1. 1

   אַחַרafterהַדְּבָרִיםthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהtheseהָיָהwasדְבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDאֶל־אַבְרָםto Abramבַּמַּחֲזֶהin the visionלֵאמֹרsayingאַל־תִּירָאbe not afraidאַבְרָםAbramאָנֹכִיIמָגֵןa shieldלָךְto youשְׂכָרְךָyour rewardהַרְבֵּהexceedingמְאֹד׃exceedingly

   After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאַבְרָםAbramאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODמַה־תִּתֶּן־לִיnot you shall giveוְאָנֹכִיyet Iהוֹלֵךְgoingעֲרִירִיchildlessוּבֶן־מֶשֶׁקand the steward ofבֵּיתִיmy houseהוּאisדַּמֶּשֶׂקDamascusאֱלִיעֶזֶר׃Eliezer

   And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

3. 3

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאַבְרָםAbramהֵןbeholdלִיto meלֹאnotנָתַתָּהYou have givenזָרַעseedוְהִנֵּהand beholdבֶן־בֵּיתִיof my householdיוֹרֵשׁan heirאֹתִי׃my heir

   And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

4. 4

   וְהִנֵּהand beholdדְבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDאֵלָיוto himלֵאמֹרsayingלֹאnotיִירָשְׁךָshall be your heirזֶהthisכִּי־אִםbut ratherאֲשֶׁרone whoיֵצֵאwill comeמִמֵּעֶיךָfrom your own bodyהוּאheיִירָשֶׁךָ׃he will inherit you

   And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

   וַיּוֹצֵאand He broughtאֹתוֹhimהַחוּצָהoutsideוַיֹּאמֶרand saidהַבֶּט־נָאlook nowהַשָּׁמַיְמָהtoward heavenוּסְפֹרand countהַכּוֹכָבִיםthe starsאִם־תּוּכַלif you are ableלִסְפֹּרnumberאֹתָםthemוַיֹּאמֶרand saidלוֹto himכֹּהthusיִהְיֶהshall beזַרְעֶךָ׃your seed

   And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

6. 6

   וְהֶאֱמִןand he believedבַּיהֹוָהin the LORDוַיַּחְשְׁבֶהָand he credited itלּוֹto himצְדָקָה׃righteousness

   And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

7. 7

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוto himאֲנִיIיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֲשֶׁרwhoהוֹצֵאתִיךָbrought you outמֵאוּרfrom Urכַּשְׂדִּיםof the Chaldeesלָתֶתto giveלְךָfor youאֶת־הָאָרֶץthe landהַזֹּאתthisלְרִשְׁתָּהּ׃to possess it

   And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

8. 8

   וַיֹּאמַרand saidאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODבַּמָּהby whatאֵדַעI shall knowכִּיthatאִירָשֶׁנָּה׃I will take possession of it

   And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?

9. 9

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוto himקְחָהtakeלִיto meעֶגְלָהa heiferמְשֻׁלֶּשֶׁתthree years oldוְעֵזand a goatמְשֻׁלֶּשֶׁתthree years oldוְאַיִלand a ramמְשֻׁלָּשׁthree years oldוְתֹרand a turtle doveוְגוֹזָל׃and a young pigeon

   And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.

10. 10

    וַיִּקַּח־לוֹand took to himאֶת־כׇּל־אֵלֶּהall theseוַיְבַתֵּרand he cut in piecesאֹתָםthemבַּתָּוֶךְin the midstוַיִּתֵּןand gaveאִישׁ־בִּתְרוֹeach his pieceלִקְרַאתoppositeרֵעֵהוּhis neighborוְאֶת־הַצִּפֹּרand the birdלֹאnotבָתָר׃he cut in two

    And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.

11. 11

    וַיֵּרֶדand came downהָעַיִטthe birds of preyעַל־הַפְּגָרִיםupon the corpsesוַיַּשֵּׁבand he drove awayאֹתָםthemאַבְרָם׃Abram

    And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.

12. 12

    וַיְהִיand came to passהַשֶּׁמֶשׁthe sunלָבוֹאto comeוְתַרְדֵּמָהand a deep sleepנָפְלָהfellעַל־אַבְרָםupon Abramוְהִנֵּהand beholdאֵימָהterrorחֲשֵׁכָהdarknessגְדֹלָהgreatנֹפֶלֶתwas fallingעָלָיו׃upon him

    And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

13. 13

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלְאַבְרָםAbramיָדֹעַsurelyתֵּדַעyou knowכִּי־גֵרbecause a sojournerיִהְיֶהshall beזַרְעֲךָyour seedבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofלֹאnotלָהֶםto themוַעֲבָדוּםand they will serve themוְעִנּוּand they will afflictאֹתָםthemאַרְבַּעfourמֵאוֹתhundredשָׁנָה׃years

    And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

14. 14

    וְגַםand alsoאֶת־הַגּוֹיthe nationאֲשֶׁרwhomיַעֲבֹדוּthey will serveדָּןwill judgeאָנֹכִיIוְאַחֲרֵי־כֵןand afterwardיֵצְאוּgo forthבִּרְכֻשׁwith possessionsגָּדוֹל׃great

    And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

15. 15

    וְאַתָּהand youתָּבוֹאshall comeאֶל־אֲבֹתֶיךָto your fathersבְּשָׁלוֹםin peaceתִּקָּבֵרyou will be buriedבְּשֵׂיבָהin old ageטוֹבָה׃good

    And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

16. 16

    וְדוֹרand the generationרְבִיעִיfourthיָשׁוּבוּshall returnהֵנָּהhitherכִּיforלֹא־שָׁלֵםnot yet completeעֲוֺןthe iniquity ofהָאֱמֹרִיthe Amoriteעַד־הֵנָּה׃hitherto

    But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

17. 17

    וַיְהִיand came to passהַשֶּׁמֶשׁthe sunבָּאָהwent downוַעֲלָטָהand darknessהָיָהwasוְהִנֵּהand beholdתַנּוּרa fire pot ofעָשָׁןsmokeוְלַפִּידand a torch ofאֵשׁfireאֲשֶׁרwhichעָבַרpassedבֵּיןbetweenהַגְּזָרִיםthe piecesהָאֵלֶּה׃these

    And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.

18. 18

    בַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatכָּרַתmadeיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־אַבְרָםAbramבְּרִיתcovenant ofלֵאמֹרsayingלְזַרְעֲךָunto your seedנָתַתִּיI have givenאֶת־הָאָרֶץthe landהַזֹּאתthisמִנְּהַרfrom the river ofמִצְרַיִםEgyptעַד־הַנָּהָרuntil the riverהַגָּדֹלthe greatנְהַר־פְּרָת׃river of Euphrates

    In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

19. 19

    אֶת־הַקֵּינִיthe Kenitesוְאֶת־הַקְּנִזִּיand the Kenizzitesוְאֵתandהַקַּדְמֹנִי׃the Kadmonites

    The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,

20. 20

    וְאֶת־הַחִתִּיand the Hittitesוְאֶת־הַפְּרִזִּיand the Perizziteוְאֶת־הָרְפָאִים׃and the Rephaim

    And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,

21. 21

    וְאֶת־הָאֱמֹרִיand the Amoriteוְאֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִיand the Canaaniteוְאֶת־הַגִּרְגָּשִׁיand the Girgashiteוְאֶת־הַיְבוּסִי׃and the Jebusite

    And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
