    וַיִּמְעֲלוּand they acted unfaithfullyבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelמַעַלunfaithfulnessבַּחֵרֶםin the devoted thingוַיִּקַּחand tookעָכָןAchanבֶּן־כַּרְמִיson of Carmiבֶן־זַבְדִּיson of Zabdiבֶן־זֶרַחson of Zerahלְמַטֵּהof the tribe ofיְהוּדָהJudahמִן־הַחֵרֶםfrom the devoted thingוַיִּחַר־אַףand was kindled the anger ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDבִּבְנֵיamong sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.

    וַיִּשְׁלַחand sentיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaאֲנָשִׁיםmenמִירִיחוֹfrom JerichoהָעַיAiאֲשֶׁרwhichעִם־בֵּיתbeside Beth-אָוֶןavenמִקֶּדֶםon the east ofלְבֵית־אֵלBeth-elוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםto themלֵאמֹרsayingעֲלוּgo upוְרַגְּלוּand spy outאֶת־הָאָרֶץthe landוַיַּעֲלוּand ascendedהָאֲנָשִׁיםthe menוַיְרַגְּלוּand they spied outאֶת־הָעָי׃Ai

    And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.

    וַיָּשֻׁבוּand they returnedאֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁעַto Joshuaוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidאֵלָיוto himאַל־יַעַלlet not go upכׇּל־הָעָםall the peopleכְּאַלְפַּיִםabout two thousandאִישׁmenאוֹorכִּשְׁלֹשֶׁתas threeאֲלָפִיםthousandאִישׁmenיַעֲלוּthey go upוְיַכּוּand smiteאֶת־הָעָיAiאַל־תְּיַגַּע־שָׁמָּהdo not weary thereאֶת־כׇּל־הָעָםall the peopleכִּיforמְעַטfewהֵמָּה׃they are

    And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.

    וַיַּעֲלוּand they ascendedמִן־הָעָםfrom the peopleשָׁמָּהthereכִּשְׁלֹשֶׁתas threeאֲלָפִיםthousandאִישׁmenוַיָּנֻסוּand they fledלִפְנֵיbeforeאַנְשֵׁיthe men ofהָעָי׃Ai

    So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

    וַיַּכּוּand they struckמֵהֶםof themאַנְשֵׁיthe men ofהָעַיAiכִּשְׁלֹשִׁיםabout thirtyוְשִׁשָּׁהand sixאִישׁmenוַיִּרְדְּפוּםand they pursued themלִפְנֵיbeforeהַשַּׁעַרthe gateעַד־הַשְּׁבָרִיםuntil Shebarimוַיַּכּוּםand they smote themבַּמּוֹרָדon the descentוַיִּמַּסand it meltedלְבַב־הָעָםhearts of the peopleוַיְהִיand becameלְמָיִם׃as water

    And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

    וַיִּקְרַעand toreיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaשִׂמְלֹתָיוhis clothesוַיִּפֹּלand fellעַל־פָּנָיוupon his faceאַרְצָהto the earthלִפְנֵיbeforeאֲרוֹןthe ark ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDעַד־הָעֶרֶבuntil the eveningהוּאheוְזִקְנֵיand the elders ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיַּעֲלוּand they putעָפָרdustעַל־רֹאשָׁם׃upon their heads

    And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaאֲהָהּalas!אֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODלָמָהwhyהֵעֲבַרְתָּhave you brought overהַעֲבִירat allאֶת־הָעָםthe peopleהַזֶּהthisאֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּןthe Jordanלָתֵתto giveאֹתָנוּusבְּיַדin the hand ofהָאֱמֹרִיthe Amoriteלְהַאֲבִידֵנוּto destroy usוְלוּwould thatהוֹאַלְנוּwe had been contentוַנֵּשֶׁבand we dweltבְּעֵבֶרbeyondהַיַּרְדֵּן׃the Jordan

    And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!

    בִּיOאֲדֹנָיLordמָהwhatאֹמַרshall I sayאַחֲרֵיafterאֲשֶׁרwhichהָפַךְhas turnedיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelעֹרֶףthe neckלִפְנֵיbeforeאֹיְבָיו׃its enemies

    O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!

  9. 9

    וְיִשְׁמְעוּand hearהַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Canaaniteוְכֹלand allיֹשְׁבֵיinhabitants ofהָאָרֶץthe landוְנָסַבּוּand shall compassעָלֵינוּover usוְהִכְרִיתוּand they will cut offאֶת־שְׁמֵנוּour nameמִן־הָאָרֶץfrom the landוּמַה־תַּעֲשֵׂהand what will you doלְשִׁמְךָfor your nameהַגָּדוֹל׃the great

    For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁעַto Joshuaקֻםget upלָךְyourselfלָמָּהwhyזֶּהthisאַתָּהyouנֹפֵלfallingעַל־פָּנֶיךָ׃upon your face

    And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

  11. 11

    חָטָאhas sinnedיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְגַםand alsoעָבְרוּpassedאֶת־בְּרִיתִיmy covenantאֲשֶׁרwhichצִוִּיתִיI commandedאוֹתָםthemוְגַםand alsoלָקְחוּthey tookמִן־הַחֵרֶםfrom the devoted thingוְגַםand alsoגָּנְבוּstoleוְגַםand alsoכִּחֲשׁוּthey liedוְגַםand alsoשָׂמוּthey putבִכְלֵיהֶם׃among their own stuff

    Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

    וְלֹאand notיֻכְלוּthey were ableבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלָקוּםto rise upלִפְנֵיbeforeאֹיְבֵיהֶםtheir enemiesעֹרֶףthe neckיִפְנוּthey shall turnלִפְנֵיbeforeאֹיְבֵיהֶםtheir enemiesכִּיbecauseהָיוּthey areלְחֵרֶםaccursedלֹאnotאוֹסִיףI will be againלִהְיוֹתto beעִמָּכֶםwith youאִם־לֹאif notתַשְׁמִידוּyou will destroyהַחֵרֶםthe devoted thingמִקִּרְבְּכֶם׃from among you

    Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

    קֻםstand upקַדֵּשׁconsecrateאֶת־הָעָםthe peopleוְאָמַרְתָּand sayהִתְקַדְּשׁוּsanctify yourselvesלְמָחָרon the morrowכִּיbecauseכֹהthusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelחֵרֶםa devoted thingבְּקִרְבְּךָin your midstיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלֹאnotתוּכַלcanלָקוּםto rise upלִפְנֵיbeforeאֹיְבֶיךָyour enemiesעַד־הֲסִירְכֶםuntil you removeהַחֵרֶםthe devoted thingמִקִּרְבְּכֶם׃from among you

    Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

    וְנִקְרַבְתֶּםand you will bring yourselves nearבַּבֹּקֶרin the morningלְשִׁבְטֵיכֶםto your tribesוְהָיָהand beהַשֵּׁבֶטthe tribeאֲשֶׁר־יִלְכְּדֶנּוּwhich takes itיְהֹוָהthe LORDיִקְרַבwill draw nearלַמִּשְׁפָּחוֹתto the familiesוְהַמִּשְׁפָּחָהand the familyאֲשֶׁר־יִלְכְּדֶנָּהwhich takes itיְהֹוָהthe LORDתִּקְרַבshall draw nearלַבָּתִּיםto the householdsוְהַבַּיִתand the houseאֲשֶׁרwhichיִלְכְּדֶנּוּtakes itיְהֹוָהthe LORDיִקְרַבwill draw nearלַגְּבָרִים׃to the men

    In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.

    וְהָיָהand beהַנִּלְכָּדhe that is takenבַּחֵרֶםwith the devoted thingיִשָּׂרֵףit will be burnedבָּאֵשׁby fireאֹתוֹhimוְאֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹand all that was hisכִּיbecauseעָבַרpassedאֶת־בְּרִיתcovenant ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוְכִי־עָשָׂהand because he has wroughtנְבָלָהfollyבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃in Israel

    And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

    וַיַּשְׁכֵּםand rose earlyיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaבַּבֹּקֶרin the morningוַיַּקְרֵבand he presentedאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלִשְׁבָטָיוto its tribesוַיִּלָּכֵדand it was taken by lotשֵׁבֶטtribe ofיְהוּדָה׃Judah

    So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

    וַיַּקְרֵבand he presentedאֶת־מִשְׁפַּחַתfamily ofיְהוּדָהJudahוַיִּלְכֹּדand he tookאֵת־מִשְׁפַּחַתfamily ofהַזַּרְחִיthe Zarhitesוַיַּקְרֵבand he presentedאֶת־מִשְׁפַּחַתfamily ofהַזַּרְחִיthe Zarhitesלַגְּבָרִיםto the menוַיִּלָּכֵדand it was taken by lotזַבְדִּי׃Zabdi

    And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

  18. 18

    וַיַּקְרֵבand he presentedאֶת־בֵּיתוֹhis householdלַגְּבָרִיםto the menוַיִּלָּכֵדand it was taken by lotעָכָןAchanבֶּן־כַּרְמִיson of Carmiבֶן־זַבְדִּיson of Zabdiבֶּן־זֶרַחson of Zerahלְמַטֵּהof the tribe ofיְהוּדָה׃Judah

    And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaאֶל־עָכָןto Achanבְּנִיmy sonשִׂים־נָאput I prayכָבוֹדgloryלַיהֹוָהto the LORDאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְתֶן־לוֹand give himתוֹדָהconfessionוְהַגֶּד־נָאand tell I prayלִיto meמֶהwhatעָשִׂיתָyou didאַל־תְּכַחֵדdo not hide itמִמֶּנִּי׃from me

    And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

  20. 20

    וַיַּעַןand he answeredעָכָןAchanאֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaוַיֹּאמַרand saidאׇמְנָהsurelyאָנֹכִיIחָטָאתִיhave sinnedלַיהֹוָהto the LORDאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְכָזֹאתand as thisוְכָזֹאתand as thisעָשִׂיתִי׃I did

    And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

  21. 21

    (ואראה)[וָאֵרֶא]and I sawבַשָּׁלָלamong the bootyאַדֶּרֶתcloak ofשִׁנְעָרShinarאַחַתoneטוֹבָהgoodוּמָאתַיִםand two hundredשְׁקָלִיםshekelsכֶּסֶףsilverוּלְשׁוֹןand a wedge ofזָהָבgoldאֶחָדoneחֲמִשִּׁיםfiftyשְׁקָלִיםshekelsמִשְׁקָלוֹits weightוָאֶחְמְדֵםand I desired themוָאֶקָּחֵםand I took themוְהִנָּםand behold theyטְמוּנִיםare hiddenבָּאָרֶץin the groundבְּתוֹךְin the midst ofהָאׇהֳלִיmy tentוְהַכֶּסֶףand the silverתַּחְתֶּיהָ׃in its place

    When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

  22. 22

    וַיִּשְׁלַחand sentיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaמַלְאָכִיםmessengersוַיָּרֻצוּand they ranהָאֹהֱלָהto the tentוְהִנֵּהand beholdטְמוּנָהit was hiddenבְּאׇהֳלוֹin his tentוְהַכֶּסֶףand the silverתַּחְתֶּיהָ׃in its place

    So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

  23. 23

    וַיִּקָּחוּםand they took themמִתּוֹךְfrom the midst ofהָאֹהֶלthe tentוַיְבִאוּםand they brought themאֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁעַto Joshuaוְאֶלandכׇּל־בְּנֵיall sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיַּצִּקֻםand laid them outלִפְנֵיbeforeיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

    And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.

    וַיִּקַּחand tookיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaאֶת־עָכָןAchanבֶּן־זֶרַחson of Zerahוְאֶת־הַכֶּסֶףand the silverוְאֶת־הָאַדֶּרֶתand the cloakוְאֶת־לְשׁוֹןand the wedge ofהַזָּהָבthe goldוְאֶת־בָּנָיוand his sonsוְאֶת־בְּנֹתָיוand his daughtersוְאֶת־שׁוֹרוֹand his oxוְאֶת־חֲמֹרוֹand his donkeyוְאֶת־צֹאנוֹand his flockוְאֶת־אׇהֳלוֹand his tentוְאֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹand all that was hisוְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלand all Israelעִמּוֹwith himוַיַּעֲלוּand they brought upאֹתָםthemעֵמֶקto the valley ofעָכוֹר׃Achor

    And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

  25. 25

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaמֶהwhatעֲכַרְתָּנוּhave you brought trouble to usיַעְכׇּרְךָwill bring trouble to youיְהֹוָהthe LORDבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַזֶּהthisוַיִּרְגְּמוּand they stonedאֹתוֹhimכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלall Israelאֶבֶןwith stonesוַיִּשְׂרְפוּand they burnedאֹתָםthemבָּאֵשׁby fireוַיִּסְקְלוּand they stonedאֹתָםthemבָּאֲבָנִים׃with stones

    And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

  26. 26

    וַיָּקִימוּand they raisedעָלָיוupon himגַּל־אֲבָנִיםa heap of stonesגָּדוֹלgreatעַדuntilהַיּוֹםthe dayהַזֶּהthisוַיָּשׇׁבand returnedיְהֹוָהthe LORDמֵחֲרוֹןfrom the burning ofאַפּוֹhis angerעַל־כֵּןthereforeקָרָאcalledשֵׁםthe name ofהַמָּקוֹםthe placeהַהוּאthatעֵמֶקthe valley ofעָכוֹרAchorעַדuntilהַיּוֹםthe dayהַזֶּה׃this

    And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
