Exodus 1 שְׁמוֹת פרק א׳

1. 1

   וְאֵלֶּהand theseשְׁמוֹתthe names ofבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהַבָּאִיםwhich cameמִצְרָיְמָהto Egyptאֵת־יַעֲקֹבwith Jacobאִישׁeach manוּבֵיתוֹand his houseבָּאוּ׃came

   Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.

2. 2

   רְאוּבֵןReubenשִׁמְעוֹןSimeonלֵוִיLeviוִיהוּדָה׃and Judah

   Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3. 3

   יִשָּׂשכָרIssacharזְבוּלֻןZebulunוּבִנְיָמִן׃and Benjamin

   Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4. 4

   דָּןDanוְנַפְתָּלִיand NaphtaliגָּדGadוְאָשֵׁר׃and Asher

   Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

5. 5

   וַיְהִיand wereכׇּל־נֶפֶשׁall the soulsיֹצְאֵיthose which came out ofיֶרֶךְ־יַעֲקֹבthe thigh of Jacobשִׁבְעִיםseventyנָפֶשׁsoulsוְיוֹסֵףand Josephהָיָהwasבְמִצְרָיִם׃in Egypt

   And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

6. 6

   וַיָּמׇתand he diedיוֹסֵףJosephוְכׇל־אֶחָיוand all his brethrenוְכֹלand allהַדּוֹרthe generationהַהוּא׃that

   And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

7. 7

   וּבְנֵיand sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelפָּרוּthey were fruitfulוַיִּשְׁרְצוּand they swarmedוַיִּרְבּוּand they did multiplyוַיַּעַצְמוּand waxed mightyבִּמְאֹדwith exceedingמְאֹדexceedinglyוַתִּמָּלֵאand was filledהָאָרֶץthe landאֹתָם׃them

   And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

8. 8

   וַיָּקׇםand there aroseמֶלֶךְ־חָדָשׁa new kingעַל־מִצְרָיִםupon Egyptאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־יָדַעnot he knewאֶת־יוֹסֵף׃Joseph

   Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

9. 9

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֶל־עַמּוֹunto his peopleהִנֵּהbeholdעַםthe people ofבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelרַבare moreוְעָצוּםand mightyמִמֶּנּוּ׃than we

   And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

10. 10

    הָבָהcomeנִתְחַכְּמָהlet us deal wiselyלוֹwith themפֶּן־יִרְבֶּהlest they multiplyוְהָיָהand it come to passכִּי־תִקְרֶאנָהwhen there falls outמִלְחָמָהwarוְנוֹסַףand they joinגַּם־הוּאalso theyעַל־שֹׂנְאֵינוּupon those who hate usוְנִלְחַם־בָּנוּand fight against usוְעָלָהand get them upמִן־הָאָרֶץ׃from the land

    Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

11. 11

    וַיָּשִׂימוּand they setעָלָיוover themשָׂרֵיtaskmasters ofמִסִּיםburdensלְמַעַןin order thatעַנֹּתוֹto afflict themבְּסִבְלֹתָםwith their burdensוַיִּבֶןand they builtעָרֵיcities ofמִסְכְּנוֹתstorageלְפַרְעֹהfor Pharaohאֶת־פִּתֹםPithomוְאֶת־רַעַמְסֵס׃and Rameses

    Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

12. 12

    וְכַאֲשֶׁרbut the moreיְעַנּוּthey afflictedאֹתוֹhimכֵּןthusיִרְבֶּהthey multipliedוְכֵןand soיִפְרֹץthey grewוַיָּקֻצוּand they were grievedמִפְּנֵיbecause ofבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

13. 13

    וַיַּעֲבִדוּand made serveמִצְרַיִםEgyptאֶת־בְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelבְּפָרֶךְ׃with rigor

    And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:

14. 14

    וַיְמָרְרוּand they made bitterאֶת־חַיֵּיהֶםtheir livesבַּעֲבֹדָהwith bondageקָשָׁהhardבְּחֹמֶרin mortarוּבִלְבֵנִיםand in bricksוּבְכׇל־עֲבֹדָהand in all laborבַּשָּׂדֶהin the fieldאֵת־כׇּל־עֲבֹדָתָםall their serviceאֲשֶׁר־עָבְדוּwherein they made serveבָהֶםof themבְּפָרֶךְ׃with rigor

    And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

15. 15

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidמֶלֶךְthe king ofמִצְרַיִםEgyptלַמְיַלְּדֹתto the midwivesהָעִבְרִיֹּתthe Hebrew womenאֲשֶׁרwhichשֵׁםthe name ofהָאַחַתthe oneשִׁפְרָהShiphrahוְשֵׁםand the name ofהַשֵּׁנִיתthe secondפּוּעָה׃Puah

    And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:

16. 16

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidבְּיַלֶּדְכֶןwhen you do the office of a midwife toאֶת־הָעִבְרִיּוֹתthe Hebrew womenוּרְאִיתֶןand you will lookעַל־הָאׇבְנָיִםupon the stonesאִם־בֵּןif a sonהוּאheוַהֲמִתֶּןthen you shall killאֹתוֹhimוְאִם־בַּתand if a daughterהִואsheוָחָיָה׃then she shall live

    And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

17. 17

    וַתִּירֶאןָand they fearedהַמְיַלְּדֹתthe midwivesאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִיםGodוְלֹאand notעָשׂוּthey didכַּאֲשֶׁרasדִּבֶּרspokeאֲלֵיהֶןto themמֶלֶךְthe king ofמִצְרָיִםEgyptוַתְּחַיֶּיןָbut saved aliveאֶת־הַיְלָדִים׃the children

    But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

18. 18

    וַיִּקְרָאand calledמֶלֶךְ־מִצְרַיִםking of Egyptלַמְיַלְּדֹתto the midwivesוַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהֶןto themמַדּוּעַwhyעֲשִׂיתֶןhave you doneהַדָּבָרthe thingהַזֶּהthisוַתְּחַיֶּיןָand have saved aliveאֶת־הַיְלָדִים׃the children

    And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

19. 19

    וַתֹּאמַרְןָand they saidהַמְיַלְּדֹתthe midwivesאֶל־פַּרְעֹהto Pharaohכִּיbecauseלֹאnotכַנָּשִׁיםas the womenהַמִּצְרִיֹּתthe Egyptianהָעִבְרִיֹּתthe Hebrewכִּי־חָיוֹתbecause livelyהֵנָּהthey areבְּטֶרֶםbeforeתָּבוֹאcomes inהַמְיַלֶּדֶתthe midwifeוְיָלָדוּ׃and are delivered

    And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

20. 20

    וַיֵּיטֶבtherefore dealt wellאֱלֹהִיםGodלַמְיַלְּדֹתto the midwivesוַיִּרֶבand multipliedהָעָםthe peopleוַיַּעַצְמוּand waxed very mightyמְאֹד׃exceedingly

    Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

21. 21

    וַיְהִיand it came to passכִּי־יָרְאוּbecause fearedהַמְיַלְּדֹתthe midwivesאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִיםGodוַיַּעַשׂand He madeלָהֶםto themבָּתִּים׃houses

    And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

22. 22

    וַיְצַוand commandedפַּרְעֹהPharaohלְכׇל־עַמּוֹto all his peopleלֵאמֹרsayingכׇּל־הַבֵּןevery sonהַיִּלּוֹדthat is bornהַיְאֹרָהinto the riverתַּשְׁלִיכֻהוּyou will throw himוְכׇל־הַבַּתand every daughterתְּחַיּוּן׃you shall save alive

    And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
