Job 40 אִיּוֹב פרק מ׳

   וַיַּעַןand answeredיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־אִיּוֹבJobוַיֹּאמַר׃and said

   Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said,

   הֲרֹבshall he that reproves contendעִם־שַׁדַּיwith Almightyיִסּוֹרa faultfinderמוֹכִיחַhe that argues withאֱלוֹהַּGodיַעֲנֶנָּה׃let him answer it

   Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.

3. 3

   וַיַּעַןand he answeredאִיּוֹבJobאֶת־יְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיֹּאמַר׃and said

   Then Job answered the LORD, and said,

   הֵןbeholdקַלֹּתִיI am of small accountמָהwhatאֲשִׁיבֶךָּshall I answer Youיָדִיmy handשַׂמְתִּיhave I setלְמוֹ־פִי׃upon my mouth

   Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.

   אַחַתoneדִּבַּרְתִּיhave I spokenוְלֹאand notאֶעֱנֶהI will not answer againוּשְׁתַּיִםand twoוְלֹאand notאוֹסִיף׃I will proceed no further

   Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

   וַיַּעַן־יְהֹוָהand he answered the LORDאֶת־אִיּוֹבJob[מִןout ofסְעָרָה]the whirlwindוַיֹּאמַר׃and said

   Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

   אֱזׇר־נָאgird up I prayכְגֶבֶרlike a manחֲלָצֶיךָyour loinsאֶשְׁאָלְךָI will ask youוְהוֹדִיעֵנִי׃and declare unto Me

   Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

8. 8

   הַאַףwill you evenתָּפֵרmake voidמִשְׁפָּטִיMy judgmentתַּרְשִׁיעֵנִיwill you condemn Meלְמַעַןin order thatתִּצְדָּק׃you may be justified

   Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?

9. 9

   וְאִם־זְרוֹעַor have you an armכָּאֵלis like Godלָךְto youוּבְקוֹלand with a noiseכָּמֹהוּlike Himתַרְעֵם׃can you thunder

   Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

10. 10

    עֲדֵהdeck yourselfנָאI prayגָאוֹןmajestyוָגֹבַהּand excellencyוְהוֹדand gloryוְהָדָרand beautyתִּלְבָּשׁ׃array yourself

    Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.

11. 11

    הָפֵץcast abroadעֶבְרוֹתthe rage ofאַפֶּךָyour angerוּרְאֵהand beholdכׇל־גֵּאֶהall proud personוְהַשְׁפִּילֵהוּ׃and abase him

    Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him.

12. 12

    רְאֵהbeholdכׇל־גֵּאֶהall proud personהַכְנִיעֵהוּbring him lowוַהֲדֹךְand tread downרְשָׁעִיםwicked menתַּחְתָּם׃in their place

    Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.

13. 13

    טׇמְנֵםhide themבֶּעָפָרin the dustיָחַדtogetherפְּנֵיהֶםtheir facesחֲבֹשׁbind upבַּטָּמוּן׃in the hidden place

    Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.

14. 14

    וְגַם־אֲנִיand also Iאוֹדֶךָּwill I confess unto youכִּי־תוֹשִׁעַthat can saveלְךָfor youיְמִינֶךָ׃your right hand

    Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.

15. 15

    הִנֵּה־נָאbehold I prayבְהֵמוֹתbehemothאֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂיתִיwhich I madeעִמָּךְwith youחָצִירgrassכַּבָּקָרas the oxיֹאכֵל׃he eats

    Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.

16. 16

    הִנֵּה־נָאbehold I prayכֹחוֹhis powerבְמׇתְנָיוin his loinsוְאוֹנוֹand his forceבִּשְׁרִירֵיin the stays ofבִטְנוֹ׃his body

    Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.

17. 17

    יַחְפֹּץhe strainsזְנָבוֹits tailכְמוֹ־אָרֶזlike a cedarגִּידֵיthe sinews ofפַחֲדָוhis thighsיְשֹׂרָגוּ׃they are intertwined

    He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.

18. 18

    עֲצָמָיוhis bonesאֲפִיקֵיas pipes ofנְחֻשָׁהcopperגְּרָמָיוhis gristlesכִּמְטִילlike bars ofבַּרְזֶל׃iron

    His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron.

19. 19

    הוּאheרֵאשִׁיתthe beginning ofדַּרְכֵי־אֵלthe ways of GodהָעֹשׂוֹHe only that made himיַגֵּשׁcan make to approachחַרְבּוֹ׃His sword

    He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.

20. 20

    כִּי־בוּלsurely the produce ofהָרִיםmountainsיִשְׂאוּ־לוֹbring him forthוְכׇל־חַיַּתand all beasts ofהַשָּׂדֶהthe fieldיְשַׂחֲקוּ־שָׁם׃play there

    Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.

21. 21

    תַּחַת־צֶאֱלִיםunder the lotus-treesיִשְׁכָּבwill he lie downבְּסֵתֶרin the covert ofקָנֶהreedsוּבִצָּה׃and fens

    He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.

22. 22

    יְסֻכֻּהוּcover himצֶאֱלִיםthe lotus-treesצִלְלוֹwith their shadowיְסֻבּוּהוּcompass him aboutעַרְבֵי־נָחַל׃the willows of the brook

    The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.

23. 23

    הֵןbeholdיַעֲשֹׁקoverflowsנָהָרthe riverלֹאnotיַחְפּוֹזhe trembles notיִבְטַחhe is confidentכִּי־יָגִיחַthough rush forthיַרְדֵּןJordanאֶל־פִּיהוּ׃to his mouth

    Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.

24. 24

    בְּעֵינָיוby his eyesיִקָּחֶנּוּshall any take himבְּמוֹקְשִׁיםwith a snareיִנְקׇב־אָף׃pierce through his nose

    He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares.

25. 25

    תִּמְשֹׁךְcan you draw outלִוְיָתָןLeviathanבְּחַכָּהwith a fish hookוּבְחֶבֶלand with a cordתַּשְׁקִיעַor press downלְשֹׁנוֹ׃its tongue

    Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?

26. 26

    הֲתָשִׂיםcan you putאַגְמֹןa ringבְּאַפּוֹin his noseוּבְחוֹחַand with a hookתִּקֹּבor boreלֶחֱיוֹ׃his jaw

    Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?

27. 27

    הֲיַרְבֶּהwill he make manyאֵלֶיךָto youתַּחֲנוּנִיםsupplicationsאִם־יְדַבֵּרif speaksאֵלֶיךָto youרַכּוֹת׃soft words

    Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?

28. 28

    הֲיִכְרֹתwill he makeבְּרִיתcovenant ofעִמָּךְwith youתִּקָּחֶנּוּthat you should take himלְעֶבֶדfor a servantעוֹלָם׃eternal

    Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?

29. 29

    הַתְשַׂחֶק־בּוֹwill you play with himכַּצִּפּוֹרlike the birdוְתִקְשְׁרֶנּוּor will you bind himלְנַעֲרוֹתֶיךָ׃for your maidens

    Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?

30. 30

    יִכְרוּwill make a banquet of himעָלָיוupon himחַבָּרִיםthe bands of fishermenיֶחֱצוּהוּwill they part himבֵּיןamongכְּנַעֲנִים׃merchants

    Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?

31. 31

    הַתְמַלֵּאcan you fillבְשֻׂכּוֹתwith barbed ironsעוֹרוֹhis skinוּבְצִלְצַלor with the harpoon ofדָּגִיםfishרֹאשׁוֹ׃his head

    Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?

32. 32

    שִׂים־עָלָיוput upon himכַּפֶּךָyour handזְכֹרrememberמִלְחָמָהwarאַל־תּוֹסַף׃you will do so no more

    Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
