    בְּרִיתcovenant ofכָּרַתִּיI cutלְעֵינָיto my eyesוּמָהand whatאֶתְבּוֹנֵןI considerעַל־בְּתוּלָה׃upon a virgin

    I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

  2. 2

    וּמֶהand whatחֵלֶקpartאֱלוֹהַּGodמִמָּעַלfrom aboveוְנַחֲלַתand the inheritance ofשַׁדַּיAlmightyמִמְּרֹמִים׃from high places

    For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

    הֲלֹא־אֵידis it not calamityלְעַוָּלto an evil doerוְנֵכֶרand a strange punishmentלְפֹעֲלֵיto the workers ofאָוֶן׃iniquity

    Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

    הֲלֹא־הוּאis it not heיִרְאֶהshall seeדְרָכָיmy waysוְכׇל־צְעָדַיand all my stepsיִסְפּוֹר׃does he count

    Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

  5. 5

    אִם־הָלַכְתִּיif I wentעִם־שָׁוְאwith falsehoodוַתַּחַשׁor if has hastedעַל־מִרְמָהupon deceitרַגְלִי׃my foot

    If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

  6. 6

    יִשְׁקְלֵנִיlet me be weighedבְמֹאזְנֵי־צֶדֶקin balances of righteousnessוְיֵדַעand shall knowאֱלוֹהַּGodתֻּמָּתִי׃my integrity

    Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

    אִם־תִּטֶּהif has turnedאַשֻּׁרִיmy stepמִנִּיout ofהַדָּרֶךְthe roadוְאַחַרand afterעֵינַיmy eyesהָלַךְwalkedלִבִּיmy heartוּבְכַפַּיand to my handsדָּבַקhas cleavedמאוּם׃any blot

    If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

    אֶזְרְעָהlet me sowוְאַחֵרand anotherיֹאכֵלshall he eatוְצֶאֱצָאַיand my offspringיְשֹׁרָשׁוּ׃let them be rooted up

    Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

  9. 9

    אִם־נִפְתָּהif it has been deceivedלִבִּיmy heartעַל־אִשָּׁהupon a womanוְעַל־פֶּתַחand upon the door ofרֵעִיmy neighbor'sאָרָבְתִּי׃I have lain in wait

    If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;

    תִּטְחַןlet her grindלְאַחֵרto anotherאִשְׁתִּיmy wifeוְעָלֶיהָand upon itיִכְרְעוּןlet them bow downאֲחֵרִין׃others

    Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

  11. 11

    כִּי־[הִיא]for this is(הוא)זִמָּהan heinous crime(והיא)[וְהוּא]and heעָוֺןiniquityפְּלִילִים׃to be punished by the judges

    For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

  12. 12

    כִּיforאֵשׁfireהִיאit isעַד־אֲבַדּוֹןto destructionתֹּאכֵלit shall devourוּבְכׇל־תְּבוּאָתִיand in all my produceתְשָׁרֵשׁ׃would root out

    For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

    אִם־אֶמְאַסif I rejectמִשְׁפַּטjudgmentעַבְדִּיmy servantוַאֲמָתִיand my female servantבְּרִבָםwhen they contendedעִמָּדִי׃with me

    If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

    וּמָהand whatאֶעֱשֶׂהI doכִּי־יָקוּםwhen shall riseאֵלGodוְכִי־יִפְקֹדand when he visitsמָהwhatאֲשִׁיבֶנּוּ׃shall I answer him

    What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

    הֲלֹא־בַבֶּטֶןis it not in the bellyעֹשֵׂנִיthe one who made meעָשָׂהוּmade himוַיְכֻנֶנּוּand did fashion usבָּרֶחֶםin the wombאֶחָד׃one

    Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

  16. 16

    אִם־אֶמְנַעif I have withheldמֵחֵפֶץfrom their desireדַּלִּיםthe poorוְעֵינֵיor the eyes ofאַלְמָנָהa widowאֲכַלֶּה׃have caused to fail

    If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

    וְאֹכַלand I may eatפִּתִּיmy morselלְבַדִּיaloneוְלֹא־אָכַלand not ateיָתוֹםa fatherless oneמִמֶּנָּה׃from it

    Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

    כִּיforמִנְּעוּרַיfrom my youthגְּדֵלַנִיhe was brought up with meכְאָבlike a fatherוּמִבֶּטֶןand from the womb ofאִמִּיmy motherאַנְחֶנָּה׃I guided her

    (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)

  19. 19

    אִם־אֶרְאֶהif I shall seeאוֹבֵדperishingמִבְּלִיwithoutלְבוּשׁclothingוְאֵיןand there is noכְּסוּתa covering ofלָאֶבְיוֹן׃for the needy person

    If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

  20. 20

    אִם־לֹאif notבֵרְכוּנִיhave blessed meחֲלָצָוhis loinsוּמִגֵּזand from the fleece ofכְּבָשַׂיmy lambsיִתְחַמָּם׃he warmed himself

    If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

    אִם־הֲנִיפוֹתִיif I brandishedעַל־יָתוֹםupon a fatherless oneיָדִיmy handכִּי־אֶרְאֶהif I shall seeבַשַּׁעַרby the gateעֶזְרָתִי׃my help

    If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

    כְּתֵפִיmy shoulderמִשִּׁכְמָהֿfrom my shoulder bladeתִפּוֹלlet it fallוְאֶזְרֹעִיand my armמִקָּנָהֿfrom the boneתִשָּׁבֵר׃let it be broken

    Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

    כִּיforפַחַדthe fear ofאֵלַיwas a terror to meאֵידdestructionאֵלGodוּמִשְּׂאֵתוֹand by reason of his highnessלֹאnotאוּכׇל׃I could not endure

    For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

    אִם־שַׂמְתִּיif have I setזָהָבgoldכִּסְלִיmy hopeוְלַכֶּתֶםand to the pure goldאָמַרְתִּיI saidמִבְטַחִי׃you are my confidence

    If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

    אִם־אֶשְׂמַחif I may rejoiceכִּי־רַבbecause greatחֵילִיmy wealthוְכִי־כַבִּירand because muchמָצְאָהhad gottenיָדִי׃my hand

    If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

    אִם־אֶרְאֶהif I shall seeאוֹרthe sunכִּיbecauseיָהֵלwhen it shinedוְיָרֵחַand moonיָקָרin brightnessהֹלֵךְ׃walking

    If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

  27. 27

    וַיִּפְתְּand has been enticedבַּסֵּתֶרsecretlyלִבִּיmy heartוַתִּשַּׁקand she kissedיָדִיmy handלְפִי׃my mouth

    And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

  28. 28

    גַּם־הוּאalso heעָוֺןiniquityפְּלִילִיto be punished by the judgeכִּי־כִחַשְׁתִּיbecause I deniedלָאֵלto the Godמִמָּעַל׃from above

    This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

  29. 29

    אִם־אֶשְׂמַחif I may rejoiceבְּפִידin the disaster ofמְשַׂנְאִיone who hated meוְהִתְעֹרַרְתִּיor lifted up myselfכִּי־מְצָאוֹbecause it had found himרָע׃evil

    If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

    וְלֹא־נָתַתִּיneither have I sufferedלַחֲטֹאto sinחִכִּיmy mouthלִשְׁאֹלby wishingבְּאָלָהin a curseנַפְשׁוֹ׃his soul

    Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

  31. 31

    אִם־לֹאif notאָמְרוּthey saidמְתֵיthe men ofאׇהֳלִיthe tent of myמִי־יִתֵּןoh thatמִבְּשָׂרוֹfrom his fleshלֹאnotנִשְׂבָּע׃we cannot be satisfied

    If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

  32. 32

    בַּחוּץabroadלֹא־יָלִיןnot it will remain overnightגֵּרa sojournerדְּלָתַיmy doorsלָאֹרַחto the travellerאֶפְתָּח׃I opened

    The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

  33. 33

    אִם־כִּסִּיתִיif I coveredכְאָדָםlike Adamפְּשָׁעָיmy transgressionsלִטְמוֹןby hidingבְּחֻבִּיin my bosomעֲוֺנִי׃my iniquity

    If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

    כִּיbecauseאֶעֱרוֹץdid I fearהָמוֹןa multitudeרַבָּהmuchוּבוּז־מִשְׁפָּחוֹתand the contempt of familiesיְחִתֵּנִיterrify meוָאֶדֹּםthat I kept silenceלֹא־אֵצֵאnot I go forthפָתַח׃out of the door

    Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

  35. 35

    מִיwhoיִתֶּן־לִיwould that oneשֹׁמֵעַwho hearsלִיto meהֶן־תָּוִיbehold my desire isשַׁדַּיAlmightyיַעֲנֵנִיit answers meוְסֵפֶרand that a bookכָּתַבhad writtenאִישׁthe man ofרִיבִי׃my contention

    Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

  36. 36

    אִם־לֹאif notעַל־שִׁכְמִיupon my shoulderאֶשָּׂאֶנּוּI will carry itאֶעֶנְדֶנּוּand bind itעֲטָרוֹתas a crownלִי׃to me

    Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

  37. 37

    מִסְפַּרthe number ofצְעָדַיmy stepsאַגִּידֶנּוּI will tell to himכְּמוֹ־נָגִידas a princeאֲקָרְבֶנּוּ׃would I go near unto him

    I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

  38. 38

    אִם־עָלַיif against meאַדְמָתִיmy landתִזְעָקcryוְיַחַדand togetherתְּלָמֶיהָits furrowsיִבְכָּיוּן׃complain

    If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

  39. 39

    אִם־כֹּחָהּif its fruitsאָכַלְתִּיI ateבְלִי־כָסֶףwithout moneyוְנֶפֶשׁand soulבְּעָלֶיהָits ownersהִפָּחְתִּי׃have caused to lose their life

    If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

  40. 40

    תַּחַתunderחִטָּהwheatיֵצֵאlet growחוֹחַthistlesוְתַחַת־שְׂעֹרָהand under barleyבׇאְשָׁהcockleתַּמּוּare endedדִּבְרֵיthe words ofאִיּוֹב׃Job

    Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
