1. 1

   וַיְהִיand it came to passרָעָבa famineבָּאָרֶץin the landמִלְּבַדbesidesהָרָעָבthe famineהָרִאשׁוֹןthe firstאֲשֶׁרwhichהָיָהwasבִּימֵיin the days ofאַבְרָהָםAbrahamוַיֵּלֶךְand wentיִצְחָקIsaacאֶל־אֲבִימֶלֶךְto Abimelechמֶלֶךְ־פְּלִשְׁתִּיםking of Philistinesגְּרָרָה׃toward Gerar

   And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

2. 2

   וַיֵּרָאand appearedאֵלָיוto himיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאַל־תֵּרֵדdo not go downמִצְרָיְמָהto Egyptשְׁכֹןdwellבָּאָרֶץin the landאֲשֶׁרwhichאֹמַרI sayאֵלֶיךָ׃to you

   And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

   גּוּרsojournבָּאָרֶץin the landהַזֹּאתthisוְאֶהְיֶהso I may beעִמְּךָwith youוַאֲבָרְכֶךָּand I will bless youכִּי־לְךָbecause for youוּלְזַרְעֲךָand to your offspringאֶתֵּןI will giveאֶת־כׇּל־הָאֲרָצֹתall the landsהָאֵלtheseוַהֲקִמֹתִיand I will establishאֶת־הַשְּׁבֻעָהthe oathאֲשֶׁרwhichנִשְׁבַּעְתִּיI sworeלְאַבְרָהָםunto Abrahamאָבִיךָ׃your father

   Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

   וְהִרְבֵּיתִיand I will multiplyאֶת־זַרְעֲךָyour seedכְּכוֹכְבֵיlike the stars ofהַשָּׁמַיִםthe heavensוְנָתַתִּיand I will giveלְזַרְעֲךָunto your seedאֵת־כׇּל־הָאֲרָצֹתall the landsהָאֵלtheseוְהִתְבָּרְכוּand they will bless themselvesבְזַרְעֲךָin your seedכֹּלallגּוֹיֵיnations ofהָאָרֶץ׃the earth

   And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

   עֵקֶבbecauseאֲשֶׁר־שָׁמַעwhich heardאַבְרָהָםAbrahamבְּקֹלִיmy voiceוַיִּשְׁמֹרand he did keepמִשְׁמַרְתִּיmy chargeמִצְוֺתַיmy commandmentsחֻקּוֹתַיmy statutesוְתוֹרֹתָי׃and my laws

   Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

6. 6

   וַיֵּשֶׁבand he dweltיִצְחָקIsaacבִּגְרָר׃in Gerar

   And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:

7. 7

   וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּand askedאַנְשֵׁיthe men ofהַמָּקוֹםthe placeלְאִשְׁתּוֹabout his wifeוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲחֹתִיmy sisterהִואsheכִּיbecauseיָרֵאhe fearedלֵאמֹרsayingאִשְׁתִּיmy wifeפֶּן־יַהַרְגֻנִיlest they should kill meאַנְשֵׁיthe men ofהַמָּקוֹםthe placeעַל־רִבְקָהupon Rebekahכִּי־טוֹבַתbecause fair ofמַרְאֶהappearanceהִוא׃she

   And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.

   וַיְהִיand it came to passכִּיthatאָרְכוּ־לוֹhe had been long thereשָׁםthereהַיָּמִיםthe daysוַיַּשְׁקֵףand looked outאֲבִימֶלֶךְAbimelechמֶלֶךְthe king ofפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPhilistinesבְּעַדthroughהַחַלּוֹןthe windowוַיַּרְאand sawוְהִנֵּהand beholdיִצְחָקIsaacמְצַחֵקmockingאֵת־רִבְקָהRebekahאִשְׁתּוֹ׃his wife

   And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

9. 9

   וַיִּקְרָאand calledאֲבִימֶלֶךְAbimelechלְיִצְחָקfor Isaacוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאַךְbutהִנֵּהbeholdאִשְׁתְּךָyour wifeהִואsheוְאֵיךְand howאָמַרְתָּhave saidאֲחֹתִיmy sisterהִואsheוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוto himיִצְחָקIsaacכִּיbecauseאָמַרְתִּיI saidפֶּן־אָמוּתlest I shall dieעָלֶיהָ׃upon it

   And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲבִימֶלֶךְAbimelechמַה־זֹּאתwhat thisעָשִׂיתָyou didלָּנוּto usכִּמְעַטlightlyשָׁכַבlayאַחַדoneהָעָםof the peopleאֶת־אִשְׁתֶּךָyour wifeוְהֵבֵאתָand you will bringעָלֵינוּover usאָשָׁם׃guilt

    And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.

11. 11

    וַיְצַוand commandedאֲבִימֶלֶךְAbimelechאֶת־כׇּל־הָעָםall the peopleלֵאמֹרsayingהַנֹּגֵעַwho touchesבָּאִישׁthe manהַזֶּהthisוּבְאִשְׁתּוֹand against his wifeמוֹתsurelyיוּמָת׃shall be put to death

    And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

12. 12

    וַיִּזְרַעand he sowedיִצְחָקIsaacבָּאָרֶץin the landהַהִואthatוַיִּמְצָאand foundבַּשָּׁנָהin the yearהַהִואthatמֵאָהa hundredשְׁעָרִיםfoldוַיְבָרְכֵהוּand blessed himיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

    Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.

13. 13

    וַיִּגְדַּלand it grewהָאִישׁthe manוַיֵּלֶךְand wentהָלוֹךְgoing onוְגָדֵלand grewעַדuntilכִּי־גָדַלbecause grewמְאֹד׃exceedingly

    And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:

14. 14

    וַיְהִי־לוֹand it came to pass himמִקְנֵה־צֹאןpossessions of flocksוּמִקְנֵהand possessions ofבָקָרherdוַעֲבֻדָּהand servantsרַבָּהmuchוַיְקַנְאוּand they enviedאֹתוֹhimפְּלִשְׁתִּים׃Philistines

    For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.

15. 15

    וְכׇל־הַבְּאֵרֹתand all the wellsאֲשֶׁרwhichחָפְרוּthey had dugעַבְדֵיservants ofאָבִיוhis fatherבִּימֵיin the days ofאַבְרָהָםAbrahamאָבִיוhis fatherסִתְּמוּםthey stopped up themפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPhilistinesוַיְמַלְאוּםand filled them withעָפָר׃earth

    For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.

16. 16

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲבִימֶלֶךְAbimelechאֶל־יִצְחָקto Isaacלֵךְgoמֵעִמָּנוּfrom with usכִּי־עָצַמְתָּbecause you have become too powerfulמִמֶּנּוּthan weמְאֹד׃exceedingly

    And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.

17. 17

    וַיֵּלֶךְand wentמִשָּׁםfrom thereיִצְחָקIsaacוַיִּחַןand he encampedבְּנַחַל־גְּרָרin the wadi of Gerarוַיֵּשֶׁבand he dweltשָׁם׃there

    And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

18. 18

    וַיָּשׇׁבand returnedיִצְחָקIsaacוַיַּחְפֹּרand he dugאֶת־בְּאֵרֹתthe wells ofהַמַּיִםthe watersאֲשֶׁרwhichחָפְרוּthey had dugבִּימֵיin the days ofאַבְרָהָםAbrahamאָבִיוhis fatherוַיְסַתְּמוּםand they had stopped up themפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPhilistinesאַחֲרֵיafterמוֹתthe death ofאַבְרָהָםAbrahamוַיִּקְרָאand calledלָהֶןfor themשֵׁמוֹתnamesכַּשֵּׁמֹתlike the namesאֲשֶׁר־קָרָאwhich calledלָהֶןfor themאָבִיו׃his father

    And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

19. 19

    וַיַּחְפְּרוּand they dugעַבְדֵי־יִצְחָקservants of Isaacבַּנָּחַלin the riverוַיִּמְצְאוּ־שָׁםand found thereבְּאֵרa well ofמַיִםwaterחַיִּים׃living

    And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

20. 20

    וַיָּרִיבוּand quarrelledרֹעֵיpastors ofגְרָרGerarעִם־רֹעֵיwith pastors ofיִצְחָקIsaacלֵאמֹרsayingלָנוּoursהַמָּיִםthe waterוַיִּקְרָאand calledשֵׁם־הַבְּאֵרname of the wellעֵשֶׂקEsekכִּיbecauseהִתְעַשְּׂקוּthey quarreledעִמּוֹ׃with him

    And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.

21. 21

    וַיַּחְפְּרוּand they dugבְּאֵרa wellאַחֶרֶתanotherוַיָּרִיבוּand quarrelledגַּם־עָלֶיהָalso upon itוַיִּקְרָאand calledשְׁמָהּthereשִׂטְנָה׃Sitnah

    And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.

22. 22

    וַיַּעְתֵּקand he moved onמִשָּׁםfrom thereוַיַּחְפֹּרand he dugבְּאֵרa wellאַחֶרֶתanotherוְלֹאand notרָבוּthey quarrelledעָלֶיהָupon itוַיִּקְרָאand calledשְׁמָהּthereרְחֹבוֹתRehobothוַיֹּאמֶרand saidכִּי־עַתָּהbecause nowהִרְחִיבbroadenedיְהֹוָהthe LORDלָנוּto usוּפָרִינוּand we will be fruitfulבָאָרֶץ׃in the land

    And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

23. 23

    וַיַּעַלand he ascendedמִשָּׁםfrom thereבְּאֵרBeer-שָׁבַע׃sheba

    And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba.

24. 24

    וַיֵּרָאand appearedאֵלָיוto himיְהֹוָהthe LORDבַּלַּיְלָהin the nightהַהוּאthatוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאָנֹכִיIאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofאַבְרָהָםAbrahamאָבִיךָyour fatherאַל־תִּירָאbe not afraidכִּי־אִתְּךָbecause with youאָנֹכִיIוּבֵרַכְתִּיךָand I will bless youוְהִרְבֵּיתִיand I will multiplyאֶת־זַרְעֲךָyour seedבַּעֲבוּרbecause ofאַבְרָהָםAbrahamעַבְדִּי׃my servant

    And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

25. 25

    וַיִּבֶןand builtשָׁםthereמִזְבֵּחַan altarוַיִּקְרָאand calledבְּשֵׁםin the name ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיֶּט־שָׁםand pitched thereאׇהֳלוֹhis tentוַיִּכְרוּ־שָׁםand dug thereעַבְדֵי־יִצְחָקservants of Isaacבְּאֵר׃a well

    And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.

26. 26

    וַאֲבִימֶלֶךְand Abimelechהָלַךְwentאֵלָיוto himמִגְּרָרfrom Gerarוַאֲחֻזַּתand Ahuzzathמֵרֵעֵהוּhis friendוּפִיכֹלand Phicholשַׂר־צְבָאוֹ׃the captain of his host

    Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.

27. 27

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵהֶםunto themיִצְחָקIsaacמַדּוּעַwhyבָּאתֶםhave you comeאֵלָיunto meוְאַתֶּםand youשְׂנֵאתֶםyou hateאֹתִיmeוַתְּשַׁלְּחוּנִיand you sent me awayמֵאִתְּכֶם׃of you

    And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?

28. 28

    וַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidרָאוֹindeedרָאִינוּwe sawכִּי־הָיָהbecause wasיְהֹוָהthe LORDעִמָּךְwith youוַנֹּאמֶרand we saidתְּהִיlet it beנָאI prayאָלָהan oathבֵּינוֹתֵינוּbetween usבֵּינֵינוּamong usוּבֵינֶךָand between youוְנִכְרְתָהand let us makeבְרִיתa covenantעִמָּךְ׃with you

    And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;

29. 29

    אִם־תַּעֲשֵׂהif you shall makeעִמָּנוּwith usרָעָהevilכַּאֲשֶׁרasלֹאnotנְגַעֲנוּךָwe have touched youוְכַאֲשֶׁרand asעָשִׂינוּwe have doneעִמְּךָwith youרַק־טוֹבonly goodוַנְּשַׁלֵּחֲךָand we sent away youבְּשָׁלוֹםin peaceאַתָּהyouעַתָּהnowבְּרוּךְO one blessed ofיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

    That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.

30. 30

    וַיַּעַשׂand he madeלָהֶםto themמִשְׁתֶּהfeastוַיֹּאכְלוּand they ateוַיִּשְׁתּוּ׃and they did drink

    And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.

31. 31

    וַיַּשְׁכִּימוּand they rose earlyבַבֹּקֶרin the morningוַיִּשָּׁבְעוּand they sworeאִישׁoneלְאָחִיוto anotherוַיְשַׁלְּחֵםand he sent away themיִצְחָקIsaacוַיֵּלְכוּand they wentמֵאִתּוֹfrom himבְּשָׁלוֹם׃in peace

    And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

32. 32

    וַיְהִיand it came to passבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatוַיָּבֹאוּand they cameעַבְדֵיservants ofיִצְחָקIsaacוַיַּגִּדוּand they toldלוֹto himעַל־אֹדוֹתconcerningהַבְּאֵרthe wellאֲשֶׁרwhichחָפָרוּthey had dugוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidלוֹto himמָצָאנוּwe have foundמָיִם׃water

    And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.

33. 33

    וַיִּקְרָאand calledאֹתָהּitשִׁבְעָהShibahעַל־כֵּןthereforeשֵׁם־הָעִירthe name of the cityבְּאֵרBeer-שֶׁבַעshebaעַדuntilהַיּוֹםthe dayהַזֶּה׃this

    And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day.

34. 34

    וַיְהִיand it came to passעֵשָׂוEsauבֶּן־אַרְבָּעִיםson of fortyשָׁנָהyearsוַיִּקַּחand tookאִשָּׁהa womanאֶת־יְהוּדִיתJudithבַּת־בְּאֵרִיdaughter of Beeriהַחִתִּיthe Hittiteוְאֶת־בָּשְׂמַתand Bashemathבַּת־אֵילֹןdaughter of Elonהַחִתִּי׃the Hittite

    And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:

35. 35

    וַתִּהְיֶיןָand they wereמֹרַתbitterness ofרוּחַthe spirit ofלְיִצְחָקfor Isaacוּלְרִבְקָה׃and to Rebekah

    Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
