    וַיַּשְׁכֵּםand he rose earlyלָבָןLabanבַּבֹּקֶרin the morningוַיְנַשֵּׁקand kissedלְבָנָיוhis sonsוְלִבְנוֹתָיוand his daughtersוַיְבָרֶךְand blessedאֶתְהֶםthemוַיֵּלֶךְand wentוַיָּשׇׁבand returnedלָבָןLabanלִמְקֹמוֹ׃to his place

    And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.

    וְיַעֲקֹבand Jacobהָלַךְwentלְדַרְכּוֹto his own wayוַיִּפְגְּעוּ־בוֹand met himמַלְאֲכֵיthe angels ofאֱלֹהִים׃God

    And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיַעֲקֹבJacobכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenרָאָםhe saw themמַחֲנֵהthe camp ofאֱלֹהִיםGodזֶהthisוַיִּקְרָאand calledשֵׁם־הַמָּקוֹםname of the placeהַהוּאthatמַחֲנָיִם׃Mahanaim

    And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

    וַיִּשְׁלַחand sentיַעֲקֹבJacobמַלְאָכִיםmessengersלְפָנָיוbefore himאֶל־עֵשָׂוto Esauאָחִיוhis brotherאַרְצָהto the earthשֵׂעִירSeirשְׂדֵהthe field ofאֱדוֹם׃Edom

    And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

    וַיְצַוand commandedאֹתָםthemלֵאמֹרsayingכֹּהthusתֹאמְרוּןyou will sayלַאדֹנִיto my lordלְעֵשָׂוto Esauכֹּהthusאָמַרsaidעַבְדְּךָyour servantיַעֲקֹבJacobעִם־לָבָןwith LabanגַּרְתִּיI have sojournedוָאֵחַרand I have delayedעַד־עָתָּה׃until now

    And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:

    וַיְהִי־לִיand I haveשׁוֹרoxוַחֲמוֹרand donkeysצֹאןflocksוְעֶבֶדand manservantוְשִׁפְחָהand maidservantוָאֶשְׁלְחָהand I have sentלְהַגִּידto declareלַאדֹנִיto my lordלִמְצֹא־חֵןto find favorבְּעֵינֶיךָ׃in your eyes

    And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

    וַיָּשֻׁבוּand returnedהַמַּלְאָכִיםthe angelsאֶל־יַעֲקֹבto Jacobלֵאמֹרsayingבָּאנוּwe cameאֶל־אָחִיךָto your brotherאֶל־עֵשָׂוto Esauוְגַםand alsoהֹלֵךְgoingלִקְרָאתְךָto meet youוְאַרְבַּע־מֵאוֹתand four hundredאִישׁmenעִמּוֹ׃with him

    And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

    וַיִּירָאand he fearedיַעֲקֹבJacobמְאֹדexceedinglyוַיֵּצֶרand was distressedלוֹto himוַיַּחַץand he dividedאֶת־הָעָםthe peopleאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹwhich with himוְאֶת־הַצֹּאןand the flockוְאֶת־הַבָּקָרand the herdוְהַגְּמַלִּיםand the camelsלִשְׁנֵיinto twoמַחֲנוֹת׃camps

    Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאִם־יָבוֹאif comesעֵשָׂוEsauאֶל־הַמַּחֲנֶהto the campהָאַחַתthe oneוְהִכָּהוּand shall smite itוְהָיָהand beהַמַּחֲנֶהthe campהַנִּשְׁאָרthat remainsלִפְלֵיטָה׃an escaped remnant

    And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיַעֲקֹבJacobאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofאָבִיmy fatherאַבְרָהָםAbrahamוֵאלֹהֵיand God ofאָבִיmy fatherיִצְחָקIsaacיְהֹוָהthe LORDהָאֹמֵרwho saidאֵלַיto meשׁוּבreturnלְאַרְצְךָto your landוּלְמוֹלַדְתְּךָand to your kindredוְאֵיטִיבָהso let me do goodעִמָּךְ׃with you

    And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

    קָטֹנְתִּיI am unworthyמִכֹּלof allהַחֲסָדִיםthe merciesוּמִכׇּל־הָאֱמֶתand of all the truthאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשִׂיתָyou didאֶת־עַבְדֶּךָyour servantכִּיforבְמַקְלִיwith my staffעָבַרְתִּיI crossedאֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּןthe Jordanהַזֶּהthisוְעַתָּהand nowהָיִיתִיI wasלִשְׁנֵיinto twoמַחֲנוֹת׃camps

    I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

  12. 12

    הַצִּילֵנִיdeliver meנָאI prayמִיַּדfrom the hand ofאָחִיmy brotherמִיַּדfrom the hand ofעֵשָׂוEsauכִּי־יָרֵאbecause fearאָנֹכִיIאֹתוֹhimפֶּן־יָבוֹאlest shall comeוְהִכַּנִיand he will smite meאֵםthe motherעַל־בָּנִים׃upon sons

    Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

  13. 13

    וְאַתָּהand youאָמַרְתָּhave saidהֵיטֵבsurelyאֵיטִיבI will do goodעִמָּךְwith youוְשַׂמְתִּיand I will makeאֶת־זַרְעֲךָyour seedכְּחוֹלas sand ofהַיָּםthe seaאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־יִסָּפֵרnot it will be countedמֵרֹב׃from the multitude of

    And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

    וַיָּלֶןand he lodgedשָׁםthereבַּלַּיְלָהin the nightהַהוּאthatוַיִּקַּחand tookמִן־הַבָּאfrom that comesבְיָדוֹin his handמִנְחָהa grain offeringלְעֵשָׂוto Esauאָחִיו׃his brother

    And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

  15. 15

    עִזִּיםgoatsמָאתַיִםtwo hundredוּתְיָשִׁיםand male goatsעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyרְחֵלִיםewesמָאתַיִםtwo hundredוְאֵילִיםand ramsעֶשְׂרִים׃twenty

    Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,

    גְּמַלִּיםcamelsמֵינִיקוֹתnursingוּבְנֵיהֶםand their sonsשְׁלֹשִׁיםthirtyפָּרוֹתcowsאַרְבָּעִיםfortyוּפָרִיםand bullsעֲשָׂרָהtenאֲתֹנֹתfemale donkeysעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyוַעְיָרִםand male donkeysעֲשָׂרָה׃ten

    Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

  17. 17

    וַיִּתֵּןand gaveבְּיַד־עֲבָדָיוinto the hand of his servantsעֵדֶרa droveעֵדֶרa droveלְבַדּוֹaloneוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֶל־עֲבָדָיוto his servantsעִבְרוּpass overלְפָנַיbefore meוְרֶוַחand a spaceתָּשִׂימוּyou shall putבֵּיןbetweenעֵדֶרa droveוּבֵיןand betweenעֵדֶר׃a drove

    And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

  18. 18

    וַיְצַוand commandedאֶת־הָרִאשׁוֹןthe firstלֵאמֹרsayingכִּיbecauseיִפְגׇשְׁךָhe will meet youעֵשָׂוEsauאָחִיmy brotherוּשְׁאֵלְךָand asks youלֵאמֹרsayingלְמִי־אַתָּהto whom youוְאָנָהand whereתֵלֵךְyou shall goוּלְמִיand whose areאֵלֶּהtheseלְפָנֶיךָ׃before you

    And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?

  19. 19

    וְאָמַרְתָּand sayלְעַבְדְּךָyour servant'sלְיַעֲקֹבto Jacobמִנְחָהa grain offeringהִואitשְׁלוּחָהwhich has been sentלַאדֹנִיto my lordלְעֵשָׂוto Esauוְהִנֵּהand beholdגַם־הוּאalso heאַחֲרֵינוּ׃after us

    Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.

  20. 20

    וַיְצַוand commandedגַּםalsoאֶת־הַשֵּׁנִיthe secondגַּםalsoאֶת־הַשְּׁלִישִׁיthe thirdגַּםalsoאֶת־כׇּל־הַהֹלְכִיםall the ones walkingאַחֲרֵיafterהָעֲדָרִיםthe flocksלֵאמֹרsayingכַּדָּבָרaccording to the wordהַזֶּהthisתְּדַבְּרוּןyou will speakאֶל־עֵשָׂוto Esauבְּמֹצַאֲכֶםwhen you findאֹתוֹ׃him

    And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

  21. 21

    וַאֲמַרְתֶּםand you shall sayגַּםalsoהִנֵּהbeholdעַבְדְּךָyour servantיַעֲקֹבJacobאַחֲרֵינוּafter usכִּי־אָמַרthat saidאֲכַפְּרָהI will appeaseפָנָיוhis faceבַּמִּנְחָהby the grain offeringהַהֹלֶכֶתthat goesלְפָנָיbefore meוְאַחֲרֵי־כֵןand after thusאֶרְאֶהI shall seeפָנָיוhis faceאוּלַיperhapsיִשָּׂאhe will acceptפָנָי׃my face

    And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.

  22. 22

    וַתַּעֲבֹרand passedהַמִּנְחָהthe grain offeringעַל־פָּנָיוbefore himוְהוּאand heלָןlodgedבַּלַּיְלָה־הַהוּאthat nightבַּמַּחֲנֶה׃in the camp

    So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

  23. 23

    וַיָּקׇםand rose upבַּלַּיְלָהin the nightהוּאheוַיִּקַּחand tookאֶת־שְׁתֵּיtwoנָשָׁוhis wivesוְאֶת־שְׁתֵּיand twoשִׁפְחֹתָיוhis maidservantsוְאֶת־אַחַד־עָשָׂרand elevenיְלָדָיוhis childrenוַיַּעֲבֹרand crossedאֵת־מַעֲבַרthe ford ofיַבֹּק׃Jabbok

    And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

  24. 24

    וַיִּקָּחֵםand he took themוַיַּעֲבִרֵםand sent them overאֶת־הַנָּחַלthe brookוַיַּעֲבֵרand he sent overאֶת־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ׃what he had

    And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.

  25. 25

    וַיִּוָּתֵרand he remainedיַעֲקֹבJacobלְבַדּוֹaloneוַיֵּאָבֵקand he wrestledאִישׁa manעִמּוֹwith himעַדuntilעֲלוֹתthe ascending ofהַשָּׁחַר׃the dawn

    And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

  26. 26

    וַיַּרְאand sawכִּיthatלֹאnotיָכֹלhe prevailedלוֹto himוַיִּגַּעand he touchedבְּכַף־יְרֵכוֹthe socket of his thighוַתֵּקַעand it was dislocatedכַּף־יֶרֶךְthe socket of the thigh ofיַעֲקֹבJacobבְּהֵאָבְקוֹas he wrestledעִמּוֹ׃with him

    And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

  27. 27

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidשַׁלְּחֵנִיlet me goכִּיbecauseעָלָהascendedהַשָּׁחַרthe dawnוַיֹּאמֶרand saidלֹאnotאֲשַׁלֵּחֲךָI will let you goכִּיbecauseאִם־בֵּרַכְתָּנִי׃unless you bless me

    And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

  28. 28

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוto himמַה־שְּׁמֶךָwhat is your nameוַיֹּאמֶרand saidיַעֲקֹב׃Jacob

    And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

  29. 29

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלֹאnotיַעֲקֹבJacobיֵאָמֵרit is saidעוֹדany moreשִׁמְךָyour nameכִּיforאִם־יִשְׂרָאֵלbut Israelכִּי־שָׂרִיתָbecause you have struggledעִם־אֱלֹהִיםwith Godוְעִם־אֲנָשִׁיםand with menוַתּוּכׇל׃and you have prevailed

    And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

  30. 30

    וַיִּשְׁאַלand askedיַעֲקֹבJacobוַיֹּאמֶרand saidהַגִּידָה־נָּאtell nowשְׁמֶךָyour nameוַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָמָּהwhyזֶּהthisתִּשְׁאַלyou shall askלִשְׁמִיafter my nameוַיְבָרֶךְand blessedאֹתוֹhimשָׁם׃there

    And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

  31. 31

    וַיִּקְרָאand calledיַעֲקֹבJacobשֵׁםthe name ofהַמָּקוֹםthe placeפְּנִיאֵלPenielכִּי־רָאִיתִיbecause I sawאֱלֹהִיםGodפָּנִיםfaceאֶל־פָּנִיםto faceוַתִּנָּצֵלand was preservedנַפְשִׁי׃my soul

    And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

  32. 32

    וַיִּזְרַח־לוֹand rose upon himהַשֶּׁמֶשׁthe sunכַּאֲשֶׁרasעָבַרhe passedאֶת־פְּנוּאֵלPenuelוְהוּאand heצֹלֵעַwas limpingעַל־יְרֵכוֹ׃upon his thigh

    And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.

  33. 33

    עַל־כֵּןthereforeלֹא־יֹאכְלוּdo not eatבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelאֶת־גִּידthe sinew ofהַנָּשֶׁהthe tendonאֲשֶׁרwhichעַל־כַּףupon the socket ofהַיָּרֵךְthe thighעַדuntilהַיּוֹםthe dayהַזֶּהthisכִּיbecauseנָגַעhas touchedבְּכַף־יֶרֶךְthe socket of the thigh ofיַעֲקֹבJacobבְּגִידthe sinew ofהַנָּשֶׁה׃the tendon

    Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
