   The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

   וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameחֲנָנִיCha/NA/niHananiאֶחָדe/CHADoneמֵאַחַיme/a/CHAYof my brothersהוּאhuheוַאֲנָשִׁיםva/a/na/SHIMand certain menמִיהוּדָהmI/hu/DAof Judahוָאֶשְׁאָלֵםva/esh/a/LEMand I asked themעַל־הַיְּהוּדִיםal-Hay/ye/hu/DIMconcerning the Jewsהַפְּלֵיטָהhap/pe/le/TAwho had escapedאֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁאֲרוּa/SHER-nish/a/RUwho were leftמִן־הַשֶּׁבִיmin-hash/SHE/viof the captivityוְעַל־יְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִם׃ve/AL-ye/ru/sha/LA/yimand concerning Jerusalem

   That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidלִיlito meהַנִּשְׁאָרִיםhan/nish/a/RIMthe remnantאֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁאֲרוּa/SHER-nish/a/RUwho are leftמִן־הַשְּׁבִיmin-hash/she/VIof the captivityשָׁםshamthereבַּמְּדִינָהbam/me/di/NAin the provinceבְּרָעָהbe/ra/Aare in afflictionגְדֹלָהge/do/LAgreatוּבְחֶרְפָּהu/ve/cher/PAand reproachוְחוֹמַתve/cho/MATand the wall ofיְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםYe/ru/sha/LA/yimJerusalemמְפֹרָצֶתme/fo/RA/tsetis broken downוּשְׁעָרֶיהָu/she/a/RE/haand its gatesנִצְּתוּnits/tse/TUare burnedבָאֵשׁ׃va/ESHwith fire

   And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

   And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

   וָאֹמַרva/o/MARand I saidאָנָּאan/NAI beseech YouיְהֹוָהAdonaiO LORDאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofהַשָּׁמַיִםhash/sha/MA/yimthe heavensהָאֵלha/ELGodהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLgreatוְהַנּוֹרָאve/han/no/RAand awesomeשֹׁמֵרsho/MERwho keepsהַבְּרִיתhab/be/RITthe covenantוָחֶסֶדva/CHE/sedand kindnessלְאֹהֲבָיוle/o/ha/VAYVfor those who love Himוּלְשֹׁמְרֵיu/le/shom/REand keepמִצְוֺתָיו׃mits/vo/TAYVHis commandments

   And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:

   תְּהִיte/HIlet beנָאnaI prayאׇזְנְךָ־קַשֶּׁבֶתoz/ne/KHA-kash/SHE/vetYour ear attentiveוְעֵינֶיךָve/e/NE/khaand Your eyesפְתוּחוֹתfe/tu/CHOTopenלִשְׁמֹעַlish/MO/ato hearאֶל־תְּפִלַּתel-te/fil/LATthe prayer ofעַבְדְּךָav/de/KHAYour servantאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIIמִתְפַּלֵּלmit/pal/LELam prayingלְפָנֶיךָle/fa/NE/khabefore Youהַיּוֹםhay/YOMnowיוֹמָםyo/MAMby dayוָלַיְלָהva/LAY/laand nightעַל־בְּנֵיal-be/NEfor the children ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelעֲבָדֶיךָa/va/DE/khaYour servantsוּמִתְוַדֶּהu/mit/vad/DEand confessעַל־חַטֹּאותal-chat/TOTfor the sins ofבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלbe/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichחָטָאנוּcha/TA/nuwe have sinnedלָךְlakhagainst Youוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iוּבֵית־אָבִיu/VET-a/VIand my father's houseחָטָאנוּ׃cha/TA/nuwe have sinned

   Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.

   חֲבֹלcha/VOLact corruptlyחָבַלְנוּcha/VAL/nuwe have acted corruptlyלָךְlakhagainst Youוְלֹא־שָׁמַרְנוּve/LO-sha/MAR/nuand have not keptאֶת־הַמִּצְוֺתet-ham/mits/VOTthe commandmentsוְאֶת־הַחֻקִּיםve/ET-ha/chuk/KIMand the statutesוְאֶת־הַמִּשְׁפָּטִיםve/ET-ham/mish/pa/TIMand the judgmentsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichצִוִּיתָtsiv/VI/taYou commandedאֶת־מֹשֶׁהet-Mo/SHEMosesעַבְדֶּךָ׃av/DE/khaYour servant

   We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.

   זְכׇר־נָאze/KHOR-naremember I prayאֶת־הַדָּבָרet-had/da/VARthe wordאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichצִוִּיתָtsiv/VI/taYou commandedאֶת־מֹשֶׁהet-Mo/SHEMosesעַבְדְּךָav/de/KHAYour servantלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאַתֶּםat/TEMif youתִּמְעָלוּtim/A/lutransgressאֲנִיa/NIIאָפִיץa/FITSwill scatterאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouבָּעַמִּים׃ba/am/MIMamong the peoples

   Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:

9. 9

   וְשַׁבְתֶּםve/shav/TEMbut if you returnאֵלַיe/LAYto Meוּשְׁמַרְתֶּםu/she/mar/TEMand you shall keepמִצְוֺתַיmits/vo/TAYMy commandmentsוַעֲשִׂיתֶםva/a/si/TEMand doאֹתָםo/TAMthemאִם־יִהְיֶהim-yih/YEthough there wereנִדַּחֲכֶםnid/da/cha/KHEMyour outcastsבִּקְצֵהbik/TSEat the end ofהַשָּׁמַיִםhash/sha/MA/yimthe heavensמִשָּׁםmish/SHAMfrom thereאֲקַבְּצֵםa/kab/be/TSEMwill I gather them(והבואתים)vahavavtayam[וַהֲבִיאוֹתִים]va/ha/vi/o/TIMand I will bring themאֶל־הַמָּקוֹםel-ham/ma/KOMto the placeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatבָּחַרְתִּיba/CHAR/tiI have chosenלְשַׁכֵּןle/shak/KENto make dwellאֶת־שְׁמִיet-she/MIMy nameשָׁם׃shamthere

   But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

    וְהֵםve/HEMnow these areעֲבָדֶיךָa/va/DE/khaYour servantsוְעַמֶּךָve/am/ME/khaand Your peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomפָּדִיתָpa/DI/taYou have redeemedבְּכֹחֲךָbe/kho/cha/KHAby Your powerהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLgreatוּבְיָדְךָu/ve/ya/de/KHAand by Your handהַחֲזָקָה׃ha/cha/za/KAstrong

    Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.

    אָנָּאan/NAI beseech Youאֲדֹנָיa/do/NAYO Lordתְּהִיte/HIlet beנָאnaI prayאׇזְנְךָ־קַשֶּׁבֶתoz/ne/KHA-kash/SHE/vetYour ear attentiveאֶל־תְּפִלַּתel-te/fil/LATto the prayer ofעַבְדְּךָav/de/KHAYour servantוְאֶל־תְּפִלַּתve/EL-te/fil/LATand to the prayer ofעֲבָדֶיךָa/va/DE/khaYour servantsהַחֲפֵצִיםha/cha/fe/TSIMwho delightלְיִרְאָהle/yir/Ato fearאֶת־שְׁמֶךָet-she/ME/khaYour nameוְהַצְלִיחָה־נָּאve/hats/li/CHA-naand prosper I prayלְעַבְדְּךָle/av/de/KHAYour servantהַיּוֹםhay/YOMtodayוּתְנֵהוּu/te/NE/huand grant himלְרַחֲמִיםle/ra/cha/MIMmercyלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iהָיִיתִיha/YI/tiwasמַשְׁקֶהmash/KEcupbearerלַמֶּלֶךְ׃lam/ME/lekhto the king

    O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.
