וַיַּעַןand he answeredאֱלִיפַזEliphazהַתֵּימָנִיthe Temaniteוַיֹּאמַר׃and said
Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
- 2
הֶחָכָםshould a wise manיַעֲנֶהutterדַעַת־רוּחַvain knowledgeוִימַלֵּאand fillקָדִיםthe east windבִּטְנוֹ׃his belly
Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
- 3
הוֹכֵחַshould he reasonבְּדָבָרin wordלֹאnotיִסְכּוֹןunprofitableוּמִלִּיםand wordsלֹא־יוֹעִילhe can do no goodבָּם׃in them
Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

אַף־אַתָּהyea youתָּפֵרyou cast offיִרְאָהfearוְתִגְרַעand restrainשִׂיחָהprayerלִפְנֵי־אֵל׃before God
Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

כִּיforיְאַלֵּףuttersעֲוֺנְךָyour iniquityפִיךָyour mouthוְתִבְחַרso you may chooseלְשׁוֹןthe language ofעֲרוּמִים׃crafty people
For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

יַרְשִׁיעֲךָit condemns as guilty youפִיךָyour mouthוְלֹא־אָנִיand not Iוּשְׂפָתֶיךָand your lipsיַעֲנוּ־בָךְ׃testify against you
Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

הֲרִאישׁוֹןare you the firstאָדָםmanתִּוָּלֵדwere you bornוְלִפְנֵיand beforeגְבָעוֹתthe hillsחוֹלָלְתָּ׃were you brought forth
Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
- 8
הַבְסוֹדhave you heard the secret ofאֱלוֹהַּGodתִּשְׁמָעyou heardוְתִגְרַעand do you restrainאֵלֶיךָto youחׇכְמָה׃wisdom
Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

מַה־יָּדַעְתָּwhat do you knowוְלֹאand notנֵדָעwe knowתָּבִיןwhat do you understandוְלֹא־עִמָּנוּwhich is not in usהוּא׃he
What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
- 10
גַּם־שָׂבboth the grayheadedגַּם־יָשִׁישׁalso the agedבָּנוּwith usכַּבִּירmuch elderמֵאָבִיךָthan your fatherיָמִים׃days
With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

הַמְעַטis it a small thingמִמְּךָfrom youתַּנְחוּמוֹתthe consolations ofאֵלGodוְדָבָרand thingלָאַטsecretעִמָּךְ׃with you
Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

מַה־יִּקָּחֲךָwhy does carry you awayלִבֶּךָyour heartוּמַה־יִּרְזְמוּןand what do wink atעֵינֶיךָ׃your eyes
Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
- 13
כִּי־תָשִׁיבthat you turnאֶל־אֵלunto Godרוּחֶךָyour spiritוְהֹצֵאתָand you will bring outמִפִּיךָfrom your mouthמִלִּין׃words
That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

מָה־אֱנוֹשׁwhat is manכִּי־יִזְכֶּהthat he should be cleanוְכִי־יִצְדַּקand that he will be righteousיְלוּדborn ofאִשָּׁה׃a woman
What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

הֵןbeholdבִּקְדֹשָׁוin his saintsלֹאnotיַאֲמִיןshall believeוְשָׁמַיִםand the heavensלֹא־זַכּוּnot they are pureבְעֵינָיו׃in his sight
Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

אַףmoreoverכִּי־נִתְעָבhow much more abominableוְנֶאֱלָחand one who is corruptאִישׁ־שֹׁתֶהis man who drinksכַמַּיִםlike the waterעַוְלָה׃injustice
How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

אֲחַוְךָI will tell youשְׁמַע־לִיhearken to meוְזֶה־חָזִיתִיand this I have beheldוַאֲסַפֵּרָה׃and I will recount
I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

אֲשֶׁר־חֲכָמִיםwhich wiseיַגִּידוּthey would tellוְלֹאand notכִחֲדוּhave not hid itמֵאֲבוֹתָם׃from their fathers
Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
- 19
לָהֶםto themלְבַדָּםfor themselves aloneנִתְּנָהwas givenהָאָרֶץthe earthוְלֹא־עָבַרand not passedזָרan outsiderבְּתוֹכָם׃among them
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

כׇּל־יְמֵיall days ofרָשָׁעwickedהוּאheמִתְחוֹלֵלtravails with painוּמִסְפַּרand the number ofשָׁנִיםyearsנִצְפְּנוּis hiddenלֶעָרִיץ׃to the oppressor
The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

קוֹל־פְּחָדִיםa dreadful soundבְּאׇזְנָיוin his earsבַּשָּׁלוֹםin prosperityשׁוֹדֵדthe destroyerיְבוֹאֶנּוּ׃he will come to him
A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

לֹא־יַאֲמִיןnot shall believeשׁוּבthat he shall returnמִנִּי־חֹשֶׁךְout of darkness(וצפו)[וְצָפוּי]and he is waited forהוּאheאֱלֵי־חָרֶב׃to a sword
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

נֹדֵדhe wanders abroadהוּאheלַלֶּחֶםto the breadאַיֵּהsaying where is itיָדַעhe knewכִּי־נָכוֹןthat is readyבְּיָדוֹin his handיוֹם־חֹשֶׁךְ׃day darkness
He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

יְבַעֲתֻהוּshall make him afraidצַרtroubleוּמְצוּקָהand distressתִּתְקְפֵהוּthey shall prevail against himכְּמֶלֶךְas a kingעָתִידreadyלַכִּידוֹר׃for the battle
Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

כִּי־נָטָהfor he stretches outאֶל־אֵלunto Godיָדוֹhis handוְאֶל־שַׁדַּיand Almightyיִתְגַּבָּר׃strengthens himself
For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

יָרוּץhe runsאֵלָיוto himבְּצַוָּארeven on his neckבַּעֲבִיin the thickness ofגַּבֵּיthe bosses ofמָגִנָּיו׃his bucklers
He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
- 27
כִּי־כִסָּהbecause it has coveredפָנָיוhis faceבְּחֶלְבּוֹwith his fatוַיַּעַשׂand makesפִּימָהcollops of fatעֲלֵי־כָסֶל׃on his flanks
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

וַיִּשְׁכּוֹןand he dweltעָרִיםcitiesנִכְחָדוֹתdesolateבָּתִּיםhousesלֹא־יֵשְׁבוּwhich no man inhabitsלָמוֹfor themאֲשֶׁרwhichהִתְעַתְּדוּare readyלְגַלִּים׃for heaps of stones
And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

לֹא־יֶעְשַׁרnot he will be richוְלֹא־יָקוּםand not he shall riseחֵילוֹhis substanceוְלֹא־יִטֶּהneither shall he prolongלָאָרֶץto the groundמִנְלָם׃the perfection thereof
He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

לֹא־יָסוּרhe shall not departמִנִּי־חֹשֶׁךְout of darknessיֹנַקְתּוֹhis branchesתְּיַבֵּשׁit will dry upשַׁלְהָבֶתa flameוְיָסוּרso he may departבְּרוּחַby the breath ofפִּיו׃his mouth
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

אַל־יַאֲמֵןlet not trustבַּשָּׁוin vanityנִתְעָהhim that is deceivedכִּי־שָׁוְאbecause falsehoodתִּהְיֶהshall beתְמוּרָתוֹ׃his recompense
Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

בְּלֹא־יוֹמוֹbefore his timeתִּמָּלֵאit shall be accomplishedוְכִפָּתוֹand his branchלֹאnotרַעֲנָנָה׃shall be green
It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
- 33
יַחְמֹסhe shall shake offכַּגֶּפֶןlike the vineבִּסְרוֹhis unripe grapesוְיַשְׁלֵךְand he will shedכַּזַּיִתlike the olive treeנִצָּתוֹ׃his blossom
He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

כִּי־עֲדַתbecause congregation ofחָנֵףa hypocriteגַּלְמוּדshall be desolateוְאֵשׁand fireאָכְלָהit consumedאׇהֳלֵי־שֹׁחַד׃the tabernacles of bribery
For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

הָרֹהthey conceiveעָמָלgrievousnessוְיָלֹדand bring forthאָוֶןvanityוּבִטְנָםand their bellyתָּכִיןpreparesמִרְמָה׃deceit
They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
