   Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.

   And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.

   וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowנִכְרׇת־בְּרִיתnikh/ROT-be/RITlet us make a covenantלֵאלֹהֵינוּle/lo/HE/nuwith our Godלְהוֹצִיאle/ho/TSIto put awayכׇל־נָשִׁיםkhol-na/SHIMall the wivesוְהַנּוֹלָדve/han/no/LADand those bornמֵהֶםme/HEMof themבַּעֲצַתba/a/TSATaccording to the counsel ofאֲדֹנָיa/do/NAYthe Lordוְהַחֲרֵדִיםve/ha/cha/re/DIMand of those who trembleבְּמִצְוַתbe/mits/VATat the commandment ofאֱלֹהֵינוּe/lo/HE/nuour Godוְכַתּוֹרָהve/khat/to/RAand according to the lawיֵעָשֶׂה׃ye/a/SElet it be done

   Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

   קוּםkumariseכִּי־עָלֶיךָki-a/LE/khafor on you isהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe matterוַאֲנַחְנוּva/a/NACH/nuand we areעִמָּךְim/MAKHwith youחֲזַקcha/ZAKbe strongוַעֲשֵׂה׃va/a/SEand do

   Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.

   וַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand he aroseעֶזְרָאEz/RAEzraוַיַּשְׁבַּעvay/yash/BAand made swearאֶת־שָׂרֵיet-sa/REthe chiefs ofהַכֹּהֲנִיםhak/ko/ha/NIMthe priestsהַלְוִיִּםHal/viy/YIMthe Levitesוְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/KHOL-yis/ra/ELand all Israelלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doכַּדָּבָרkad/da/VARaccording to the wordהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַיִּשָּׁבֵעוּ׃vay/yish/sha/VE/uand they swore

   Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware.

   Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away.

   וַיַּעֲבִירוּvay/ya/a/VI/ruand they madeקוֹלkola proclamationבִּיהוּדָהbI/hu/DAthroughout Judahוִירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםVi/ru/sha/LA/yimand Jerusalemלְכֹלle/KHOLto allבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofהַגּוֹלָהhag/go/LAthe exileלְהִקָּבֵץle/hik/ka/VETSthat they should gatherיְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִם׃Ye/ru/sha/LA/yimat Jerusalem

   And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;

   וְכֹלve/KHOLand allאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoלֹא־יָבוֹאlo-ya/VOwould not comeלִשְׁלֹשֶׁתlish/LO/shetwithin threeהַיָּמִיםhay/ya/MIMdaysכַּעֲצַתka/a/TSATaccording to the counsel ofהַשָּׂרִיםhas/sa/RIMthe princesוְהַזְּקֵנִיםve/haz/ze/ke/NIMand the eldersיׇחֳרַםyo/cho/RAMshould be forfeitedכׇּל־רְכוּשׁוֹkol-re/khu/SHOall his substanceוְהוּאve/HUand himselfיִבָּדֵלyib/ba/DELseparatedמִקְּהַלmik/ke/HALfrom the assembly ofהַגּוֹלָה׃hag/go/LAthe exiles

   And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

   וַיִּקָּבְצוּvay/yik/ka/ve/TSUthen gatheredכׇל־אַנְשֵׁי־יְהוּדָהkhol-An/SHE-ye/hu/DAall the men of Judahוּבִנְיָמִןu/Vin/ya/MINand Benjaminיְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםYe/ru/sha/LA/yimat Jerusalemלִשְׁלֹשֶׁתlish/LO/shetwithin threeהַיָּמִיםhay/ya/MIMdaysהוּאhuit wasחֹדֶשׁCHO/deshthe monthהַתְּשִׁיעִיhat/te/shi/Ininthבְּעֶשְׂרִיםbe/es/RIMon the twentiethבַּחֹדֶשׁba/CHO/deshof the monthוַיֵּשְׁבוּvay/yesh/VUand satכׇל־הָעָםkhol-ha/AMall the peopleבִּרְחוֹבbir/CHOVin the square ofבֵּיתbetthe house ofהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodמַרְעִידִיםmar/i/DIMtremblingעַל־הַדָּבָרal-had/da/VARbecause of the matterוּמֵהַגְּשָׁמִים׃u/me/hag/ge/sha/MIMand because of the rains

   Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.

    וַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand he aroseעֶזְרָאEz/RAEzraהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵהֶםa/le/HEMto themאַתֶּםat/TEMyouמְעַלְתֶּםme/al/TEMhave trespassedוַתֹּשִׁיבוּvat/to/SHI/vuand have marriedנָשִׁיםna/SHIMwivesנׇכְרִיּוֹתnokh/riy/YOTforeignלְהוֹסִיףle/ho/SIFaddingעַל־אַשְׁמַתal-ash/MATto the guilt ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Yis/ra/ELIsrael

    And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.

11. 11

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowתְּנוּte/NUmakeתוֹדָהto/DAconfessionלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDאֱלֹהֵי־אֲבֹתֵיכֶםe/lo/HE-a/vo/te/KHEMthe God of your fathersוַעֲשׂוּva/a/SUand doרְצוֹנוֹre/tso/NOHis willוְהִבָּדְלוּve/hib/ba/de/LUand separate yourselvesמֵעַמֵּיme/am/MEfrom the peoples ofהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landוּמִן־הַנָּשִׁיםu/MIN-han/na/SHIMand from the wivesהַנׇּכְרִיּוֹת׃han/nokh/riy/YOTthe foreign

    Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.

12. 12

    וַיַּעֲנוּvay/ya/a/NUand they answeredכׇל־הַקָּהָלkhol-hak/ka/HALall the assemblyוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidקוֹלkolwith a voiceגָּדוֹלga/DOLloudכֵּןkenso(כדבריך)khadavarayakh[כִּדְבָרְךָ]kid/va/re/KHAaccording to your wordעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuupon usלַעֲשׂוֹת׃la/a/SOTto do

    Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.

13. 13

    אֲבָלa/VALbutהָעָםha/AMthe peopleרָבravare manyוְהָעֵתve/ha/ETand it is a time ofגְּשָׁמִיםge/sha/MIMrainוְאֵיןve/ENand there is noכֹּחַKO/achstrengthלַעֲמוֹדla/a/MODto standבַּחוּץba/CHUTSoutsideוְהַמְּלָאכָהve/ham/me/la/KHAand the workלֹא־לְיוֹםlo-le/YOMis not of a dayאֶחָדe/CHADoneוְלֹאve/LOand notלִשְׁנַיִםlish/NA/yimof twoכִּי־הִרְבִּינוּki-hir/BI/nufor we have greatlyלִפְשֹׁעַlif/SHO/atransgressedבַּדָּבָרbad/da/VARin the matterהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.

    יַעַמְדוּ־נָאya/am/DU-nalet stand nowשָׂרֵינוּsa/RE/nuour princesלְכׇל־הַקָּהָלle/KHOL-hak/ka/HALfor all the assemblyוְכֹלve/KHOLand let allאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho areבֶּעָרֵינוּbe/a/RE/nuin our citiesהַהֹשִׁיבha/ho/SHIVwho have marriedנָשִׁיםna/SHIMwivesנׇכְרִיּוֹתnokh/riy/YOTforeignיָבֹאya/VOcomeלְעִתִּיםle/it/TIMat timesמְזֻמָּנִיםme/zum/ma/NIMappointedוְעִמָּהֶםve/im/ma/HEMand with themזִקְנֵי־עִירzik/NE-irthe elders of every cityוָעִירva/IRand cityוְשֹׁפְטֶיהָve/shof/TE/haand its judgesעַדaduntilלְהָשִׁיבle/ha/SHIVis turned awayחֲרוֹןcha/RONthe fierceness ofאַף־אֱלֹהֵינוּaf-e/lo/HE/nuthe anger of our Godמִמֶּנּוּmim/MEN/nufrom usעַדaduntilלַדָּבָרlad/da/VARthe matterהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.

15. 15

    אַךְakhbutיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanבֶּן־עֲשָׂהאֵלben-A/sah/ELthe son of Asahelוְיַחְזְיָהve/Yach/ze/YAand Jahzeiahבֶן־תִּקְוָהven-Tik/VAthe son of Tikvahעָמְדוּa/me/DUopposedעַל־זֹאתal-zotthisוּמְשֻׁלָּםu/Me/shul/LAMand Meshullamוְשַׁבְּתַיve/Shab/be/TAYand Shabbethaiהַלֵּוִיhal/Le/VIthe Leviteעֲזָרֻם׃a/za/RUMsupported them

    Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.

    וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־כֵןvay/ya/a/SU-khenand so didבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofהַגּוֹלָהhag/go/LAthe exileוַיִּבָּדְלוּvay/yib/ba/de/LUand were selectedעֶזְרָאEz/RAEzraהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenרָאשֵׁיra/SHEthe heads ofהָאָבוֹתha/a/VOTthe fathersלְבֵיתle/VETby the house ofאֲבֹתָםa/vo/TAMtheir fathersוְכֻלָּםve/khul/LAMand all of themבְּשֵׁמוֹתbe/she/MOTby nameוַיֵּשְׁבוּvay/yesh/VUand they sat downבְּיוֹםbe/YOMon dayאֶחָדe/CHADoneלַחֹדֶשׁla/CHO/deshof the monthהָעֲשִׂירִיha/a/si/RIthe tenthלְדַרְיוֹשׁle/dar/YOSHto examineהַדָּבָר׃had/da/VARthe matter

    And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

    וַיְכַלּוּvay/khal/LUand they finishedבַכֹּלvak/KOLwith allאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenהַהֹשִׁיבוּha/ho/SHI/vuwho had marriedנָשִׁיםna/SHIMwivesנׇכְרִיּוֹתnokh/riy/YOTforeignעַדadbyיוֹםyomdayאֶחָדe/CHADoneלַחֹדֶשׁla/CHO/deshof the monthהָרִאשׁוֹן׃ha/ri/SHONthe first

    And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.

18. 18

    וַיִּמָּצֵאvay/yim/ma/TSEand there were foundמִבְּנֵיmib/be/NEof the sons ofהַכֹּהֲנִיםhak/ko/ha/NIMthe priestsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהֹשִׁיבוּho/SHI/vuthey had marriedנָשִׁיםna/SHIMwivesנׇכְרִיּוֹתnokh/riy/YOTforeignמִבְּנֵיmib/be/NEof the sons ofיֵשׁוּעַYe/SHU/aJeshuaבֶּן־יוֹצָדָקben-Yo/tsa/DAKthe son of Jozadakוְאֶחָיוve/e/CHAYVand his brothersמַעֲשֵׂיָהMa/a/se/YAMaaseiahוֶאֱלִיעֶזֶרVe/e/li/E/zerand Eliezerוְיָרִיבve/Ya/RIVand Jaribוּגְדַלְיָה׃u/Ge/dal/YAand Gedaliah

    And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

19. 19

    וַיִּתְּנוּvay/yit/te/NUand they gaveיָדָםya/DAMtheir handלְהוֹצִיאle/ho/TSIto put awayנְשֵׁיהֶםne/she/HEMtheir wivesוַאֲשֵׁמִיםva/a/she/MIMand being guiltyאֵיל־צֹאןel-tsona ram of the flockעַל־אַשְׁמָתָם׃al-ash/ma/TAMfor their guilt

    And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass.

20. 20

    וּמִבְּנֵיu/mib/be/NEand of the sons ofאִמֵּרIm/MERImmerחֲנָנִיCha/NA/niHananiוּזְבַדְיָה׃u/Ze/vad/YAand Zebadiah

    And of the sons of Immer; Hanani, and Zebadiah.

21. 21

    וּמִבְּנֵיu/mib/be/NEand of the sons ofחָרִםCha/RIMHarimמַעֲשֵׂיָהMa/a/se/YAMaaseiahוְאֵלִיָּהve/E/liy/YAand Elijahוּשְׁמַעְיָהu/She/ma/YAand ShemaiahוִיחִיאֵלVi/chi/ELand Jehielוְעֻזִּיָּה׃ve/Uz/ziy/YAand Uzziah

    And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

    וּמִבְּנֵיu/mib/be/NEand of the sons ofפַּשְׁחוּרPash/CHURPashurאֶלְיוֹעֵינַיEl/yo/e/NAYElioenaiמַעֲשֵׂיָהMa/a/se/YAMaaseiahיִשְׁמָעֵאלYish/ma/ELIshmaelנְתַנְאֵלNe/tan/ELNethaneelיוֹזָבָדYo/za/VADJozabadוְאֶלְעָשָׂה׃ve/El/a/SAand Eleasah

    And of the sons of Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

23. 23

    וּמִן־הַלְוִיִּםu/MIN-hal/viy/YIMand from the LevitesיוֹזָבָדYo/za/VADJozabadוְשִׁמְעִיve/Shim/Iand Shimeiוְקֵלָיָהve/Ke/la/YAand Kelaiahהוּאhuthat isקְלִיטָאKe/li/TAKelitaפְּתַחְיָהPe/tach/YAPethahiahיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוֶאֱלִיעֶזֶר׃Ve/e/li/E/zerand Eliezer

    Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,) Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

    וּמִן־הַמְשֹׁרְרִיםu/MIN-ham/shor/RIMand from the singersאֶלְיָשִׁיבEl/ya/SHIVEliashibוּמִן־הַשֹּׁעֲרִיםu/MIN-hash/sho/a/RIMand from the gatekeepersשַׁלֻּםShal/LUMShallumוָטֶלֶםva/TE/lemand Telemוְאוּרִי׃ve/U/RIand Uri

    Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the porters; Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.

    Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; Ramiah, and Jeziah, and Malchiah, and Miamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

    And of the sons of Elam; Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliah.

    וּמִבְּנֵיu/mib/be/NEand of the sons ofזַתּוּאZat/TUZattuאֶלְיוֹעֵנַיEl/yo/e/NAYElioenaiאֶלְיָשִׁיבEl/ya/SHIVEliashibמַתַּנְיָהMat/tan/YAMattaniahוִירֵמוֹתVi/re/MOTand Jeremothוְזָבָדve/Za/VADand Zabadוַעֲזִיזָא׃va/A/zi/ZAand Aziza

    And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

    Of the sons also of Bebai; Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai.

    And of the sons of Bani; Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.

    All these had taken strange wives: and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
