   הַדָּבָרthe wordאֲשֶׁרwhichדִּבֶּרspokeיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־בָּבֶלto Babylonאֶל־אֶרֶץto the land ofכַּשְׂדִּיםChaldeansבְּיַדin the hand ofיִרְמְיָהוּJeremiahהַנָּבִיא׃the prophet

   The word that the LORD spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet.

2. 2

   הַגִּידוּdeclareבַגּוֹיִםamong the nationsוְהַשְׁמִיעוּand make heardוּשְׂאוּ־נֵסand lift up a standardהַשְׁמִיעוּtellאַל־תְּכַחֵדוּdo not concealאִמְרוּsayנִלְכְּדָהit was capturedבָבֶלBabylonהֹבִישׁis confoundedבֵּלBelחַתis broken in piecesמְרֹדָךְMardukהֹבִישׁוּthey have been put to shameעֲצַבֶּיהָits imagesחַתּוּthey were dismayedגִּלּוּלֶיהָ׃its idols

   Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.

   כִּיforעָלָהascendedעָלֶיהָupon itגּוֹיnationמִצָּפוֹןfrom the northהוּא־יָשִׁיתhe shall makeאֶת־אַרְצָהּits landלְשַׁמָּהdesolateוְלֹא־יִהְיֶהand shall have no moreיוֹשֵׁבinhabitantבָּהּin itמֵאָדָםfor manוְעַד־בְּהֵמָהand unto beastנָדוּthey will take flightהָלָכוּ׃they are gone

   For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.

   בַּיָּמִיםin the daysהָהֵמָּהthoseוּבָעֵתand at that timeהַהִיאthatנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDיָבֹאוּcomeבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelהֵמָּהtheyוּבְנֵי־יְהוּדָהand sons of Judahיַחְדָּוtogetherהָלוֹךְgoing onוּבָכוֹand weepingיֵלֵכוּthey shall goוְאֶת־יְהֹוָהand the LORDאֱלֹהֵיהֶםtheir Godיְבַקֵּשׁוּ׃they seek

   In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God.

   צִיּוֹןZionיִשְׁאָלוּthey will ask forדֶּרֶךְthe way ofהֵנָּהhitherפְנֵיהֶםtheir facesבֹּאוּcomeוְנִלְווּand they will join themselvesאֶל־יְהֹוָהto the LORDבְּרִיתa covenantעוֹלָםeternalלֹאnotתִשָּׁכֵחַ׃it will be forgotten

   They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten.

6. 6

   צֹאןsheepאֹבְדוֹתlost(היה)[הָיוּ]wereעַמִּיmy peopleרֹעֵיהֶםtheir shepherdsהִתְעוּםthey have caused to wander themהָרִיםon the mountains(שובבים)[שׁוֹבְבוּם]they have led away themמֵהַרfrom the mountain ofאֶל־גִּבְעָהto a hillהָלָכוּthey are goneשָׁכְחוּthey have forgottenרִבְצָם׃their resting place

   My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace.

7. 7

   כׇּל־מוֹצְאֵיהֶםall those who found themאֲכָלוּםthey devoured themוְצָרֵיהֶםand their opponentsאָמְרוּthey saidלֹאnotנֶאְשָׁםwe are guiltyתַּחַתunderאֲשֶׁרwhichחָטְאוּsinnedלַיהֹוָהto the LORDנְוֵה־צֶדֶקthe abode of righteousnessוּמִקְוֵהand the hope ofאֲבוֹתֵיהֶםtheir fathersיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

   All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers.

8. 8

   נֻדוּflee awayמִתּוֹךְfrom the midst ofבָּבֶלBabylonוּמֵאֶרֶץand from the land ofכַּשְׂדִּיםChaldeans(יצאו)[צֵאוּ]go forthוִהְיוּand beכְּעַתּוּדִיםlike he goatsלִפְנֵי־צֹאן׃before flocks

   Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks.

9. 9

   כִּיforהִנֵּהbeholdאָנֹכִיIמֵעִירstirring upוּמַעֲלֶהand bringing upעַל־בָּבֶלupon Babylonקְהַל־גּוֹיִםassembly of nationsגְּדֹלִיםgreatמֵאֶרֶץfrom the land ofצָפוֹןthe northוְעָרְכוּand shall arrangeלָהּto herמִשָּׁםfrom thereתִּלָּכֵדit will be capturedחִצָּיוhis arrowsכְּגִבּוֹרlike a warriorמַשְׁכִּילskillfulלֹאnotיָשׁוּבhe shall returnרֵיקָם׃empty handed

   For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain.

10. 10

    וְהָיְתָהand it beכַשְׂדִּיםthe Chaldeansלְשָׁלָלto the spoilכׇּל־שֹׁלְלֶיהָall those who plunder itיִשְׂבָּעוּthey will be satisfiedנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃says the LORD

    And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the LORD.

11. 11

    כִּיbecause(תשמחי)[תִשְׂמְחוּ]you were gladכִּיbecause(תעלזי)[תַעַלְזוּ]you rejoicedשֹׁסֵיO plunderers ofנַחֲלָתִיmy own inheritanceכִּיbecause[תָפוּשׁוּ]you are grown fatכְּעֶגְלָהlike a heiferדָשָׁהthreshing[וְתִצְהֲלוּ]so you may neighכָּאַבִּרִים׃like mighty horses

    Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls;

    בּוֹשָׁהshe is ashamedאִמְּכֶםyour motherמְאֹדexceedinglyחָפְרָהshall be disgracedיוֹלַדְתְּכֶםthe one who gave birth youהִנֵּהbeholdאַחֲרִיתthe last ofגּוֹיִםnationsמִדְבָּרa wildernessצִיָּהdryוַעֲרָבָה׃and a desert plain

    Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.

13. 13

    מִקֶּצֶףfrom the wrath ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDלֹאnotתֵשֵׁבit shall be inhabitedוְהָיְתָהand it beשְׁמָמָהdesolateכֻּלָּהּall of itכֹּלallעֹבֵרpassing byעַל־בָּבֶלupon Babylonיִשֹּׁםshall be horrifiedוְיִשְׁרֹקso he may hissעַל־כׇּל־מַכּוֹתֶיהָ׃upon all its wounds

    Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.

14. 14

    עִרְכוּset in orderעַל־בָּבֶלupon Babylonסָבִיבall aroundכׇּל־דֹּרְכֵיall who bendקֶשֶׁתthe bowיְדוּshootאֵלֶיהָto herאַל־תַּחְמְלוּdo not you spareאֶל־חֵץto the arrowכִּיforלַיהֹוָהto the LORDחָטָאָה׃it has sinned

    Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the LORD.

15. 15

    הָרִיעוּshoutעָלֶיהָupon itסָבִיבall aroundנָתְנָהgaveיָדָהּher handנָפְלוּfell[אׇשְׁיוֹתֶיהָ]her buttressesנֶהֶרְסוּthey were destroyedחוֹמוֹתֶיהָits wallsכִּיforנִקְמַתthe vengeance ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDהִיאit isהִנָּקְמוּavenge yourselfבָהּin itכַּאֲשֶׁרasעָשְׂתָהdidעֲשׂוּ־לָהּ׃do to her

    Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.

16. 16

    כִּרְתוּcut offזוֹרֵעַone who sowsמִבָּבֶלfrom Babylonוְתֹפֵשׂand one who wieldsמַגָּלsickleבְּעֵתin timeקָצִירharvestמִפְּנֵיbecause ofחֶרֶבthe sword ofהַיּוֹנָהthe oppressingאִישׁa manאֶל־עַמּוֹunto his peopleיִפְנוּthey shall turnוְאִישׁand a manלְאַרְצוֹto his own landיָנֻסוּ׃they will flee

    Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.

17. 17

    שֶׂהa sheepפְזוּרָהscatteredיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֲרָיוֹתlionsהִדִּיחוּhave driven him awayהָרִאשׁוֹןthe firstאֲכָלוֹdevoured himמֶלֶךְthe king ofאַשּׁוּרAssyriaוְזֶהand thisהָאַחֲרוֹןthe lastעִצְּמוֹhas broken his bonesנְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּרNebuchadrezzarמֶלֶךְthe king ofבָּבֶל׃Babylon

    Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.

18. 18

    לָכֵןthereforeכֹּה־אָמַרthus saysיְהֹוָהthe LORDצְבָאוֹתof Hostsאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהִנְנִיbehold Iפֹקֵדvisitingאֶל־מֶלֶךְto the king ofבָּבֶלBabylonוְאֶל־אַרְצוֹand his landכַּאֲשֶׁרasפָּקַדְתִּיI visitedאֶל־מֶלֶךְto the king ofאַשּׁוּר׃Assyria

    Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria.

19. 19

    וְשֹׁבַבְתִּיand I will restoreאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֶל־נָוֵהוּto his habitationוְרָעָהand he shall feedהַכַּרְמֶלCarmelוְהַבָּשָׁןand Bashanוּבְהַרand in the hill country ofאֶפְרַיִםEphraimוְהַגִּלְעָדand Gileadתִּשְׂבַּעit will be satisfiedנַפְשׁוֹ׃his soul

    And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead.

20. 20

    בַּיָּמִיםin the daysהָהֵםthoseוּבָעֵתand at that timeהַהִיאthatנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDיְבֻקַּשׁit will be soughtאֶת־עֲוֺןthe iniquity ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְאֵינֶנּוּand there shall be noneוְאֶת־חַטֹּאתand the sins ofיְהוּדָהJudahוְלֹאand notתִמָּצֶאינָהthey will be foundכִּיbecauseאֶסְלַחI will pardonלַאֲשֶׁרthem whomאַשְׁאִיר׃I shall leave

    In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.

21. 21

    עַל־הָאָרֶץupon the landמְרָתַיִםMerathaimעֲלֵהgo upעָלֶיהָupon itוְאֶל־יוֹשְׁבֵיand the inhabitants ofפְּקוֹדPekodחֲרֹבlay wasteוְהַחֲרֵםand utterly destroyאַחֲרֵיהֶםafter themנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDוַעֲשֵׂהand doכְּכֹלaccording to allאֲשֶׁרwhichצִוִּיתִיךָ׃I commanded you

    Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.

22. 22

    קוֹלthe voice ofמִלְחָמָהwarבָּאָרֶץin the landוְשֶׁבֶרand destructionגָּדוֹל׃great

    A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.

23. 23

    אֵיךְhowנִגְדַּעit has been cut offוַיִּשָּׁבֵרand it has been brokenפַּטִּישׁa hammerכׇּל־הָאָרֶץall the earthאֵיךְhowהָיְתָהwasלְשַׁמָּהdesolateבָּבֶלBabylonבַּגּוֹיִם׃among the nations

    How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!

24. 24

    יָקֹשְׁתִּיI set a trapלָךְto youוְגַם־נִלְכַּדְתְּand also you were caughtבָּבֶלBabylonוְאַתְּand youלֹאnotיָדָעַתְּyou knewנִמְצֵאתyou were foundוְגַם־נִתְפַּשְׂתְּand also you were caughtכִּיbecauseבַיהֹוָהagainst the LORDהִתְגָּרִית׃you engaged in strife

    I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD.

25. 25

    פָּתַחopenedיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־אוֹצָרוֹhis storehouseוַיּוֹצֵאand has brought forthאֶת־כְּלֵיvessels ofזַעְמוֹHis-indignationכִּי־מְלָאכָהbecause a workהִיאit isלַאדֹנָיto the LordיֱהֹוִהGODצְבָאוֹתof Hostsבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofכַּשְׂדִּים׃Chaldeans

    The LORD hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of the Lord GOD of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans.

26. 26

    בֹּאוּ־לָהּcome against herמִקֵּץfrom the borderפִּתְחוּopenמַאֲבֻסֶיהָits granariesסׇלּוּהָcast her upכְמוֹ־עֲרֵמִיםlike heapsוְהַחֲרִימוּהָand utterly destroy itאַל־תְּהִי־לָהּlet there not be to herשְׁאֵרִית׃remnant of

    Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left.

27. 27

    חִרְבוּkillכׇּל־פָּרֶיהָall its young bullsיֵרְדוּthey should march downלַטָּבַחto the slaughterהוֹיwoeעֲלֵיהֶםupon themכִּי־בָאthat cameיוֹמָםtheir dayעֵתtimeפְּקֻדָּתָם׃their punishment

    Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation.

28. 28

    קוֹלthe voice ofנָסִיםfledוּפְלֵטִיםand escapeesמֵאֶרֶץfrom the land ofבָּבֶלBabylonלְהַגִּידto declareבְּצִיּוֹןin Zionאֶת־נִקְמַתthe vengeance ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵינוּour Godנִקְמַתthe vengeance ofהֵיכָלוֹ׃his temple

    The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple.

29. 29

    הַשְׁמִיעוּtellאֶל־בָּבֶלto Babylonרַבִּיםmanyכׇּל־דֹּרְכֵיall who bendקֶשֶׁתa bowחֲנוּencampעָלֶיהָupon itסָבִיבall aroundאַל־יְהִי־[לָהּ]let there not be to herפְּלֵיטָהthe escaped remnantשַׁלְּמוּ־לָהּrepay itכְּפׇעֳלָהּaccording to her deedsכְּכֹלaccording to allאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשְׂתָהdidעֲשׂוּ־לָהּdo to herכִּיforאֶל־יְהֹוָהto the LORDזָדָהshe has been proudאֶל־קְדוֹשׁunto the Holy-One ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.

30. 30

    לָכֵןthereforeיִפְּלוּshall fallבַחוּרֶיהָits young menבִּרְחֹבֹתֶיהָin its open placesוְכׇל־אַנְשֵׁיand all the men ofמִלְחַמְתָּהּits warיִדַּמּוּshall be cut offבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃says the LORD

    Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD.

31. 31

    הִנְנִיbehold Iאֵלֶיךָto youזָדוֹןO arrogant oneנְאֻם־אֲדֹנָיsays LordיֱהֹוִהGODצְבָאוֹתof Hostsכִּיforבָּאcameיוֹמְךָyour dayעֵתtimeפְּקַדְתִּיךָ׃when I visit you

    Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.

32. 32

    וְכָשַׁלand he will stumbleזָדוֹןthe arrogant oneוְנָפַלand shall fallוְאֵיןand there is noלוֹto himמֵקִיםraising upוְהִצַּתִּיand I will kindleאֵשׁfireבְּעָרָיוin its citiesוְאׇכְלָהand shall devourכׇּל־סְבִיבֹתָיו׃all around him

    And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.

33. 33

    כֹּהthusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDצְבָאוֹתof Hostsעֲשׁוּקִיםoppressedבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelוּבְנֵי־יְהוּדָהand sons of Judahיַחְדָּוtogetherוְכׇל־שֹׁבֵיהֶםand all their captorsהֶחֱזִיקוּthey heldבָםin themמֵאֲנוּthey refusedשַׁלְּחָם׃to let go them

    Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go.

34. 34

    גֹּאֲלָםtheir Redeemerחָזָקstrongיְהֹוָהthe LORDצְבָאוֹתof Hostsשְׁמוֹhis nameרִיבsurelyיָרִיבshall pleadאֶת־רִיבָםtheir disputationלְמַעַןin order thatהִרְגִּיעַto give rest toאֶת־הָאָרֶץthe landוְהִרְגִּיזand to cause disquietלְיֹשְׁבֵיto the inhabitants ofבָבֶל׃Babylon

    Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

35. 35

    חֶרֶבthe sword ofעַל־כַּשְׂדִּיםupon Chaldeansנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDוְאֶל־יֹשְׁבֵיand inhabitants ofבָבֶלBabylonוְאֶל־שָׂרֶיהָand its princesוְאֶל־חֲכָמֶיהָ׃and its wise men

    A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.

36. 36

    חֶרֶבthe sword ofאֶל־הַבַּדִּיםupon the liarsוְנֹאָלוּand they will become foolsחֶרֶבthe sword ofאֶל־גִּבּוֹרֶיהָto its warriorsוָחָתּוּ׃and they will be shattered

    A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.

37. 37

    חֶרֶבthe sword ofאֶל־סוּסָיוto their horsesוְאֶל־רִכְבּוֹand upon his chariotsוְאֶל־כׇּל־הָעֶרֶבand upon all the mingled peopleאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּתוֹכָהּin its midstוְהָיוּthen they shall beלְנָשִׁיםfor womenחֶרֶבthe sword ofאֶל־אוֹצְרֹתֶיהָto its treasuriesוּבֻזָּזוּ׃and they will be plundered

    A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed.

38. 38

    חֹרֶבa droughtאֶל־מֵימֶיהָto its waterוְיָבֵשׁוּand they will dry upכִּיforאֶרֶץthe land ofפְּסִלִיםidolsהִיאit isוּבָאֵימִיםand in terrorsיִתְהֹלָלוּ׃they will act like mad people

    A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.

39. 39

    לָכֵןthereforeיֵשְׁבוּdwell shallצִיִּיםwild beasts of the desertאֶת־אִיִּיםthe wild beasts of the islandsוְיָשְׁבוּand shall dwellבָהּin itבְּנוֹתthe daughters ofיַעֲנָהthe owlוְלֹא־תֵשֵׁבand not shall it be inhabitedעוֹדany moreלָנֶצַחforeverוְלֹאand notתִשְׁכּוֹןit will settleעַד־דּוֹרfrom generationוָדֹר׃and a generation

    Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.

40. 40

    כְּמַהְפֵּכַתas the overthrow ofאֱלֹהִיםGodאֶת־סְדֹםSodomוְאֶת־עֲמֹרָהand Gomorrahוְאֶת־שְׁכֵנֶיהָand its neighborsנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDלֹא־יֵשֵׁבnot remainedשָׁםthereאִישׁa manוְלֹא־יָגוּרand not shall dwellבָּהּin itבֶּן־אָדָם׃son of man

    As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.

41. 41

    הִנֵּהbeholdעַםpeopleבָּאshall comeמִצָּפוֹןfrom the northוְגוֹיand nationגָּדוֹלgreatוּמְלָכִיםand kingsרַבִּיםmanyיֵעֹרוּthey will be rousedמִיַּרְכְּתֵי־אָרֶץ׃from the innermost parts of the earth

    Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.

42. 42

    קֶשֶׁתa bowוְכִידֹןand javelinיַחֲזִיקוּthey shall holdאַכְזָרִיcruelהֵמָּהtheyוְלֹאand notיְרַחֵמוּshall they show mercyקוֹלָםtheir voicesכַּיָּםlike the seaיֶהֱמֶהshall roarוְעַל־סוּסִיםand upon horsesיִרְכָּבוּthey rideעָרוּךְlined upכְּאִישׁas a manלַמִּלְחָמָהto the warעָלַיִךְupon youבַּת־בָּבֶל׃daughter of Babylon

    They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.

43. 43

    שָׁמַעheardמֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶלking of Babylonאֶת־שִׁמְעָםtheir reportוְרָפוּand have grown feebleיָדָיוhis handsצָרָהafflictionהֶחֱזִיקַתְהוּit took hold of himחִילpangsכַּיּוֹלֵדָה׃as the woman in travail

    The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.

44. 44

    הִנֵּהbeholdכְּאַרְיֵהas a lionיַעֲלֶהhe shall come upמִגְּאוֹןfrom the thickets ofהַיַּרְדֵּןthe Jordanאֶל־נְוֵהto the abode ofאֵיתָןfirmכִּי־אַרְגִּעָהbecause in a moment[אֲרִיצֵם]I will cause to run themמֵעָלֶיהָfrom on herוּמִיand whosoבָחוּרchosenאֵלֶיהָto herאֶפְקֹדI will appointכִּיbecauseמִיwhoכָמוֹנִיlike meוּמִיand whosoיוֹעִדֶנִּיwill he summon meוּמִי־זֶהand whoso thisרֹעֶהshepherdאֲשֶׁרwhichיַעֲמֹדshall standלְפָנָי׃before Me

    Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

45. 45

    לָכֵןthereforeשִׁמְעוּhearעֲצַת־יְהֹוָהthe plan of the LORDאֲשֶׁרwhichיָעַץhe counseledאֶל־בָבֶלto Babylonוּמַחְשְׁבוֹתָיוand his purposesאֲשֶׁרwhichחָשַׁבhe thoughtאֶל־אֶרֶץto the land ofכַּשְׂדִּיםChaldeansאִם־לֹאif notיִסְחָבוּםthey will drag away themצְעִירֵיthe least ofהַצֹּאןthe flockאִם־לֹאif notיַשִּׁיםshall be appalledעֲלֵיהֶםupon themנָוֶה׃a habitation

    Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them.

46. 46

    מִקּוֹלat the voice ofנִתְפְּשָׂהit has been capturedבָבֶלBabylonנִרְעֲשָׁהis movedהָאָרֶץthe earthוּזְעָקָהand a cry of distressבַּגּוֹיִםamong the nationsנִשְׁמָע׃is heard

    At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.
