Jonah 4 יוֹנָה פרק ד׳

1. 1

   וַיֵּרַעbut it displeasedאֶל־יוֹנָהto Jonahרָעָהevilגְדוֹלָהgreatוַיִּחַרand he was angryלוֹ׃to him

   But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

2. 2

   וַיִּתְפַּלֵּלand he prayedאֶל־יְהֹוָהto the LORDוַיֹּאמַרand saidאָנָּהI beg youיְהֹוָהthe LORDהֲלוֹא־זֶהis it not thisדְבָרִיmy sayingעַד־הֱיוֹתִיuntil being Iעַל־אַדְמָתִיupon my landעַל־כֵּןthereforeקִדַּמְתִּיI fled beforeלִבְרֹחַto fleeתַּרְשִׁישָׁהtoward TarshishכִּיbecauseיָדַעְתִּיI knowכִּיbecauseאַתָּהyouאֵל־חַנּוּןGod-mercifulוְרַחוּםand mercifulאֶרֶךְslow toאַפַּיִםangerוְרַב־חֶסֶדand great mercyוְנִחָםand relentingעַל־הָרָעָה׃upon the evil

   And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

   וְעַתָּהand nowיְהֹוָהthe LORDקַח־נָאtake I prayאֶת־נַפְשִׁיmy soulמִמֶּנִּיfrom meכִּיbecauseטוֹבgoodמוֹתִיmy deathמֵחַיָּי׃my more than life

   Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהֹוָהthe LORDהַהֵיטֵבdo you do wellחָרָהburnedלָךְ׃to you

   Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?

5. 5

   וַיֵּצֵאand went outיוֹנָהJonahמִן־הָעִירfrom the cityוַיֵּשֶׁבand he dweltמִקֶּדֶםon the east ofלָעִירthe cityוַיַּעַשׂand he madeלוֹto himשָׁםthereסֻכָּהa shelterוַיֵּשֶׁבand he dweltתַּחְתֶּיהָin its placeבַּצֵּלin the shadeעַדuntilאֲשֶׁרwhichיִרְאֶהhe will seeמַה־יִּהְיֶהwhat he shall beבָּעִיר׃in the city

   So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

   וַיְמַןand assignedיְהֹוָה־אֱלֹהִיםthe LORD-Godקִיקָיוֹןa plantוַיַּעַלand he ascendedמֵעַלfrom uponלְיוֹנָהJonahלִהְיוֹתto beצֵלa shadow ofעַל־רֹאשׁוֹupon his headלְהַצִּילto deliverלוֹto himמֵרָעָתוֹfrom his griefוַיִּשְׂמַחand he rejoicedיוֹנָהJonahעַל־הַקִּיקָיוֹןupon the plantשִׂמְחָהjoyגְדוֹלָה׃great

   And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

7. 7

   וַיְמַןand assignedהָאֱלֹהִיםthe Godתּוֹלַעַתa wormבַּעֲלוֹתin the ascending ofהַשַּׁחַרthe dawnלַמׇּחֳרָתthe next dayוַתַּךְand it attackedאֶת־הַקִּיקָיוֹןthe plantוַיִּיבָשׁ׃and it withered

   But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

8. 8

   וַיְהִיand it came to passכִּזְרֹחַwhen risesהַשֶּׁמֶשׁthe sunוַיְמַןand assignedאֱלֹהִיםGodרוּחַwindקָדִיםeastחֲרִישִׁיתvehementוַתַּךְand attackedהַשֶּׁמֶשׁthe sunעַל־רֹאשׁupon the head ofיוֹנָהJonahוַיִּתְעַלָּףand he became faintוַיִּשְׁאַלand wishedאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹhis lifeלָמוּתto dieוַיֹּאמֶרand saidטוֹבgoodמוֹתִיmy deathמֵחַיָּי׃my more than life

   And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

9. 9

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֱלֹהִיםGodאֶל־יוֹנָהto Jonahהַהֵיטֵבdo you do wellחָרָה־לְךָburned for youעַל־הַקִּיקָיוֹןupon the plantוַיֹּאמֶרand saidהֵיטֵבI do wellחָרָה־לִיburned to meעַד־מָוֶת׃until death

   And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

10. 10

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהֹוָהthe LORDאַתָּהyouחַסְתָּyou had compassionעַל־הַקִּיקָיוֹןupon the plantאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־עָמַלְתָּnot you had toiledבּוֹin itוְלֹאand notגִדַּלְתּוֹyou had made grow itשֶׁבִּן־לַיְלָהthat in one nightהָיָהit wasוּבִן־לַיְלָהand in one nightאָבָד׃it perished

    Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

11. 11

    וַאֲנִיand Iלֹאnotאָחוּסshould I spareעַל־נִינְוֵהupon Ninevehהָעִירthe cityהַגְּדוֹלָהthe greatאֲשֶׁרwhichיֶשׁ־בָּהּin which areהַרְבֵּהmore thanמִשְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵהtwelveרִבּוֹten thousandאָדָםpersonsאֲשֶׁרwhoלֹא־יָדַעdo not knowבֵּין־יְמִינוֹbetween their rightלִשְׂמֹאלוֹand their leftוּבְהֵמָהand beastsרַבָּה׃many

    And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
