   And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

   וַיִּתְקַבְּצוּvay/yit/kab/be/TSUthat they gatheredיַחְדָּוyach/DAVtogetherלְהִלָּחֵםle/hil/la/CHEMto fightעִם־יְהוֹשֻׁעַim-Ye/ho/SHU/awith Joshuaוְעִם־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/IM-yis/ra/ELand with Israelפֶּהpewith mouthאֶחָד׃e/CHADone

   That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

   וְיֹשְׁבֵיve/yosh/VEand the inhabitants ofגִבְעוֹןGiv/ONGibeonשָׁמְעוּsha/me/Uheardאֵת־אֲשֶׁרet-a/SHERwhatעָשָׂהa/SAdidיְהוֹשֻׁעַYe/ho/SHU/aJoshuaלִירִיחוֹlI/ri/CHOto Jerichoוְלָעָי׃ve/La/AYand to Ai

   And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

   וַיַּעֲשׂוּvay/ya/a/SUthey workedגַם־הֵמָּהgam-HEM/mathey alsoבְּעׇרְמָהbe/or/MAcraftilyוַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand they wentוַיִּצְטַיָּרוּvay/yits/tay/YA/ruand acted as envoysוַיִּקְחוּvay/yik/CHUand they tookשַׂקִּיםsak/KIMsacksבָּלִיםba/LIMoldלַחֲמוֹרֵיהֶםla/cha/mo/re/HEMfor their donkeysוְנֹאדוֹתve/no/DOTand skins ofיַיִןYA/yinwineבָּלִיםba/LIMoldוּמְבֻקָּעִיםu/me/vuk/ka/IMand tornוּמְצֹרָרִים׃u/me/tso/ra/RIMand bound up

   They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

   וּנְעָלוֹתu/ne/a/LOTand sandalsבָּלוֹתba/LOToldוּמְטֻלָּאוֹתu/me/tul/la/OTand patchedבְּרַגְלֵיהֶםbe/rag/le/HEMon their feetוּשְׂלָמוֹתu/se/la/MOTand garmentsבָּלוֹתba/LOToldעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMon themוְכֹלve/KHOLand allלֶחֶםLE/chemthe bread ofצֵידָםtse/DAMtheir provisionיָבֵשׁya/VESHdryהָיָהha/YAwasנִקֻּדִים׃nik/ku/DIMmoldy

   And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

   וַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand they wentאֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁעַel-Ye/ho/SHU/ato Joshuaאֶל־הַמַּחֲנֶהel-ham/ma/cha/NEto the campהַגִּלְגָּלhag/Gil/GALat Gilgalוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himוְאֶל־אִישׁve/EL-ishand to the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelמֵאֶרֶץme/E/retsfrom a landרְחוֹקָהre/cho/KAfarבָּאנוּBA/nuwe have comeוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowכִּרְתוּ־לָנוּkir/TU-LA/numake with usבְרִית׃ve/RITa covenant

   And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

   (ויאמרו)vaymarav[וַיֹּאמֶר]vay/YO/merand saidאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלish-Yis/ra/ELthe men of Israelאֶל־הַחִוִּיel-Ha/chiv/VIto the Hivitesאוּלַיu/LAYperhapsבְּקִרְבִּיbe/kir/BIamong usאַתָּהat/TAyouיוֹשֵׁבyo/SHEVdwellוְאֵיךְve/EKHand how(אכרות)kharavat[אֶכְרׇת־]לְךָekh/ROT-le/KHAcan we make with youבְרִית׃ve/RITa covenant

   And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?

8. 8

   וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁעַel-Ye/ho/SHU/ato Joshuaעֲבָדֶיךָa/va/DE/khayour servantsאֲנָחְנוּa/NACH/nuwe areוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themיְהוֹשֻׁעַYe/ho/SHU/aJoshuaמִיmiwhoאַתֶּםat/TEMare youוּמֵאַיִןu/me/A/yinand from whereתָּבֹאוּ׃ta/VO/udo you come

   And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

   וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himמֵאֶרֶץme/E/retsfrom a landרְחוֹקָהre/cho/KAfarמְאֹדme/ODveryבָּאוּBA/uhave comeעֲבָדֶיךָa/va/DE/khayour servantsלְשֵׁםle/SHEMbecause of the name ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָe/lo/HE/khayour Godכִּי־שָׁמַעְנוּki-sha/MA/nufor we have heardשׇׁמְעוֹshom/OHis fameוְאֵתve/ETandכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרkol-a/SHERall thatעָשָׂהa/SAHe didבְּמִצְרָיִם׃be/Mits/RA/yimin Egypt

   And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

    וְאֵתve/ETandכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרkol-a/SHERall thatעָשָׂהa/SAHe didלִשְׁנֵיlish/NEto the twoמַלְכֵיmal/KHEkings ofהָאֱמֹרִיha/E/mo/RIof the Amoritesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereבְּעֵבֶרbe/E/verbeyondהַיַּרְדֵּןhay/Yar/DENthe Jordanלְסִיחוֹןle/Si/CHONto SihonמֶלֶךְME/lekhthe king ofחֶשְׁבּוֹןChesh/BONHeshbonוּלְעוֹגu/Le/OGand to Ogמֶלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁןME/lekh-Hab/ba/SHANthe king of Bashanאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wasבְּעַשְׁתָּרוֹת׃be/Ash/ta/ROTat Ashtaroth

    And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuto usזְקֵינֵינוּze/ke/ne/NUour eldersוְכׇל־יֹשְׁבֵיve/KHOL-yosh/VEand all the inhabitants ofאַרְצֵנוּar/TSE/nuour landלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingקְחוּke/CHUtakeבְיֶדְכֶםve/yed/KHEMwith youצֵידָהtse/DAprovisionsלַדֶּרֶךְlad/DE/rekhfor the journeyוּלְכוּu/le/KHUand goלִקְרָאתָםlik/ra/TAMto meet themוַאֲמַרְתֶּםva/a/mar/TEMand sayאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themעַבְדֵיכֶםav/de/KHEMyour servantsאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuwe areוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowכִּרְתוּ־לָנוּkir/TU-LA/numake with usבְרִית׃ve/RITa covenant

    Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

12. 12

    זֶהzethisלַחְמֵנוּlach/ME/nuour breadחָםchamhotהִצְטַיַּדְנוּhits/tay/YAD/nuwe took as provisionאֹתוֹo/TOitמִבָּתֵּינוּmib/bat/TE/nufrom our housesבְּיוֹםbe/YOMon the dayצֵאתֵנוּtse/TE/nuwe came outלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto comeאֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMto youוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdיָבֵשׁya/VESHit is dryוְהָיָהve/ha/YAand has becomeנִקֻּדִים׃nik/ku/DIMmoldy

    This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

13. 13

    וְאֵלֶּהve/EL/leand theseנֹאדוֹתno/DOTthe skins ofהַיַּיִןhay/YA/yinwineאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichמִלֵּאנוּmil/LE/nuwe filledחֲדָשִׁיםcha/da/SHIMwere newוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdהִתְבַּקָּעוּhit/bak/KA/uthey are tornוְאֵלֶּהve/EL/leand theseשַׂלְמוֹתֵינוּsal/mo/TE/nuour garmentsוּנְעָלֵינוּu/ne/a/LE/nuand our sandalsבָּלוּba/LUare worn outמֵרֹבme/ROVbecause of the length ofהַדֶּרֶךְhad/DE/rekhthe journeyמְאֹד׃me/ODvery

    And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

14. 14

    וַיִּקְחוּvay/yik/CHUand tookהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menמִצֵּידָםmits/tse/DAMof their provisionsוְאֶת־פִּיve/ET-pibut the mouth ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDלֹאlonotשָׁאָלוּ׃sha/A/luthey asked

    And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

15. 15

    וַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand madeלָהֶםla/HEMwith themיְהוֹשֻׁעַYe/ho/SHU/aJoshuaשָׁלוֹםsha/LOMpeaceוַיִּכְרֹתvay/yikh/ROTand madeלָהֶםla/HEMwith themבְּרִיתbe/RITa covenantלְחַיּוֹתָםle/chay/yo/TAMto let them liveוַיִּשָּׁבְעוּvay/yish/sha/ve/Uand they sworeלָהֶםla/HEMto themנְשִׂיאֵיne/si/Ethe leaders ofהָעֵדָה׃ha/e/DAthe congregation

    And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

16. 16

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passמִקְצֵהmik/TSEat the end ofשְׁלֹשֶׁתshe/LO/shetthreeיָמִיםya/MIMdaysאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאֲשֶׁר־כָּרְתוּa/SHER-ka/re/TUthey had madeלָהֶםla/HEMwith themבְּרִיתbe/RITa covenantוַיִּשְׁמְעוּvay/yish/me/Uand they heardכִּי־קְרֹבִיםki-ke/ro/VIMthat neighborsהֵםhemthey wereאֵלָיוe/LAYVto themוּבְקִרְבּוֹu/ve/kir/BOand among themהֵםhemtheyיֹשְׁבִים׃yosh/VIMdwelt

    And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

17. 17

    וַיִּסְעוּvay/yis/Uand they set outבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameאֶל־עָרֵיהֶםel-a/re/HEMto their citiesבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַשְּׁלִישִׁיhash/she/li/SHIthe thirdוְעָרֵיהֶםve/a/re/HEMnow their cities wereגִּבְעוֹןGiv/ONGibeonוְהַכְּפִירָהve/hak/Ke/fi/RAand Chephirahוּבְאֵרוֹתu/ve/E/ROTand Beerothוְקִרְיַתve/Kir/YATand Kiriath-יְעָרִים׃ye/a/RIMjearim

    And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.

18. 18

    וְלֹאve/LOand notהִכּוּםhik/KUMthey struck themבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelכִּי־נִשְׁבְּעוּki-nish/be/Ubecause had swornלָהֶםla/HEMto themנְשִׂיאֵיne/si/Ethe leaders ofהָעֵדָהha/e/DAthe congregationבַּיהֹוָהba-Adonaiby the LORDאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיִּלֹּנוּvay/yil/LO/nuand they murmuredכׇל־הָעֵדָהkhol-ha/e/DAall the congregationעַל־הַנְּשִׂיאִים׃al-han/ne/si/IMagainst the leaders

    And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

19. 19

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidכׇל־הַנְּשִׂיאִיםkhol-han/ne/si/IMall the leadersאֶל־כׇּל־הָעֵדָהel-kol-ha/e/DAto all the congregationאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweנִשְׁבַּעְנוּnish/BA/nuwe sworeלָהֶםla/HEMto themבַּיהֹוָהba-Adonaiby the LORDאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowלֹאlonotנוּכַלnu/KHALmay weלִנְגֹּעַlin/GO/atouchבָּהֶם׃ba/HEMthem

    But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

20. 20

    זֹאתzotthisנַעֲשֶׂהna/a/SEwe will doלָהֶםla/HEMto themוְהַחֲיֵהve/ha/cha/YElet liveאוֹתָםo/TAMthemוְלֹא־יִהְיֶהve/LO-yih/YElest there beעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuupon usקֶצֶףKE/tsefwrathעַל־הַשְּׁבוּעָהal-hash/she/vu/Abecause of the oathאֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁבַּעְנוּa/SHER-nish/BA/nuthat we sworeלָהֶם׃la/HEMto them

    This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

21. 21

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themהַנְּשִׂיאִיםhan/ne/si/IMthe leadersיִחְיוּyich/YUlet them liveוַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand they becameחֹטְבֵיchot/VEhewers ofעֵצִיםe/TSIMwoodוְשֹׁאֲבֵי־מַיִםve/SHO/a/ve-MA/yimand drawers of waterלְכׇל־הָעֵדָהle/KHOL-ha/e/DAto all the congregationכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasדִּבְּרוּdib/be/RUhad saidלָהֶםla/HEMto themהַנְּשִׂיאִים׃han/ne/si/IMthe leaders

    And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

22. 22

    וַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand calledלָהֶםla/HEMfor themיְהוֹשֻׁעַYe/ho/SHU/aJoshuaוַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingלָמָּהLAM/mawhyרִמִּיתֶםrim/mi/TEMhave you deceivedאֹתָנוּo/TA/nuusלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingרְחוֹקִיםre/cho/KIMfarאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuwe areמִכֶּםmik/KEMfrom youמְאֹדme/ODveryוְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMand youבְּקִרְבֵּנוּbe/kir/BE/nuamong usיֹשְׁבִים׃yosh/VIMdwell

    And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

23. 23

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאֲרוּרִיםa/ru/RIMcursedאַתֶּםat/TEMare youוְלֹא־יִכָּרֵתve/LO-yik/ka/RETand shall not be cut offמִכֶּםmik/KEMof youעֶבֶדE/vedservantsוְחֹטְבֵיve/chot/VEand hewers ofעֵצִיםe/TSIMwoodוְשֹׁאֲבֵיve/SHO/a/veand drawers ofמַיִםMA/yimwaterלְבֵיתle/VETfor the house ofאֱלֹהָי׃e/lo/HAYmy God

    Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

    וַיַּעֲנוּvay/ya/a/NUand they answeredאֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁעַet-Ye/ho/SHU/aJoshuaוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidכִּיkibecauseהֻגֵּדhug/GEDtoldהֻגַּדhug/GADit was toldלַעֲבָדֶיךָla/a/va/DE/khato your servantsאֵת־אֲשֶׁרet-a/SHERhowצִוָּהtsiv/VAcommandedיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָe/lo/HE/khayour Godאֶת־מֹשֶׁהet-Mo/SHEMosesעַבְדּוֹav/DOHis servantלָתֵתla/TETto giveלָכֶםla/KHEMto youאֶת־כׇּל־הָאָרֶץet-kol-ha/A/retsall the landוּלְהַשְׁמִידu/le/hash/MIDand to destroyאֶת־כׇּל־יֹשְׁבֵיet-kol-yosh/VEall inhabitants ofהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landמִפְּנֵיכֶםmip/pe/ne/KHEMfrom before youוַנִּירָאvan/ni/RAso we fearedמְאֹדme/ODveryלְנַפְשֹׁתֵינוּle/naf/sho/TE/nufor our livesמִפְּנֵיכֶםmip/pe/ne/KHEMbecause of youוַנַּעֲשֵׂהvan/na/a/SEand have doneאֶת־הַדָּבָרet-had/da/VARthe thingהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25. 25

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהִנְנוּhin/NUhere we areבְיָדֶךָve/ya/DE/khain your handכַּטּוֹבkat/TOVas it seems goodוְכַיָּשָׁרve/khay/ya/SHARand rightבְּעֵינֶיךָbe/e/NE/khain your eyesלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doלָנוּLA/nuto usעֲשֵׂה׃a/SEdo

    And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

26. 26

    וַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand he didלָהֶםla/HEMto themכֵּןkensoוַיַּצֵּלvay/yats/TSELand he deliveredאוֹתָםo/TAMthemמִיַּדmiy/YADout of the hand ofבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלbe/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelוְלֹאve/LOand notהֲרָגוּם׃ha/ra/GUMthey killed them

    And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

27. 27

    וַיִּתְּנֵםvay/yit/te/NEMand made themיְהוֹשֻׁעַYe/ho/SHU/aJoshuaבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatחֹטְבֵיchot/VEhewers ofעֵצִיםe/TSIMwoodוְשֹׁאֲבֵיve/SHO/a/veand drawers ofמַיִםMA/yimwaterלָעֵדָהla/e/DAto the congregationוּלְמִזְבַּחu/le/miz/BACHand for the altar ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDעַד־הַיּוֹםad-hay/YOMto the dayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisאֶל־הַמָּקוֹםel-ham/ma/KOMin the placeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיִבְחָר׃yiv/CHARHe would choose

    And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
