   וַיְהִיand it came to passדְבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDאֵלַיto meלֵאמֹר׃saying

   The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying,

   מַה־לָּכֶםwhat mean youאַתֶּםyouמֹשְׁלִיםuse as a proverbאֶת־הַמָּשָׁלthe proverbהַזֶּהthisעַל־אַדְמַתupon the land ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלֵאמֹרsayingאָבוֹתthe fathersיֹאכְלוּshall eatבֹסֶרsour grapesוְשִׁנֵּיand the teeth ofהַבָּנִיםthe sonsתִּקְהֶינָה׃are set on edge

   What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?

   חַי־אָנִיas I liveנְאֻםsaysאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODאִם־יִהְיֶהthough beלָכֶםto youעוֹדany moreמְשֹׁלto use as a proverbהַמָּשָׁלthe proverbהַזֶּהthisבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

   As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

4. 4

   הֵןbeholdכׇּל־הַנְּפָשׁוֹתall the soulsלִיto meהֵנָּהthey areכְּנֶפֶשׁlike the life ofהָאָבthe fatherוּכְנֶפֶשׁand as the life ofהַבֵּןthe sonלִי־הֵנָּהto me they areהַנֶּפֶשׁthe soulהַחֹטֵאתthe one which sinsהִיאit isתָמוּת׃it shall die

   Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

   וְאִישׁand a manכִּי־יִהְיֶהif he shall beצַדִּיקrighteousוְעָשָׂהand shall doמִשְׁפָּטjudgmentוּצְדָקָה׃and righteousness

   But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,

   אֶל־הֶהָרִיםto the mountainsלֹאnotאָכׇלhe has eatenוְעֵינָיוand his eyesלֹאnotנָשָׂאboreאֶל־גִּלּוּלֵיto the idols ofבֵּיתthe house ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְאֶת־אֵשֶׁתand the wife ofרֵעֵהוּhis neighborלֹאnotטִמֵּאhe had defiledוְאֶל־אִשָּׁהand to a womanנִדָּהmenstruousלֹאnotיִקְרָב׃he will draw near

   And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,

   וְאִישׁand a manלֹאnotיוֹנֶהhe oppressedחֲבֹלָתוֹhis pledgeחוֹבthe debtorיָשִׁיבhe shall returnגְּזֵלָהrobberyלֹאnotיִגְזֹלhe would depriveלַחְמוֹhis breadלְרָעֵבto the hungryיִתֵּןshall giveוְעֵירֹםand the nakedיְכַסֶּה־בָּגֶד׃he covers with a garment

   And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

   בַּנֶּשֶׁךְfor the interestלֹא־יִתֵּןshall not permitוְתַרְבִּיתand profitלֹאnotיִקָּחhe will takeמֵעָוֶלfrom iniquityיָשִׁיבhe shall returnיָדוֹhis handמִשְׁפַּטjudgmentאֱמֶתtruthיַעֲשֶׂהhe shall doבֵּיןbetweenאִישׁa manלְאִישׁ׃for a man

   He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,

   בְּחֻקּוֹתַיin my statutesיְהַלֵּךְhe walksוּמִשְׁפָּטַיand my judgmentsשָׁמַרkeptלַעֲשׂוֹתto doאֱמֶתtruthצַדִּיקrighteousהוּאheחָיֹהsurelyיִחְיֶהhe shall liveנְאֻםsaysאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִה׃GOD

   Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

10. 10

    וְהוֹלִידand he has begottenבֵּן־פָּרִיץa son that is a robberשֹׁפֵךְthe one who shedsדָּםbloodוְעָשָׂהand shall doאָחa brotherמֵאַחַדany one ofמֵאֵלֶּה׃than these

    If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,

    וְהוּאand heאֶת־כׇּל־אֵלֶּהall theseלֹאnotעָשָׂהhe didכִּיbecauseגַםalsoאֶל־הֶהָרִיםto the mountainsאָכַלateוְאֶת־אֵשֶׁתand the wife ofרֵעֵהוּhis neighborטִמֵּא׃he had defiled

    And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife,

12. 12

    עָנִיpoorוְאֶבְיוֹןand needyהוֹנָהhe has oppressedגְּזֵלוֹתrobberiesגָּזָלhe robbedחֲבֹלa pledgeלֹאnotיָשִׁיבhe shall returnוְאֶל־הַגִּלּוּלִיםand the idolsנָשָׂאboreעֵינָיוhis eyesתּוֹעֵבָהabominationעָשָׂה׃he did

    Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

13. 13

    בַּנֶּשֶׁךְfor the interestנָתַןgaveוְתַרְבִּיתand profitלָקַחtookוָחָיand liveלֹאnotיִחְיֶהhe shall liveאֵת־כׇּל־הַתּוֹעֵבוֹתall the abominationsהָאֵלֶּהtheseעָשָׂהhe didמוֹתsurelyיוּמָתhe shall be put to deathדָּמָיוhis bloodבּוֹin itיִהְיֶה׃shall be

    Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

14. 14

    וְהִנֵּהand beholdהוֹלִידhe has begottenבֵּןa sonוַיַּרְאand sawאֶת־כׇּל־חַטֹּאתall the sins ofאָבִיוhis fatherאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהhe didוַיִּרְאֶהand he sawוְלֹאand notיַעֲשֶׂהhe shall doכָּהֵן׃like them

    Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,

15. 15

    עַל־הֶהָרִיםupon the mountainsלֹאnotאָכׇלhe has eatenוְעֵינָיוand his eyesלֹאnotנָשָׂאboreאֶל־גִּלּוּלֵיto the idols ofבֵּיתthe house ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֶת־אֵשֶׁתthe wife ofרֵעֵהוּhis neighborלֹאnotטִמֵּא׃he had defiled

    That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour's wife,

16. 16

    וְאִישׁand a manלֹאnotהוֹנָהhe has oppressedחֲבֹלa pledgeלֹאnotחָבָלhe has taken as pledgeוּגְזֵלָהand robberyלֹאnotגָזָלhe has robbedלַחְמוֹhis breadלְרָעֵבto the hungryנָתָןhe gaveוְעֵרוֹםand the nakedכִּסָּה־בָגֶד׃he has covered with a garment

    Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,

17. 17

    מֵעָנִיfrom the poorהֵשִׁיבhe restoredיָדוֹhis handנֶשֶׁךְinterestוְתַרְבִּיתand profitלֹאnotלָקָחhe tookמִשְׁפָּטַיmy judgmentsעָשָׂהhe didבְּחֻקּוֹתַיin my statutesהָלָךְhe wentהוּאheלֹאnotיָמוּתhe shall dieבַּעֲוֺןin the iniquity ofאָבִיוhis fatherחָיֹהsurelyיִחְיֶה׃he shall live

    That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

18. 18

    אָבִיוhis fatherכִּי־עָשַׁקbecause he has oppressedעֹשֶׁקoppressionגָּזַלhe robbedגֵּזֶלrobbery ofאָחa brotherוַאֲשֶׁרand whichלֹא־טוֹבnot goodעָשָׂהhe didבְּתוֹךְamongעַמָּיוhis peopleוְהִנֵּה־מֵתand behold is deadבַּעֲוֺנוֹ׃in his iniquity

    As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

19. 19

    וַאֲמַרְתֶּםand you shall sayמַדֻּעַwhyלֹא־נָשָׂאnot boreהַבֵּןthe sonבַּעֲוֺןin the iniquity ofהָאָבthe fatherוְהַבֵּןand the sonמִשְׁפָּטjudgmentוּצְדָקָהand righteousnessעָשָׂהhe didאֵת־כׇּל־חֻקּוֹתַיall my statutesשָׁמַרkeptוַיַּעֲשֶׂהand he didאֹתָםthemחָיֹהsurelyיִחְיֶה׃he shall live

    Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

20. 20

    הַנֶּפֶשׁthe soulהַחֹטֵאתthe one which sinsהִיאit isתָמוּתit shall dieבֵּןa sonלֹא־יִשָּׂאshall not lift upבַּעֲוֺןin the iniquity ofהָאָבthe fatherוְאָבand a fatherלֹאnotיִשָּׂאhe shall bearבַּעֲוֺןin the iniquity ofהַבֵּןthe sonצִדְקַתrighteousness ofהַצַּדִּיקthe righteousעָלָיוupon himתִּהְיֶהshall beוְרִשְׁעַתand the wickedness of(רשע)[הָרָשָׁע]the wicked personעָלָיוupon himתִּהְיֶה׃shall be

    The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21. 21

    וְהָרָשָׁעand the wicked personכִּיthatיָשׁוּבhe shall returnמִכׇּל־חַטֹּאתָוfrom all his sinאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהhe didוְשָׁמַרand keptאֶת־כׇּל־חֻקּוֹתַיall my statutesוְעָשָׂהand shall doמִשְׁפָּטjudgmentוּצְדָקָהand righteousnessחָיֹהsurelyיִחְיֶהhe shall liveלֹאnotיָמוּת׃he shall die

    But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

22. 22

    כׇּל־פְּשָׁעָיוall his transgressionsאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהhe didלֹאnotיִזָּכְרוּrememberedלוֹto himבְּצִדְקָתוֹfor his righteousnessאֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂהwhich didיִחְיֶה׃he shall live

    All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

23. 23

    הֶחָפֹץreallyאֶחְפֹּץI have pleasureמוֹתthe death ofרָשָׁעwickedנְאֻםsaysאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODהֲלוֹאis it notבְּשׁוּבוֹwhen he turn backמִדְּרָכָיוfrom his waysוְחָיָה׃and he will live

    Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24. 24

    וּבְשׁוּבand when turns awayצַדִּיקrighteousמִצִּדְקָתוֹfrom his righteousnessוְעָשָׂהand shall doעָוֶלiniquityכְּכֹלaccording to allהַתּוֹעֵבוֹתthe abominationsאֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂהwhich didהָרָשָׁעthe wickedיַעֲשֶׂהhe shall doוָחָיand liveכׇּל־צִדְקֹתָוall his righteousnessאֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂהwhich didלֹאnotתִזָּכַרְנָהthey will be rememberedבְּמַעֲלוֹin his unfaithfulnessאֲשֶׁר־מָעַלwhich unfaithfulnessוּבְחַטָּאתוֹand in his sinאֲשֶׁר־חָטָאwhich he has committedבָּםin themיָמוּת׃he shall die

    But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

25. 25

    וַאֲמַרְתֶּםand you shall sayלֹאnotיִתָּכֵןis fairדֶּרֶךְthe way ofאֲדֹנָיLordשִׁמְעוּ־נָאhear you nowבֵּיתthe house ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהֲדַרְכִּיis it my wayלֹאnotיִתָּכֵןis fairהֲלֹאis it notדַרְכֵיכֶםyour waysלֹאnotיִתָּכֵנוּ׃are fair

    Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

26. 26

    בְּשׁוּב־צַדִּיקwhen righteousמִצִּדְקָתוֹfrom his righteousnessוְעָשָׂהand shall doעָוֶלiniquityוּמֵתand he will dieעֲלֵיהֶםupon themבְּעַוְלוֹfor his iniquityאֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂהwhich didיָמוּת׃he shall die

    When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

27. 27

    וּבְשׁוּבand when turns awayרָשָׁעwickedמֵרִשְׁעָתוֹfrom his wickednessאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהhe didוַיַּעַשׂand he madeמִשְׁפָּטjudgmentוּצְדָקָהand righteousnessהוּאheאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹhis lifeיְחַיֶּה׃he shall save alive

    Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

28. 28

    וַיִּרְאֶהand he saw(וישוב)[וַיָּשׇׁב]and he will turnמִכׇּל־פְּשָׁעָיוfrom all his transgressionsאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהhe didחָיוֹsurelyיִחְיֶהhe shall liveלֹאnotיָמוּת׃he shall die

    Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

29. 29

    וְאָמְרוּshall sayבֵּיתthe house ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלֹאnotיִתָּכֵןis fairדֶּרֶךְthe way ofאֲדֹנָיLordהַדְּרָכַיare my waysלֹאnotיִתָּכְנוּare fairבֵּיתthe house ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהֲלֹאis it notדַרְכֵיכֶםyour waysלֹאnotיִתָּכֵן׃is fair

    Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

30. 30

    לָכֵןthereforeאִישׁa manכִּדְרָכָיוaccording to his waysאֶשְׁפֹּטI will judgeאֶתְכֶםyouבֵּיתthe house ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelנְאֻםsaysאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODשׁוּבוּreturnוְהָשִׁיבוּand returnמִכׇּל־פִּשְׁעֵיכֶםfrom all your transgressionsוְלֹא־יִהְיֶהand shall have no moreלָכֶםto youלְמִכְשׁוֹלa stumbling blockעָוֺן׃iniquity

    Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

31. 31

    הַשְׁלִיכוּthrowמֵעֲלֵיכֶםfrom upon youאֶת־כׇּל־פִּשְׁעֵיכֶםall your transgressionsאֲשֶׁרwhichפְּשַׁעְתֶּםyou have rebelledבָּםin themוַעֲשׂוּand makeלָכֶםto youלֵבheartחָדָשׁnewוְרוּחַand spirit ofחֲדָשָׁהnewוְלָמָּהand whyתָמֻתוּyou will dieבֵּיתthe house ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32. 32

    כִּיforלֹאnotאֶחְפֹּץI have pleasureבְּמוֹתin the death ofהַמֵּתthe deadנְאֻםsaysאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODוְהָשִׁיבוּand returnוִחְיוּ׃and live

    For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
