1. 1

   וַיֵּצְאוּand they went outכׇּל־בְּנֵיall sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַתִּקָּהֵלand it assembledהָעֵדָהthe congregationכְּאִישׁas a manאֶחָדoneלְמִדָּןfrom Danוְעַד־בְּאֵרand unto Beer-שֶׁבַעshebaוְאֶרֶץand land ofהַגִּלְעָדGileadאֶל־יְהֹוָהto the LORDהַמִּצְפָּה׃Mizpah

   Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.

   וַיִּתְיַצְּבוּand they stoodפִּנּוֹתthe chief ofכׇּל־הָעָםall the peopleכֹּלallשִׁבְטֵיtribes ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelבִּקְהַלin the assembly ofעַםpeopleהָאֱלֹהִיםthe Godאַרְבַּעfourמֵאוֹתhundredאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenרַגְלִיfootmenשֹׁלֵף־חָרֶב׃who drew a sword

   And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

   וַיִּשְׁמְעוּand they heardבְּנֵיthe sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminכִּי־עָלוּbecause they ascendedבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of IsraelהַמִּצְפָּהMizpahוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelדַּבְּרוּspeakאֵיכָהhowנִהְיְתָהit has occurredהָרָעָהthe evilהַזֹּאת׃this

   (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?

   וַיַּעַןand he answeredהָאִישׁthe manהַלֵּוִיthe Leviteאִישׁthe husband ofהָאִשָּׁהthe womanהַנִּרְצָחָהthe murderedוַיֹּאמַרand saidהַגִּבְעָתָהto Gibeahאֲשֶׁרwhichלְבִנְיָמִןfor Benjaminבָּאתִיwhen I cameאֲנִיIוּפִילַגְשִׁיand my concubineלָלוּן׃to stay the night

   And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

   וַיָּקֻמוּand they rose upעָלַיupon meבַּעֲלֵיthe men ofהַגִּבְעָהGibeahוַיָּסֹבּוּand they surroundedעָלַיupon meאֶת־הַבַּיִתthe houseלָיְלָהnightאוֹתִיmeדִּמּוּthey intendedלַהֲרֹגslayוְאֶת־פִּילַגְשִׁיand my concubineעִנּוּthey abusedוַתָּמֹת׃and she died

   And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.

   וָאֹחֵזand heldבְּפִילַגְשִׁיon my concubineוָאֲנַתְּחֶהָand I cut in pieces herוָאֲשַׁלְּחֶהָand I sent off herבְּכׇל־שְׂדֵהin all the field ofנַחֲלַתthe inheritance ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelכִּיforעָשׂוּthey didזִמָּהwickednessוּנְבָלָהand disgraceful follyבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

   And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

   הִנֵּהbeholdכֻלְּכֶםall of youבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהָבוּgiveלָכֶםto youדָּבָרadviceוְעֵצָהand counselהֲלֹם׃here

   Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.

8. 8

   וַיָּקׇםand aroseכׇּל־הָעָםall the peopleכְּאִישׁas a manאֶחָדoneלֵאמֹרsayingלֹאnotנֵלֵךְwe should goאִישׁa manלְאׇהֳלוֹhis tentוְלֹאand notנָסוּרwe will turn asideאִישׁa manלְבֵיתוֹ׃to his house

   And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.

9. 9

   וְעַתָּהand nowזֶהthisהַדָּבָרthe thingאֲשֶׁרwhichנַעֲשֶׂהwe will doלַגִּבְעָהto Gibeahעָלֶיהָupon itבְּגוֹרָל׃by lot

   But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;

10. 10

    וְלָקַחְנוּand we will takeעֲשָׂרָהtenאֲנָשִׁיםmenלַמֵּאָהto the hundredלְכֹלfor allשִׁבְטֵיtribes ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוּמֵאָהand one hundredלָאֶלֶףto the thousandוְאֶלֶףand one thousandלָרְבָבָהto the ten thousandלָקַחַתto takeצֵדָהprovisionsלָעָםto the peopleלַעֲשׂוֹתto doלְבוֹאָםto their comingלְגֶבַעto GebaבִּנְיָמִןBenjaminכְּכׇל־הַנְּבָלָהas all the disgraceful follyאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהdidבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

11. 11

    וַיֵּאָסֵףand he gathered himselfכׇּל־אִישׁall the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֶל־הָעִירto the cityכְּאִישׁas a manאֶחָדoneחֲבֵרִים׃united

    So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

12. 12

    וַיִּשְׁלְחוּand sentשִׁבְטֵיtribes ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֲנָשִׁיםmenבְּכׇל־שִׁבְטֵיin all tribes ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminלֵאמֹרsayingמָהwhatהָרָעָהthe evilהַזֹּאתthisאֲשֶׁרwhichנִהְיְתָהit has occurredבָּכֶם׃in you

    And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?

13. 13

    וְעַתָּהand nowתְּנוּgiveאֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁיםthe menבְּנֵי־בְלִיַּעַלsons of Belialאֲשֶׁרwhichבַּגִּבְעָהin Gibeahוּנְמִיתֵםso we may put to death themוּנְבַעֲרָהand let us removeרָעָהevilמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלfrom Israelוְלֹאand notאָבוּbe[בְּנֵי]the sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminלִשְׁמֹעַto hearבְּקוֹלthe voice ofאֲחֵיהֶםtheir brethrenבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃sons of Israel

    Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:

14. 14

    וַיֵּאָסְפוּand they were gathered togetherבְנֵי־בִנְיָמִןsons of Benjaminמִן־הֶעָרִיםfrom the citiesהַגִּבְעָתָהto Gibeahלָצֵאתto come forthלַמִּלְחָמָהto the warעִם־בְּנֵיwith the sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

15. 15

    וַיִּתְפָּקְדוּand they were musteredבְנֵיthe sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatמֵהֶעָרִיםof the citiesעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyוְשִׁשָּׁהand sixאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenשֹׁלֵףwho drewחָרֶבa swordלְבַדaloneמִיֹּשְׁבֵיfrom the inhabitants ofהַגִּבְעָהGibeahהִתְפָּקְדוּwho they were musteredשְׁבַעsevenמֵאוֹתhundredאִישׁmenבָּחוּר׃chosen

    And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

16. 16

    מִכֹּלof allהָעָםthe peopleהַזֶּהthisשְׁבַעsevenמֵאוֹתhundredאִישׁmenבָּחוּרchosenאִטֵּרrestricted ofיַד־יְמִינוֹhis right handכׇּל־זֶהall thisקֹלֵעַwas slingingבָּאֶבֶןin the stoneאֶל־הַשַּׂעֲרָהat a hairוְלֹאand notיַחֲטִא׃he missed

    Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.

17. 17

    וְאִישׁand the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהִתְפָּקְדוּwho they were musteredלְבַדaloneמִבִּנְיָמִןfrom Benjaminאַרְבַּעfourמֵאוֹתhundredאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenשֹׁלֵףwho drewחָרֶבa swordכׇּל־זֶהall thisאִישׁa manמִלְחָמָה׃war

    And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

18. 18

    וַיָּקֻמוּand they rose upוַיַּעֲלוּand they ascendedבֵית־אֵלBeth-elוַיִּשְׁאֲלוּand they askedבֵאלֹהִיםunto Godוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelמִיwhoיַעֲלֶה־לָּנוּshall go up for usבַתְּחִלָּהat the firstלַמִּלְחָמָהto the warעִם־בְּנֵיwith the sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminוַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהֹוָהthe LORDיְהוּדָהJudahבַתְּחִלָּה׃at the first

    And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.

19. 19

    וַיָּקוּמוּbut there aroseבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelבַּבֹּקֶרin the morningוַיַּחֲנוּand they encampedעַל־הַגִּבְעָה׃against Gibeah

    And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

20. 20

    וַיֵּצֵאand went outאִישׁthe men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלַמִּלְחָמָהto the warעִם־בִּנְיָמִןwith Benjaminוַיַּעַרְכוּand they deployedאִתָּםwith themאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלman of Israelמִלְחָמָהwarאֶל־הַגִּבְעָה׃at Gibeah

    And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.

21. 21

    וַיֵּצְאוּand they went outבְנֵי־בִנְיָמִןsons of Benjaminמִן־הַגִּבְעָהfrom Gibeahוַיַּשְׁחִיתוּand they destroyedבְיִשְׂרָאֵלin Israelבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatשְׁנַיִםtwoוְעֶשְׂרִיםand twentyאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenאָרְצָה׃to the earth

    And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.

22. 22

    וַיִּתְחַזֵּקand encouraged themselvesהָעָםthe peopleאִישׁthe men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיֹּסִפוּand they repeatedלַעֲרֹךְto battleמִלְחָמָהwarבַּמָּקוֹםin the placeאֲשֶׁר־עָרְכוּwhich they had deployedשָׁםthereבַּיּוֹםin the dayהָרִאשׁוֹן׃the first

    And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.

23. 23

    וַיַּעֲלוּand they ascendedבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelוַיִּבְכּוּand they weptלִפְנֵי־יְהֹוָהbefore the LORDעַד־הָעֶרֶבuntil the eveningוַיִּשְׁאֲלוּand they askedבַיהֹוָהof the LORDלֵאמֹרsayingהַאוֹסִיףwill I repeatלָגֶשֶׁתto come nearלַמִּלְחָמָהto the warעִם־בְּנֵיwith the sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminאָחִיmy brotherוַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהֹוָהthe LORDעֲלוּgo upאֵלָיו׃to him

    (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)

24. 24

    וַיִּקְרְבוּand they drew nearבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאֶל־בְּנֵיunto the sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַשֵּׁנִי׃the second

    And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

25. 25

    וַיֵּצֵאand went outבִנְיָמִןBenjaminלִקְרָאתָםto meet themמִן־הַגִּבְעָהfrom Gibeahבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַשֵּׁנִיthe secondוַיַּשְׁחִיתוּand they destroyedבִבְנֵיamong the people ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelעוֹדany moreשְׁמֹנַת־עָשָׂרeighteenאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenאָרְצָהto the earthכׇּל־אֵלֶּהall theseשֹׁלְפֵיdrawers ofחָרֶב׃a sword

    And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

26. 26

    וַיַּעֲלוּand they ascendedכׇל־בְּנֵיall sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְכׇל־הָעָםand all the peopleוַיָּבֹאוּand they cameבֵית־אֵלBeth-elוַיִּבְכּוּand they weptוַיֵּשְׁבוּand they had dweltשָׁםthereלִפְנֵיbeforeיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיָּצוּמוּand they fastedבַיּוֹם־הַהוּאin that dayעַד־הָעָרֶבuntil the eveningוַיַּעֲלוּand they ascendedעֹלוֹתburnt offeringsוּשְׁלָמִיםand peace offeringsלִפְנֵיbeforeיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

    Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

27. 27

    וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּand they askedבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelבַּיהֹוָהof the LORDוְשָׁםand thereאֲרוֹןthe ark ofבְּרִיתcovenant ofהָאֱלֹהִיםthe Godבַּיָּמִיםin the daysהָהֵם׃those

    And the children of Israel enquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

28. 28

    וּפִינְחָסand Phinehasבֶּן־אֶלְעָזָרson of Eleazarבֶּן־אַהֲרֹןson of Aaronעֹמֵדstandingלְפָנָיוbefore himבַּיָּמִיםin the daysהָהֵםthoseלֵאמֹרsayingהַאוֹסִףwill I repeatעוֹדany moreלָצֵאתto come forthלַמִּלְחָמָהto the warעִם־בְּנֵי־בִנְיָמִןwith the sons of Benjaminאָחִיmy brotherאִם־אֶחְדָּלif I will ceaseוַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהֹוָהthe LORDעֲלוּgo upכִּיforמָחָרon the morrowאֶתְּנֶנּוּI will give himבְיָדֶךָ׃into your hands

    And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

29. 29

    וַיָּשֶׂםand setיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֹרְבִיםare lying in waitאֶל־הַגִּבְעָהagainst Gibeahסָבִיב׃all around

    And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.

30. 30

    וַיַּעֲלוּand they ascendedבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאֶל־בְּנֵיunto the sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַשְּׁלִישִׁיthe thirdוַיַּעַרְכוּand they deployedאֶל־הַגִּבְעָהagainst Gibeahכְּפַעַםas timeבְּפָעַם׃at other time

    And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

31. 31

    וַיֵּצְאוּand they went outבְנֵי־בִנְיָמִןsons of Benjaminלִקְרַאתto meetהָעָםthe peopleהׇנְתְּקוּthey were drawn awayמִן־הָעִירfrom the cityוַיָּחֵלּוּand beganלְהַכּוֹתto smiteמֵהָעָםthe peopleחֲלָלִיםthose slainכְּפַעַםas timeבְּפַעַםat other timeבַּמְסִלּוֹתin the highwaysאֲשֶׁרwhichאַחַתoneעֹלָהgoes upבֵית־אֵלBeth-elוְאַחַתand oneגִּבְעָתָהto Gibeahבַּשָּׂדֶהin the fieldכִּשְׁלֹשִׁיםabout thirtyאִישׁmenבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

32. 32

    וַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidבְּנֵיthe sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminנִגָּפִיםdefeatedהֵםtheyלְפָנֵינוּbefore usכְּבָרִאשֹׁנָהas at the former timeוּבְנֵיand sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאָמְרוּthey saidנָנוּסָהlet us fleeוּנְתַקְּנוּהוּand draw them awayמִן־הָעִירfrom the cityאֶל־הַמְסִלּוֹת׃to the highways

    And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.

33. 33

    וְכֹלand allאִישׁthe men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelקָמוּrose upמִמְּקוֹמוֹfrom its placeוַיַּעַרְכוּand they deployedבְּבַעַלat BaalתָּמָרTamarוְאֹרֵבand the ambusher ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelמֵגִיחַwas bursting forthמִמְּקֹמוֹfrom his placeמִמַּעֲרֵהfrom the meadows ofגָבַע׃Geba

    And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baal-tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.

34. 34

    וַיָּבֹאוּand they cameמִנֶּגֶדagainstלַגִּבְעָהGibeahעֲשֶׂרֶתtenאֲלָפִיםthousandאִישׁmenבָּחוּרchosenמִכׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵלfrom all Israelוְהַמִּלְחָמָהand the battleכָּבֵדָהit was heavyוְהֵםand theyלֹאnotיָדְעוּthey knewכִּי־נֹגַעַתbecause was about to touchעֲלֵיהֶםupon themהָרָעָה׃the evil

    And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.

35. 35

    וַיִּגֹּףand struckיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־בִּנְיָמִןBenjaminלִפְנֵיbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיַּשְׁחִיתוּand they destroyedבְנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelבְּבִנְיָמִןamong Benjaminבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyוַחֲמִשָּׁהand fiveאֶלֶףthousandוּמֵאָהand one hundredאִישׁmenכׇּל־אֵלֶּהall theseשֹׁלֵף־חָרֶב׃who drew a sword

    And the LORD smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.

36. 36

    וַיִּרְאוּand they sawבְנֵי־בִנְיָמִןsons of Benjaminכִּיbecauseנִגָּפוּthey were defeatedוַיִּתְּנוּand they gaveאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלman of Israelמָקוֹםa placeלְבִנְיָמִןfor Benjaminכִּיbecauseבָטְחוּthey trustedאֶל־הָאֹרֵבto the ambushאֲשֶׁר־שָׂמוּwhich employedאֶל־הַגִּבְעָה׃beside Gibeah

    So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.

37. 37

    וְהָאֹרֵבand the ambusherהֵחִישׁוּthey made hasteוַיִּפְשְׁטוּand they made a raidאֶל־הַגִּבְעָהupon Gibeahוַיִּמְשֹׁךְand he drewהָאֹרֵבthe ambushוַיַּךְand he smoteאֶת־כׇּל־הָעִירall the cityלְפִי־חָרֶב׃by the edge of the sword

    And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

38. 38

    וְהַמּוֹעֵדand the appointed signהָיָהwasלְאִישׁto the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelעִם־הָאֹרֵבwith the ambushהֶרֶבa greatלְהַעֲלוֹתָםto make rise upמַשְׂאַתa rising ofהֶעָשָׁןthe smokeמִן־הָעִיר׃from the city

    Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.

39. 39

    וַיַּהֲפֹךְand he overturnedאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלman of Israelבַּמִּלְחָמָהin the battleוּבִנְיָמִןand Benjaminהֵחֵלbeganלְהַכּוֹתto smiteחֲלָלִיםthose slainבְּאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלof the men of Israelכִּשְׁלֹשִׁיםabout thirtyאִישׁmenכִּיforאָמְרוּthey saidאַךְbutנִגּוֹףsurelyנִגָּףdefeatedהוּאheלְפָנֵינוּbefore usכַּמִּלְחָמָהlike the battleהָרִאשֹׁנָה׃the first

    And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.

    וְהַמַּשְׂאֵתand the risingהֵחֵלָּהbeganלַעֲלוֹתto ascendמִן־הָעִירfrom the cityעַמּוּדthe pillar ofעָשָׁןsmokeוַיִּפֶןand he turnedבִּנְיָמִןBenjaminאַחֲרָיוafter himוְהִנֵּהand beholdעָלָהascendedכְלִיל־הָעִירthe whole of the cityהַשָּׁמָיְמָה׃unto the heavens

    But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.

41. 41

    וְאִישׁand the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהָפַךְturnedוַיִּבָּהֵלand he was terrifiedאִישׁa manבִּנְיָמִןBenjaminכִּיforרָאָהhe sawכִּי־נָגְעָהbecause it had touchedעָלָיוupon himהָרָעָה׃the evil

    And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.

42. 42

    וַיִּפְנוּand they turnedלִפְנֵיbeforeאִישׁthe men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֶל־דֶּרֶךְunto the way ofהַמִּדְבָּרthe wildernessוְהַמִּלְחָמָהand the battleהִדְבִּיקָתְהוּit overtook himוַאֲשֶׁרand whichמֵהֶעָרִיםof the citiesמַשְׁחִיתִיםwere destroyingאוֹתוֹhimבְּתוֹכוֹ׃in the midst thereof

    Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.

43. 43

    כִּתְּרוּthey surroundedאֶת־בִּנְיָמִןBenjaminהִרְדִיפֻהוּthey chased themמְנוּחָהwith easeהִדְרִיכֻהוּthey trod him downעַדuntilנֹכַחopposite toהַגִּבְעָהGibeahמִמִּזְרַח־שָׁמֶשׁ׃toward the sunrising

    Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

44. 44

    וַיִּפְּלוּand they fellמִבִּנְיָמִןfrom Benjaminשְׁמֹנָה־עָשָׂרeighteenאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenאֶת־כׇּל־אֵלֶּהall theseאַנְשֵׁי־חָיִל׃men of valor

    And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.

45. 45

    וַיִּפְנוּand they turnedוַיָּנֻסוּand they fledהַמִּדְבָּרָהinto the wildernessאֶל־סֶלַעto the rock ofהָרִמּוֹןthe Rimmonוַיְעֹלְלֻהוּand they gleaned of themבַּמְסִלּוֹתin the highwaysחֲמֵשֶׁתfiveאֲלָפִיםthousandאִישׁmenוַיַּדְבִּיקוּand they overtookאַחֲרָיוafter himעַד־גִּדְעֹםuntil Gidomוַיַּכּוּand struckמִמֶּנּוּfrom himאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandאִישׁ׃men

    And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.

46. 46

    וַיְהִיand it came to passכׇל־הַנֹּפְלִיםall the ones who have fallenמִבִּנְיָמִןfrom Benjaminעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyוַחֲמִשָּׁהand fiveאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenשֹׁלֵףwho drewחֶרֶבthe sword ofבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatאֶת־כׇּל־אֵלֶּהall theseאַנְשֵׁי־חָיִל׃men of valor

    So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

47. 47

    וַיִּפְנוּand they turnedוַיָּנֻסוּand they fledהַמִּדְבָּרָהinto the wildernessאֶל־סֶלַעto the rock ofהָרִמּוֹןthe Rimmonשֵׁשׁsixמֵאוֹתhundredאִישׁmenוַיֵּשְׁבוּand they had dweltבְּסֶלַעat the rock ofרִמּוֹןRimmonאַרְבָּעָהfourחֳדָשִׁים׃months

    But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.

48. 48

    וְאִישׁand the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelשָׁבוּturned againאֶל־בְּנֵיunto the sons ofבִנְיָמִןBenjaminוַיַּכּוּםand they smote themלְפִי־חֶרֶבby the edge of the swordמֵעִירfrom cityמְתֹםmenעַד־בְּהֵמָהuntil animalsעַדuntilכׇּל־הַנִּמְצָאall the one foundגַּםalsoכׇּל־הֶעָרִיםall the citiesהַנִּמְצָאוֹתthose which were foundשִׁלְּחוּthey setבָאֵשׁ׃in fire

    And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
