   The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, which were carried away captive unto Babylon.

   And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, The LORD thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place.

3. 3

   וַיָּבֵאvay/ya/VEand has brought itוַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand didיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasדִּבֵּרdib/BERHe saidכִּי־חֲטָאתֶםki-cha/ta/TEMfor you have sinnedלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaiagainst the LORDוְלֹא־שְׁמַעְתֶּםve/LO-she/ma/TEMand have not obeyedבְּקוֹלוֹbe/ko/LOHis voiceוְהָיָהve/ha/YAtherefore has comeלָכֶםla/KHEMon you(דבר)davar[הַדָּבָר]had/da/VARthingהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

   Now the LORD hath brought it, and done according as he hath said: because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.

   And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before thee: whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go, thither go.

   Now while he was not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a reward, and let him go.

   Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

   וַיִּשְׁמְעוּvay/yish/me/Unow when heardכׇל־שָׂרֵיkhol-sa/REall the commanders ofהַחֲיָלִיםha/cha/ya/LIMthe forcesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereבַּשָּׂדֶהbas/sa/DEin the fieldהֵמָּהHEM/matheyוְאַנְשֵׁיהֶםve/an/she/HEMand their menכִּי־הִפְקִידki-hif/KIDthat had appointedמֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶלME/lekh-Ba/VELking of Babylonאֶת־גְּדַלְיָהוּet-Ge/dal/YA/huGedaliahבֶן־אֲחִיקָםven-A/chi/KAMson of Ahikamבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landוְכִיve/KHIand thatהִפְקִידhif/KIDhad committedאִתּוֹit/TOwith himאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenוְנָשִׁיםve/na/SHIMand womenוָטָףva/TAFand childrenוּמִדַּלַּתu/mid/dal/LATand of the poorest ofהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landמֵאֲשֶׁרme/a/SHERof those whoלֹא־הׇגְלוּlo-hog/LUhad not been carried captiveבָּבֶלָה׃ba/VE/lato Babylon

   Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon;

   Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.

   וַיִּשָּׁבַעvay/yish/sha/VAand sworeלָהֶםla/HEMto themגְּדַלְיָהוּGe/dal/YA/huGedaliahבֶן־אֲחִיקָםven-A/chi/KAMson of Ahikamבֶּן־שָׁפָןben-Sha/FANson of Shaphanוּלְאַנְשֵׁיהֶםu/le/an/she/HEMand to their menלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאַל־תִּירְאוּal-ti/re/Udo not be afraidמֵעֲבוֹדme/a/VODto serveהַכַּשְׂדִּיםhak/Kas/DIMthe Chaldeansשְׁבוּshe/VUdwellבָאָרֶץva/A/retsin the landוְעִבְדוּve/iv/DUand serveאֶת־מֶלֶךְet-ME/lekhthe king ofבָּבֶלBa/VELBabylonוְיִיטַבve/yi/TAVand it will be wellלָכֶם׃la/KHEMto you

   And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

    וַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iהִנְנִיhin/NIbehold Iיֹשֵׁבyo/SHEVwill dwellבַּמִּצְפָּהbam/Mits/PAat Mizpahלַעֲמֹדla/a/MODto standלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהַכַּשְׂדִּיםhak/Kas/DIMthe Chaldeansאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoיָבֹאוּya/VO/ucomeאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuto usוְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMbut youאִסְפוּis/FUgatherיַיִןYA/yinwineוְקַיִץve/KA/yitsand summer fruitוְשֶׁמֶןve/SHE/menand oilוְשִׂמוּve/SI/muand store themבִּכְלֵיכֶםbikh/le/KHEMin your vesselsוּשְׁבוּu/she/VUand dwellבְּעָרֵיכֶםbe/a/re/KHEMin your citiesאֲשֶׁר־תְּפַשְׂתֶּם׃a/SHER-te/fas/TEMthat you have taken

    As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.

    וְגַםve/GAMand alsoכׇּל־הַיְּהוּדִיםkol-Hay/ye/hu/DIMall the Jewsאֲשֶׁר־בְּמוֹאָבa/SHER-Be/mo/AVwho were in Moabוּבִבְנֵי־עַמּוֹןu/Viv/NE-am/MONand among the sons of Ammonוּבֶאֱדוֹםu/Ve/e/DOMand in Edomוַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand who wereבְּכׇל־הָאֲרָצוֹתbe/KHOL-ha/a/ra/TSOTin all the landsשָׁמְעוּsha/me/Uthey heardכִּי־נָתַןki-na/TANthat had leftמֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶלME/lekh-Ba/VELking of Babylonשְׁאֵרִיתshe/e/RITa remnantלִיהוּדָהlI/hu/DAto Judahוְכִיve/KHIand thatהִפְקִידhif/KIDhe had appointedעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMover themאֶת־גְּדַלְיָהוּet-Ge/dal/YA/huGedaliahבֶּן־אֲחִיקָםben-A/chi/KAMson of Ahikamבֶּן־שָׁפָן׃ben-Sha/FANson of Shaphan

    Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan;

    וַיָּשֻׁבוּvay/ya/SHU/vuand they returnedכׇל־הַיְּהוּדִיםkhol-Hay/ye/hu/DIMall the Jewsמִכׇּל־הַמְּקֹמוֹתmik/KOL-ham/me/ko/MOTfrom all the placesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERto whichנִדְּחוּ־שָׁםnid/de/CHU-shamthey had been drivenוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameאֶרֶץ־יְהוּדָהE/rets-Ye/hu/DAto the land of Judahאֶל־גְּדַלְיָהוּel-Ge/dal/YA/huto Gedaliahהַמִּצְפָּתָהham/Mits/PA/tato Mizpahוַיַּאַסְפוּvay/ya/as/FUand gatheredיַיִןYA/yinwineוָקַיִץva/KA/yitsand summer fruitהַרְבֵּהhar/BEmuchמְאֹד׃me/ODvery

    Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.

    וְיוֹחָנָןve/Yo/cha/NANand Johananבֶּן־קָרֵחַben-Ka/RE/achson of Kareahוְכׇל־שָׂרֵיve/KHOL-sa/REand all the commanders ofהַחֲיָלִיםha/cha/ya/LIMthe forcesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereבַּשָּׂדֶהbas/sa/DEin the fieldבָּאוּBA/ucameאֶל־גְּדַלְיָהוּel-Ge/dal/YA/huto Gedaliahהַמִּצְפָּתָה׃ham/Mits/PA/tato Mizpah

    Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himהֲיָדֹעַha/ya/DO/aknowתֵּדַעte/DAdo you knowכִּיkithatבַּעֲלִיסBa/a/LISBaalisמֶלֶךְME/lekhthe king ofבְּנֵי־עַמּוֹןbe/NE-am/MONsons of Ammonשָׁלַחsha/LACHsentאֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵאלet-Yish/ma/ELIshmaelבֶּן־נְתַנְיָהben-Ne/tan/YAson of Nethaniahלְהַכֹּתְךָle/hak/kot/KHAto strike youנָפֶשׁNA/feshlifeוְלֹא־הֶאֱמִיןve/LO-he/e/MINbut did not believeלָהֶםla/HEMto themגְּדַלְיָהוּGe/dal/YA/huGedaliahבֶּן־אֲחִיקָם׃ben-A/chi/KAMson of Ahikam

    And said unto him, Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay thee? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.

    וְיוֹחָנָןve/Yo/cha/NANand Johananבֶּן־קָרֵחַben-Ka/RE/achson of Kareahאָמַרa/MARsaidאֶל־גְּדַלְיָהוּel-Ge/dal/YA/huto Gedaliahבַסֵּתֶרvas/SE/tersecretlyבַּמִּצְפָּהbam/Mits/PAat Mizpahלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאֵלְכָהel/KHAI will goנָּאnanowוְאַכֶּהve/ak/KEand strikeאֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵאלet-Yish/ma/ELIshmaelבֶּן־נְתַנְיָהben-Ne/tan/YAson of Nethaniahוְאִישׁve/ISHand anyoneלֹאlonotיֵדָעye/DAshall knowלָמָּהLAM/mawhyיַכֶּכָּהyak/KEK/kashould he strike youנֶּפֶשׁNE/feshlifeוְנָפֹצוּve/na/FO/tsuso that would be scatteredכׇּל־יְהוּדָהkol-Ye/hu/DAall Judahהַנִּקְבָּצִיםhan/nik/ba/TSIMwho are gatheredאֵלֶיךָe/LE/khato youוְאָבְדָהve/a/ve/DAand would perishשְׁאֵרִיתshe/e/RITremnant ofיְהוּדָה׃Ye/hu/DAJudah

    Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish?

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidגְּדַלְיָהוּGe/dal/YA/huGedaliahבֶן־אֲחִיקָםven-A/chi/KAMson of Ahikamאֶל־יוֹחָנָןel-Yo/cha/NANto Johananבֶּן־קָרֵחַben-Ka/RE/achson of Kareahאַל־[תַּעֲשֵׂה]al-ta/a/SEdo not do(תעש)tshאֶת־הַדָּבָרet-had/da/VARthe thingהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכִּי־שֶׁקֶרki-SHE/kerfor falselyאַתָּהat/TAyouדֹבֵרdo/VERspeakאֶל־יִשְׁמָעֵאל׃el-Yish/ma/ELabout Ishmael

    But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.
