Jeremiah 18 יִרְמְיָהוּ פרק י״ח

   The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

   קוּםkumariseוְיָרַדְתָּve/ya/rad/TAand go down toבֵּיתbetto the house ofהַיּוֹצֵרhay/yo/TSERthe potterוְשָׁמָּהve/SHAM/maand thereאַשְׁמִיעֲךָash/mi/a/KHAI will cause you to hearאֶת־דְּבָרָי׃et-de/va/RAYmy words

   Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

   וָאֵרֵדva/e/REDthen I went downבֵּיתbetthe house ofהַיּוֹצֵרhay/yo/TSERthe potter[וְהִנֵּה־הוּא]ve/hin/NE-huand behold heעֹשֶׂהo/SEwas makingמְלָאכָהme/la/KHAa workעַל־הָאׇבְנָיִם׃al-ha/ov/NA/yimon the wheel

   Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

   וְנִשְׁחַתve/nish/CHATand was marredהַכְּלִיhak/ke/LIthe vesselאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהוּאhuheעֹשֶׂהo/SEwas makingבַּחֹמֶרba/CHO/merof clayבְּיַדbe/YADin the hand ofהַיּוֹצֵרhay/yo/TSERthe potterוְשָׁבve/SHAVso he againוַיַּעֲשֵׂהוּvay/ya/a/SE/humade itכְּלִיke/LIinto a vesselאַחֵרa/CHERanotherכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasיָשַׁרya/SHARseemed rightבְּעֵינֵיbe/e/NEin the eyes ofהַיּוֹצֵרhay/yo/TSERthe potterלַעֲשׂוֹת׃la/a/SOTto do

   And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passדְבַר־יְהֹוָהde/VAR-Adonaithe word of the LORDאֵלַיe/LAYto meלֵאמוֹר׃le/MORsaying

   Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

   הֲכַיּוֹצֵרha/khay/yo/TSERlike this potterהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלֹא־אוּכַלlo-u/KHALcan I notלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTdoלָכֶםla/KHEMwith youבֵּיתbetO house ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelנְאֻם־יְהֹוָהne/UM-Adonaisays the LORDהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdכַחֹמֶרkha/CHO/merlike clayבְּיַדbe/YADin the hand ofהַיּוֹצֵרhay/yo/TSERthe potterכֵּן־אַתֶּםken-at/TEMso are youבְּיָדִיbe/ya/DIin my handבֵּיתbetO house ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Yis/ra/ELIsrael

   O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

   רֶגַעRE/gaat one momentאֲדַבֵּרa/dab/BERI speakעַל־גּוֹיal-goyconcerning a nationוְעַל־מַמְלָכָהve/AL-mam/la/KHAor concerning a kingdomלִנְתוֹשׁlin/TOSHto pluck upוְלִנְתוֹץve/lin/TOTSand to break downוּלְהַאֲבִיד׃u/le/ha/a/VIDand to destroy

   At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

   וְשָׁבve/SHAVand if turnsהַגּוֹיhag/GOYthe nationהַהוּאha/HUthatמֵרָעָתוֹme/ra/a/TOfrom its evilאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichדִּבַּרְתִּיdib/BAR/tiI have pronouncedעָלָיוa/LAYVagainst itוְנִחַמְתִּיve/ni/cham/TII will relentעַל־הָרָעָהal-ha/ra/Aof the evilאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichחָשַׁבְתִּיcha/SHAV/tiI thoughtלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doלוֹ׃loto it

   If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

   וְרֶגַעve/RE/gaand at another momentאֲדַבֵּרa/dab/BERI speakעַל־גּוֹיal-goyconcerning a nationוְעַל־מַמְלָכָהve/AL-mam/la/KHAor concerning a kingdomלִבְנוֹתliv/NOTto buildוְלִנְטוֹעַ׃ve/lin/TO/aand to plant

   And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

    וְעָשָׂהve/a/SAand if it does(הרעה)harh[הָרַע]ha/RAevilבְּעֵינַיbe/e/NAYin my eyesלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TIso as notשְׁמֹעַshe/MO/ato obeyבְּקוֹלִיbe/ko/LImy voiceוְנִחַמְתִּיve/ni/cham/TIthen I will relentעַל־הַטּוֹבָהal-hat/to/VAof the goodאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichאָמַרְתִּיa/MAR/tiI saidלְהֵיטִיבle/he/TIVto doאוֹתוֹ׃o/TOit

    If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאֱמׇר־נָאe/MOR-naspeak nowאֶל־אִישׁ־יְהוּדָהel-Ish-ye/hu/DAto the men of Judahוְעַל־יוֹשְׁבֵיve/AL-yosh/VEand to the inhabitants ofיְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםYe/ru/sha/LA/yimJerusalemלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingכֹּהkothusאָמַרa/MARsaysיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIIיוֹצֵרyo/TSERam formingעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMagainst youרָעָהra/Aevilוְחֹשֵׁבve/cho/SHEVand devisingעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMagainst youמַחֲשָׁבָהma/cha/sha/VAa planשׁוּבוּSHU/vureturnנָאnanowאִישׁisheachמִדַּרְכּוֹmid/dar/KOfrom his wayהָרָעָהha/ra/Aevilוְהֵיטִיבוּve/he/TI/vuand amendדַרְכֵיכֶםdar/khe/KHEMyour waysוּמַעַלְלֵיכֶם׃u/ma/al/le/KHEMand your deeds

    Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

    וְאָמְרוּve/a/me/RUbut they sayנוֹאָשׁno/ASHit is hopelessכִּי־אַחֲרֵיki-a/cha/REfor afterמַחְשְׁבוֹתֵינוּmach/she/vo/TE/nuour own plansנֵלֵךְne/LEKHwe will walkוְאִישׁve/ISHand eachשְׁרִרוּתshe/ri/RUTthe stubbornness ofלִבּוֹ־הָרָעlib/BO-ha/RAhis evil heartנַעֲשֶׂה׃na/a/SEwe will act

    And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeכֹּהkothusאָמַרa/MARsaysיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDשַׁאֲלוּ־נָאsha/a/LU-naask nowבַּגּוֹיִםbag/go/YIMamong the nationsמִיmiwhoשָׁמַעsha/MAhas heardכָּאֵלֶּהka/EL/lesuch as theseשַׁעֲרֻרִתsha/a/ru/RITa horrible thingעָשְׂתָהa/se/TAhas doneמְאֹדme/ODveryבְּתוּלַתbe/tu/LATthe virgin ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Yis/ra/ELIsrael

    Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

14. 14

    הֲיַעֲזֹבha/ya/a/ZOVdoes leaveמִצּוּרmits/TSURthe rock ofשָׂדַיsa/DAYthe fieldשֶׁלֶגSHE/legthe snow ofלְבָנוֹןLe/va/NONLebanonאִם־יִנָּתְשׁוּim-yin/na/te/SHUor are plucked upמַיִםMA/yimthe watersזָרִיםza/RIMstrangeקָרִיםka/RIMcoldנוֹזְלִים׃noz/LIMflowing

    Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?

15. 15

    כִּי־שְׁכֵחֻנִיki-she/khe/CHU/nifor have forgotten meעַמִּיam/MImy peopleלַשָּׁוְאlash/SHAVto vanityיְקַטֵּרוּye/kat/TE/ruthey burn incenseוַיַּכְשִׁלוּםvay/yakh/shi/LUMand they have made them stumbleבְּדַרְכֵיהֶםbe/dar/khe/HEMin their waysשְׁבִילֵיshe/vi/LEthe paths ofעוֹלָםo/LAMoldלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto walkנְתִיבוֹתne/ti/VOTin pathsדֶּרֶךְDE/rekha wayלֹאlonotסְלוּלָה׃se/lu/LAbuilt up

    Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;

16. 16

    לָשׂוּםla/SUMmakingאַרְצָםar/TSAMtheir own landלְשַׁמָּהle/sham/MAa horror[שְׁרִיקוֹת]she/ri/KOTa hissingעוֹלָםo/LAMperpetualכֹּלkoleveryoneעוֹבֵרo/VERwho passesעָלֶיהָa/LE/haby itיִשֹּׁםyish/SHOMwill be appalledוְיָנִידve/ya/NIDand shakeבְּרֹאשׁוֹ׃be/ro/SHOhis head

    To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.

17. 17

    כְּרוּחַ־קָדִיםke/RU/ach-ka/DIMlike an east windאֲפִיצֵםa/fi/TSEMI will scatter themלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאוֹיֵבo/YEVthe enemyעֹרֶףO/refthe backוְלֹא־פָנִיםve/LO-fa/NIMand not the faceאֶרְאֵםer/EMI will show themבְּיוֹםbe/YOMin the day ofאֵידָם׃e/DAMtheir disaster

    I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

18. 18

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidלְכוּle/KHUcomeוְנַחְשְׁבָהve/nach/she/VAand let us deviseעַל־יִרְמְיָהוּal-Yir/me/YA/huagainst Jeremiahמַחֲשָׁבוֹתma/cha/sha/VOTplansכִּיkiforלֹא־תֹאבַדlo-to/VADwill not perishתּוֹרָהto/RAthe lawמִכֹּהֵןmik/ko/HENfrom the priestוְעֵצָהve/e/TSAand counselמֵחָכָםme/cha/KHAMfrom the wiseוְדָבָרve/da/VARnor the wordמִנָּבִיאmin/na/VIfrom the prophetלְכוּle/KHUcomeוְנַכֵּהוּve/nak/KE/huand let us strike himבַלָּשׁוֹןval/la/SHONwith the tongueוְאַל־נַקְשִׁיבָהve/AL-nak/SHI/vaand let us not listenאֶל־כׇּל־דְּבָרָיו׃el-kol-de/va/RAYVto all of his words

    Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

19. 19

    הַקְשִׁיבָהhak/SHI/valistenיְהֹוָהAdonaiO LORDאֵלָיe/LAYto meוּשְׁמַעu/she/MAand hearלְקוֹלle/KOLthe voice ofיְרִיבָי׃ye/ri/VAYthose who contend with me

    Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

20. 20

    הַיְשֻׁלַּםhay/shul/LAMshould be repaidתַּחַת־טוֹבָהTA/chat-to/VAfor goodרָעָהra/Aevilכִּי־כָרוּki-kha/RUfor they have dugשׁוּחָהshu/CHAa pitלְנַפְשִׁיle/naf/SHIfor my soulזְכֹרze/KHORrememberעׇמְדִיom/DIhow I stoodלְפָנֶיךָle/fa/NE/khabefore Youלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto speakעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMfor themטוֹבָהto/VAgoodלְהָשִׁיבle/ha/SHIVand to turn awayאֶת־חֲמָתְךָet-cha/ma/te/KHAYour wrathמֵהֶם׃me/HEMfrom them

    Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.

21. 21

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeתֵּןtengiveאֶת־בְּנֵיהֶםet-be/ne/HEMtheir sonsלָרָעָבla/ra/AVto famineוְהַגִּרֵםve/hag/gi/REMand pour them outעַל־יְדֵי־חֶרֶבal-ye/DE-CHE/revby the power of the swordוְתִהְיֶנָהve/tih/YE/naand let beנְשֵׁיהֶםne/she/HEMtheir wivesשַׁכֻּלוֹתshak/ku/LOTbereavedוְאַלְמָנוֹתve/al/ma/NOTand widowsוְאַנְשֵׁיהֶםve/an/she/HEMand their menיִהְיוּyih/YUlet beהֲרֻגֵיha/RU/geslain byמָוֶתMA/vetdeathבַּחוּרֵיהֶםba/chu/re/HEMtheir young menמֻכֵּי־חֶרֶבmuk/KE-CHE/revstruck by the swordבַּמִּלְחָמָה׃bam/mil/cha/MAin the battle

    Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

22. 22

    תִּשָּׁמַעtish/sha/MAlet be heardזְעָקָהze/a/KAa cryמִבָּתֵּיהֶםmib/bat/te/HEMfrom their housesכִּי־תָבִיאki-ta/VIwhen You bringעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMon themגְּדוּדge/DUDa troopפִּתְאֹםpit/OMsuddenlyכִּי־כָרוּki-kha/RUfor they have dug(שיחה)shayachah[שׁוּחָה]shu/CHAa pitלְלׇכְדֵנִיle/lokh/DE/nito take meוּפַחִיםu/fa/CHIMand snaresטָמְנוּta/me/NUthey have hiddenלְרַגְלָי׃le/rag/LAYfor my feet

    Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

23. 23

    וְאַתָּהve/at/TAbut YouיְהֹוָהAdonaiO LORDיָדַעְתָּya/DA/taknowאֶת־כׇּל־עֲצָתָםet-kol-a/tsa/TAMall their counselsעָלַיa/LAYagainst meלַמָּוֶתlam/MA/vetfor deathאַל־תְּכַפֵּרal-te/khap/PERdo not atone forעַל־עֲוֺנָםal-a/vo/NAMtheir iniquityוְחַטָּאתָםve/chat/ta/TAMand their sinמִלְּפָנֶיךָmil/le/fa/NE/khafrom Your sightאַל־תֶּמְחִיal-TEM/chido not blot out(והיו)vahayav[וְיִהְיוּ]ve/yih/YUbut let them beמֻכְשָׁלִיםmukh/sha/LIMoverthrownלְפָנֶיךָle/fa/NE/khabefore Youבְּעֵתbe/ETin the time ofאַפְּךָap/pe/KHAYour angerעֲשֵׂהa/SEdealבָהֶם׃va/HEMwith them

    Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
