1. 1

   וַיֵּרַעvay/YE/rabut it displeasedאֶל־יוֹנָהel-Yo/NAJonahרָעָהra/Aan evilגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatוַיִּחַרvay/YI/charand burnedלוֹ׃loto him

   But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

2. 2

   And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

   Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDהַהֵיטֵבha/he/TEVdo you do wellחָרָהcha/RAis it kindledלָךְ׃lakhto you

   Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?

5. 5

   וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outיוֹנָהYo/NAJonahמִן־הָעִירmin-ha/IRfrom the cityוַיֵּשֶׁבvay/YE/shevand satמִקֶּדֶםmik/KE/demon the east ofלָעִירla/IRthe cityוַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand he madeלוֹlofor himselfשָׁםshamthereסֻכָּהsuk/KAa boothוַיֵּשֶׁבvay/YE/shevand satתַּחְתֶּיהָtach/TE/haunder itבַּצֵּלbats/TSELin the shadeעַדaduntilאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatיִרְאֶהyir/Ehe might seeמַה־יִּהְיֶהma-yih/YEwhat would beבָּעִיר׃ba/IRin the city

   So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

   וַיְמַןvay/MANand preparedיְהֹוָה־אֱלֹהִיםAdonai-e/lo/HIMthe LORD Godקִיקָיוֹןki/ka/YONa gourdוַיַּעַלvay/YA/aland made it come upמֵעַלme/ALoverלְיוֹנָהLe/yo/NAJonahלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTto beצֵלtsela shadeעַל־רֹאשׁוֹal-ro/SHOupon his headלְהַצִּילle/hats/TSILto deliverלוֹlohimמֵרָעָתוֹme/ra/a/TOfrom his griefוַיִּשְׂמַחvay/yis/MACHand was gladיוֹנָהYo/NAJonahעַל־הַקִּיקָיוֹןal-hak/ki/ka/YONfor the gourdשִׂמְחָהsim/CHAjoyגְדוֹלָה׃ge/do/LAgreat

   And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

   וַיְמַןvay/MANand preparedהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodתּוֹלַעַתto/LA/ata wormבַּעֲלוֹתba/a/LOTwhen roseהַשַּׁחַרhash/SHA/charthe dawnלַמׇּחֳרָתlam/mo/cho/RATthe next dayוַתַּךְvat/TAKHand it smoteאֶת־הַקִּיקָיוֹןet-hak/ki/ka/YONthe gourdוַיִּיבָשׁ׃vay/yi/VASHand it withered

   But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passכִּזְרֹחַkiz/RO/achwhen roseהַשֶּׁמֶשׁhash/SHE/meshthe sunוַיְמַןvay/MANand preparedאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodרוּחַRU/acha windקָדִיםka/DIMeastחֲרִישִׁיתcha/ri/SHITvehementוַתַּךְvat/TAKHand beatהַשֶּׁמֶשׁhash/SHE/meshthe sunעַל־רֹאשׁal-roshupon the head ofיוֹנָהYo/NAJonahוַיִּתְעַלָּףvay/yit/al/LAFand he faintedוַיִּשְׁאַלvay/yish/ALand askedאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹet-naf/SHOhis soulלָמוּתla/MUTto dieוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidטוֹבtovbetterמוֹתִיmo/TImy deathמֵחַיָּי׃me/chay/YAYthan my life

   And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodאֶל־יוֹנָהel-Yo/NAto Jonahהַהֵיטֵבha/he/TEVdo you do wellחָרָה־לְךָcha/RA-le/KHAis it kindled for youעַל־הַקִּיקָיוֹןal-hak/ki/ka/YONfor the gourdוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהֵיטֵבhe/TEVI do wellחָרָה־לִיcha/RA-liit is kindled for meעַד־מָוֶת׃ad-MA/veteven to death

   And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאַתָּהat/TAyouחַסְתָּCHAS/tahave had pityעַל־הַקִּיקָיוֹןal-hak/ki/ka/YONon the gourdאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלֹא־עָמַלְתָּlo-a/MAL/tayou have not laboredבּוֹboon itוְלֹאve/LOand notגִדַּלְתּוֹgid/dal/TOmade it growשֶׁבִּן־לַיְלָהsheb/BIN-LAY/lawhich in a nightהָיָהha/YAcame to beוּבִן־לַיְלָהu/VIN-LAY/laand in a nightאָבָד׃a/VADperished

    Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

    וַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iלֹאlonotאָחוּסa/CHUSshould I spareעַל־נִינְוֵהal-Ni/ne/VENinevehהָעִירha/IRthe cityהַגְּדוֹלָהhag/ge/do/LAthe greatאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhereinיֶשׁ־בָּהּyesh-bathere are in itהַרְבֵּהhar/BEmoreמִשְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵהmish/TEM-es/REthan twelveרִבּוֹrib/BOten thousandאָדָםa/DAMpersonsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoלֹא־יָדַעlo-ya/DAdo not knowבֵּין־יְמִינוֹben-ye/mi/NObetween his right handלִשְׂמֹאלוֹlis/mo/LOand his leftוּבְהֵמָהu/ve/he/MAand cattleרַבָּה׃rab/BAmuch

    And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
