Jeremiah 8 יִרְמְיָהוּ פרק ח׳

1. 1

   בָּעֵתat the timeהַהִיאthatנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORD(ויציאו)[יוֹצִיאוּ]they brought outאֶת־עַצְמוֹתthe bones ofמַלְכֵי־יְהוּדָהthe kings of Judahוְאֶת־עַצְמוֹת־שָׂרָיוand the bones of his commandersוְאֶת־עַצְמוֹתand the bones ofהַכֹּהֲנִיםthe priestsוְאֵתandעַצְמוֹתthe bones ofהַנְּבִיאִיםthe prophetsוְאֵתandעַצְמוֹתthe bones ofיוֹשְׁבֵי־יְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִםthe inhabitants of Jerusalemמִקִּבְרֵיהֶם׃from their graves

   At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves:

   וּשְׁטָחוּםand they will spread out themלַשֶּׁמֶשׁto the sunוְלַיָּרֵחַand to the moonוּלְכֹלand to everyצְבָאan army ofהַשָּׁמַיִםthe heavensאֲשֶׁרwhichאֲהֵבוּםthey loved themוַאֲשֶׁרand whichעֲבָדוּםthey served themוַאֲשֶׁרand whichהָלְכוּwentאַחֲרֵיהֶםafter themוַאֲשֶׁרand whichדְּרָשׁוּםthey consulted themוַאֲשֶׁרand whichהִשְׁתַּחֲווּworshipלָהֶםto themלֹאnotיֵאָסְפוּshall they be gatheredוְלֹאand notיִקָּבֵרוּthey will be buriedלְדֹמֶןdungעַל־פְּנֵיupon the face ofהָאֲדָמָהthe earthיִהְיוּ׃shall be

   And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

   וְנִבְחַרand it will be chosenמָוֶתdeathמֵחַיִּיםmore than lifeלְכֹלfor allהַשְּׁאֵרִיתthe remnantהַנִּשְׁאָרִיםthe remainingמִן־הַמִּשְׁפָּחָהfrom the familyהָרָעָהthe evilהַזֹּאתthisבְּכׇל־הַמְּקֹמוֹתin all the placesהַנִּשְׁאָרִיםthe remainingאֲשֶׁרwhichהִדַּחְתִּיםI have banished themשָׁםthereנְאֻםsaysיְהֹוָהthe LORDצְבָאוֹת׃of Hosts

   And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.

4. 4

   וְאָמַרְתָּand sayאֲלֵיהֶםto themכֹּהthusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDהֲיִפְּלוּdo people fallוְלֹאand notיָקוּמוּthey shall standאִם־יָשׁוּבif returnוְלֹאand notיָשׁוּב׃he shall return

   Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?

   מַדּוּעַwhyשׁוֹבְבָהhas it turned awayהָעָםthe peopleהַזֶּהthisיְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםJerusalemמְשֻׁבָהthe apostate oneנִצַּחַתenduringהֶחֱזִיקוּthey heldבַּתַּרְמִתin the deceitfulness ofמֵאֲנוּthat would notלָשׁוּב׃to return

   Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.

   הִקְשַׁבְתִּיI have paid attentionוָאֶשְׁמָעand I have heardלוֹא־כֵןnot thusיְדַבֵּרוּwill they speakאֵיןthere is noאִישׁa manנִחָםrepentsעַל־רָעָתוֹupon his evilלֵאמֹרsayingמֶהwhatעָשִׂיתִיhave I doneכֻּלֹּהall of itשָׁבreturned[בִּמְרוּצָתָם]in their courseכְּסוּסlike a horseשׁוֹטֵףrushesבַּמִּלְחָמָה׃in the battle

   I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.

   גַּם־חֲסִידָהalso the storkבַשָּׁמַיִםin the heavensיָדְעָהshe had knownמוֹעֲדֶיהָits appointed timesוְתֹרand a turtle dove(וסוס)[וְסִיס]and a swiftוְעָגוּרand a craneשָׁמְרוּkeptאֶת־עֵתthe time ofבֹּאָנָהtheir comingוְעַמִּיand my peopleלֹאnotיָדְעוּthey knewאֵת־מִשְׁפַּטthe judgment ofיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

   Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.

8. 8

   אֵיכָהhowתֹאמְרוּyou sayחֲכָמִיםwiseאֲנַחְנוּweוְתוֹרַתand law ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDאִתָּנוּwith usאָכֵןsurelyהִנֵּהbeholdלַשֶּׁקֶרto the falsehoodעָשָׂהhe didעֵטa stylus ofשֶׁקֶרfalseסֹפְרִים׃were scribes

   How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.

9. 9

   הֹבִשׁוּare ashamedחֲכָמִיםthe wise menחַתּוּthey were dismayedוַיִּלָּכֵדוּand they have been capturedהִנֵּהbeholdבִדְבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDמָאָסוּthey rejectedוְחׇכְמַתand wisdom ofמֶהwhatלָהֶם׃to them

   The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

10. 10

    לָכֵןthereforeאֶתֵּןI will giveאֶת־נְשֵׁיהֶםtheir wivesלַאֲחֵרִיםto othersשְׂדוֹתֵיהֶםtheir fieldsלְיוֹרְשִׁיםto those who dispossessכִּיbecauseמִקָּטֹןfrom smallוְעַד־גָּדוֹלand unto greatכֻּלֹּהall of itבֹּצֵעַone who gains unjustlyבָּצַעunjust gainמִנָּבִיאfrom a prophetוְעַד־כֹּהֵןand unto a priestכֻּלֹּהall of itעֹשֶׂהdealsשָּׁקֶר׃falsehood

    Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.

11. 11

    וַיְרַפּוּand they have healedאֶת־שֶׁבֶרthe hurt ofבַּת־עַמִּיdaughter of my peopleעַל־נְקַלָּהslightlyלֵאמֹרsayingשָׁלוֹםpeaceשָׁלוֹםpeaceוְאֵיןand there is noשָׁלוֹם׃peace

    For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

12. 12

    הֹבִשׁוּare ashamedכִּיbecauseתוֹעֵבָהabominableעָשׂוּthey didגַּם־בּוֹשׁalso were ashamedלֹא־יֵבֹשׁוּshall not be ashamedוְהִכָּלֵםand to be ashamedלֹאnotיָדָעוּthey knowלָכֵןthereforeיִפְּלוּshall fallבַנֹּפְלִיםamong the ones who fallבְּעֵתin timeפְּקֻדָּתָםtheir punishmentיִכָּשְׁלוּthey might stumbleאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

    Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.

13. 13

    אָסֹףsurelyאֲסִיפֵםI will make an end of themנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDאֵיןthere is noעֲנָבִיםgrapesבַּגֶּפֶןon the vineוְאֵיןand there is noתְּאֵנִיםfigsבַּתְּאֵנָהon the fig treeוְהֶעָלֶהand the leafageנָבֵלit withersוָאֶתֵּןand I gaveלָהֶםto themיַעַבְרוּם׃they will pass away them

    I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.

14. 14

    עַל־מָהwhyאֲנַחְנוּweיֹשְׁבִיםdwellingהֵאָסְפוּgather yourselvesוְנָבוֹאso we may goאֶל־עָרֵיto the cities ofהַמִּבְצָרthe strongholdוְנִדְּמָה־שָּׁםso we may perish thereכִּיbecauseיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵינוּour Godהֲדִמָּנוּhe has cut us offוַיַּשְׁקֵנוּand he has given to drink usמֵי־רֹאשׁthe water of gallכִּיbecauseחָטָאנוּwe have sinnedלַיהֹוָה׃to the LORD

    Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.

15. 15

    קַוֵּהwe lookedלְשָׁלוֹםfor peaceוְאֵיןand there is noטוֹבgoodלְעֵתfor a time ofמַרְפֵּהhealingוְהִנֵּהand beholdבְעָתָה׃terror

    We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!

16. 16

    מִדָּןfrom Danנִשְׁמַעwas heardנַחְרַתthe snorting ofסוּסָיוtheir horsesמִקּוֹלat the voice ofמִצְהֲלוֹתthe neighings ofאַבִּירָיוhis strong onesרָעֲשָׁהshookכׇּל־הָאָרֶץall the landוַיָּבוֹאוּand they cameוַיֹּאכְלוּand they ateאֶרֶץthe land ofוּמְלוֹאָהּand what fills itעִירthe city ofוְיֹשְׁבֵיand the inhabitants ofבָהּ׃in it

    The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.

17. 17

    כִּיforהִנְנִיbehold Iמְשַׁלֵּחַare sendingבָּכֶםin youנְחָשִׁיםserpentsצִפְעֹנִיםvipersאֲשֶׁרwhichאֵין־לָהֶםthere is no to themלָחַשׁcharmingוְנִשְּׁכוּand they will biteאֶתְכֶםyouנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃says the LORD

    For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD.

18. 18

    מַבְלִיגִיתִיmy cheerfulnessעֲלֵיonיָגוֹןsorrowעָלַיupon meלִבִּיmy heartדַוָּי׃is faint

    When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.

19. 19

    הִנֵּה־קוֹלbehold voice ofשַׁוְעַתthe cry for help ofבַּת־עַמִּיdaughter of my peopleמֵאֶרֶץfrom the land ofמַרְחַקִּיםa far countryהַיהֹוָהis the LORDאֵיןthere is noבְּצִיּוֹןin Zionאִם־מַלְכָּהּif its kingאֵיןthere is noבָּהּin itמַדּוּעַwhyהִכְעִסוּנִיthey have provoked me to angerבִּפְסִלֵיהֶםby their idolsבְּהַבְלֵיin the things ofנֵכָר׃strange

    Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?

20. 20

    עָבַרpassedקָצִירharvestכָּלָהis endedקָיִץsummerוַאֲנַחְנוּand we areלוֹאnotנוֹשָׁעְנוּ׃we have been saved

    The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

21. 21

    עַל־שֶׁבֶרupon destructionבַּת־עַמִּיdaughter of my peopleהׇשְׁבָּרְתִּיbe broken(I)קָדַרְתִּיI am in mourningשַׁמָּהastonishmentהֶחֱזִקָתְנִי׃it has taken hold of me

    For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.

22. 22

    הַצֳּרִיthe He-afflicted myאֵיןthere is noבְּגִלְעָדin Gileadאִם־רֹפֵאif a physicianאֵיןthere is noשָׁםthereכִּיbecauseמַדּוּעַwhyלֹאnotעָלְתָהhas surpassedאֲרֻכַתthe healing ofבַּת־עַמִּי׃daughter of my people

    Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

23. 23

    מִי־יִתֵּןwould thatרֹאשִׁיmy headמַיִםwaterוְעֵינִיand my eyeמְקוֹרfountain ofדִּמְעָהtearsוְאֶבְכֶּהso I may weepיוֹמָםby dayוָלַיְלָהand a nightאֵת־חַלְלֵיslain ofבַת־עַמִּי׃the daughter of my people

    Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
