   וַיַּשְׁכֵּםvay/yash/KEMand he rose earlyלָבָןLa/VANLabanבַּבֹּקֶרbab/BO/kerin the morningוַיְנַשֵּׁקvay/nash/SHEKand kissedלְבָנָיוle/va/NAYVhis sonsוְלִבְנוֹתָיוve/liv/no/TAYVand his daughtersוַיְבָרֶךְvay/VA/rekhand blessedאֶתְהֶםet/HEMthemוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentוַיָּשׇׁבvay/YA/shovand returnedלָבָןLa/VANLabanלִמְקֹמוֹ׃lim/ko/MOto his place

   And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.

   וְיַעֲקֹבve/Ya/a/KOVand Jacobהָלַךְha/LAKHwentלְדַרְכּוֹle/dar/KOon his wayוַיִּפְגְּעוּ־בוֹvay/yif/ge/U-voand met himמַלְאֲכֵיmal/a/KHEthe angels ofאֱלֹהִים׃e/lo/HIMGod

   And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenרָאָםra/AMhe saw themמַחֲנֵהma/cha/NEthe camp ofאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodזֶהzethis isוַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand calledשֵׁם־הַמָּקוֹםshem-ham/ma/KOMthe name of the placeהַהוּאha/HUthatמַחֲנָיִם׃Ma/cha/NA/yimMahanaim

   And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

   וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobמַלְאָכִיםmal/a/KHIMmessengersלְפָנָיוle/fa/NAYVbefore himאֶל־עֵשָׂוel-E/SAVto Esauאָחִיוa/CHIVhis brotherאַרְצָהAR/tsato the land ofשֵׂעִירSe/IRSeirשְׂדֵהse/DEthe country ofאֱדוֹם׃E/DOMEdom

   And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

   וַיְצַוvay/TSAVand he commandedאֹתָםo/TAMthemלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingכֹּהkothusתֹאמְרוּןto/me/RUNyou shall speakלַאדֹנִיla/do/NIto my lordלְעֵשָׂוle/E/SAVto Esauכֹּהkothusאָמַרa/MARsaysעַבְדְּךָav/de/KHAyour servantיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobעִם־לָבָןim-La/VANwith LabanגַּרְתִּיGAR/tiI have sojournedוָאֵחַרva/e/CHARand I have stayedעַד־עָתָּה׃ad-AT/tauntil now

   And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:

6. 6

   וַיְהִי־לִיvay/HI-liand I haveשׁוֹרshoroxenוַחֲמוֹרva/cha/MORand donkeysצֹאןtsonflocksוְעֶבֶדve/E/vedand menservantsוְשִׁפְחָהve/shif/CHAand maidservantsוָאֶשְׁלְחָהva/esh/le/CHAand I have sentלְהַגִּידle/hag/GIDto tellלַאדֹנִיla/do/NIto my lordלִמְצֹא־חֵןlim/TSO-chento find favorבְּעֵינֶיךָ׃be/e/NE/khain your eyes

   And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

   וַיָּשֻׁבוּvay/ya/SHU/vuand returnedהַמַּלְאָכִיםham/mal/a/KHIMthe messengersאֶל־יַעֲקֹבel-Ya/a/KOVto Jacobלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingבָּאנוּBA/nuwe cameאֶל־אָחִיךָel-a/CHI/khato your brotherאֶל־עֵשָׂוel-E/SAVto Esauוְגַםve/GAMand alsoהֹלֵךְho/LEKHhe comesלִקְרָאתְךָlik/ra/te/KHAto meet youוְאַרְבַּע־מֵאוֹתve/ar/BA-me/OTand four hundredאִישׁishmenעִמּוֹ׃im/MOwith him

   And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

   וַיִּירָאvay/yi/RAand was afraidיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyוַיֵּצֶרvay/YE/tserand was distressedלוֹloto himוַיַּחַץvay/YA/chatsand he dividedאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹa/SHER-it/TOthat was with himוְאֶת־הַצֹּאןve/ET-hats/TSONand the flockוְאֶת־הַבָּקָרve/ET-hab/ba/KARand the herdוְהַגְּמַלִּיםve/hag/ge/mal/LIMand the camelsלִשְׁנֵיlish/NEinto twoמַחֲנוֹת׃ma/cha/NOTcamps

   Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

9. 9

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאִם־יָבוֹאim-ya/VOif comesעֵשָׂוE/SAVEsauאֶל־הַמַּחֲנֶהel-ham/ma/cha/NEto the campהָאַחַתha/a/CHATthe oneוְהִכָּהוּve/hik/KA/huand smites itוְהָיָהve/ha/YAthen shallהַמַּחֲנֶהham/ma/cha/NEthe campהַנִּשְׁאָרhan/nish/ARwhich is leftלִפְלֵיטָה׃lif/le/TAescape

   And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofאָבִיa/VImy fatherאַבְרָהָםAv/ra/HAMAbrahamוֵאלֹהֵיve/lo/HEand the God ofאָבִיa/VImy fatherיִצְחָקYits/CHAKIsaacיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDהָאֹמֵרha/o/MERwho saidאֵלַיe/LAYto meשׁוּבshuvreturnלְאַרְצְךָle/ar/tse/KHAto your landוּלְמוֹלַדְתְּךָu/le/mo/lad/te/KHAand to your kindredוְאֵיטִיבָהve/e/TI/vaand I will deal wellעִמָּךְ׃im/MAKHwith you

    And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

11. 11

    קָטֹנְתִּיka/TON/tiI am unworthyמִכֹּלmik/KOLof allהַחֲסָדִיםha/cha/sa/DIMthe merciesוּמִכׇּל־הָאֱמֶתu/mik/KOL-ha/e/METand of all the truthאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעָשִׂיתָa/SI/tayou have shownאֶת־עַבְדֶּךָet-av/DE/khayour servantכִּיkiforבְמַקְלִיve/mak/LIwith my staffעָבַרְתִּיa/VAR/tiI passed overאֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּןet-Hay/yar/DENthe Jordanהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהָיִיתִיha/YI/tiI have becomeלִשְׁנֵיlish/NEtwoמַחֲנוֹת׃ma/cha/NOTcamps

    I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

12. 12

    הַצִּילֵנִיhats/tsi/LE/nideliver meנָאnaI prayמִיַּדmiy/YADfrom the hand ofאָחִיa/CHImy brotherמִיַּדmiy/YADfrom the hand ofעֵשָׂוE/SAVEsauכִּי־יָרֵאki-ya/REfor afraidאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIam Iאֹתוֹo/TOof himפֶּן־יָבוֹאpen-ya/VOlest he comeוְהִכַּנִיve/hik/KA/niand smite meאֵםemthe motherעַל־בָּנִים׃al-ba/NIMwith the children

    Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

13. 13

    וְאַתָּהve/at/TAand youאָמַרְתָּa/MAR/tasaidהֵיטֵבhe/TEVdo goodאֵיטִיבe/TIVI will do goodעִמָּךְim/MAKHwith youוְשַׂמְתִּיve/sam/TIand I will makeאֶת־זַרְעֲךָet-zar/a/KHAyour seedכְּחוֹלke/CHOLas the sand ofהַיָּםhay/YAMthe seaאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלֹא־יִסָּפֵרlo-yis/sa/FERcannot be numberedמֵרֹב׃me/ROVfor multitude

    And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

14. 14

    וַיָּלֶןvay/YA/lenand he lodgedשָׁםshamthereבַּלַּיְלָהbal/LAY/lain the nightהַהוּאha/HUthatוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookמִן־הַבָּאmin-hab/BAof that which cameבְיָדוֹve/ya/DOto his handמִנְחָהmin/CHAa presentלְעֵשָׂוle/E/SAVto Esauאָחִיו׃a/CHIVhis brother

    And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

15. 15

    עִזִּיםiz/ZIMgoatsמָאתַיִםma/TA/yimtwo hundredוּתְיָשִׁיםu/te/ya/SHIMand male goatsעֶשְׂרִיםes/RIMtwentyרְחֵלִיםre/che/LIMewesמָאתַיִםma/TA/yimtwo hundredוְאֵילִיםve/e/LIMand ramsעֶשְׂרִים׃es/RIMtwenty

    Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,

16. 16

    גְּמַלִּיםge/mal/LIMcamelsמֵינִיקוֹתme/ni/KOTmilkingוּבְנֵיהֶםu/ve/ne/HEMand their coltsשְׁלֹשִׁיםshe/lo/SHIMthirtyפָּרוֹתpa/ROTcowsאַרְבָּעִיםar/ba/IMfortyוּפָרִיםu/fa/RIMand bullsעֲשָׂרָהa/sa/RAtenאֲתֹנֹתa/to/NOTshe-donkeysעֶשְׂרִיםes/RIMtwentyוַעְיָרִםva/ya/RIMand foalsעֲשָׂרָה׃a/sa/RAten

    Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

17. 17

    וַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENand gaveבְּיַד־עֲבָדָיוbe/YAD-a/va/DAYVinto the hand of his servantsעֵדֶרE/dera droveעֵדֶרE/dera droveלְבַדּוֹle/vad/DOby itselfוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֶל־עֲבָדָיוel-a/va/DAYVto his servantsעִבְרוּiv/RUpass overלְפָנַיle/fa/NAYbefore meוְרֶוַחve/RE/vachand a spaceתָּשִׂימוּta/SI/muputבֵּיןbenbetweenעֵדֶרE/dera droveוּבֵיןu/VENand betweenעֵדֶר׃E/dera drove

    And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

18. 18

    וַיְצַוvay/TSAVand he commandedאֶת־הָרִאשׁוֹןet-ha/ri/SHONthe firstלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingכִּיkiwhenיִפְגׇשְׁךָyif/gosh/KHAmeets youעֵשָׂוE/SAVEsauאָחִיa/CHImy brotherוּשְׁאֵלְךָu/she/el/KHAand asks youלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingלְמִי־אַתָּהle/MI-AT/tawhose are youוְאָנָהve/A/naand whereתֵלֵךְte/LEKHare you goingוּלְמִיu/le/MIand whose areאֵלֶּהEL/letheseלְפָנֶיךָ׃le/fa/NE/khabefore you

    And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?

19. 19

    וְאָמַרְתָּve/a/mar/TAthen you shall sayלְעַבְדְּךָle/av/de/KHAyour servant'sלְיַעֲקֹבLe/ya/a/KOVJacob'sמִנְחָהmin/CHAa presentהִואhivit isשְׁלוּחָהshe/lu/CHAsentלַאדֹנִיla/do/NIto my lordלְעֵשָׂוle/E/SAVto Esauוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdגַם־הוּאgam-hualso heאַחֲרֵינוּ׃a/cha/RE/nuis behind us

    Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.

20. 20

    וַיְצַוvay/TSAVand he commandedגַּםgamalsoאֶת־הַשֵּׁנִיet-hash/she/NIthe secondגַּםgamalsoאֶת־הַשְּׁלִישִׁיet-hash/she/li/SHIthe thirdגַּםgamalsoאֶת־כׇּל־הַהֹלְכִיםet-kol-ha/hol/KHIMall who wentאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהָעֲדָרִיםha/a/da/RIMthe drovesלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingכַּדָּבָרkad/da/VARaccording to the wordהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisתְּדַבְּרוּןte/dab/be/RUNyou shall speakאֶל־עֵשָׂוel-E/SAVto Esauבְּמֹצַאֲכֶםbe/mo/tsa/a/KHEMwhen you findאֹתוֹ׃o/TOhim

    And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

21. 21

    וַאֲמַרְתֶּםva/a/mar/TEMand you shall sayגַּםgammoreoverהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdעַבְדְּךָav/de/KHAyour servantיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobאַחֲרֵינוּa/cha/RE/nuis behind usכִּי־אָמַרki-a/MARfor he saidאֲכַפְּרָהa/khap/pe/RAI will appeaseפָנָיוfa/NAYVhis faceבַּמִּנְחָהbam/min/CHAwith the presentהַהֹלֶכֶתha/ho/LE/khetthat goesלְפָנָיle/fa/NAYbefore meוְאַחֲרֵי־כֵןve/a/cha/RE-khenand afterwardאֶרְאֶהer/EI shall seeפָנָיוfa/NAYVhis faceאוּלַיu/LAYperhapsיִשָּׂאyis/SAhe will acceptפָנָי׃fa/NAYmy face

    And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.

22. 22

    וַתַּעֲבֹרvat/ta/a/VORand passedהַמִּנְחָהham/min/CHAthe presentעַל־פָּנָיוal-pa/NAYVbefore himוְהוּאve/HUand heלָןlanlodgedבַּלַּיְלָה־הַהוּאbal/LAY/la-ha/HUthat nightבַּמַּחֲנֶה׃bam/ma/cha/NEin the camp

    So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

23. 23

    וַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand rose upבַּלַּיְלָהbal/LAY/lain the nightהוּאhuthatוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookאֶת־שְׁתֵּיet-shtetwoנָשָׁוna/SHAVhis wivesוְאֶת־שְׁתֵּיve/ET-shteand twoשִׁפְחֹתָיוshif/cho/TAYVhis handmaidsוְאֶת־אַחַד־עָשָׂרve/ET-a/CHAD-a/SARand elevenיְלָדָיוye/la/DAYVhis childrenוַיַּעֲבֹרvay/ya/a/VORand passed overאֵת־מַעֲבַרet-ma/a/VARthe ford ofיַבֹּק׃Yab/BOKJabbok

    And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

24. 24

    וַיִּקָּחֵםvay/yik/ka/CHEMand he took themוַיַּעֲבִרֵםvay/ya/a/vi/REMand sent them overאֶת־הַנָּחַלet-han/NA/chalthe brookוַיַּעֲבֵרvay/ya/a/VERand he sent overאֶת־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ׃et-a/SHER-lowhat he had

    And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.

25. 25

    וַיִּוָּתֵרvay/yiv/va/TERand he remainedיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobלְבַדּוֹle/vad/DOaloneוַיֵּאָבֵקvay/ye/a/VEKand wrestledאִישׁisha manעִמּוֹim/MOwith himעַדaduntilעֲלוֹתa/LOTthe rising ofהַשָּׁחַר׃hash/SHA/charthe dawn

    And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

26. 26

    וַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawכִּיkithatלֹאlonotיָכֹלya/KHOLhe prevailedלוֹloagainst himוַיִּגַּעvay/yig/GAand he touchedבְּכַף־יְרֵכוֹbe/KHAF-ye/re/KHOthe hollow of his thighוַתֵּקַעvat/TE/kaand was out of jointכַּף־יֶרֶךְkaf-YE/rekhthe hollow of the thigh ofיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobבְּהֵאָבְקוֹbe/he/a/ve/KOas he wrestledעִמּוֹ׃im/MOwith him

    And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

27. 27

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשַׁלְּחֵנִיshal/le/CHE/nilet me goכִּיkiforעָלָהa/LAhas risenהַשָּׁחַרhash/SHA/charthe dawnוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלֹאlonotאֲשַׁלֵּחֲךָa/shal/le/cha/KHAI will let you goכִּיkiexceptאִם־בֵּרַכְתָּנִי׃im-be/rakh/TA/niyou bless me

    And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

28. 28

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himמַה־שְּׁמֶךָma-she/ME/khawhat is your nameוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיַעֲקֹב׃Ya/a/KOVJacob

    And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

29. 29

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלֹאlonotיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobיֵאָמֵרye/a/MERshall be calledעוֹדodany moreשִׁמְךָshim/KHAyour nameכִּיkiforאִם־יִשְׂרָאֵלim-Yis/ra/ELbut Israelכִּי־שָׂרִיתָki-sa/RI/tafor you have strivenעִם־אֱלֹהִיםim-e/lo/HIMwith Godוְעִם־אֲנָשִׁיםve/IM-a/na/SHIMand with menוַתּוּכָל׃vat/tu/KHALand you have prevailed

    And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

30. 30

    וַיִּשְׁאַלvay/yish/ALand askedיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַגִּידָה־נָּאhag/GI/da-natell I prayשְׁמֶךָshe/ME/khayour nameוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלָמָּהLAM/mawhyזֶּהzeis itתִּשְׁאַלtish/ALthat you askלִשְׁמִיlish/MIafter my nameוַיְבָרֶךְvay/VA/rekhand blessedאֹתוֹo/TOhimשָׁם׃shamthere

    And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

31. 31

    וַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand calledיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobשֵׁםshemthe name ofהַמָּקוֹםham/ma/KOMthe placeפְּנִיאֵלPe/ni/ELPenielכִּי־רָאִיתִיki-ra/I/tifor I have seenאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodפָּנִיםpa/NIMfaceאֶל־פָּנִיםel-pa/NIMto faceוַתִּנָּצֵלvat/tin/na/TSELand is preservedנַפְשִׁי׃naf/SHImy life

    And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

32. 32

    וַיִּזְרַח־לוֹvay/yiz/RACH-loand rose upon himהַשֶּׁמֶשׁhash/SHE/meshthe sunכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasעָבַרa/VARhe passed overאֶת־פְּנוּאֵלet-Pe/nu/ELPenuelוְהוּאve/HUand heצֹלֵעַtso/LE/alimpedעַל־יְרֵכוֹ׃al-ye/re/KHOupon his thigh

    And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.

33. 33

    עַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeלֹא־יֹאכְלוּlo-yo/khe/LUeat notבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelאֶת־גִּידet-gidthe sinew ofהַנָּשֶׁהhan/na/SHEthe thigh veinאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעַל־כַּףal-kafupon the hollow ofהַיָּרֵךְhay/ya/REKHthe thighעַדaduntilהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכִּיkibecauseנָגַעna/GAhe touchedבְּכַף־יֶרֶךְbe/KHAF-YE/rekhthe hollow of the thigh ofיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobבְּגִידbe/GIDon the sinew ofהַנָּשֶׁה׃han/na/SHEthe thigh vein

    Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
