   וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand he answeredאֱלִיפַזE/li/FAZEliphazהַתֵּימָנִיhat/Te/ma/NIthe Temaniteוַיֹּאמַר׃vay/yo/MARand said

   Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

   הֶחָכָםhe/cha/KHAMshould a wise manיַעֲנֶהya/a/NEanswerדַעַת־רוּחַDA/at-RU/achwindy knowledgeוִימַלֵּאvi/mal/LEand fillקָדִיםka/DIMthe east windבִּטְנוֹ׃bit/NOhis belly

   Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

   הוֹכֵחַho/KHE/acharguingבְּדָבָרbe/da/VARwith talkלֹאlonotיִסְכּוֹןyis/KONprofitableוּמִלִּיםu/mil/LIMor with wordsלֹא־יוֹעִילlo-yo/ILthat do no goodבָּם׃bamwith them

   Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

   אַף־אַתָּהaf-at/TAindeed youתָּפֵרta/FERdo away withיִרְאָהyir/Afearוְתִגְרַעve/tig/RAand hinderשִׂיחָהSI/chameditationלִפְנֵי־אֵל׃lif/NE-elbefore God

   Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

   כִּיkiforיְאַלֵּףye/al/LEFteachesעֲוֺנְךָa/vo/ne/KHAyour iniquityפִיךָFI/khayour mouthוְתִבְחַרve/tiv/CHARand you chooseלְשׁוֹןle/SHONthe tongue ofעֲרוּמִים׃a/ru/MIMthe crafty

   For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

   יַרְשִׁיעֲךָyar/shi/a/KHAcondemns youפִיךָFI/khayour mouthוְלֹא־אָנִיve/LO-A/niand not Iוּשְׂפָתֶיךָu/se/fa/TE/khaand your lipsיַעֲנוּ־בָךְ׃ya/a/NU-vakhtestify against you

   Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

   הֲרִאישׁוֹןha/riy/SHONwere you the firstאָדָםa/DAMmanתִּוָּלֵדtiv/va/LEDbornוְלִפְנֵיve/lif/NEand beforeגְבָעוֹתge/va/OTthe hillsחוֹלָלְתָּ׃cho/LAL/tawere you brought forth

   Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

   הַבְסוֹדhav/SODhave you in the council ofאֱלוֹהַּe/LO/ahGodתִּשְׁמָעtish/MAlistenedוְתִגְרַעve/tig/RAand do you limitאֵלֶיךָe/LE/khato yourselfחׇכְמָה׃chokh/MAwisdom

   Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

9. 9

   מַה־יָּדַעְתָּma-ya/da/TAwhat do you knowוְלֹאve/LOand notנֵדָעne/DAwe knowתָּבִיןta/VINdo you understandוְלֹא־עִמָּנוּve/LO-im/MA/nuthat is not with usהוּא׃huit

   What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

10. 10

    גַּם־שָׂבgam-savboth the gray-hairedגַּם־יָשִׁישׁgam-ya/SHISHalso the agedבָּנוּBA/nuwith usכַּבִּירkab/BIRolderמֵאָבִיךָme/a/VI/khathan your fatherיָמִים׃ya/MIMin days

    With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

11. 11

    הַמְעַטham/ATis it a small thingמִמְּךָmim/me/KHAfor youתַּנְחוּמוֹתtan/chu/MOTthe consolations ofאֵלelGodוְדָבָרve/da/VARand a wordלָאַטla/ATgently spokenעִמָּךְ׃im/MAKHto you

    Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

12. 12

    מַה־יִּקָּחֲךָma-yik/ka/cha/KHAwhy does carry you awayלִבֶּךָlib/BE/khayour heartוּמַה־יִּרְזְמוּןu/MA-yir/ze/MUNand why do flashעֵינֶיךָ׃e/NE/khayour eyes

    Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

13. 13

    כִּי־תָשִׁיבki-ta/SHIVthat you turnאֶל־אֵלel-elto Godרוּחֶךָru/CHE/khayour spiritוְהֹצֵאתָve/ho/TSE/taand let goמִפִּיךָmip/PI/khafrom your mouthמִלִּין׃mil/LINwords

    That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

14. 14

    מָה־אֱנוֹשׁma-e/NOSHwhat is manכִּי־יִזְכֶּהki-yiz/KEthat he should be pureוְכִי־יִצְדַּקve/KHI-yits/DAKor that should be righteousיְלוּדye/LUDborn ofאִשָּׁה׃ish/SHAa woman

    What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

15. 15

    הֵןhenbeholdבִּקְדֹשָׁוbik/do/SHAVin His holy onesלֹאlonotיַאֲמִיןya/a/MINHe puts trustוְשָׁמַיִםve/sha/MA/yimand the heavensלֹא־זַכּוּlo-zak/KUare not pureבְעֵינָיו׃ve/e/NAYVin His eyes

    Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

16. 16

    אַףafhow muchכִּי־נִתְעָבki-nit/AVless one abominableוְנֶאֱלָחve/ne/e/LACHand corruptאִישׁ־שֹׁתֶהish-sho/TEa man who drinksכַמַּיִםkham/MA/yimlike waterעַוְלָה׃av/LAinjustice

    How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

17. 17

    אֲחַוְךָa/chav/KHAI will show youשְׁמַע־לִיshe/MA-lihear meוְזֶה־חָזִיתִיve/ZE-cha/ZI/tiand what I have seenוַאֲסַפֵּרָה׃va/a/sap/PE/raI will declare

    I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

18. 18

    אֲשֶׁר־חֲכָמִיםa/SHER-cha/kha/MIMwhat wise menיַגִּידוּyag/GI/duhave toldוְלֹאve/LOand notכִחֲדוּkhi/cha/DUhiddenמֵאֲבוֹתָם׃me/a/vo/TAMfrom their fathers

    Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

19. 19

    לָהֶםla/HEMto themלְבַדָּםle/vad/DAMaloneנִתְּנָהnit/te/NAwas givenהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe earthוְלֹא־עָבַרve/LO-A/varand no passedזָרzarstrangerבְּתוֹכָם׃be/to/KHAMamong them

    Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

20. 20

    כׇּל־יְמֵיkol-ye/MEall the days ofרָשָׁעra/SHAthe wickedהוּאhuheמִתְחוֹלֵלmit/cho/LELwrithes in painוּמִסְפַּרu/mis/PARand the number ofשָׁנִיםsha/NIMyearsנִצְפְּנוּnits/pe/NUare laid upלֶעָרִיץ׃le/a/RITSfor the ruthless

    The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

21. 21

    קוֹל־פְּחָדִיםkol-pe/cha/DIMa sound of terrorsבְּאׇזְנָיוbe/oz/NAYVin his earsבַּשָּׁלוֹםbash/sha/LOMin prosperityשׁוֹדֵדsho/DEDthe destroyerיְבוֹאֶנּוּ׃ye/vo/EN/nuwill come upon him

    A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

22. 22

    לֹא־יַאֲמִיןlo-ya/a/MINhe does not believeשׁוּבshuvhe will returnמִנִּי־חֹשֶׁךְmin/NI-CHO/shekhout of darkness(וצפו)vatsafav[וְצָפוּי]ve/tsa/FUYand is markedהוּאhuheאֱלֵי־חָרֶב׃e/LE-CHA/revfor the sword

    He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

23. 23

    נֹדֵדno/DEDwandersהוּאhuheלַלֶּחֶםlal/LE/chemfor breadאַיֵּהay/YEwhere is itיָדַעya/DAhe knowsכִּי־נָכוֹןki-na/KHONthat is readyבְּיָדוֹbe/ya/DOin his handיוֹם־חֹשֶׁךְ׃yom-CHO/shekha day of darkness

    He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

24. 24

    יְבַעֲתֻהוּye/va/a/TU/huterrify himצַרtsardistressוּמְצוּקָהu/me/tsu/KAand anguishתִּתְקְפֵהוּtit/ke/FE/huthey overpower himכְּמֶלֶךְke/ME/lekhas a kingעָתִידa/TIDpreparedלַכִּידוֹר׃lak/ki/DORfor the attack

    Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

25. 25

    כִּי־נָטָהki-na/TAfor he stretches outאֶל־אֵלel-elagainst Godיָדוֹya/DOhis handוְאֶל־שַׁדַּיve/EL-shad/DAYand against the Almightyיִתְגַּבָּר׃yit/gab/BARhe behaves arrogantly

    For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

26. 26

    יָרוּץya/RUTShe runsאֵלָיוe/LAYVat Himבְּצַוָּארbe/tsav/VARwith neckבַּעֲבִיba/a/VIwith the thickגַּבֵּיgab/BEthe bosses ofמָגִנָּיו׃ma/gin/NAYVhis shields

    He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

27. 27

    כִּי־כִסָּהki-khis/SAbecause he has coveredפָנָיוfa/NAYVhis faceבְּחֶלְבּוֹbe/chel/BOwith his fatוַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand gatheredפִּימָהpi/MAfatעֲלֵי־כָסֶל׃a/LE-KHA/selon his loins

    Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

28. 28

    וַיִּשְׁכּוֹןvay/yish/KONand he has dweltעָרִיםa/RIMin citiesנִכְחָדוֹתnikh/cha/DOTdesolateבָּתִּיםbat/TIMin housesלֹא־יֵשְׁבוּlo-YESH/vuthat none inhabitלָמוֹLA/mofor themאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהִתְעַתְּדוּhit/at/te/DUare destinedלְגַלִּים׃le/gal/LIMto become heaps

    And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

29. 29

    לֹא־יֶעְשַׁרlo-ye/SHARhe will not be richוְלֹא־יָקוּםve/LO-ya/KUMnor will endureחֵילוֹche/LOhis wealthוְלֹא־יִטֶּהve/LO-yit/TEnor will spreadלָאָרֶץla/A/retson the earthמִנְלָם׃min/LAMtheir possessions

    He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

30. 30

    לֹא־יָסוּרlo-ya/SURhe will not escapeמִנִּי־חֹשֶׁךְmin/NI-CHO/shekhout of darknessיֹנַקְתּוֹyo/nak/TOhis shootsתְּיַבֵּשׁte/yab/BESHwill dry upשַׁלְהָבֶתshal/HA/veta flameוְיָסוּרve/ya/SURand he will departבְּרוּחַbe/RU/achby the breath ofפִּיו׃pivhis mouth

    He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

31. 31

    אַל־יַאֲמֵןal-ya/a/MENlet him not trustבַּשָּׁוbash/SHAVin emptinessנִתְעָהnit/Adeceiving himselfכִּי־שָׁוְאki-shavfor emptinessתִּהְיֶהtih/YEshall beתְמוּרָתוֹ׃te/mu/ra/TOhis reward

    Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

32. 32

    בְּלֹא־יוֹמוֹbe/LO-yo/MObefore his timeתִּמָּלֵאtim/ma/LEit will be fulfilledוְכִפָּתוֹve/khip/pa/TOand his branchלֹאlonotרַעֲנָנָה׃ra/a/na/NAgreen

    It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

33. 33

    יַחְמֹסyach/MOShe will shake offכַּגֶּפֶןkag/GE/fenlike the vineבִּסְרוֹbis/ROhis unripe grapesוְיַשְׁלֵךְve/yash/LEKHand cast offכַּזַּיִתkaz/ZA/yitlike the olive treeנִצָּתוֹ׃nits/tsa/TOhis blossom

    He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

34. 34

    כִּי־עֲדַתki-a/DATfor the company ofחָנֵףcha/NEFthe godlessגַּלְמוּדgal/MUDis barrenוְאֵשׁve/ESHand fireאָכְלָהa/khe/LAwill consumeאׇהֳלֵי־שֹׁחַד׃o/ho/LE-SHO/chadthe tents of bribery

    For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

35. 35

    הָרֹהha/ROthey conceiveעָמָלa/MALmischiefוְיָלֹדve/YA/lodand bring forthאָוֶןA/veniniquityוּבִטְנָםu/vit/NAMand their bellyתָּכִיןta/KHINpreparesמִרְמָה׃mir/MAdeceit

    They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
