   And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.

   And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.

   So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

   And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

   And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.

   And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!

   בִּיbiOאֲדֹנָיa/do/NAYLordמָהmawhatאֹמַרo/MARshall I sayאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהָפַךְha/FAKHhas turnedיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelעֹרֶףO/refthe backלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאֹיְבָיו׃oy/VAYVhis enemies

   O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!

9. 9

   וְיִשְׁמְעוּve/yish/me/Ufor will hear of itהַכְּנַעֲנִיhak/Ke/na/a/NIthe Canaanitesוְכֹלve/KHOLand allיֹשְׁבֵיyosh/VEthe inhabitants ofהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landוְנָסַבּוּve/na/SAB/buand shall surroundעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuusוְהִכְרִיתוּve/hikh/RI/tuand they will cut offאֶת־שְׁמֵנוּet-she/ME/nuour nameמִן־הָאָרֶץmin-ha/A/retsfrom the landוּמַה־תַּעֲשֵׂהu/MA-ta/a/SEand what will You doלְשִׁמְךָle/shim/KHAfor Your nameהַגָּדוֹל׃hag/ga/DOLgreat

   For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁעַel-Ye/ho/SHU/ato Joshuaקֻםkumget upלָךְlakhyourselfלָמָּהLAM/mawhyזֶּהzeis thisאַתָּהat/TAyouנֹפֵלno/FELlieעַל־פָּנֶיךָ׃al-pa/NE/khaon your face

    And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

11. 11

    חָטָאcha/TAhas sinnedיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוְגַםve/GAMand alsoעָבְרוּa/ve/RUthey have transgressedאֶת־בְּרִיתִיet-be/ri/TIMy covenantאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichצִוִּיתִיtsiv/VI/tiI commandedאוֹתָםo/TAMthemוְגַםve/GAMand alsoלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUthey tookמִן־הַחֵרֶםmin-ha/CHE/remfrom the devoted thingוְגַםve/GAMand alsoגָּנְבוּga/ne/VUhave stolenוְגַםve/GAMand alsoכִּחֲשׁוּki/cha/SHUhave deceivedוְגַםve/GAMand alsoשָׂמוּSA/muhave put itבִכְלֵיהֶם׃vikh/le/HEMamong their own stuff

    Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

    וְלֹאve/LOtherefore notיֻכְלוּyukh/LUcouldבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelלָקוּםla/KUMstandלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאֹיְבֵיהֶםoy/ve/HEMtheir enemiesעֹרֶףO/refbacksיִפְנוּyif/NUthey turnלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאֹיְבֵיהֶםoy/ve/HEMtheir enemiesכִּיkibecauseהָיוּha/YUthey have becomeלְחֵרֶםle/CHE/remdevotedלֹאlonotאוֹסִיףo/SIFwill Iלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTbeעִמָּכֶםim/ma/KHEMwith youאִם־לֹאim-lounlessתַשְׁמִידוּtash/MI/duyou destroyהַחֵרֶםha/CHE/remthe devoted thingמִקִּרְבְּכֶם׃mik/kir/be/KHEMfrom among you

    Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

    קֻםkumget upקַדֵּשׁkad/DESHsanctifyאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleוְאָמַרְתָּve/a/mar/TAand sayהִתְקַדְּשׁוּhit/kad/de/SHUsanctify yourselvesלְמָחָרle/ma/CHARfor tomorrowכִּיkiforכֹהkhothusאָמַרa/MARsaidיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelחֵרֶםCHE/remthere is a devoted thingבְּקִרְבְּךָbe/kir/be/KHAin your midstיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELO Israelלֹאlonotתוּכַלtu/KHALyou canלָקוּםla/KUMstandלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאֹיְבֶיךָoy/VE/khayour enemiesעַד־הֲסִירְכֶםad-ha/si/re/KHEMuntil you take awayהַחֵרֶםha/CHE/remthe devoted thingמִקִּרְבְּכֶם׃mik/kir/be/KHEMfrom among you

    Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

    וְנִקְרַבְתֶּםve/nik/rav/TEMand you shall be brought nearבַּבֹּקֶרbab/BO/kerin the morningלְשִׁבְטֵיכֶםle/shiv/te/KHEMby your tribesוְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it shall beהַשֵּׁבֶטhash/SHE/vetthe tribeאֲשֶׁר־יִלְכְּדֶנּוּa/SHER-yil/ke/DEN/nuwhich takesיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDיִקְרַבyik/RAVshall come nearלַמִּשְׁפָּחוֹתlam/mish/pa/CHOTby familiesוְהַמִּשְׁפָּחָהve/ham/mish/pa/CHAand the familyאֲשֶׁר־יִלְכְּדֶנָּהa/SHER-yil/ke/DEN/nawhich takesיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDתִּקְרַבtik/RAVshall come nearלַבָּתִּיםlab/bat/TIMby householdsוְהַבַּיִתve/hab/BA/yitand the householdאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיִלְכְּדֶנּוּyil/ke/DEN/nutakesיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDיִקְרַבyik/RAVshall come nearלַגְּבָרִים׃lag/ge/va/RIMman by man

    In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.

15. 15

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it shall beהַנִּלְכָּדhan/nil/KADhe who is takenבַּחֵרֶםba/CHE/remwith the devoted thingיִשָּׂרֵףyis/sa/REFshall be burnedבָּאֵשׁba/ESHwith fireאֹתוֹo/TOhimוְאֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹve/ET-kol-a/SHER-loand all that he hasכִּיkibecauseעָבַרa/VARhe has transgressedאֶת־בְּרִיתet-be/RITthe covenant ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוְכִי־עָשָׂהve/KHI-a/SAand because he has doneנְבָלָהne/va/LAfollyבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃be/Yis/ra/ELin Israel

    And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

16. 16

    וַיַּשְׁכֵּםvay/yash/KEMand rose earlyיְהוֹשֻׁעַYe/ho/SHU/aJoshuaבַּבֹּקֶרbab/BO/kerin the morningוַיַּקְרֵבvay/yak/REVand brought nearאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Yis/ra/ELIsraelלִשְׁבָטָיוlish/va/TAYVby its tribesוַיִּלָּכֵדvay/yil/la/KHEDand was takenשֵׁבֶטSHE/vetthe tribe ofיְהוּדָה׃Ye/hu/DAJudah

    So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

    וַיַּקְרֵבvay/yak/REVand he brought nearאֶת־מִשְׁפַּחַתet-mish/PA/chatthe family ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוַיִּלְכֹּדvay/yil/KODand He tookאֵת־מִשְׁפַּחַתet-mish/PA/chatthe family ofהַזַּרְחִיhaz/Zar/CHIthe Zarhitesוַיַּקְרֵבvay/yak/REVand he brought nearאֶת־מִשְׁפַּחַתet-mish/PA/chatthe family ofהַזַּרְחִיhaz/Zar/CHIthe Zarhitesלַגְּבָרִיםlag/ge/va/RIMman by manוַיִּלָּכֵדvay/yil/la/KHEDand was takenזַבְדִּי׃Zav/DIZabdi

    And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

18. 18

    וַיַּקְרֵבvay/yak/REVand he brought nearאֶת־בֵּיתוֹet-be/TOhis householdלַגְּבָרִיםlag/ge/va/RIMman by manוַיִּלָּכֵדvay/yil/la/KHEDand was takenעָכָןA/KHANAchanבֶּן־כַּרְמִיben-Kar/MIthe son of Carmiבֶן־זַבְדִּיven-Zav/DIthe son of Zabdiבֶּן־זֶרַחben-ZE/rachthe son of Zerahלְמַטֵּהle/mat/TEof the tribe ofיְהוּדָה׃Ye/hu/DAJudah

    And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהוֹשֻׁעַYe/ho/SHU/aJoshuaאֶל־עָכָןel-A/KHANto Achanבְּנִיbe/NImy sonשִׂים־נָאsim-nagive pleaseכָבוֹדkha/VODgloryלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוְתֶן־לוֹve/TEN-loand make to Himתוֹדָהto/DAconfessionוְהַגֶּד־נָאve/hag/GED-naand tell pleaseלִיlito meמֶהmewhatעָשִׂיתָa/SI/tayou have doneאַל־תְּכַחֵדal-te/kha/CHEDdo not hide itמִמֶּנִּי׃mim/MEN/nifrom me

    And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

    וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand answeredעָכָןA/KHANAchanאֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁעַet-Ye/ho/SHU/aJoshuaוַיֹּאמַרvay/yo/MARand saidאׇמְנָהom/NAindeedאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIIחָטָאתִיcha/TA/tihave sinnedלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוְכָזֹאתve/kha/ZOTand thusוְכָזֹאתve/kha/ZOTand thusעָשִׂיתִי׃a/SI/tiI have done

    And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

    When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentיְהוֹשֻׁעַYe/ho/SHU/aJoshuaמַלְאָכִיםmal/a/KHIMmessengersוַיָּרֻצוּvay/ya/RU/tsuand they ranהָאֹהֱלָהha/O/he/lato the tentוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdטְמוּנָהte/mu/NAit was hiddenבְּאׇהֳלוֹbe/o/ho/LOin his tentוְהַכֶּסֶףve/hak/KE/sefand the silverתַּחְתֶּיהָ׃tach/TE/haunder it

    So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

23. 23

    וַיִּקָּחוּםvay/yik/ka/CHUMand they took themמִתּוֹךְmit/TOKHfrom the midst ofהָאֹהֶלha/O/helthe tentוַיְבִאוּםvay/vi/UMand they brought themאֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁעַel-Ye/ho/SHU/ato Joshuaוְאֶלve/ELandכׇּל־בְּנֵיkol-be/NEall the children ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיַּצִּקֻםvay/yats/tsi/KUMand laid them outלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.

    And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהוֹשֻׁעַYe/ho/SHU/aJoshuaמֶהmewhyעֲכַרְתָּנוּa/khar/TA/nuhave you troubled usיַעְכׇּרְךָya/kor/KHAwill trouble youיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMin the dayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַיִּרְגְּמוּvay/yir/ge/MUand stonedאֹתוֹo/TOhimכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלkhol-Yis/ra/ELall IsraelאֶבֶןE/venwith stonesוַיִּשְׂרְפוּvay/yis/re/FUand they burnedאֹתָםo/TAMthemבָּאֵשׁba/ESHwith fireוַיִּסְקְלוּvay/yis/ke/LUafter they had stonedאֹתָםo/TAMthemבָּאֲבָנִים׃ba/a/va/NIMwith stones

    And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

    וַיָּקִימוּvay/ya/KI/muand they raisedעָלָיוa/LAYVover himגַּל־אֲבָנִיםgal-a/va/NIMa heap of stonesגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatעַדadtoהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַיָּשׇׁבvay/YA/shovand turnedיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDמֵחֲרוֹןme/cha/RONfrom the fierceness ofאַפּוֹap/POHis angerעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeקָרָאka/RAis calledשֵׁםshemthe name ofהַמָּקוֹםham/ma/KOMthe placeהַהוּאha/HUthatעֵמֶקE/mekthe valley ofעָכוֹרA/KHORAchorעַדadtoהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
