   In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

   And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.

   When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

   And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.

   And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלָהֶםla/HEMto themהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestלְכוּle/KHUgoלְשָׁלוֹםle/sha/LOMin peaceנֹכַחNO/khachbeforeיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDדַּרְכְּכֶםdar/ke/KHEMis your wayאֲשֶׁרa/SHERin whichתֵּלְכוּ־בָהּ׃tel/KHU-vayou go

   And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.

   Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.

   וַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameאֶל־אֲחֵיהֶםel-a/che/HEMto their brothersצׇרְעָהTsor/Aat Zorahוְאֶשְׁתָּאֹלve/Esh/ta/OLand Eshtaolוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidלָהֶםla/HEMto themאֲחֵיהֶםa/che/HEMtheir brothersמָהmawhatאַתֶּם׃at/TEMyou

   And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?

   וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidקוּמָהku/MAariseוְנַעֲלֶהve/na/a/LEand let us go upעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMagainst themכִּיkiforרָאִינוּra/I/nuwe have seenאֶת־הָאָרֶץet-ha/A/retsthe landוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdטוֹבָהto/VAit is goodמְאֹדme/ODveryוְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMand youמַחְשִׁיםmach/SHIMare stillאַל־תֵּעָצְלוּal-te/a/tse/LUdo not be slothfulלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto goלָבֹאla/VOto enterלָרֶשֶׁתla/RE/shetto possessאֶת־הָאָרֶץ׃et-ha/A/retsthe land

   And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.

    כְּבֹאֲכֶםke/vo/a/KHEMwhen you goתָּבֹאוּta/VO/uyou shall comeאֶל־עַםel-amto a peopleבֹּטֵחַbo/TE/achsecureוְהָאָרֶץve/ha/A/retsand the landרַחֲבַתra/cha/VATis broad ofיָדַיִםya/DA/yimhandsכִּי־נְתָנָהּki-ne/ta/NAfor has given itאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodבְּיֶדְכֶםbe/yed/KHEMinto your handמָקוֹםma/KOMa placeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhereאֵין־שָׁםen-shamthere is noמַחְסוֹרmach/SORlack ofכׇּל־דָּבָרkol-da/VARanythingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat isבָּאָרֶץ׃ba/A/retson earth

    When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.

    וַיִּסְעוּvay/yis/Uand set outמִשָּׁםmish/SHAMfrom thereמִמִּשְׁפַּחַתmim/mish/PA/chatof the clan ofהַדָּנִיhad/Da/NIthe Danitesמִצׇּרְעָהmits/Tsor/Afrom Zorahוּמֵאֶשְׁתָּאֹלu/Me/esh/ta/OLand from Eshtaolשֵׁשׁ־מֵאוֹתshesh-me/OTsix hundredאִישׁishmenחָגוּרcha/GURgirded withכְּלֵיke/LEweapons ofמִלְחָמָה׃mil/cha/MAwar

    And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.

    וַיַּעֲלוּvay/ya/a/LUand they went upוַיַּחֲנוּvay/ya/cha/NUand encampedבְּקִרְיַתbe/Kir/YATat Kiriath-יְעָרִיםye/a/RIMjearimבִּיהוּדָהbI/hu/DAin Judahעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeקָרְאוּka/re/Uthey calledלַמָּקוֹםlam/ma/KOMthe placeהַהוּאha/HUthatמַחֲנֵה־דָןMa/cha/NE-danMahaneh-danעַדadtoהַיּוֹםhay/YOMdayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisהִנֵּהhin/NEbehold it isאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REbehindקִרְיַתKir/YATKiriath-יְעָרִים׃ye/a/RIMjearim

    And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim.

    וַיַּעַבְרוּvay/ya/av/RUand they passed onמִשָּׁםmish/SHAMfrom thereהַר־אֶפְרָיִםhaR-ef/RA/yimto the hill country of Ephraimוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameעַד־בֵּיתad-betto the house ofמִיכָה׃Mi/KHAMicah

    And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

14. 14

    וַיַּעֲנוּvay/ya/a/NUthen answeredחֲמֵשֶׁתcha/ME/shetthe fiveהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menהַהֹלְכִיםha/hol/KHIMwho had goneלְרַגֵּלle/rag/GELto spy outאֶת־הָאָרֶץet-ha/A/retsthe landלַיִשׁLA/yishLaishוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֶל־אֲחֵיהֶםel-a/che/HEMto their brothersהַיְדַעְתֶּםhay/da/TEMdo you knowכִּיkithatיֵשׁyeshthere areבַּבָּתִּיםbab/bat/TIMin the housesהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseאֵפוֹדe/FODan ephodוּתְרָפִיםu/te/ra/FIMand teraphimוּפֶסֶלu/FE/seland a graven imageוּמַסֵּכָהu/mas/se/KHAand a molten imageוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowדְּעוּde/Uconsiderמַה־תַּעֲשׂוּ׃ma-ta/a/SUwhat you will do

    Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

    וַיָּסוּרוּvay/ya/SU/ruand they turned asideשָׁמָּהSHAM/mathereוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand cameאֶל־בֵּית־הַנַּעַרel-bet-han/NA/arto the house of the young manהַלֵּוִיhal/Le/VIthe Leviteבֵּיתbetat the house ofמִיכָהMi/KHAMicahוַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ־לוֹvay/yish/a/LU-loand asked himלְשָׁלוֹם׃le/sha/LOMof his welfare

    And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.

16. 16

    וְשֵׁשׁ־מֵאוֹתve/SHESH-me/OTand six hundredאִישׁishmenחֲגוּרִיםcha/gu/RIMgirded withכְּלֵיke/LEweapons ofמִלְחַמְתָּםmil/cham/TAMtheir warנִצָּבִיםnits/tsa/VIMstoodפֶּתַחPE/tachat the entrance ofהַשָּׁעַרhash/SHA/arthe gateאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereמִבְּנֵי־דָן׃mib/Be/NE-danof the children of Dan

    And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.

    וַיַּעֲלוּvay/ya/a/LUand went upחֲמֵשֶׁתcha/ME/shetthe fiveהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menהַהֹלְכִיםha/hol/KHIMwho had goneלְרַגֵּלle/rag/GELto spy outאֶת־הָאָרֶץet-ha/A/retsthe landבָּאוּBA/ucame inשָׁמָּהSHAM/mathereלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUtookאֶת־הַפֶּסֶלet-hap/PE/selthe graven imageוְאֶת־הָאֵפוֹדve/ET-ha/e/FODand the ephodוְאֶת־הַתְּרָפִיםve/ET-hat/te/ra/FIMand the teraphimוְאֶת־הַמַּסֵּכָהve/ET-ham/mas/se/KHAand the molten imageוְהַכֹּהֵןve/hak/ko/HENand the priestנִצָּבnits/TSAVstoodפֶּתַחPE/tachat the entrance ofהַשַּׁעַרhash/SHA/arthe gateוְשֵׁשׁ־מֵאוֹתve/SHESH-me/OTand six hundredהָאִישׁha/ISHmenהֶחָגוּרhe/cha/GURgirded withכְּלֵיke/LEweapons ofהַמִּלְחָמָה׃ham/mil/cha/MAwar

    And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.

    וְאֵלֶּהve/EL/leand when theseבָּאוּBA/uwent intoבֵּיתbetthe house ofמִיכָהMi/KHAMicahויִּקְחוּvyik/CHUand they tookאֶת־פֶּסֶלet-PE/selthe graven image ofהָאֵפוֹדha/e/FODthe ephodוְאֶת־הַתְּרָפִיםve/ET-hat/te/ra/FIMand the teraphimוְאֶת־הַמַּסֵּכָהve/ET-ham/mas/se/KHAand the molten imageוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestמָהmawhatאַתֶּםat/TEMyou areעֹשִׂים׃o/SIMdoing

    And these went into Micah's house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidלוֹloto himהַחֲרֵשׁha/cha/RESHbe silentשִׂים־יָדְךָsim-ya/de/KHAlay your handעַל־פִּיךָal-PI/khaupon your mouthוְלֵךְve/LEKHand goעִמָּנוּim/MA/nuwith usוֶהְיֵה־לָנוּveh/YE-LA/nuand be to usלְאָבle/AVa fatherוּלְכֹהֵןu/le/kho/HENand a priestהֲטוֹבha/TOVis it betterהֱיוֹתְךָhe/yot/KHAfor you to beכֹהֵןkho/HENa priestלְבֵיתle/VETto the house ofאִישׁisha manאֶחָדe/CHADoneאוֹoorהֱיוֹתְךָhe/yot/KHAfor you to beכֹהֵןkho/HENa priestלְשֵׁבֶטle/SHE/vetto a tribeוּלְמִשְׁפָּחָהu/le/mish/pa/CHAand a clanבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃be/Yis/ra/ELin Israel

    And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

    וַיִּיטַבvay/yi/TAVand was gladלֵבlevthe heart ofהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookאֶת־הָאֵפוֹדet-ha/e/FODthe ephodוְאֶת־הַתְּרָפִיםve/ET-hat/te/ra/FIMand the teraphimוְאֶת־הַפָּסֶלve/ET-hap/PA/seland the graven imageוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand wentבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revin the midst ofהָעָם׃ha/AMthe people

    And the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

    וַיִּפְנוּvay/yif/NUso they turnedוַיֵּלֵכוּvay/ye/LE/khuand departedוַיָּשִׂימוּvay/ya/SI/muand putאֶת־הַטַּףet-hat/TAFthe little onesוְאֶת־הַמִּקְנֶהve/ET-ham/mik/NEand the livestockוְאֶת־הַכְּבוּדָּהve/ET-hak/ke/vud/DAand the goodsלִפְנֵיהֶם׃lif/ne/HEMbefore them

    So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.

    הֵמָּהHEM/mawhen theyהִרְחִיקוּhir/CHI/kuhad gone farמִבֵּיתmib/BETfrom the house ofמִיכָהMi/KHAMicahוְהָאֲנָשִׁיםve/ha/a/na/SHIMand the menאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wereבַּבָּתִּיםbab/bat/TIMin the housesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wereעִם־בֵּיתim-betnear the house ofמִיכָהMi/KHAMicahנִזְעֲקוּniz/a/KUwere gathered togetherוַיַּדְבִּיקוּvay/yad/BI/kuand overtookאֶת־בְּנֵי־דָן׃et-Be/NE-danthe children of Dan

    And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

    וַיִּקְרְאוּvay/yik/re/Uand they criedאֶל־בְּנֵי־דָןel-Be/NE-danto the children of Danוַיַּסֵּבּוּvay/yas/SEB/buand they turnedפְּנֵיהֶםpe/ne/HEMtheir facesוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidלְמִיכָהle/Mi/KHAto Micahמַה־לְּךָma-le/KHAwhat ails youכִּיkithatנִזְעָקְתָּ׃niz/AK/tayou have gathered together

    And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֶת־אֱלֹהַיet-e/lo/HAYmy godsאֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂיתִיa/SHER-a/SI/tiwhich I madeלְקַחְתֶּםle/kach/TEMyou have takenוְאֶת־הַכֹּהֵןve/ET-hak/ko/HENand the priestוַתֵּלְכוּvat/tel/KHUand you have gone awayוּמַה־לִּיu/MA-liand what have Iעוֹדodmoreוּמַה־זֶּהu/MA-zeand how is thisתֹּאמְרוּto/me/RUyou sayאֵלַיe/LAYto meמַה־לָּךְ׃ma-lakhwhat ails you

    And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himבְּנֵי־דָןbe/NE-danthe children of Danאַל־תַּשְׁמַעal-tash/MAlet not be heardקוֹלְךָkol/KHAyour voiceעִמָּנוּim/MA/nuwith usפֶּן־יִפְגְּעוּpen-yif/ge/Ulest fall uponבָכֶםva/KHEMyouאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenמָרֵיMA/rebitter ofנֶפֶשׁNE/feshsoulוְאָסַפְתָּהve/a/saf/TAand you loseנַפְשְׁךָnaf/she/KHAyour lifeוְנֶפֶשׁve/NE/feshand the lives ofבֵּיתֶךָ׃be/TE/khayour household

    And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.

    וַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand they wentבְנֵי־דָןve/NE-danthe children of Danלְדַרְכָּםle/dar/KAMon their wayוַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawמִיכָהMi/KHAMicahכִּי־חֲזָקִיםki-cha/za/KIMthat too strongהֵמָּהHEM/mathey wereמִמֶּנּוּmim/MEN/nufor himוַיִּפֶןvay/YI/fenhe turnedוַיָּשׇׁבvay/YA/shovand went backאֶל־בֵּיתוֹ׃el-be/TOto his house

    And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

    וְהֵמָּהve/HEM/maand theyלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUtookאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂהet-a/SHER-a/SAwhat had madeמִיכָהMi/KHAMicahוְאֶת־הַכֹּהֵןve/ET-hak/ko/HENand the priestאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהָיָה־לוֹha/YA-lohe hadוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand cameעַל־לַיִשׁal-LA/yishupon Laishעַל־עַםal-amto a peopleשֹׁקֵטsho/KETquietוּבֹטֵחַu/vo/TE/achand secureוַיַּכּוּvay/yak/KUand they struckאוֹתָםo/TAMthemלְפִי־חָרֶבle/FI-CHA/revby the edge of the swordוְאֶת־הָעִירve/ET-ha/IRand the cityשָׂרְפוּsa/re/FUthey burnedבָאֵשׁ׃va/ESHwith fire

    And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.

    וְאֵיןve/ENand there was noמַצִּילmats/TSILdelivererכִּיkibecauseרְחוֹקָה־הִיאre/cho/KA-hiit was farמִצִּידוֹןmits/Tsi/DONfrom Zidonוְדָבָרve/da/VARand dealingsאֵין־לָהֶםen-la/HEMthey had noעִם־אָדָםim-a/DAMwith anyoneוְהִיאve/HIand it wasבָּעֵמֶקba/E/mekin the valleyאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat isלְבֵית־רְחוֹבle/VET-re/CHOVby Beth-rehobוַיִּבְנוּvay/yiv/NUand they builtאֶת־הָעִירet-ha/IRthe cityוַיֵּשְׁבוּvay/yesh/VUand dweltבָהּ׃vain it

    And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.

29. 29

    וַיִּקְרְאוּvay/yik/re/Uand they calledשֵׁם־הָעִירshem-ha/IRthe name of the cityדָּןDanDanבְּשֵׁםbe/SHEMafter the name ofדָּןDanDanאֲבִיהֶםa/vi/HEMtheir fatherאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoיוּלַּדyul/LADwas bornלְיִשְׂרָאֵלle/Yis/ra/ELto Israelוְאוּלָםve/u/LAMhoweverלַיִשׁLA/yishLaishשֵׁם־הָעִירshem-ha/IRwas the name of the cityלָרִאשֹׁנָה׃la/ri/sho/NAat the first

    And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

30. 30

    וַיָּקִימוּvay/ya/KI/muand set upלָהֶםla/HEMfor themselvesבְּנֵי־דָןbe/NE-danthe children of Danאֶת־הַפָּסֶלet-hap/PA/selthe graven imageוִיהוֹנָתָןVi/ho/na/TANand Jonathanבֶּן־גֵּרְשֹׁםben-Ger/SHOMthe son of Gershomבֶּן־מְנַשֶּׁהben-Me/nash/SHEthe son of Manassehהוּאhuheוּבָנָיוu/va/NAYVand his sonsהָיוּha/YUwereכֹהֲנִיםkho/ha/NIMpriestsלְשֵׁבֶטle/SHE/vetto the tribe ofהַדָּנִיhad/Da/NIthe Danitesעַד־יוֹםad-yomuntil the day ofגְּלוֹתge/LOTthe captivity ofהָאָרֶץ׃ha/A/retsthe land

    And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.

31. 31

    וַיָּשִׂימוּvay/ya/SI/muand they set upלָהֶםla/HEMfor themselvesאֶת־פֶּסֶלet-PE/selthe graven image ofמִיכָהMi/KHAMicahאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעָשָׂהa/SAhe madeכׇּל־יְמֵיkol-ye/MEall the days thatהֱיוֹתhe/YOTwasבֵּית־הָאֱלֹהִיםbet-ha/e/lo/HIMthe house of Godבְּשִׁלֹה׃be/Shi/LOin Shiloh

    And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
