1. 1

   וַתֵּצֵאand went outדִינָהDinahבַּת־לֵאָהdaughter of Leahאֲשֶׁרwhichיָלְדָהshe boreלְיַעֲקֹבto Jacobלִרְאוֹתto seeבִּבְנוֹתin the daughters ofהָאָרֶץ׃the land

   And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2. 2

   וַיַּרְאand sawאֹתָהּherשְׁכֶםShechemבֶּן־חֲמוֹרson of Hamorהַחִוִּיthe Hiviteנְשִׂיאleader ofהָאָרֶץthe landוַיִּקַּחand tookאֹתָהּherוַיִּשְׁכַּבand lay withאֹתָהּherוַיְעַנֶּהָ׃and he humiliated her

   And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

   וַתִּדְבַּקand it cleavedנַפְשׁוֹhis soulבְּדִינָהto Dinahבַּת־יַעֲקֹבdaughter of Jacobוַיֶּאֱהַבand he lovedאֶת־הַנַּעֲרָthe young womanוַיְדַבֵּרand spokeעַל־לֵבto the heart ofהַנַּעֲרָ׃the young woman

   And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

4. 4

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidשְׁכֶםShechemאֶל־חֲמוֹרto Hamorאָבִיוhis fatherלֵאמֹרsayingקַח־לִיtake to meאֶת־הַיַּלְדָּהthe girlהַזֹּאתthisלְאִשָּׁה׃as a wife

   And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

   וְיַעֲקֹבand Jacobשָׁמַעheardכִּיthatטִמֵּאhe had defiledאֶת־דִּינָהDinahבִתּוֹhis daughterוּבָנָיוand his sonsהָיוּwereאֶת־מִקְנֵהוּwith his livestockבַּשָּׂדֶהin the fieldוְהֶחֱרִשׁand he kept silentיַעֲקֹבJacobעַד־בֹּאָם׃until they came

   And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

6. 6

   וַיֵּצֵאand went outחֲמוֹרHamorאֲבִי־שְׁכֶםthe father of Shechemאֶל־יַעֲקֹבto Jacobלְדַבֵּרto speakאִתּוֹ׃with him

   And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.

7. 7

   וּבְנֵיand sons ofיַעֲקֹבJacobבָּאוּcameמִן־הַשָּׂדֶהfrom the fieldכְּשׇׁמְעָםwhen they heardוַיִּתְעַצְּבוּand grievedהָאֲנָשִׁיםthe menוַיִּחַרand were angryלָהֶםto themמְאֹדexceedinglyכִּי־נְבָלָהbecause follyעָשָׂהhe madeבְיִשְׂרָאֵלin Israelלִשְׁכַּבin lying withאֶת־בַּת־יַעֲקֹבJacob's daughterוְכֵןand soלֹאnotיֵעָשֶׂה׃shall be done

   And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.

8. 8

   וַיְדַבֵּרand spokeחֲמוֹרHamorאִתָּםwith themלֵאמֹרsayingשְׁכֶםShechemבְּנִיmy sonחָשְׁקָהlongsנַפְשׁוֹhis soulבְּבִתְּכֶםfor your daughterתְּנוּgiveנָאI prayאֹתָהּherלוֹto himלְאִשָּׁה׃as a wife

   And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.

9. 9

   וְהִתְחַתְּנוּand intermarry withאֹתָנוּusבְּנֹתֵיכֶםyour daughtersתִּתְּנוּ־לָנוּyou shall give usוְאֶת־בְּנֹתֵינוּand our daughtersתִּקְחוּyou will takeלָכֶם׃to you

   And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

10. 10

    וְאִתָּנוּand with usתֵּשֵׁבוּyou will dwellוְהָאָרֶץand the earthתִּהְיֶהshall beלִפְנֵיכֶםbefore youשְׁבוּdwellוּסְחָרוּהָand trade in itוְהֵאָחֲזוּand get possessionsבָּהּ׃in it

    And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.

11. 11

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidשְׁכֶםShechemאֶל־אָבִיהָto her fatherוְאֶל־אַחֶיהָand to her brothersאֶמְצָא־חֵןI might find favorבְּעֵינֵיכֶםin your eyesוַאֲשֶׁרand whateverתֹּאמְרוּyou sayאֵלַיto meאֶתֵּן׃I will give

    And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

12. 12

    הַרְבּוּincreaseעָלַיupon meמְאֹדexceedinglyמֹהַרa bride priceוּמַתָּןand a giftוְאֶתְּנָהand I will giveכַּאֲשֶׁרasתֹּאמְרוּyou sayאֵלָיunto meוּתְנוּ־לִיand give meאֶת־הַנַּעֲרָthe young womanלְאִשָּׁה׃as a wife

    Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.

13. 13

    וַיַּעֲנוּand they answeredבְנֵי־יַעֲקֹבsons of Jacobאֶת־שְׁכֶםShechemוְאֶת־חֲמוֹרand Hamorאָבִיוhis fatherבְּמִרְמָהin deceptionוַיְדַבֵּרוּand they spokeאֲשֶׁרbecauseטִמֵּאhe had defiledאֵת־דִּינָהDinahאֲחֹתָם׃their sister

    And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

14. 14

    וַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidאֲלֵיהֶםto themלֹאnotנוּכַלcan weלַעֲשׂוֹתto doהַדָּבָרthe thingהַזֶּהthisלָתֵתto giveאֶת־אֲחֹתֵנוּour sisterלְאִישׁfor a manאֲשֶׁר־לוֹwho hasעׇרְלָהa foreskinכִּי־חֶרְפָּהbecause reproachהִואitלָנוּ׃to us

    And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:

15. 15

    אַךְ־בְּזֹאתbut in thisנֵאוֹתwe will agreeלָכֶםof yoursאִםifתִּהְיוּyou becomeכָמֹנוּlike usלְהִמֹּלto be circumcisedלָכֶםof yoursכׇּל־זָכָר׃all male

    But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;

16. 16

    וְנָתַנּוּand we will giveאֶת־בְּנֹתֵינוּour daughtersלָכֶםto youוְאֶת־בְּנֹתֵיכֶםand your daughtersנִקַּח־לָנוּwe will take for usוְיָשַׁבְנוּand we will dwellאִתְּכֶםwith youוְהָיִינוּand we will beלְעַםa peopleאֶחָד׃one

    Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

17. 17

    וְאִם־לֹאand if notתִשְׁמְעוּyou hearkenאֵלֵינוּunto usלְהִמּוֹלby being circumcisedוְלָקַחְנוּand we will takeאֶת־בִּתֵּנוּour daughterוְהָלָכְנוּ׃and we will go

    But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.

18. 18

    וַיִּיטְבוּand they were goodדִבְרֵיהֶםtheir wordsבְּעֵינֵיin the eyes ofחֲמוֹרHamorוּבְעֵינֵיand in the eyes ofשְׁכֶםShechemבֶּן־חֲמוֹר׃son of Hamor

    And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.

19. 19

    וְלֹא־אֵחַרand not he delayedהַנַּעַרthe young manלַעֲשׂוֹתto doהַדָּבָרthe thingכִּיbecauseחָפֵץhe delightedבְּבַת־יַעֲקֹבin the daughter of Jacobוְהוּאand heנִכְבָּדwas honorableמִכֹּלmore than allבֵּיתthe house ofאָבִיו׃his father

    And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.

20. 20

    וַיָּבֹאand cameחֲמוֹרHamorוּשְׁכֶםand Shechemבְּנוֹhis sonאֶל־שַׁעַרto the gate ofעִירָםtheir cityוַיְדַבְּרוּand spokeאֶל־אַנְשֵׁיto the men ofעִירָםtheir cityלֵאמֹר׃saying

    And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,

21. 21

    הָאֲנָשִׁיםthe menהָאֵלֶּהtheseשְׁלֵמִיםpeaceableהֵםtheyאִתָּנוּwith usוְיֵשְׁבוּand let them dwellבָאָרֶץin the landוְיִסְחֲרוּand let them trade inאֹתָהּitוְהָאָרֶץand the earthהִנֵּהbeholdרַחֲבַת־יָדַיִםis large enoughלִפְנֵיהֶםbefore themאֶת־בְּנֹתָםtheir daughtersנִקַּח־לָנוּwe will take for usלְנָשִׁיםfor wivesוְאֶת־בְּנֹתֵינוּand our daughtersנִתֵּןwe will giveלָהֶם׃to them

    These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

22. 22

    אַךְ־בְּזֹאתbut in thisיֵאֹתוּthey will agreeלָנוּto usהָאֲנָשִׁיםthe menלָשֶׁבֶתto dwellאִתָּנוּwith usלִהְיוֹתto beלְעַםa peopleאֶחָדoneבְּהִמּוֹלif is circumcisedלָנוּto usכׇּל־זָכָרall maleכַּאֲשֶׁרasהֵםtheyנִמֹּלִים׃are circumcised

    Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

23. 23

    מִקְנֵהֶםtheir livestockוְקִנְיָנָםtheir substanceוְכׇל־בְּהֶמְתָּםand all their beastsהֲלוֹאis it notלָנוּoursהֵםbeאַךְbutנֵאוֹתָהlet us agreeלָהֶםto themוְיֵשְׁבוּand let them dwellאִתָּנוּ׃with us

    Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.

24. 24

    וַיִּשְׁמְעוּand they heardאֶל־חֲמוֹרto Hamorוְאֶל־שְׁכֶםand Shechemבְּנוֹhis sonכׇּל־יֹצְאֵיall those which came out ofשַׁעַרthe gate ofעִירוֹhis cityוַיִּמֹּלוּand they were circumcisedכׇּל־זָכָרall maleכׇּל־יֹצְאֵיall those which came out ofשַׁעַרthe gate ofעִירוֹ׃his city

    And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

25. 25

    וַיְהִיand it came to passבַיּוֹםby the dayהַשְּׁלִישִׁיthe thirdבִּהְיוֹתָםwhen they wereכֹּאֲבִיםin painוַיִּקְחוּand they tookשְׁנֵי־בְנֵי־יַעֲקֹבtwo sons of JacobשִׁמְעוֹןSimeonוְלֵוִיand Leviאֲחֵיthe brethren ofדִינָהDinahאִישׁeachחַרְבּוֹhis swordוַיָּבֹאוּand they cameעַל־הָעִירupon the cityבֶּטַחboldlyוַיַּהַרְגוּand slewכׇּל־זָכָר׃all male

    And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

26. 26

    וְאֶת־חֲמוֹרand Hamorוְאֶת־שְׁכֶםand Shechemבְּנוֹhis sonהָרְגוּthey slewלְפִי־חָרֶבby the edge of the swordוַיִּקְחוּand they tookאֶת־דִּינָהDinahמִבֵּיתfrom the house ofשְׁכֶםShechemוַיֵּצֵאוּ׃and they went out

    And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.

27. 27

    בְּנֵיthe sons ofיַעֲקֹבJacobבָּאוּcameעַל־הַחֲלָלִיםupon the ones slainוַיָּבֹזּוּand plunderedהָעִירthe cityאֲשֶׁרwhichטִמְּאוּthey had defiledאֲחוֹתָם׃their sister

    The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

28. 28

    אֶת־צֹאנָםtheir flocksוְאֶת־בְּקָרָםand their herdsוְאֶת־חֲמֹרֵיהֶםand their donkeysוְאֵתandאֲשֶׁר־בָּעִירwhich in the cityוְאֶת־אֲשֶׁרand thatבַּשָּׂדֶהin the fieldלָקָחוּ׃they took

    They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,

29. 29

    וְאֶת־כׇּל־חֵילָםand all their forcesוְאֶת־כׇּל־טַפָּםand all their childrenוְאֶת־נְשֵׁיהֶםand their womenשָׁבוּthey took captiveוַיָּבֹזּוּand they plunderedוְאֵתandכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרall thatבַּבָּיִת׃in the house

    And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.

30. 30

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיַעֲקֹבJacobאֶל־שִׁמְעוֹןto Simeonוְאֶל־לֵוִיand Leviעֲכַרְתֶּםyou have troubledאֹתִיmeלְהַבְאִישֵׁנִיby making odious meבְּיֹשֵׁבamong the inhabitants ofהָאָרֶץthe landבַּכְּנַעֲנִיamong the Canaaniteוּבַפְּרִזִּיand among the Perizziteוַאֲנִיand Iמְתֵיmen ofמִסְפָּרnumberוְנֶאֶסְפוּand they will gatherעָלַיagainst meוְהִכּוּנִיand they will attack meוְנִשְׁמַדְתִּיand I will be destroyedאֲנִיIוּבֵיתִי׃and my house

    And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

31. 31

    וַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidהַכְזוֹנָהas with a harlotיַעֲשֶׂהshould he deal withאֶת־אֲחוֹתֵנוּ׃our sister

    And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?
