   וַיְהִיand it came to passדְבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDאֵלַיto meלֵאמֹר׃saying

   And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

   בֶּן־אָדָםson of manחוּדask a riddleחִידָהa riddleוּמְשֹׁלand speak a parableמָשָׁלa parableאֶל־בֵּיתto the house ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

   Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;

   וְאָמַרְתָּand sayכֹּה־אָמַרthus saysאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODהַנֶּשֶׁרthe eagleהַגָּדוֹלthe greatגְּדוֹלgreat ofהַכְּנָפַיִםthe wingsאֶרֶךְlong ofהָאֵבֶרthe pinionמָלֵאfull ofהַנּוֹצָהthe plumageאֲשֶׁר־לוֹwhich he hasהָרִקְמָהthe variegated plumageבָּאcameאֶל־הַלְּבָנוֹןto Lebanonוַיִּקַּחand tookאֶת־צַמֶּרֶתthe treetop ofהָאָרֶז׃the cedar

   And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar:

   אֵת־רֹאשׁthe head ofיְנִיקוֹתָיוits shootsקָטָףit plucked offוַיְבִיאֵהוּand carried itאֶל־אֶרֶץto the land ofכְּנַעַןtradeבְּעִירin the city ofרֹכְלִיםtradersשָׂמוֹ׃he established it

   He cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants.

   וַיִּקַּחand tookמִזֶּרַעfrom the seed ofהָאָרֶץthe landוַיִּתְּנֵהוּand he delivered him upבִּשְׂדֵה־זָרַעin the field of seedקָחtake itעַל־מַיִםupon waterרַבִּיםmanyצַפְצָפָהa willowשָׂמוֹ׃he established it

   He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree.

   וַיִּצְמַחand it sproutedוַיְהִיand it came to passלְגֶפֶןa vineסֹרַחַתspreadingשִׁפְלַתlow ofקוֹמָהstatureלִפְנוֹתturned towardsדָּלִיּוֹתָיוits branchesאֵלָיוtowards himוְשׇׁרָשָׁיוand its rootsתַּחְתָּיוunder himיִהְיוּshall beוַתְּהִיand wasלְגֶפֶןa vineוַתַּעַשׂand brought forthבַּדִּיםbranchesוַתְּשַׁלַּחand it sent outפֹּרֹאות׃sprigs

   And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.

   וַיְהִיand it came to passנֶשֶׁר־אֶחָדan eagle oneגָּדוֹלgreatגְּדוֹלgreat ofכְּנָפַיִםwingsוְרַב־נוֹצָהand great plumageוְהִנֵּהand beholdהַגֶּפֶןthe vineהַזֹּאתthisכָּפְנָהit bentשׇׁרָשֶׁיהָits rootsעָלָיוtowards himוְדָלִיּוֹתָיוand its branchesשִׁלְחָה־לּוֹsent out towards himלְהַשְׁקוֹתto waterאוֹתָהּitמֵעֲרֻגוֹתfrom the beds ofמַטָּעָהּ׃its planting

   There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation.

   אֶל־שָׂדֶהto fieldטּוֹבis goodאֶל־מַיִםto waterרַבִּיםmanyהִיאit isשְׁתוּלָהwas plantedלַעֲשׂוֹתto doעָנָףa branchוְלָשֵׂאתand to bearפְּרִיfruitלִהְיוֹתto beלְגֶפֶןa vineאַדָּרֶת׃goodly

   It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.

   אֱמֹרsayכֹּהthusאָמַרsaidאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODתִּצְלָחwill it prosperהֲלוֹאis it notאֶת־שׇׁרָשֶׁיהָits rootsיְנַתֵּקbreaksוְאֶת־פִּרְיָהּand its fruitיְקוֹסֵסcut offוְיָבֵשׁand it is dryכׇּל־טַרְפֵּיall the fresh things ofצִמְחָהּits growthתִּיבָשׁit will witherוְלֹא־בִזְרֹעַand not by an armגְּדוֹלָהgreatוּבְעַם־רָבand by many peopleלְמַשְׂאוֹתto lift upאוֹתָהּitמִשׇּׁרָשֶׁיהָ׃from its roots

   Say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof.

    וְהִנֵּהand beholdשְׁתוּלָהwas plantedהֲתִצְלָחwill it prosperהֲלֹאis it notכְגַעַתwhen touchesבָּהּin itרוּחַthe wind ofהַקָּדִיםthe eastתִּיבַשׁwill it witherיָבֹשׁsurelyעַל־עֲרֻגֹתupon the beds ofצִמְחָהּits growthתִּיבָשׁ׃it will wither

    Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew.

    וַיְהִיand it came to passדְבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDאֵלַיto meלֵאמֹר׃saying

    Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

    אֱמׇר־נָאsay nowלְבֵיתto the house ofהַמֶּרִיthe rebellionהֲלֹאis it notיְדַעְתֶּםyou knowמָה־אֵלֶּהwhat theseאֱמֹרsayהִנֵּה־בָאbehold cameמֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶלking of Babylonיְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםJerusalemוַיִּקַּחand tookאֶת־מַלְכָּהּits kingוְאֶת־שָׂרֶיהָand its princesוַיָּבֵאand he broughtאוֹתָםthemאֵלָיוto himבָּבֶלָה׃into Babylon

    Say now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and hath taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon;

    וַיִּקַּחand tookמִזֶּרַעfrom the seed ofהַמְּלוּכָהthe royalוַיִּכְרֹתand madeאִתּוֹwith himבְּרִיתa covenantוַיָּבֵאand he broughtאֹתוֹhimבְּאָלָהin an oathוְאֶת־אֵילֵיand the mighty ofהָאָרֶץthe landלָקָח׃he took

    And hath taken of the king's seed, and made a covenant with him, and hath taken an oath of him: he hath also taken the mighty of the land:

14. 14

    לִהְיוֹתto beמַמְלָכָהkingdomשְׁפָלָהlowlyלְבִלְתִּיto notהִתְנַשֵּׂאlift itself upלִשְׁמֹרto keepאֶת־בְּרִיתוֹhis covenantלְעׇמְדָהּ׃that it might stand

    That the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand.

15. 15

    וַיִּמְרׇד־בּוֹand he rebelled against himלִשְׁלֹחַby sendingמַלְאָכָיוhis messengersמִצְרַיִםEgyptלָתֶת־לוֹthat they might give himסוּסִיםhorsesוְעַם־רָבand much peopleהֲיִצְלָחwill he prosperהֲיִמָּלֵטwill he escapeהָעֹשֵׂהthe one who doesאֵלֶּהtheseוְהֵפֵרand he will breakבְּרִיתthe covenantוְנִמְלָט׃and be saved

    But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?

16. 16

    חַי־אָנִיas I liveנְאֻםsaysאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODאִם־לֹאif notבִּמְקוֹםat the place ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingהַמַּמְלִיךְthe one who made kingאֹתוֹhimאֲשֶׁרwhichבָּזָהhe has despisedאֶת־אָלָתוֹhis oathוַאֲשֶׁרand whichהֵפֵרsomeone has brokenאֶת־בְּרִיתוֹhis covenantאִתּוֹwith himבְתוֹךְ־בָּבֶלin the middle of Babylonיָמוּת׃he shall die

    As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.

17. 17

    וְלֹאand notבְחַיִלwith an armyגָּדוֹלgreatוּבְקָהָלand with a companyרָבmuchיַעֲשֶׂהhe shall doאוֹתוֹhimפַרְעֹהPharaohבַּמִּלְחָמָהin the battleבִּשְׁפֹּךְin the shedding ofסֹלְלָהa moundוּבִבְנוֹתand when buildדָּיֵקa siege wallלְהַכְרִיתto cut offנְפָשׁוֹתsoulsרַבּוֹת׃many

    Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:

18. 18

    וּבָזָהand he despisedאָלָהan oathלְהָפֵרto breakבְּרִיתthe covenantוְהִנֵּהand beholdנָתַןgaveיָדוֹhis handוְכׇל־אֵלֶּהand all theseעָשָׂהhe didלֹאnotיִמָּלֵט׃shall be delivered

    Seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape.

19. 19

    לָכֵןthereforeכֹּה־אָמַרthus saysאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODחַי־אָנִיas I liveאִם־לֹאif notאָלָתִיmy oathאֲשֶׁרwhichבָּזָהhe has despisedוּבְרִיתִיand my covenantאֲשֶׁרwhichהֵפִירhe has brokenוּנְתַתִּיוand I will recompense itבְּרֹאשׁוֹ׃at its head

    Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, even it will I recompense upon his own head.

20. 20

    וּפָרַשְׂתִּיand I will spreadעָלָיוupon himרִשְׁתִּיmy netוְנִתְפַּשׂand he will be caughtבִּמְצוּדָתִיin my hunting netוַהֲבִיאוֹתִיהוּand I will bring himבָבֶלָהto Babylonוְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּיand I will enter into judgmentאִתּוֹwith himשָׁםthereמַעֲלוֹhis unfaithfulnessאֲשֶׁרwhichמָעַל־בִּי׃he has trespassed against me

    And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass that he hath trespassed against me.

21. 21

    וְאֵתandכׇּל־מִבְרָחָוall his fugitivesבְּכׇל־אֲגַפָּיוin all his troopsבַּחֶרֶבwith the swordיִפֹּלוּthey must fallוְהַנִּשְׁאָרִיםand the remainingלְכׇל־רוּחַto all the windsיִפָּרֵשׂוּthey will be scatteredוִידַעְתֶּםand you shall knowכִּיthatאֲניIיְהֹוָהthe LORDדִּבַּרְתִּי׃I have spoken

    And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and ye shall know that I the LORD have spoken it.

22. 22

    כֹּהthusאָמַרsaidאֲדֹנָיLordיֱהֹוִהGODוְלָקַחְתִּיand I will takeאָנִיIמִצַּמֶּרֶתfrom the treetop ofהָאֶרֶזthe cedarהָרָמָהthe highוְנָתָתִּיand I will place itמֵרֹאשׁfrom the top ofיֹנְקוֹתָיוits young shootsרַךְtenderאֶקְטֹףI will pluck offוְשָׁתַלְתִּיand I will plant itאָנִיIעַלuponהַר־גָּבֹהַּmountain heightוְתָלוּל׃and lofty

    Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also take of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon an high mountain and eminent:

23. 23

    בְּהַרon the mount ofמְרוֹםthe heights ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאֶשְׁתֳּלֶנּוּI will plant itוְנָשָׂאand it shall bring forthעָנָףa branchוְעָשָׂהand shall doפֶרִיfruitוְהָיָהand beלְאֶרֶזa cedarאַדִּירmajesticוְשָׁכְנוּand shall dwellתַחְתָּיוunder itכֹּלallצִפּוֹרbirdכׇּל־כָּנָףall the wingבְּצֵלin shadow ofדָּלִיּוֹתָיוits branchesתִּשְׁכֹּנָּה׃they will dwell

    In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.

24. 24

    וְיָדְעוּand they shall knowכׇּל־עֲצֵיall the trees ofהַשָּׂדֶהthe fieldכִּיthatאֲנִיIיְהֹוָהthe LORDהִשְׁפַּלְתִּיI bring lowעֵץa treeגָּבֹהַּhighהִגְבַּהְתִּיI raise upעֵץa treeשָׁפָלhumbleהוֹבַשְׁתִּיI make dryעֵץa treeלָחmoistוְהִפְרַחְתִּיand I make sproutעֵץa treeיָבֵשׁit has withered awayאֲנִיIיְהֹוָהthe LORDדִּבַּרְתִּיI have spokenוְעָשִׂיתִי׃and have done it

    And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it.
