתִיo/TImeהַבָּיְתָה׃hab/BAY/tainto his house

    And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.

19. 19

    וְגַם־תֶּבֶןve/GAM-TE/venyet both strawגַּם־מִסְפּוֹאgam-mis/POand fodderיֵשׁyeshthere isלַחֲמוֹרֵינוּla/cha/mo/RE/nufor our donkeysוְגַםve/GAMand alsoלֶחֶםLE/chembreadוָיַיִןva/YA/yinand wineיֶשׁ־לִיyesh-lithere is for meוְלַאֲמָתֶךָve/la/a/ma/TE/khaand for your maidservantוְלַנַּעַרve/lan/NA/arand for the young manעִם־עֲבָדֶיךָim-a/va/DE/khawith your servantsאֵיןenthere is noמַחְסוֹרmach/SORlack ofכׇּל־דָּבָר׃kol-da/VARanything

    Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manהַזָּקֵןhaz/za/KENthe oldשָׁלוֹםsha/LOMpeaceלָךְlakhbe with youרַקrakonlyכׇּל־מַחְסוֹרְךָkol-mach/sor/KHAall your lackעָלָיa/LAYbe upon meרַקrakonlyבָּרְחוֹבba/re/CHOVin the squareאַל־תָּלַן׃al-ta/LANdo not lodge

    And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.

21. 21

    וַיְבִיאֵהוּvay/vi/E/huand he brought himלְבֵיתוֹle/ve/TOto his house[וַיָּבׇל]vay/YA/voland gave fodderלַחֲמוֹרִיםla/cha/mo/RIMto the donkeysוַיִּרְחֲצוּvay/yir/cha/TSUand they washedרַגְלֵיהֶםrag/le/HEMtheir feetוַיֹּאכְלוּvay/yo/khe/LUand they ateוַיִּשְׁתּוּ׃vay/yish/TUand drank

    So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

    הֵמָּהHEM/maas theyמֵיטִיבִיםme/ti/VIMwere making merryאֶת־לִבָּםet-lib/BAMtheir heartsוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdאַנְשֵׁיan/SHEthe men ofהָעִירha/IRthe cityאַנְשֵׁיan/SHEmenבְנֵי־בְלִיַּעַלve/NE-ve/liy/YA/alworthless fellowsנָסַבּוּna/SAB/buthey surroundedאֶת־הַבַּיִתet-hab/BA/yitthe houseמִתְדַּפְּקִיםmit/dap/pe/KIMbeatingעַל־הַדָּלֶתal-had/DA/leton the doorוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֶל־הָאִישׁel-ha/ISHto the manבַּעַלBA/althe master ofהַבַּיִתhab/BA/yitthe houseהַזָּקֵןhaz/za/KENthe old manלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהוֹצֵאho/TSEbring outאֶת־הָאִישׁet-ha/ISHthe manאֲשֶׁר־בָּאa/SHER-bawho cameאֶל־בֵּיתְךָel-be/te/KHAto your houseוְנֵדָעֶנּוּ׃ve/ne/da/EN/nuthat we may know him

    Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.

    וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manבַּעַלBA/althe master ofהַבַּיִתhab/BA/yitthe houseוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵהֶםa/le/HEMto themאַל־אַחַיal-a/CHAYno my brothersאַל־תָּרֵעוּal-ta/RE/udo not act wickedlyנָאnaI prayאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REseeingאֲשֶׁר־בָּאa/SHER-bathat has comeהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisאֶל־בֵּיתִיel-be/TIto my houseאַל־תַּעֲשׂוּal-ta/a/SUdo not doאֶת־הַנְּבָלָהet-han/ne/va/LAthe disgraceful follyהַזֹּאת׃haz/ZOTthis

    And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.

    הִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdבִתִּיvit/TImy daughterהַבְּתוּלָהhab/be/tu/LAa virginוּפִילַגְשֵׁהוּu/fi/lag/SHE/huand his concubineאוֹצִיאָה־נָּאo/tsi/A-nalet me bring out I prayאוֹתָםo/TAMthemוְעַנּוּve/an/NUand humbleאוֹתָםo/TAMthemוַעֲשׂוּva/a/SUand doלָהֶםla/HEMto themהַטּוֹבhat/TOVwhat is goodבְּעֵינֵיכֶםbe/e/ne/KHEMin your eyesוְלָאִישׁve/la/ISHbut to the manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלֹאlonotתַעֲשׂוּta/a/SUdoדְּבַרde/VARthe thing ofהַנְּבָלָהhan/ne/va/LAthe disgraceful follyהַזֹּאת׃haz/ZOTthis

    Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.

    וְלֹא־אָבוּve/LO-a/VUbut would notהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menלִשְׁמֹעַlish/MO/ahearkenלוֹloto himוַיַּחֲזֵקvay/ya/cha/ZEKso took holdהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manבְּפִילַגְשׁוֹbe/fi/lag/SHOof his concubineוַיֹּצֵאvay/yo/TSEand brought herאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themהַחוּץha/CHUTSoutsideוַיֵּדְעוּvay/yed/Uand they knewאוֹתָהּo/TAherוַיִּתְעַלְּלוּ־בָהּvay/yit/al/le/LU-vaand abused herכׇּל־הַלַּיְלָהkol-hal/LAY/laall nightעַד־הַבֹּקֶרad-hab/BO/keruntil the morningוַיְשַׁלְּחוּהָvay/shal/le/CHU/haand let her go(בעלות)vlavat[כַּעֲלוֹת]ka/a/LOTwhen came upהַשָּׁחַר׃hash/SHA/charthe dawn

    But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

    וַתָּבֹאvat/ta/VOand cameהָאִשָּׁהha/ish/SHAthe womanלִפְנוֹתlif/NOTat the dawning ofהַבֹּקֶרhab/BO/kerthe morningוַתִּפֹּלvat/tip/POLand fell downפֶּתַחPE/tachat the door ofבֵּית־הָאִישׁbet-ha/ISHthe man’s houseאֲשֶׁר־אֲדוֹנֶיהָa/SHER-a/do/NE/hawhere her lord wasשָּׁםshamthereעַד־הָאוֹר׃ad-ha/ORuntil it was light

    Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.

    וַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand aroseאֲדֹנֶיהָa/do/NE/haher lordבַּבֹּקֶרbab/BO/kerin the morningוַיִּפְתַּחvay/yif/TACHand he openedדַּלְתוֹתdal/TOTthe doors ofהַבַּיִתhab/BA/yitthe houseוַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto goלְדַרְכּוֹle/dar/KOon his wayוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdהָאִשָּׁהha/ish/SHAthe womanפִילַגְשׁוֹfi/lag/SHOhis concubineנֹפֶלֶתno/FE/lethad fallen downפֶּתַחPE/tachat the door ofהַבַּיִתhab/BA/yitthe houseוְיָדֶיהָve/ya/DE/haand her handsעַל־הַסַּף׃al-has/SAFon the threshold

    And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלֶיהָe/LE/hato herקוּמִיKU/miupוְנֵלֵכָהve/ne/LE/khaand let us goוְאֵיןve/ENbut there was noעֹנֶהo/NEanswerוַיִּקָּחֶהָvay/yik/ka/CHE/hathen he took herעַל־הַחֲמוֹרal-ha/cha/MORupon the donkeyוַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand rose upהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentלִמְקֹמוֹ׃lim/ko/MOto his place

    And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameאֶל־בֵּיתוֹel-be/TOto his houseוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookאֶת־הַמַּאֲכֶלֶתet-ham/ma/a/KHE/letthe knifeוַיַּחֲזֵקvay/ya/cha/ZEKand took holdבְּפִילַגְשׁוֹbe/fi/lag/SHOof his concubineוַיְנַתְּחֶהָvay/nat/te/CHE/haand divided herלַעֲצָמֶיהָla/a/tsa/ME/haby her bonesלִשְׁנֵים־עָשָׂרlish/NEM-a/SARinto twelveנְתָחִיםne/ta/CHIMpiecesוַיְשַׁלְּחֶהָvay/shal/le/CHE/haand sent herבְּכֹלbe/KHOLinto allגְּבוּלge/VULthe territory ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Yis/ra/ELIsrael

    And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it wasכׇל־הָרֹאֶהkhol-ha/ro/Ethat all who saw itוְאָמַרve/a/MARand saidלֹא־נִהְיְתָהlo-nih/ye/TAthere has been noוְלֹא־נִרְאֲתָהve/LO-nir/a/TAnor seenכָּזֹאתka/ZOTsuch a thingלְמִיּוֹםle/miy/YOMfrom the dayעֲלוֹתa/LOTthat came upבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלbe/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelמֵאֶרֶץme/E/retsfrom the land ofמִצְרַיִםMits/RA/yimEgyptעַדadtoהַיּוֹםhay/YOMdayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisשִׂימוּ־לָכֶםSI/mu-la/KHEMconsiderעָלֶיהָa/LE/haitעֻצוּU/tsutake counselוְדַבֵּרוּ׃ve/dab/BE/ruand speak

    And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
