   Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

   Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

   קֹדֶשׁKO/deshholy isיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDרֵאשִׁיתre/SHITthe firstfruits ofתְּבוּאָתֹהte/vu/a/TOHis harvestכׇּל־אֹכְלָיוkol-okh/LAYVall who devour himיֶאְשָׁמוּye/SHA/muthey will be held guiltyרָעָהra/Aevilתָּבֹאta/VOwill comeאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃ne/UM-Adonaisays the LORD

   Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.

   Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

   כֹּהkothusאָמַרa/MARsaysיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDמַה־מָּצְאוּma-ma/tse/Uwhat did findאֲבוֹתֵיכֶםa/vo/te/KHEMyour fathersבִּיbiin meעָוֶלA/velwrongכִּיkithatרָחֲקוּra/cha/KUthey have gone farמֵעָלָיme/a/LAYfrom meוַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand they wentאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהַהֶבֶלha/HE/velworthlessnessוַיֶּהְבָּלוּ׃vay/yeh/BA/luand became worthless

   Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

   Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?

   וָאָבִיאva/a/VIand I broughtאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouאֶל־אֶרֶץel-E/retsinto a land ofהַכַּרְמֶלhak/kar/MELplentyלֶאֱכֹלle/e/KHOLto eatפִּרְיָהּpir/YAits fruitוְטוּבָהּve/tu/VAand its good thingsוַתָּבֹאוּvat/ta/VO/uand you cameוַתְּטַמְּאוּvat/te/tam/me/Uand you defiledאֶת־אַרְצִיet-ar/TSImy landוְנַחֲלָתִיve/na/cha/la/TIand my inheritanceשַׂמְתֶּםsam/TEMyou madeלְתוֹעֵבָה׃le/to/e/VAan abomination

   And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.

   הַכֹּהֲנִיםhak/ko/ha/NIMthe priestsלֹאlonotאָמְרוּa/me/RUthey saidאַיֵּהay/YEwhere isיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוְתֹפְשֵׂיve/tof/SEand those who handleהַתּוֹרָהhat/to/RAthe lawלֹאlonotיְדָעוּנִיye/da/U/nidid know meוְהָרֹעִיםve/ha/ro/IMand the shepherdsפָּשְׁעוּPASH/utransgressedבִיviagainst meוְהַנְּבִאִיםve/han/ne/vi/IMand the prophetsנִבְּאוּnib/be/UprophesiedבַבַּעַלVab/BA/alby Baalוְאַחֲרֵיve/a/cha/REand afterלֹא־יוֹעִלוּlo-yo/I/luwhat does not profitהָלָכוּ׃ha/LA/khuthey walked

   The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

   לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeעֹדodstillאָרִיבa/RIVI will contendאִתְּכֶםit/te/KHEMwith youנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהne/UM-Adonaisays the LORDוְאֶת־בְּנֵיve/ET-be/NEand with the sons ofבְנֵיכֶםve/ne/KHEMyour sonsאָרִיב׃a/RIVI will contend

   Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children's children will I plead.

    כִּיkiforעִבְרוּiv/RUcross over toאִיֵּיiy/YEthe coasts ofכִתִּיִּיםKhit/tiy/YIMChittimוּרְאוּu/re/Uand seeוְקֵדָרve/Ke/DARand Kedarשִׁלְחוּshil/CHUsendוְהִתְבּוֹנְנוּve/hit/bon/NUand considerמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyוּרְאוּu/re/Uand seeהֵןhenwhetherהָיְתָהha/ye/TAthere has beenכָּזֹאת׃ka/ZOTsuch a thing

    For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.

    הַהֵימִירha/he/MIRhas changedגּוֹיgoya nationאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMgodsוְהֵמָּהve/HEM/mathough they areלֹאlonotאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMgodsוְעַמִּיve/am/MIand my peopleהֵמִירhe/MIRhas changedכְּבוֹדוֹke/vo/DOits gloryבְּלוֹאbe/LOfor what does notיוֹעִיל׃yo/ILprofit

    Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

    שֹׁמּוּSHOM/mube appalledשָׁמַיִםsha/MA/yimO heavensעַל־זֹאתal-zotat thisוְשַׂעֲרוּve/sa/a/RUand shudderחׇרְבוּchor/VUbe dried upמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃ne/UM-Adonaisays the LORD

    Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.

13. 13

    כִּי־שְׁתַּיִםki-SHTA/yimfor twoרָעוֹתra/OTevilsעָשָׂהa/SAhave committedעַמִּיam/MImy peopleאֹתִיo/TImeעָזְבוּa/ze/VUthey have forsakenמְקוֹרme/KORthe fountain ofמַיִםMA/yimwatersחַיִּיםchay/YIMlivingלַחְצֹבlach/TSOVto hew outלָהֶםla/HEMfor themselvesבֹּארוֹתbo/ROTcisternsבֹּארֹתbo/ROTcisternsנִשְׁבָּרִיםnish/ba/RIMbrokenאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלֹא־יָכִלוּlo-ya/KHI/luthat cannot holdהַמָּיִם׃ham/MA/yimthe water

    For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

14. 14

    הַעֶבֶדha/E/vedis a servantיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelאִם־יְלִידim-ye/LIDor one born inבַּיִתBA/yita houseהוּאhuis heמַדּוּעַmad/DU/awhyהָיָהha/YAhas he becomeלָבַז׃la/VAZplunder

    Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?

15. 15

    עָלָיוa/LAYVover himיִשְׁאֲגוּyish/a/GUroarכְפִרִיםkhe/fi/RIMyoung lionsנָתְנוּna/te/NUthey utterקוֹלָםko/LAMtheir voiceוַיָּשִׁיתוּvay/ya/SHI/tuand they makeאַרְצוֹar/TSOhis landלְשַׁמָּהle/sham/MAa wasteעָרָיוa/RAYVhis cities(נצתה)natsatah[נִצְּתוּ]nits/tse/TUare burnedמִבְּלִיmib/be/LIwithoutיֹשֵׁב׃yo/SHEVinhabitant

    The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.

16. 16

    גַּם־בְּנֵי־נֹףgam-be/NE-Nofalso the sons of Noph[וְתַחְפַּנְחֵס]Ve/tach/pan/CHESand Tahpanhesיִרְעוּךְyir/UKHhave brokenקׇדְקֹד׃kod/KODthe crown of your head

    Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.

17. 17

    הֲלוֹא־זֹאתha/LO-zothas not thisתַּעֲשֶׂה־לָּךְta/a/SE-lakhbrought on yourselfעׇזְבֵךְoz/VEKHby your forsakingאֶת־יְהֹוָהet-Adonaithe LORDאֱלֹהַיִךְe/lo/HA/yikhyour Godבְּעֵתbe/ETwhenמוֹלִכֵךְmo/li/KHEKHHe led youבַּדָּרֶךְ׃bad/DA/rekhby the way

    Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?

18. 18

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowמַה־לָּךְma-lakhwhat have youלְדֶרֶךְle/DE/rekhon the way toמִצְרַיִםMits/RA/yimEgyptלִשְׁתּוֹתlish/TOTto drinkמֵיmethe waters ofשִׁחוֹרShi/CHORShihorוּמַה־לָּךְu/MA-lakhand what have youלְדֶרֶךְle/DE/rekhon the way toאַשּׁוּרAsh/SHURAssyriaלִשְׁתּוֹתlish/TOTto drinkמֵיmethe waters ofנָהָר׃Na/HARthe River

    And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?

19. 19

    תְּיַסְּרֵךְte/yas/se/REKHwill discipline youרָעָתֵךְra/a/TEKHyour wickednessוּמְשֻׁבוֹתַיִךְu/me/shu/vo/TA/yikhand your backslidingsתּוֹכִחֻךְto/khi/CHUKHwill reprove youוּדְעִיu/de/Iand knowוּרְאִיu/re/Iand seeכִּי־רַעki-rathat it is evilוָמָרva/MARand bitterעׇזְבֵךְoz/VEKHthat you forsakeאֶת־יְהֹוָהet-Adonaithe LORDאֱלֹהָיִךְe/lo/HA/yikhyour Godוְלֹאve/LOand that notפַחְדָּתִיfach/da/TImy fearאֵלַיִךְe/LA/yikhis in youנְאֻם־אֲדֹנָיne/UM-a/do/NAYsays the LordיֱהֹוִהAdonaiGODצְבָאוֹת׃tse/va/OTof hosts

    Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

20. 20

    כִּיkibecauseמֵעוֹלָםme/o/LAMof oldשָׁבַרְתִּיsha/VAR/tiI have brokenעֻלֵּךְul/LEKHyour yokeנִתַּקְתִּיnit/TAK/tiand burstמוֹסְרוֹתַיִךְmos/ro/TA/yikhyour bandsוַתֹּאמְרִיvat/to/me/RIand you saidלֹאlonot[אֶעֱבוֹר]e/e/VORI will transgressכִּיkiyetעַל־כׇּל־גִּבְעָהal-kol-giv/Aon every hillגְּבֹהָהge/vo/HAhighוְתַחַתve/TA/chatand underכׇּל־עֵץkol-etsevery treeרַעֲנָןra/a/NANgreenאַתְּattyouצֹעָהtso/Alie downזֹנָה׃zo/NAplaying the harlot

    For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.

21. 21

    וְאָנֹכִיve/a/no/KHIyet Iנְטַעְתִּיךְne/ta/TIKHhad planted youשׂוֹרֵקso/REKa choice vineכֻּלֹּהkul/LOwhollyזֶרַעZE/raa seed ofאֱמֶתe/METtruthוְאֵיךְve/EKHand howנֶהְפַּכְתְּneh/PAKHThave you turnedלִיlito me intoסוּרֵיsu/REthe degenerate plant ofהַגֶּפֶןhag/GE/fenthe vineנׇכְרִיָּה׃nokh/riy/YAa foreign

    Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?

22. 22

    כִּיkithoughאִם־תְּכַבְּסִיim-te/khab/be/SIyou washבַּנֶּתֶרban/NE/terwith lyeוְתַרְבִּי־לָךְve/tar/BI-lakhand use muchבֹּרִיתbo/RITsoapנִכְתָּםnikh/TAMis markedעֲוֺנֵךְa/vo/NEKHyour iniquityלְפָנַיle/fa/NAYbefore meנְאֻםne/UMsaysאֲדֹנָיa/do/NAYthe Lordיֱהֹוִה׃AdonaiGOD

    For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.

23. 23

    אֵיךְekhhowתֹּאמְרִיto/me/RIcan you sayלֹאlonotנִטְמֵאתִיnit/ME/tiI have made myself uncleanאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהַבְּעָלִיםhab/Be/a/LIMthe Baalimלֹאlonotהָלַכְתִּיha/LAKH/tiI wentרְאִיre/Iseeדַרְכֵּךְdar/KEKHyour wayבַּגַּיְאbag/GAYin the valleyדְּעִיde/Iknowמֶהmewhatעָשִׂיתa/SIThave you doneבִּכְרָהbikh/RAa young camelקַלָּהkal/LAswiftמְשָׂרֶכֶתme/sa/RE/khetrunning aboutדְּרָכֶיהָ׃de/ra/KHE/haher ways

    How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;

24. 24

    פֶּרֶהPE/rea wild donkeyלִמֻּדlim/MUDused toמִדְבָּרmid/BARthe wildernessבְּאַוַּתbe/av/VATin the desire of(נפשו)nafashav[נַפְשָׁהּ]naf/SHAher soulשָׁאֲפָהsha/a/FAshe sniffsרוּחַRU/achthe windתַּאֲנָתָהּta/a/na/TAin her heatמִיmiwhoיְשִׁיבֶנָּהye/shi/VEN/nacan turn her backכׇּל־מְבַקְשֶׁיהָkol-me/vak/SHE/haall who seek herלֹאlonotיִיעָפוּyi/A/fuweary themselvesבְּחׇדְשָׁהּbe/chod/SHAin her monthיִמְצָאוּנְהָ׃yim/tsa/UN/hathey will find her

    A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

25. 25

    מִנְעִיmin/Ikeepרַגְלֵךְrag/LEKHyour footמִיָּחֵףmiy/ya/CHEFfrom being unshod[וּגְרוֹנֵךְ]u/ge/ro/NEKHand your throatמִצִּמְאָהmits/tsim/Afrom thirstוַתֹּאמְרִיvat/to/me/RIbut you saidנוֹאָשׁno/ASHit is hopelessלוֹאlonoכִּי־אָהַבְתִּיki-a/HAV/tifor I have lovedזָרִיםza/RIMstrangersוְאַחֲרֵיהֶםve/a/cha/re/HEMand after themאֵלֵךְ׃e/LEKHI will go

    Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

    כְּבֹשֶׁתke/VO/shetlike the shame ofגַּנָּבgan/NAVa thiefכִּיkiwhenיִמָּצֵאyim/ma/TSEhe is foundכֵּןkensoהֹבִישׁוּho/VI/shuis ashamedבֵּיתbetthe house ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelהֵמָּהHEM/matheyמַלְכֵיהֶםmal/khe/HEMtheir kingsשָׂרֵיהֶםsa/re/HEMtheir princesוְכֹהֲנֵיהֶםve/kho/ha/ne/HEMand their priestsוּנְבִיאֵיהֶם׃u/ne/vi/e/HEMand their prophets

    As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,

27. 27

    אֹמְרִיםom/RIMwho sayלָעֵץla/ETSto a treeאָבִיa/VImy fatherאַתָּהat/TAyou areוְלָאֶבֶןve/la/E/venand to a stoneאַתְּattyou(ילדתני)yaladatanay[יְלִדְתָּנוּ]ye/lid/TA/nuyou gave birth to usכִּי־פָנוּki-fa/NUfor they have turnedאֵלַיe/LAYto meעֹרֶףO/refthe backוְלֹאve/LOand notפָנִיםfa/NIMthe faceוּבְעֵתu/ve/ETbut in the time ofרָעָתָםra/a/TAMtheir troubleיֹאמְרוּyo/me/RUthey sayקוּמָהku/MAariseוְהוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ׃ve/ho/shi/E/nuand save us

    Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.

    וְאַיֵּהve/ay/YEand where isאֱלֹהֶיךָe/lo/HE/khayour godsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעָשִׂיתָa/SI/tayou madeלָּךְlakhfor yourselfיָקוּמוּya/KU/mulet them ariseאִם־יוֹשִׁיעוּךָim-yo/shi/U/khaif they can save youבְּעֵתbe/ETin the time ofרָעָתֶךָra/a/TE/khayour troubleכִּיkiforמִסְפַּרmis/PARthe number ofעָרֶיךָa/RE/khayour citiesהָיוּha/YUareאֱלֹהֶיךָe/lo/HE/khayour godsיְהוּדָה׃Ye/hu/DAO Judah

    But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

29. 29

    לָמָּהLAM/mawhyתָרִיבוּta/RI/vudo you contendאֵלָיe/LAYwith meכֻּלְּכֶםkul/le/KHEMall of youפְּשַׁעְתֶּםpe/sha/TEMyou have rebelledבִּיbiagainst meנְאֻם־יְהֹוָה׃ne/UM-Adonaisays the LORD

    Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD.

30. 30

    לַשָּׁוְאlash/SHAVin vainהִכֵּיתִיhik/KE/tiI have struckאֶת־בְּנֵיכֶםet-be/ne/KHEMyour sonsמוּסָרmu/SARdisciplineלֹאlonoלָקָחוּla/KA/chuthey receivedאָכְלָהa/khe/LAhas devouredחַרְבְּכֶםchar/be/KHEMyour swordנְבִיאֵיכֶםne/vi/e/KHEMyour prophetsכְּאַרְיֵהke/ar/YEas a lionמַשְׁחִית׃mash/CHITdestroying

    In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

31. 31

    הַדּוֹרhad/DORO generationאַתֶּםat/TEMyou areרְאוּre/Useeדְבַר־יְהֹוָהde/VAR-Adonaithe word of the LORDהֲמִדְבָּרha/mid/BARa wildernessהָיִיתִיha/YI/tihave I beenלְיִשְׂרָאֵלle/Yis/ra/ELto IsraelאִםimorאֶרֶץE/retsa land ofמַאְפֵּלְיָהma/pel/YAdarknessמַדּוּעַmad/DU/awhyאָמְרוּa/me/RUdo sayעַמִּיam/MImy peopleרַדְנוּRAD/nuwe roam freeלוֹא־נָבוֹאlo-na/VOwe will not comeעוֹדodany moreאֵלֶיךָ׃e/LE/khato you

    O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

32. 32

    הֲתִשְׁכַּחha/tish/KACHcan forgetבְּתוּלָהbe/tu/LAa virginעֶדְיָהּed/YAher ornamentsכַּלָּהkal/LAa brideקִשֻּׁרֶיהָkish/shu/RE/haher sashesוְעַמִּיve/am/MIand my peopleשְׁכֵחוּנִיshe/khe/CHU/nithey have forgotten meיָמִיםya/MIMdaysאֵיןenwithoutמִסְפָּר׃mis/PARnumber

    Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

    מַה־תֵּיטִבִיma-te/TI/vihow well you directדַרְכֵּךְdar/KEKHyour wayלְבַקֵּשׁle/vak/KESHto seekאַהֲבָהa/ha/VAloveלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeגַּםgamevenאֶת־הָרָעוֹתet-ha/ra/OTthe wicked women(למדתי)lamadatay[לִמַּדְתְּ]lim/MADTyou have taughtאֶת־דְּרָכָיִךְ׃et-de/ra/KHA/yikhyour ways

    Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.

34. 34

    גַּםgamalsoבִּכְנָפַיִךְbikh/na/FA/yikhon your skirtsנִמְצְאוּnim/tse/Uis foundדַּםdamthe blood ofנַפְשׁוֹתnaf/SHOTthe souls ofאֶבְיוֹנִיםev/yo/NIMthe needyנְקִיִּיםne/kiy/YIMinnocentלֹא־בַמַּחְתֶּרֶתlo-vam/mach/TE/retnot in breaking inמְצָאתִיםme/tsa/TIMdid I find themכִּיkibutעַל־כׇּל־אֵלֶּה׃al-kol-EL/leon all these

    Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.

35. 35

    וַתֹּאמְרִיvat/to/me/RIand you saidכִּיkibecauseנִקֵּיתִיnik/KE/tiI am innocentאַךְakhsurelyשָׁבshavhas turnedאַפּוֹap/POHis angerמִמֶּנִּיmim/MEN/nifrom meהִנְנִיhin/NIbehold Iנִשְׁפָּטnish/PATwill enter into judgment withאוֹתָךְo/TAKHyouעַל־אׇמְרֵךְal-om/REKHbecause you sayלֹאlonotחָטָאתִי׃cha/TA/tihave I sinned

    Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

36. 36

    מַה־תֵּזְלִיma-tez/LIwhy do you go aboutמְאֹדme/ODso muchלְשַׁנּוֹתle/shan/NOTto changeאֶת־דַּרְכֵּךְet-dar/KEKHyour wayגַּםgamalsoמִמִּצְרַיִםmim/Mits/RA/yimof Egyptתֵּבֹשִׁיte/VO/shiyou will be ashamedכַּאֲשֶׁר־בֹּשְׁתְּka/a/SHER-boshtas you were ashamedמֵאַשּׁוּר׃me/Ash/SHURof Assyria

    Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

37. 37

    גַּםgamalsoמֵאֵתme/ETfromזֶהzehimתֵּצְאִיtets/Iyou will go outוְיָדַיִךְve/ya/DA/yikhand your handsעַל־רֹאשֵׁךְal-ro/SHEKHupon your headכִּי־מָאַסki-ma/ASfor has rejectedיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבְּמִבְטַחַיִךְbe/miv/ta/CHA/yikhthose you trustוְלֹאve/LOand notתַצְלִיחִיtats/LI/chiyou will prosperלָהֶם׃la/HEMwith them

    Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.
