1. 1

   וַיִּשָּׂאand lifted upיַעֲקֹבJacobרַגְלָיוhis feetוַיֵּלֶךְand wentאַרְצָהto the earthבְנֵי־קֶדֶם׃the sons of the east

   Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

2. 2

   וַיַּרְאand sawוְהִנֵּהand beholdבְאֵרa wellבַּשָּׂדֶהin the fieldוְהִנֵּה־שָׁםand behold thereשְׁלֹשָׁהthreeעֶדְרֵי־צֹאןflocks of sheepרֹבְצִיםwere lying downעָלֶיהָupon itכִּיforמִן־הַבְּאֵרfrom the wellהַהִואthatיַשְׁקוּthey wateredהָעֲדָרִיםthe flocksוְהָאֶבֶןand the stoneגְּדֹלָהgreatעַל־פִּיaccording toהַבְּאֵר׃the well

   And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.

   וְנֶאֶסְפוּ־שָׁמָּהand gathered thereכׇל־הָעֲדָרִיםall the flocksוְגָלְלוּand they rolledאֶת־הָאֶבֶןthe stoneמֵעַלfrom uponפִּיthe mouth ofהַבְּאֵרthe wellוְהִשְׁקוּand they wateredאֶת־הַצֹּאןthe flockוְהֵשִׁיבוּand they put backאֶת־הָאֶבֶןthe stoneעַל־פִּיaccording toהַבְּאֵרthe wellלִמְקֹמָהּ׃to its place

   And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place.

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהֶםto themיַעֲקֹבJacobאַחַיmy brothersמֵאַיִןwhenceאַתֶּםyou areוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidמֵחָרָןfrom Haranאֲנָחְנוּ׃we

   And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.

5. 5

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהֶםto themהַיְדַעְתֶּםdo you knowאֶת־לָבָןLabanבֶּן־נָחוֹרson of Nahorוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidיָדָעְנוּ׃we know

   And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.

6. 6

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהֶםto themהֲשָׁלוֹםis it wellלוֹwith himוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidשָׁלוֹםpeaceוְהִנֵּהand beholdרָחֵלRachelבִּתּוֹhis daughterבָּאָהcomesעִם־הַצֹּאן׃with the flock

   And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidהֵןbeholdעוֹדyetהַיּוֹםthe dayגָּדוֹלis highלֹא־עֵתnot timeהֵאָסֵףto gatherהַמִּקְנֶהthe livestockהַשְׁקוּwaterהַצֹּאןthe flockוּלְכוּand goרְעוּ׃feed them

   And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.

8. 8

   וַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidלֹאnotנוּכַלcan weעַדuntilאֲשֶׁרthatיֵאָסְפוּare gatheredכׇּל־הָעֲדָרִיםall the flocksוְגָלְלוּand they rollאֶת־הָאֶבֶןthe stoneמֵעַלfrom uponפִּיthe mouth ofהַבְּאֵרthe wellוְהִשְׁקִינוּand we will waterהַצֹּאן׃the flock

   And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.

   עוֹדֶנּוּwhile he stillמְדַבֵּרspeaksעִמָּםwith themוְרָחֵלand Rachelבָּאָהcomesעִם־הַצֹּאןwith the flockאֲשֶׁרwhichלְאָבִיהָher father'sכִּיforרֹעָהwas a shepherdessהִוא׃she

   And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them.

    וַיְהִיand it came to passכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenרָאָהhe sawיַעֲקֹבJacobאֶת־רָחֵלRachelבַּת־לָבָןdaughter of Labanאֲחִיthe brother ofאִמּוֹhis motherוְאֶת־צֹאןand flocksלָבָןLabanאֲחִיthe brother ofאִמּוֹhis motherוַיִּגַּשׁand he drew nearיַעֲקֹבJacobוַיָּגֶלand he rolledאֶת־הָאֶבֶןthe stoneמֵעַלfrom uponפִּיthe mouth ofהַבְּאֵרthe wellוַיַּשְׁקְand he wateredאֶת־צֹאןflocksלָבָןLabanאֲחִיthe brother ofאִמּוֹ׃his mother

    And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.

11. 11

    וַיִּשַּׁקand he kissedיַעֲקֹבJacobלְרָחֵלRachelוַיִּשָּׂאand lifted upאֶת־קֹלוֹhis voiceוַיֵּבְךְּ׃and he wept

    And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

12. 12

    וַיַּגֵּדand toldיַעֲקֹבJacobלְרָחֵלRachelכִּיthatאֲחִיthe brother ofאָבִיהָher fatherהוּאheוְכִיand ifבֶן־רִבְקָהthe son of Rebekahהוּאheוַתָּרׇץand she ranוַתַּגֵּדand toldלְאָבִיהָ׃her father

    And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.

13. 13

    וַיְהִיand it came to passכִשְׁמֹעַwhen heardלָבָןLabanאֶת־שֵׁמַעthe report ofיַעֲקֹבJacobבֶּן־אֲחֹתוֹhis sister's sonוַיָּרׇץand he ranלִקְרָאתוֹto meet himוַיְחַבֶּק־לוֹand he embraced himוַיְנַשֶּׁק־לוֹand he kissed himוַיְבִיאֵהוּand he brought himאֶל־בֵּיתוֹto his houseוַיְסַפֵּרand he toldלְלָבָןto Labanאֵת־כׇּל־הַדְּבָרִיםall the wordsהָאֵלֶּה׃these

    And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

14. 14

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלוֹto himלָבָןLabanאַךְbutעַצְמִיmy boneוּבְשָׂרִיand my fleshאָתָּהyou areוַיֵּשֶׁבand he dweltעִמּוֹwith himחֹדֶשׁa month ofיָמִים׃days

    And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.

15. 15

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָבָןLabanלְיַעֲקֹבto Jacobהֲכִי־אָחִיindeed my brotherאַתָּהyouוַעֲבַדְתַּנִיand you will serve meחִנָּםfor nothingהַגִּידָהtellלִּיto meמַה־מַּשְׂכֻּרְתֶּךָ׃what shall your wages be

    And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?

16. 16

    וּלְלָבָןand to Labanשְׁתֵּיtwoבָנוֹתdaughtersשֵׁםthe name ofהַגְּדֹלָהthe greatלֵאָהLeahוְשֵׁםand the name ofהַקְּטַנָּהthe youngerרָחֵל׃Rachel

    And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

17. 17

    וְעֵינֵיnow the eyes ofלֵאָהLeahרַכּוֹתwere tenderוְרָחֵלand Rachelהָיְתָהwasיְפַת־תֹּאַרfair of formוִיפַתand fair ofמַרְאֶה׃appearance

    Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.

18. 18

    וַיֶּאֱהַבand he lovedיַעֲקֹבJacobאֶת־רָחֵלRachelוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֶעֱבׇדְךָI will serve youשֶׁבַעsevenשָׁנִיםyearsבְּרָחֵלfor Rachelבִּתְּךָyour daughterהַקְּטַנָּה׃the younger

    And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.

19. 19

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָבָןLabanטוֹבgoodתִּתִּיmy givingאֹתָהּherלָךְto youמִתִּתִּיthan my givingאֹתָהּherלְאִישׁfor a manאַחֵרotherשְׁבָהstayעִמָּדִי׃with me

    And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.

20. 20

    וַיַּעֲבֹדand servedיַעֲקֹבJacobבְּרָחֵלfor Rachelשֶׁבַעsevenשָׁנִיםyearsוַיִּהְיוּand they wereבְעֵינָיוin his eyesכְּיָמִיםlike daysאֲחָדִיםa fewבְּאַהֲבָתוֹin his loveאֹתָהּ׃for her

    And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.

21. 21

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיַעֲקֹבJacobאֶל־לָבָןto Labanהָבָהgiveאֶת־אִשְׁתִּיmy wifeכִּיforמָלְאוּare fulfilledיָמָיmy daysוְאָבוֹאָהso I may goאֵלֶיהָ׃to her

    And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.

22. 22

    וַיֶּאֱסֹףand gatheredלָבָןLabanאֶת־כׇּל־אַנְשֵׁיall the men ofהַמָּקוֹםthe placeוַיַּעַשׂand he madeמִשְׁתֶּה׃feast

    And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

23. 23

    וַיְהִיand it came to passבָעֶרֶבin the eveningוַיִּקַּחand tookאֶת־לֵאָהLeahבִתּוֹhis daughterוַיָּבֵאand he broughtאֹתָהּherאֵלָיוto himוַיָּבֹאand cameאֵלֶיהָ׃to her

    And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.

24. 24

    וַיִּתֵּןand gaveלָבָןLabanלָהּto herאֶת־זִלְפָּהZilpahשִׁפְחָתוֹhis maidservantלְלֵאָהto Leahבִתּוֹhis daughterשִׁפְחָה׃a maidservant

    And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.

25. 25

    וַיְהִיand it came to passבַבֹּקֶרin the morningוְהִנֵּה־הִואand behold sheלֵאָהLeahוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֶל־לָבָןto Labanמַה־זֹּאתwhat thisעָשִׂיתָyou didלִּיto meהֲלֹאis it notבְרָחֵלfor Rachelעָבַדְתִּיdid I workעִמָּךְwith youוְלָמָּהand whyרִמִּיתָנִי׃have you deceived me

    And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?

26. 26

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָבָןLabanלֹא־יֵעָשֶׂהnot shall be doneכֵןthusבִּמְקוֹמֵנוּin our placeלָתֵתto giveהַצְּעִירָהthe youngerלִפְנֵיbeforeהַבְּכִירָה׃the firstborn

    And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

27. 27

    מַלֵּאfulfilשְׁבֻעַthe week ofזֹאתthisוְנִתְּנָהand we will giveלְךָfor youגַּם־אֶת־זֹאתalso thisבַּעֲבֹדָהfor the serviceאֲשֶׁרwhichתַּעֲבֹדyou shall serveעִמָּדִיwith meעוֹדyetשֶׁבַע־שָׁנִיםseven yearsאֲחֵרוֹת׃other

    Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.

28. 28

    וַיַּעַשׂand he didיַעֲקֹבJacobכֵּןthusוַיְמַלֵּאand satisfiedשְׁבֻעַthe week ofזֹאתthisוַיִּתֶּן־לוֹand gave to himאֶת־רָחֵלRachelבִּתּוֹhis daughterלוֹto himלְאִשָּׁה׃as a wife

    And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.

29. 29

    וַיִּתֵּןand gaveלָבָןLabanלְרָחֵלRachelבִּתּוֹhis daughterאֶת־בִּלְהָהBilhahשִׁפְחָתוֹhis maidservantלָהּto herלְשִׁפְחָה׃to be a maidservant

    And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.

30. 30

    וַיָּבֹאand cameגַּםalsoאֶל־רָחֵלto Rachelוַיֶּאֱהַבand he lovedגַּם־אֶת־רָחֵלalso Rachelמִלֵּאָהmore than Leahוַיַּעֲבֹדand he shall serveעִמּוֹwith himעוֹדyetשֶׁבַע־שָׁנִיםseven yearsאֲחֵרוֹת׃other

    And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.

31. 31

    וַיַּרְאand sawיְהֹוָהthe LORDכִּי־שְׂנוּאָהbecause was hatedלֵאָהLeahוַיִּפְתַּחand he openedאֶת־רַחְמָהּher wombוְרָחֵלand Rachelעֲקָרָה׃was barren

    And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.

32. 32

    וַתַּהַרand she conceivedלֵאָהLeahוַתֵּלֶדand boreבֵּןa sonוַתִּקְרָאand she calledשְׁמוֹhis nameרְאוּבֵןReubenכִּיbecauseאָמְרָהsaidכִּי־רָאָהbecause sawיְהֹוָהthe LORDבְּעׇנְיִיmy afflictionכִּיbecauseעַתָּהnowיֶאֱהָבַנִיhe will love meאִישִׁי׃my husband

    And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

33. 33

    וַתַּהַרand she conceivedעוֹדagainוַתֵּלֶדand boreבֵּןa sonוַתֹּאמֶרand saidכִּי־שָׁמַעbecause heardיְהֹוָהthe LORDכִּי־שְׂנוּאָהbecause was hatedאָנֹכִיIוַיִּתֶּן־לִיand gave unto meגַּם־אֶת־זֶהalso thisוַתִּקְרָאand she calledשְׁמוֹhis nameשִׁמְעוֹן׃Simeon

    And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.

34. 34

    וַתַּהַרand she conceivedעוֹדagainוַתֵּלֶדand boreבֵּןa sonוַתֹּאמֶרand saidעַתָּהnowהַפַּעַםthis timeיִלָּוֶהhe will join himselfאִישִׁיmy husbandאֵלַיto meכִּי־יָלַדְתִּיbecause I have borneלוֹto himשְׁלֹשָׁהthreeבָנִיםsonsעַל־כֵּןthereforeקָרָא־שְׁמוֹhe called his nameלֵוִי׃Levi

    And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.

35. 35

    וַתַּהַרand she conceivedעוֹדagainוַתֵּלֶדand boreבֵּןa sonוַתֹּאמֶרand saidהַפַּעַםthis timeאוֹדֶהI will praiseאֶת־יְהֹוָהthe LORDעַל־כֵּןthereforeקָרְאָהshe calledשְׁמוֹhis nameיְהוּדָהJudahוַתַּעֲמֹדand she ceasedמִלֶּדֶת׃from bearing children

    And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
