    Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;

    אַחֲרֵיafterצֵאתhad departedיְכׇנְיָה־הַמֶּלֶךְJeconiah the kingוְהַגְּבִירָהand the queen motherוְהַסָּרִיסִיםand the officersשָׂרֵיthe princes ofיְהוּדָהJudahוִירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםand Jerusalemוְהֶחָרָשׁand the craftsmenוְהַמַּסְגֵּרand the smithsמִירוּשָׁלָ͏ִם׃from Jerusalem

    (After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;)

    בְּיַדin the hand ofאֶלְעָשָׂהEleasahבֶן־שָׁפָןson of Shaphanוּגְמַרְיָהand Gemariahבֶּן־חִלְקִיָּהson of HilkiahאֲשֶׁרwhichשָׁלַחsentצִדְקִיָּהZedekiahמֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָהking of Judahאֶל־נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּרto Nebuchadnezzarמֶלֶךְthe king ofבָּבֶלBabylonבָּבֶלָהinto Babylonלֵאמֹר׃saying

    By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying,

    כֹּהthusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDצְבָאוֹתof Hostsאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלְכׇל־הַגּוֹלָהto all that are carried away captivesאֲשֶׁר־הִגְלֵיתִיwhom I have caused to be carried awayמִירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםfrom Jerusalemבָּבֶלָה׃into Babylon

    Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon;

    בְּנוּbuildבָתִּיםhousesוְשֵׁבוּand dwell in themוְנִטְעוּand plantגַנּוֹתgardensוְאִכְלוּand eatאֶת־פִּרְיָן׃the fruit of them

    Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;

    קְחוּtakeנָשִׁיםwomenוְהוֹלִידוּand begetבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹתand daughtersוּקְחוּand takeלִבְנֵיכֶםyour sonsנָשִׁיםwomenוְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיכֶםand your daughtersתְּנוּgiveלַאֲנָשִׁיםto husbandsוְתֵלַדְנָהthat they may bearבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹתand daughtersוּרְבוּ־שָׁםthat you may be increased thereוְאַל־תִּמְעָטוּ׃and not diminished

    Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.

    וְדִרְשׁוּand seekאֶת־שְׁלוֹםthe peace ofהָעִירthe cityאֲשֶׁרwhichהִגְלֵיתִיI have caused to be carried away captivesאֶתְכֶםyouשָׁמָּהthereוְהִתְפַּלְלוּand prayבַעֲדָהּfor itאֶל־יְהֹוָהto the LORDכִּיbecauseבִשְׁלוֹמָהּin its peaceיִהְיֶהshall beלָכֶםto youשָׁלוֹם׃peace

    And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

    כִּיforכֹהthusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDצְבָאוֹתof Hostsאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאַל־יַשִּׁיאוּlet not deceiveלָכֶםto youנְבִיאֵיכֶםyour prophetsאֲשֶׁר־בְּקִרְבְּכֶםthat are in the midst of youוְקֹסְמֵיכֶםand your divinersוְאַל־תִּשְׁמְעוּand do not you hearkenאֶל־חֲלֹמֹתֵיכֶםto your dreamsאֲשֶׁרwhichאַתֶּםyou areמַחְלְמִים׃you encourage them to dream

    For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

    כִּיforבְשֶׁקֶרfalselyהֵםtheyנִבְּאִיםthey prophesyלָכֶםto youבִּשְׁמִיin my nameלֹאnotשְׁלַחְתִּיםI sent themנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃says the LORD

    For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD.

    כִּי־כֹהbecause thusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDכִּיforלְפִיthat afterמְלֹאתare accomplishedלְבָבֶלat BabylonשִׁבְעִיםseventyשָׁנָהyearsאֶפְקֹדI will take heed ofאֶתְכֶםyouוַהֲקִמֹתִיand performעֲלֵיכֶםtowards youאֶת־דְּבָרִיmy wordהַטּוֹבthe goodלְהָשִׁיבin causing to returnאֶתְכֶםyouאֶל־הַמָּקוֹםunto the placeהַזֶּה׃this

    For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

    כִּיforאָנֹכִיIיָדַעְתִּיI knowאֶת־הַמַּחֲשָׁבֹתthe plansאֲשֶׁרwhichאָנֹכִיIחֹשֵׁבI thinkעֲלֵיכֶםtowards youנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDמַחְשְׁבוֹתthoughts ofשָׁלוֹםpeaceוְלֹאand notלְרָעָהfor evilלָתֵתto giveלָכֶםto youאַחֲרִיתa futureוְתִקְוָה׃and hope

    For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

  12. 12

    וּקְרָאתֶםthen shall you call uponאֹתִיmeוַהֲלַכְתֶּםand you will goוְהִתְפַּלַּלְתֶּםand prayאֵלָיunto meוְשָׁמַעְתִּיand I will hearkenאֲלֵיכֶם׃unto you

    Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

    וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּםand you shall seekאֹתִיmeוּמְצָאתֶםand find meכִּיforתִדְרְשֻׁנִיyou shall search for meבְּכׇל־לְבַבְכֶם׃in all your hearts

    And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

  14. 14

    וְנִמְצֵאתִיand I will let myself be foundלָכֶםto youנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDוְשַׁבְתִּיand I will restoreאֶת־[שְׁבוּתְכֶם]you from your captivityוְקִבַּצְתִּיand I will gatherאֶתְכֶםyouמִכׇּל־הַגּוֹיִםfrom all the nationsוּמִכׇּל־הַמְּקוֹמוֹתand from all the regionsאֲשֶׁרwhichהִדַּחְתִּיI have drivenאֶתְכֶםyouשָׁםthereנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDוַהֲשִׁבֹתִיand I will bring backאֶתְכֶםyouאֶל־הַמָּקוֹםunto the placeאֲשֶׁר־הִגְלֵיתִיfrom which I caused to be driven awayאֶתְכֶםyouמִשָּׁם׃from there

    And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

    כִּיbecauseאֲמַרְתֶּםyou have saidהֵקִיםhas raised upלָנוּto usיְהֹוָהthe LORDנְבִאִיםprophetsבָּבֶלָה׃in Babylon

    Because ye have said, The LORD hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;

  16. 16

    כִּי־כֹהbecause thusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְof the kingהַיּוֹשֵׁבthat sitsאֶל־כִּסֵּאupon the throne ofדָוִדDavidוְאֶל־כׇּל־הָעָםand of all the peopleהַיּוֹשֵׁבthat sitsבָּעִירin the cityהַזֹּאתthisאֲחֵיכֶםyour brethrenאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־יָצְאוּdid not go outאִתְּכֶםwith youבַּגּוֹלָה׃into captivity

    Know that thus saith the LORD of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;

    כֹּהthusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDצְבָאוֹתof Hostsהִנְנִיbehold IמְשַׁלֵּחַI will sendבָּםin themאֶת־הַחֶרֶבthe swordאֶת־הָרָעָבthe famineוְאֶת־הַדָּבֶרand the pestilenceוְנָתַתִּיand will makeאוֹתָםthemכַּתְּאֵנִיםlike the figsהַשֹּׁעָרִיםvileאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־תֵאָכַלְנָהnot they will be eatenמֵרֹעַ׃they are so bad

    Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.

  18. 18

    וְרָדַפְתִּיand I will persecuteאַחֲרֵיהֶםafter themבַּחֶרֶבwith the swordבָּרָעָבwith the famineוּבַדָּבֶרand by the pestilenceוּנְתַתִּיםand I will give them(לזועה)[לְזַעֲוָה]into a terrorלְכֹלfor allמַמְלְכוֹתthe kingdoms ofהָאָרֶץthe earthלְאָלָהto be a curseוּלְשַׁמָּהand an astonishmentוְלִשְׁרֵקָהand a hissingוּלְחֶרְפָּהand a reproachבְּכׇל־הַגּוֹיִםin all the nationsאֲשֶׁר־הִדַּחְתִּיםwhere I have driven themשָׁם׃there

    And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:

  19. 19

    תַּחַתbecauseאֲשֶׁר־לֹא־שָׁמְעוּwhich not they heardאֶל־דְּבָרַיto my wordsנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDאֲשֶׁרwhichשָׁלַחְתִּיI sentאֲלֵיהֶםto themאֶת־עֲבָדַיby my servantsהַנְּבִאִיםthe prophetsהַשְׁכֵּםsending from morningוְשָׁלֹחַtill nightוְלֹאand notשְׁמַעְתֶּםwould you hearנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃says the LORD

    Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the LORD, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the LORD.

    וְאַתֶּםand youשִׁמְעוּhearדְבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDכׇּל־הַגּוֹלָהall you of the captivityאֲשֶׁר־שִׁלַּחְתִּיwhich I have sentמִירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםfrom Jerusalemבָּבֶלָה׃into Babylon

    Hear ye therefore the word of the LORD, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon:

  21. 21

    כֹּה־אָמַרthus saysיְהֹוָהthe LORDצְבָאוֹתof Hostsאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֶל־אַחְאָבof Ahabבֶּן־קוֹלָיָהson of Kolaiahוְאֶל־צִדְקִיָּהוּand Zedekiahבֶן־מַעֲשֵׂיָהson of Maaseiahהַנִּבְּאִיםwho prophesyלָכֶםto youבִּשְׁמִיin my nameשָׁקֶרa lieהִנְנִיbehold IנֹתֵןI will deliverאֹתָםthemבְּיַדin the hand ofנְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּרNebuchadnezzarמֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶלking of Babylonוְהִכָּםand he shall slay themלְעֵינֵיכֶם׃before your eyes

    Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

    וְלֻקַּחand shall be taken upמֵהֶםof themקְלָלָהa curseלְכֹלfor allגָּלוּתthe captivity ofיְהוּדָהJudahאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּבָבֶלin Babylonלֵאמֹרsayingיְשִׂמְךָmake youיְהֹוָהthe LORDכְּצִדְקִיָּהוּlike Zedekiahוּכְאֶחָבand like Ahabאֲשֶׁר־קָלָםwhom roastedמֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶלking of Babylonבָּאֵשׁ׃by fire

    And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

  23. 23

    יַעַןbecauseאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשׂוּthey didנְבָלָהbasenessבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלin Israelוַיְנַאֲפוּand they committed adulteryאֶת־נְשֵׁיwith the wives ofרֵעֵיהֶםtheir neighborsוַיְדַבְּרוּand spokeדָבָרwordsבִּשְׁמִיin my nameשֶׁקֶרlyingאֲשֶׁרwhichלוֹאnotצִוִּיתִםI commanded themוְאָנֹכִיyet I[הַיּוֹדֵעַ]he who knowsוָעֵדand a witnessנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃says the LORD

    Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the LORD.

    וְאֶל־שְׁמַעְיָהוּand to Shemaiahהַנֶּחֱלָמִיthe Nehelamiteתֹּאמַרyou shall speakלֵאמֹר׃saying

    Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,

  25. 25

    כֹּה־אָמַרthus saysיְהֹוָהthe LORDצְבָאוֹתof Hostsאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלֵאמֹרsayingיַעַןbecauseאֲשֶׁרwhichאַתָּהyouשָׁלַחְתָּyou sentבְשִׁמְכָהin your nameסְפָרִיםlettersאֶל־כׇּל־הָעָםto all the peopleאֲשֶׁרwhichבִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםin Jerusalemוְאֶל־צְפַנְיָהand Zephaniahבֶן־מַעֲשֵׂיָהson of Maaseiahהַכֹּהֵןthe priestוְאֶלand toכׇּל־הַכֹּהֲנִיםall the priestsלֵאמֹר׃saying

    Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

    יְהֹוָהthe LORDנְתָנְךָhas made youכֹהֵןa priestתַּחַתin the place ofיְהוֹיָדָעJehoiadaהַכֹּהֵןthe priestלִהְיוֹתto beפְּקִדִיםofficersבֵּיתin the house ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDלְכׇל־אִישׁfor every manמְשֻׁגָּעis madוּמִתְנַבֵּאand acts the prophetוְנָתַתָּהthat you shouldst putאֹתוֹhimאֶל־הַמַּהְפֶּכֶתin the stocksוְאֶל־הַצִּינֹק׃and in the collar

    The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.

  27. 27

    וְעַתָּהand nowלָמָּהwhyלֹאnotגָעַרְתָּhave you rebukedבְּיִרְמְיָהוּJeremiahהָעַנְּתֹתִיthe Anathothiteהַמִּתְנַבֵּאwho acts the prophetלָכֶם׃to you

    Now therefore why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you?

  28. 28

    כִּיthatעַל־כֵּןseeing thatשָׁלַחsentאֵלֵינוּunto usבָּבֶלin Babylonלֵאמֹרsayingאֲרֻכָּהis longהִיאthis captivityבְּנוּbuildבָתִּיםhousesוְשֵׁבוּand dwell in themוְנִטְעוּand plantגַנּוֹתgardensוְאִכְלוּand eatאֶת־פְּרִיהֶן׃the fruit of them

    For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

    וַיִּקְרָאand readצְפַנְיָהZephaniahהַכֹּהֵןthe priestאֶת־הַסֵּפֶרthis letterהַזֶּהthisבְּאׇזְנֵיin the ears ofיִרְמְיָהוּJeremiahהַנָּבִיא׃the prophet

    And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

    וַיְהִיand it came to passדְּבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDאֶל־יִרְמְיָהוּto Jeremiahלֵאמֹר׃saying

    Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying,

    שְׁלַחsendעַל־כׇּל־הַגּוֹלָהto all them of the captivityלֵאמֹרsayingכֹּהthusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־שְׁמַעְיָהconcerning Shemaiahהַנֶּחֱלָמִיthe Nehelamiteיַעַןbecauseאֲשֶׁרwhichנִבָּאhas prophesiedלָכֶםto youשְׁמַעְיָהShemaiahוַאֲנִיand IלֹאnotשְׁלַחְתִּיוI sent himוַיַּבְטַחand he caused to trustאֶתְכֶםyouעַל־שָׁקֶר׃in a lie

    Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the LORD concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie:

  32. 32

    לָכֵןthereforeכֹּה־אָמַרthus saysיְהֹוָהthe LORDהִנְנִיbehold IפֹקֵדI will punishעַל־שְׁמַעְיָהupon Shemaiahהַנֶּחֱלָמִיthe Nehelamiteוְעַל־זַרְעוֹand his posterityלֹא־יִהְיֶהthere shall not beלוֹto himאִישׁa manיוֹשֵׁבto dwellבְּתוֹךְ־הָעָםamong the peopleהַזֶּהthisוְלֹא־יִרְאֶהneither shall he beholdבַטּוֹבthe goodאֲשֶׁר־אֲנִיwhat Iעֹשֶׂה־לְעַמִּיwill do for my peopleנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהsays the LORDכִּי־סָרָהbecause rebellionדִבֶּרhe has utteredעַל־יְהֹוָה׃against the LORD

    Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the LORD; because he hath taught rebellion against the LORD.
