Genesis 16 בְּרֵאשִׁית פרק ט״ז

1. 1

   וְשָׂרַיand Saraiאֵשֶׁתthe wife ofאַבְרָםAbramלֹאnotיָלְדָהshe boreלוֹto himוְלָהּand she hadשִׁפְחָהa maidservantמִצְרִיתEgyptianוּשְׁמָהּand her name wasהָגָר׃Hagar

   Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

2. 2

   וַתֹּאמֶרand saidשָׂרַיSaraiאֶל־אַבְרָםto Abramהִנֵּה־נָאbehold I prayעֲצָרַנִיhas restrained meיְהֹוָהthe LORDמִלֶּדֶתfrom bearing childrenבֹּא־נָאcome I prayאֶל־שִׁפְחָתִיto my maidservantאוּלַיperhapsאִבָּנֶהI will be built upמִמֶּנָּהby herוַיִּשְׁמַעand he heardאַבְרָםAbramלְקוֹלthe voice ofשָׂרָי׃Sarai

   And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

   וַתִּקַּחand she tookשָׂרַיSaraiאֵשֶׁת־אַבְרָםthe wife of Abramאֶת־הָגָרHagarהַמִּצְרִיתthe Egyptianשִׁפְחָתָהּher maidservantמִקֵּץafterעֶשֶׂרtenשָׁנִיםyearsלְשֶׁבֶתof the dwelling ofאַבְרָםAbramבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofכְּנָעַןCanaanוַתִּתֵּןand she gaveאֹתָהּherלְאַבְרָםto Abramאִישָׁהּher husbandלוֹto himלְאִשָּׁה׃for wife

   And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

4. 4

   וַיָּבֹאand cameאֶל־הָגָרto Hagarוַתַּהַרand she conceivedוַתֵּרֶאand sawכִּיthatהָרָתָהshe had conceivedוַתֵּקַלthen became despisedגְּבִרְתָּהּher mistressבְּעֵינֶיהָ׃in her eyes

   And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

   וַתֹּאמֶרand saidשָׂרַיSaraiאֶל־אַבְרָםto Abramחֲמָסִיmy wrong beעָלֶיךָupon youאָנֹכִיIנָתַתִּיI gaveשִׁפְחָתִיmy maidservantבְּחֵיקֶךָinto your embraceוַתֵּרֶאand sawכִּיthatהָרָתָהshe had conceivedוָאֵקַלthen I became despisedבְּעֵינֶיהָin her eyesיִשְׁפֹּטjudgeיְהֹוָהthe LORDבֵּינִיbetween meוּבֵינֶיׄךָ׃and between you

   And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.

6. 6

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאַבְרָםAbramאֶל־שָׂרַיto Saraiהִנֵּהbeholdשִׁפְחָתֵךְyour maidservantבְּיָדֵךְis in your handעֲשִׂי־לָהּdo to herהַטּוֹבwhat is goodבְּעֵינָיִךְin your eyesוַתְּעַנֶּהָand dealt harshly with herשָׂרַיSaraiוַתִּבְרַחand she fledמִפָּנֶיהָ׃from before her

   But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

7. 7

   וַיִּמְצָאָהּand he found herמַלְאַךְthe Angel ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDעַל־עֵיןby a spring ofהַמַּיִםthe watersבַּמִּדְבָּרin the wildernessעַל־הָעַיִןupon the springבְּדֶרֶךְon the way toשׁוּר׃Shur

   And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

8. 8

   וַיֹּאמַרand saidהָגָרHagarשִׁפְחַתthe maidservant ofשָׂרַיSaraiאֵי־מִזֶּהfrom whereבָאתhave you comeוְאָנָהand whereתֵלֵכִיare you goingוַתֹּאמֶרand saidמִפְּנֵיbecause ofשָׂרַיSaraiגְּבִרְתִּיmy mistressאָנֹכִיIבֹּרַחַת׃am fleeing

   And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

9. 9

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהּto herמַלְאַךְthe Angel ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDשׁוּבִיreturnאֶל־גְּבִרְתֵּךְto your mistressוְהִתְעַנִּיand submit yourselfתַּחַתunderיָדֶיהָ׃her hands

   And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

10. 10

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהּto herמַלְאַךְthe Angel ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDהַרְבָּהsurelyאַרְבֶּהI will multiplyאֶת־זַרְעֵךְyour offspringוְלֹאand notיִסָּפֵרit will be countedמֵרֹב׃for multitude

    And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

11. 11

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהּto herמַלְאַךְthe Angel ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDהִנָּךְbehold youהָרָהhave conceivedוְיֹלַדְתְּand you will bearבֵּןa sonוְקָרָאתand shall callשְׁמוֹhis nameיִשְׁמָעֵאלIshmaelכִּי־שָׁמַעbecause heardיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־עׇנְיֵךְ׃to your affliction

    And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

12. 12

    וְהוּאand heיִהְיֶהshall beפֶּרֶאa wild ass ofאָדָםa manיָדוֹhis handבַכֹּלagainst every manוְיַדand the hand ofכֹּלallבּוֹin itוְעַל־פְּנֵיand upon the face ofכׇל־אֶחָיוall his brothersיִשְׁכֹּן׃he shall dwell

    And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

13. 13

    וַתִּקְרָאand she calledשֵׁם־יְהֹוָהname of the LORDהַדֹּבֵרwho spokeאֵלֶיהָto herאַתָּהyouאֵלGod ofרֳאִיseeing meכִּיforאָמְרָהsaidהֲגַםis it alsoהֲלֹםhereרָאִיתִיI sawאַחֲרֵיafterרֹאִי׃the one who sees me

    And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

14. 14

    עַל־כֵּןthereforeקָרָאcalledלַבְּאֵרthe wellבְּאֵרBeer-לַחַיlahai-רֹאִיroiהִנֵּהbeholdבֵין־קָדֵשׁit is between Kadeshוּבֵיןand betweenבָּרֶד׃Bered

    Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

15. 15

    וַתֵּלֶדand boreהָגָרHagarלְאַבְרָםto Abramבֵּןa sonוַיִּקְרָאand calledאַבְרָםAbramשֶׁם־בְּנוֹthe name of his sonאֲשֶׁר־יָלְדָהwhom boreהָגָרHagarיִשְׁמָעֵאל׃Ishmael

    And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

16. 16

    וְאַבְרָםand Abramבֶּן־שְׁמֹנִיםson of eightyשָׁנָהyearsוְשֵׁשׁand sixשָׁנִיםyearsבְּלֶדֶת־הָגָרwhen bore Hagarאֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵאלIshmaelלְאַבְרָם׃to Abram

    And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
