Genesis 17 בְּרֵאשִׁית פרק י״ז

1. 1

   וַיְהִיwhen wasאַבְרָםAbramבֶּן־תִּשְׁעִיםninetyשָׁנָהyearsוְתֵשַׁעand nineשָׁנִיםyears oldוַיֵּרָאappearedיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־אַבְרָםto Abramוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוto himאֲנִי־אֵלI am GodשַׁדַּיAlmightyהִתְהַלֵּךְwalkלְפָנַיbefore meוֶהְיֵהand beתָמִים׃perfect

   And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

2. 2

   וְאֶתְּנָהand I will setבְרִיתִיmy covenantבֵּינִיbetween meוּבֵינֶךָand between youוְאַרְבֶּהand I will multiplyאוֹתְךָyouבִּמְאֹדveryמְאֹד׃greatly

   And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

   וַיִּפֹּלand fellאַבְרָםAbramעַל־פָּנָיוupon his faceוַיְדַבֵּרand spokeאִתּוֹwith himאֱלֹהִיםGodלֵאמֹר׃saying

   And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

4. 4

   אֲנִיas for meהִנֵּהbeholdבְרִיתִיmy covenantאִתָּךְis with youוְהָיִיתָand you shall beלְאַבa father ofהֲמוֹןa multitude ofגּוֹיִם׃nations

   As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

5. 5

   וְלֹא־יִקָּרֵאand shall not be calledעוֹדanymoreאֶת־שִׁמְךָyour nameאַבְרָםAbramוְהָיָהbut shall beשִׁמְךָyour nameאַבְרָהָםAbrahamכִּיforאַב־הֲמוֹןa father of a multitude ofגּוֹיִםnationsנְתַתִּיךָ׃I have made you

   Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

6. 6

   וְהִפְרֵתִיand I will make fruitfulאֹתְךָyouבִּמְאֹדveryמְאֹדgreatlyוּנְתַתִּיךָand I will make youלְגוֹיִםinto nationsוּמְלָכִיםand kingsמִמְּךָfrom youיֵצֵאוּ׃shall come forth

   And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

   וַהֲקִמֹתִיand I will establishאֶת־בְּרִיתִיmy covenantבֵּינִיbetween meוּבֵינֶךָand between youוּבֵיןand betweenזַרְעֲךָyour seedאַחֲרֶיךָafter youלְדֹרֹתָםthroughout their generationsלִבְרִיתas a covenant ofעוֹלָםeverlastingלִהְיוֹתto beלְךָto youלֵאלֹהִיםas Godוּלְזַרְעֲךָand to your seedאַחֲרֶיךָ׃after you

   And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

8. 8

   וְנָתַתִּיand I will giveלְךָto youוּלְזַרְעֲךָand to your seedאַחֲרֶיךָafter youאֵת־אֶרֶץthe land ofמְגֻרֶיךָyour sojourningsאֵת־כׇּל־אֶרֶץall the land ofכְּנַעַןCanaanלַאֲחֻזַּתas a possession ofעוֹלָםeverlastingוְהָיִיתִיand I will beלָהֶםto themלֵאלֹהִים׃as God

   And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

9. 9

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֱלֹהִיםGodאֶל־אַבְרָהָםto Abrahamוְאַתָּהand youאֶת־בְּרִיתִיmy covenantתִשְׁמֹרshall keepאַתָּהyouוְזַרְעֲךָand your seedאַחֲרֶיךָafter youלְדֹרֹתָם׃throughout their generations

   And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

10. 10

    זֹאתthis isבְּרִיתִיmy covenantאֲשֶׁרwhichתִּשְׁמְרוּyou shall keepבֵּינִיbetween meוּבֵינֵיכֶםand between youוּבֵיןand betweenזַרְעֲךָyour seedאַחֲרֶיךָafter youהִמּוֹלto circumciseלָכֶםfor youכׇּל־זָכָר׃every male

    This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

11. 11

    וּנְמַלְתֶּםand you shall circumciseאֵת־בְּשַׂרthe flesh ofעׇרְלַתְכֶםyour foreskinוְהָיָהand it shall beלְאוֹתa sign ofבְּרִיתthe covenantבֵּינִיbetween meוּבֵינֵיכֶם׃and between you

    And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

12. 12

    וּבֶן־שְׁמֹנַתand at eightיָמִיםdays oldיִמּוֹלshall be circumcisedלָכֶםamong youכׇּל־זָכָרevery maleלְדֹרֹתֵיכֶםthroughout your generationsיְלִידone born inבָּיִתthe householdוּמִקְנַת־כֶּסֶףor bought with moneyמִכֹּלfrom anyבֶּן־נֵכָרforeignerאֲשֶׁרwhoלֹאis notמִזַּרְעֲךָof your seedהוּא׃is he

    And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.

13. 13

    הִמּוֹלsurelyיִמּוֹלshall be circumcisedיְלִידone born inבֵּיתְךָyour householdוּמִקְנַתand one bought withכַּסְפֶּךָyour moneyוְהָיְתָהand shall beבְרִיתִיmy covenantבִּבְשַׂרְכֶםin your fleshלִבְרִיתas a covenant ofעוֹלָם׃everlasting

    He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

14. 14

    וְעָרֵלand an uncircumcisedזָכָרmaleאֲשֶׁרwhoלֹא־יִמּוֹלshall not circumciseאֶת־בְּשַׂרthe flesh ofעׇרְלָתוֹhis foreskinוְנִכְרְתָהshall be cut offהַנֶּפֶשׁthe soulהַהִואthatמֵעַמֶּיהָfrom its peopleאֶת־בְּרִיתִיmy covenantהֵפַר׃he has broken

    And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

15. 15

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֱלֹהִיםGodאֶל־אַבְרָהָםto AbrahamשָׂרַיSaraiאִשְׁתְּךָyour wifeלֹא־תִקְרָאyou shall not callאֶת־שְׁמָהּher nameשָׂרָיSaraiכִּיforשָׂרָהSarahשְׁמָהּ׃is her name

    And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

16. 16

    וּבֵרַכְתִּיand I will blessאֹתָהּherוְגַםand alsoנָתַתִּיI will giveמִמֶּנָּהfrom herלְךָto youבֵּןa sonוּבֵרַכְתִּיהָand I will bless herוְהָיְתָהand she shall becomeלְגוֹיִםnationsמַלְכֵיkings ofעַמִּיםpeoplesמִמֶּנָּהfrom herיִהְיוּ׃shall come

    And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

17. 17

    וַיִּפֹּלand fellאַבְרָהָםAbrahamעַל־פָּנָיוupon his faceוַיִּצְחָקand laughedוַיֹּאמֶרand saidבְּלִבּוֹin his heartהַלְּבֶןshall to a son ofמֵאָה־שָׁנָהa hundred yearsיִוָּלֵדbe bornוְאִם־שָׂרָהand shall Sarahהֲבַת־תִּשְׁעִיםat ninetyשָׁנָהyearsתֵּלֵד׃bear a child

    Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

18. 18

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאַבְרָהָםAbrahamאֶל־הָאֱלֹהִיםto Godלוּif onlyיִשְׁמָעֵאלIshmaelיִחְיֶהmight liveלְפָנֶיךָ׃before you

    And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

19. 19

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֱלֹהִיםGodאֲבָלindeedשָׂרָהSarahאִשְׁתְּךָyour wifeיֹלֶדֶתshall bearלְךָto youבֵּןa sonוְקָרָאתָand you shall callאֶת־שְׁמוֹhis nameיִצְחָקIsaacוַהֲקִמֹתִיand I will establishאֶת־בְּרִיתִיmy covenantאִתּוֹwith himלִבְרִיתas a covenant ofעוֹלָםeverlastingלְזַרְעוֹfor his seedאַחֲרָיו׃after him

    And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

20. 20

    וּלְיִשְׁמָעֵאלand as for IshmaelשְׁמַעְתִּיךָI have heard youהִנֵּהbeholdבֵּרַכְתִּיI will blessאֹתוֹhimוְהִפְרֵיתִיand I will make fruitfulאֹתוֹhimוְהִרְבֵּיתִיand I will multiplyאֹתוֹhimבִּמְאֹדveryמְאֹדgreatlyשְׁנֵים־עָשָׂרtwelveנְשִׂיאִםleadersיוֹלִידhe shall fatherוּנְתַתִּיוand I will make himלְגוֹיinto a nationגָּדוֹל׃great

    And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

21. 21

    וְאֶת־בְּרִיתִיbut my covenantאָקִיםI will establishאֶת־יִצְחָקwith Isaacאֲשֶׁרwhomתֵּלֵדshall bearלְךָto youשָׂרָהSarahלַמּוֹעֵדat the appointed timeהַזֶּהthisבַּשָּׁנָהin the yearהָאַחֶרֶת׃the next

    But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

22. 22

    וַיְכַלand He finishedלְדַבֵּרspeakingאִתּוֹwith himוַיַּעַלand went upאֱלֹהִיםGodמֵעַלfrom aboveאַבְרָהָם׃Abraham

    And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

23. 23

    וַיִּקַּחand tookאַבְרָהָםAbrahamאֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵאלIshmaelבְּנוֹhis sonוְאֵתandכׇּל־יְלִידֵיall those born inבֵיתוֹhis houseוְאֵתandכׇּל־מִקְנַתall those bought withכַּסְפּוֹhis moneyכׇּל־זָכָרevery maleבְּאַנְשֵׁיamong the men ofבֵּיתthe house ofאַבְרָהָםAbrahamוַיָּמׇלand he circumcisedאֶת־בְּשַׂרthe flesh ofעׇרְלָתָםtheir foreskinבְּעֶצֶםon the veryהַיּוֹםdayהַזֶּהthisכַּאֲשֶׁרasדִּבֶּרhad spokenאִתּוֹwith himאֱלֹהִים׃God

    And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.

24. 24

    וְאַבְרָהָםand Abrahamבֶּן־תִּשְׁעִיםwas ninetyוָתֵשַׁעand nineשָׁנָהyears oldבְּהִמֹּלוֹwhen he was circumcisedבְּשַׂרthe flesh ofעׇרְלָתוֹ׃his foreskin

    And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

25. 25

    וְיִשְׁמָעֵאלand Ishmaelבְּנוֹhis sonבֶּן־שְׁלֹשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵהson of thirteenשָׁנָהyears oldבְּהִמֹּלוֹwhen he was circumcisedאֵת־בְּשַׂרthe flesh ofעׇרְלָתוֹ׃his foreskin

    And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

26. 26

    בְּעֶצֶםon the veryהַיּוֹםdayהַזֶּהthisנִמּוֹלwas circumcisedאַבְרָהָםAbrahamוְיִשְׁמָעֵאלand Ishmaelבְּנוֹ׃his son

    In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.

27. 27

    וְכׇל־אַנְשֵׁיand all the men ofבֵיתוֹhis householdיְלִידborn inבָּיִתthe houseוּמִקְנַת־כֶּסֶףor bought with moneyמֵאֵתfromבֶּן־נֵכָרa foreignerנִמֹּלוּwere circumcisedאִתּוֹ׃with him

    And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.
