Daniel 5 דָּנִיֵּאל פרק ה׳

1. 1

   בֵּלְשַׁאצַּרBelshazzarמַלְכָּאthe kingעֲבַדhe madeלְחֶםa feastרַבgreatלְרַבְרְבָנוֹהִיfor his noblesאֲלַףa thousandוְלׇקֳבֵלand beforeאַלְפָּאthe thousandחַמְרָאwineשָׁתֵה׃he was drinking

   Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

2. 2

   בֵּלְשַׁאצַּרBelshazzarאֲמַרsaidבִּטְעֵםin the taste ofחַמְרָאwineלְהַיְתָיָהto bringלְמָאנֵיthe vessels ofדַּהֲבָאgoldוְכַסְפָּאand silverדִּיwhichהַנְפֵּקhe had brought outנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרNebuchadnezzarאֲבוּהִיhis fatherמִן־הֵיכְלָאfrom the palaceדִּיwhichבִירוּשְׁלֶםis in Jerusalemוְיִשְׁתּוֹןso they may drinkבְּהוֹןis on themמַלְכָּאthe kingוְרַבְרְבָנוֹהִיand his noblesשֵׁגְלָתֵהּhis wivesוּלְחֵנָתֵהּ׃and his concubines

   Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

   בֵּאדַיִןthenהַיְתִיוthey broughtמָאנֵיthe vessels ofדַהֲבָאgoldדִּיwhichהַנְפִּקוּthey had brought outמִן־הֵיכְלָאfrom the palaceדִּי־בֵיתwhich house ofאֱלָהָאGodדִּיwhichבִירוּשְׁלֶםis in Jerusalemוְאִשְׁתִּיוand they drankבְּהוֹןis on themמַלְכָּאthe kingוְרַבְרְבָנוֹהִיand his noblesשֵׁגְלָתֵהּhis wivesוּלְחֵנָתֵהּ׃and his concubines

   Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

   אִשְׁתִּיוthey drankחַמְרָאwineוְשַׁבַּחוּand praisedלֵאלָהֵיthe gods ofדַּהֲבָאgoldוְכַסְפָּאand silverנְחָשָׁאbronzeפַרְזְלָאthe ironאָעָאwoodוְאַבְנָא׃and the stone

   They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

   בַּהּ־שַׁעֲתָהat that moment[נְפַקָה]they went forthאֶצְבְּעָןfingersדִּיwhichיַד־אֱנָשׁhand of the man ofוְכָתְבָןand they were writingלׇקֳבֵלover againstנֶבְרַשְׁתָּאthe candlestickעַל־גִּירָאupon the plasterדִּי־כְתַלwhich the wall ofהֵיכְלָאthe palaceדִּיwhichמַלְכָּאthe kingוּמַלְכָּאand the kingחָזֵהseeingפַּסthe palm ofיְדָאthe handדִּיwhichכָתְבָה׃was writing

   In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

6. 6

   אֱדַיִןthenמַלְכָּאthe kingזִיוֺהִיhis brightnessשְׁנוֹהִיthey changed himוְרַעְיֹנֹהִיand his thoughtsיְבַהֲלוּנֵּהּthey alarmed himוְקִטְרֵיand the joints ofחַרְצֵהּhis loinsמִשְׁתָּרַיִןwere loosenedוְאַרְכֻבָּתֵהּand his kneesדָּאthis oneלְדָאto this oneנָקְשָׁן׃were knocking

   Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

   קָרֵאwas proclaimingמַלְכָּאthe kingבְּחַיִלaloudלְהֶעָלָהto bring inלְאָשְׁפַיָּאthe conjurers(כשדיא)[כַּשְׂדָּאֵי]Chaldeansוְגָזְרַיָּאand the astrologersעָנֵהwas replyingמַלְכָּאthe kingוְאָמַרand saidלְחַכִּימֵיthe wise men ofבָבֶלBabylonדִּיwhichכׇל־אֱנָשׁall the man ofדִּי־יִקְרֵהwhich he will read aloudכְּתָבָהthe writingדְנָהthisוּפִשְׁרֵהּand its interpretationיְחַוִּנַּנִיhe will declare to meאַרְגְּוָנָאpurpleיִלְבַּשׁshall put on[וְהַמְנִיכָא]and the necklaceדִי־דַהֲבָאof goldעַל־צַוְּארֵהּupon his neckוְתַלְתִּיand thirdבְמַלְכוּתָאin the kingdomיִשְׁלַט׃he will rule

   The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

8. 8

   אֱדַיִןthen[עׇלִּין]were going inכֹּלallחַכִּימֵיthe wise men ofמַלְכָּאthe kingוְלָא־כָהֲלִיןand not they were ableכְּתָבָאthe writingלְמִקְרֵאto read aloud(ופשרא)[וּפִשְׁרֵהּ]and interpretation itsלְהוֹדָעָהto make knownלְמַלְכָּא׃to the king

   Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

9. 9

   אֱדַיִןthenמַלְכָּאthe kingבֵלְשַׁאצַּרBelshazzarשַׂגִּיאis exaltedמִתְבָּהַלwas alarmedוְזִיוֺהִיand his countenanceשָׁנַיִןwere changingעֲלוֹהִיto himוְרַבְרְבָנוֹהִיand his noblesמִשְׁתַּבְּשִׁין׃were dumbfounded

   Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.

10. 10

    מַלְכְּתָאthe queenלׇקֳבֵלover againstמִלֵּיthe words ofמַלְכָּאthe kingוְרַבְרְבָנוֹהִיand his noblesלְבֵיתto the house ofמִשְׁתְּיָאthe feast(עללת)[עַלַּת]she went inעֲנָתshe answeredמַלְכְּתָאthe queenוַאֲמֶרֶתand saidמַלְכָּאthe kingלְעָלְמִיןfor everחֱיִיliveאַל־יְבַהֲלוּךְdo not they alarm youרַעְיוֹנָךְyour thoughts(וזיויך)[וְזִיוָךְ]and your countenanceאַל־יִשְׁתַּנּוֹ׃do not they be changed

    Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:

11. 11

    אִיתַיthere isגְּבַרmanבְּמַלְכוּתָךְin your kingdomדִּיwhichרוּחַthe spirit ofאֱלָהִיןgodsקַדִּישִׁיןholy onesבֵּהּat itוּבְיוֹמֵיand in the days ofאֲבוּךְyour fatherנַהִירוּilluminationוְשׇׂכְלְתָנוּand insightוְחׇכְמָהand wisdomכְּחׇכְמַת־אֱלָהִיןlike the wisdom of godsהִשְׁתְּכַחַתit was foundבֵּהּat itוּמַלְכָּאand the kingנְבֻכַדְנֶצַּרNebuchadnezzarאֲבוּךְyour fatherרַבgreatחַרְטֻמִּיןmagiciansאָשְׁפִיןconjurersכַּשְׂדָּאִיןChaldeanגָּזְרִיןastrologersהֲקִימֵהּhe appointed himאֲבוּךְyour fatherמַלְכָּא׃the king

    There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

12. 12

    כׇּל־קֳבֵלall becauseדִּיwhichרוּחַthe spirit ofיַתִּירָהsurpassingוּמַנְדַּעand understandingוְשׇׂכְלְתָנוּand insightמְפַשַּׁרan interpreter ofחֶלְמִיןdreamsוְאַחֲוָיַתand declaring ofאֲחִידָןriddlesוּמְשָׁרֵאand loosening ofקִטְרִיןknotsהִשְׁתְּכַחַתit was foundבֵּהּat itבְּדָנִיֵּאלin Danielדִּי־מַלְכָּאwhich the kingשָׂם־שְׁמֵהּset his nameבֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּרBelteshazzarכְּעַןnowדָּנִיֵּאלDanielיִתְקְרֵיlet him be summonedוּפִשְׁרָהand the interpretationיְהַחֲוֵה׃he will declare

    Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

13. 13

    בֵּאדַיִןthenדָּנִיֵּאלDanielהֻעַלhe was broughtקֳדָםbeforeמַלְכָּאthe kingעָנֵהwas replyingמַלְכָּאthe kingוְאָמַרand saidלְדָנִיֵּאלto Daniel(אנתה)[אַנְתְּ־]הוּאyou areדָנִיֵּאלDanielדִּי־מִן־בְּנֵיwhich from the sons ofגָלוּתָאthe exileדִּיwhichיְהוּדJudahדִּיwhichהַיְתִיbroughtמַלְכָּאthe kingאַבִיmy fatherמִן־יְהוּד׃from Judah

    Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

14. 14

    וְשִׁמְעֵתand I have heard(עליך)[עֲלָךְ]upon youדִּיwhichרוּחַthe spirit ofאֱלָהִיןgodsבָּךְin youוְנַהִירוּand illuminationוְשׇׂכְלְתָנוּand insightוְחׇכְמָהand wisdomיַתִּירָהsurpassingהִשְׁתְּכַחַתit was foundבָּךְ׃in you

    I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.

15. 15

    וּכְעַןand nowהֻעַלּוּthey have been broughtקׇדָמַיbefore meחַכִּימַיָּאthe wise menאָשְׁפַיָּאthe conjurersדִּי־כְתָבָהwhich the writingדְנָהthisיִקְרוֹןthey will read aloudוּפִשְׁרֵהּand its interpretationלְהוֹדָעֻתַנִיto make known to meוְלָא־כָהֲלִיןand not they were ableפְּשַׁר־מִלְּתָאthe interpretation of the wordלְהַחֲוָיָה׃to declare

    And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:

16. 16

    וַאֲנָהand IשִׁמְעֵתI have heard(עליך)[עֲלָךְ]upon youדִּי־[תִכּוּל]which you will be able(תוכל)פִּשְׁרִיןinterpretationsלְמִפְשַׁרto interpretוְקִטְרִיןand knotsלְמִשְׁרֵאto loosenכְּעַןnowהֵןbehold(תוכל)[תִּכּוּל]you will be ableכְּתָבָאthe writingלְמִקְרֵאto read aloudוּפִשְׁרֵהּand its interpretationלְהוֹדָעוּתַנִיto make known to meאַרְגְּוָנָאpurpleתִלְבַּשׁyou will wear[וְהַמְנִיכָא]and the necklaceדִי־דַהֲבָאof goldעַל־צַוְּארָךְupon your neckוְתַלְתָּאand the thirdבְמַלְכוּתָאin the kingdomתִּשְׁלַט׃you will rule

    And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

17. 17

    בֵּאדַיִןthenעָנֵהwas replyingדָנִיֵּאלDanielוְאָמַרand saidקֳדָםbeforeמַלְכָּאthe kingמַתְּנָתָךְyour giftsלָךְto youלֶהֶוְיָןlet them beוּנְבָזְבְּיָתָךְand your rewardsלְאׇחֳרָןto anotherהַבgiveבְּרַםneverthelessכְּתָבָאthe writingאֶקְרֵאI will read aloudלְמַלְכָּאto the kingוּפִשְׁרָאand the interpretationאֲהוֹדְעִנֵּהּ׃I will make known to him

    Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

18. 18

    (אנתה)[אַנְתְּ]youמַלְכָּאthe kingאֱלָהָאGod(עליא)[עִלָּאָה]the Most Highמַלְכוּתָאthe kingdomוּרְבוּתָאand the greatnessוִיקָרָאand the honorוְהַדְרָאand the honorיְהַבhe gaveלִנְבֻכַדְנֶצַּרto Nebuchadnezzarאֲבוּךְ׃your father

    O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

19. 19

    וּמִן־רְבוּתָאand from the greatnessדִּיwhichיְהַב־לֵהּhe gave to himכֹּלallעַמְמַיָּאthe peoplesאֻמַּיָּאthe nationsוְלִשָּׁנַיָּאand languagesהֲווֹthey were[זָיְעִין]tremblingוְדָחֲלִיןand fearingמִן־קֳדָמוֹהִיfrom before himדִּי־הֲוָאwhich it wasצָבֵאpleasedהֲוָהwasקָטֵלkillingוְדִי־הֲוָהand whom he wouldצָבֵאpleasedהֲוָהwasמַחֵאletting liveוְדִי־הֲוָהand whom he wouldצָבֵאpleasedהֲוָהwasמָרִיםsetting upוְדִי־הֲוָאand whom he wouldצָבֵאpleasedהֲוָאit wasמַשְׁפִּל׃putting down

    And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.

20. 20

    וּכְדִיand as thatרִםit rose upלִבְבֵהּits heartוְרוּחֵהּand his spiritתִּקְפַתit grew strongלַהֲזָדָהto act presumptuouslyהׇנְחַתhe was deposedמִן־כׇּרְסֵאfrom the throne ofמַלְכוּתֵהּhis kingdomוִיקָרָהand his gloryהֶעְדִּיוthey removedמִנֵּהּ׃from him

    But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

21. 21

    וּמִן־בְּנֵיand from the sons ofאֲנָשָׁאmenטְרִידhe was chasedוְלִבְבֵהּand his heartעִם־חֵיוְתָאwith the animals[שַׁוִּיו]they madeוְעִם־עֲרָדַיָּאand with the wild donkeysמְדֹרֵהּhis dwellingעִשְׂבָּאgrassכְתוֹרִיןlike oxenיְטַעֲמוּנֵּהּthey fed himוּמִטַּלand away from the dew ofשְׁמַיָּאheavensגִּשְׁמֵהּhis bodyיִצְטַבַּעlet it become wetעַדuntilדִּי־יְדַעwhich knowדִּי־שַׁלִּיטwhich rulerאֱלָהָאGod(עליא)[עִלָּאָה]the Most Highבְּמַלְכוּתin the kingdom ofאֲנָשָׁאmenוּלְמַן־דִּיand to whomever whichיִצְבֵּאhe will be pleasedיְהָקֵיםhe will appoint(עליה)[עֲלַהּ]׃over it

    And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

22. 22

    (ואנתה)[וְאַנְתְּ]and youבְּרֵהּhis sonבֵּלְשַׁאצַּרBelshazzarלָאnotהַשְׁפֵּלְתְּyou have brought lowלִבְבָךְyour heartכׇּל־קֳבֵלall becauseדִּיwhichכׇל־דְּנָהall thisיְדַעְתָּ׃you knew

    And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;

23. 23

    וְעַלand uponמָרֵא־שְׁמַיָּאthe lord of heavensהִתְרוֹמַמְתָּyou have lifted yourself upוּלְמָאנַיָּאand the vesselsדִי־בַיְתֵהּof his houseהַיְתִיוthey brought[קׇדָמָךְ]before you(ואנתה)[וְאַנְתְּ]and you[וְרַבְרְבָנָךְ]and nobles yourשֵׁגְלָתָךְyour wivesוּלְחֵנָתָךְand your concubinesחַמְרָאwineשָׁתַיִןare drinkingבְּהוֹןis on themוְלֵאלָהֵיand the gods ofכַסְפָּא־וְדַהֲבָאthe silver and the goldנְחָשָׁאbronzeפַרְזְלָאthe ironאָעָאwoodוְאַבְנָאand the stoneדִּיwhichלָא־חָזַיִןnot they were seeingוְלָא־שָׁמְעִיןand not were hearingוְלָאand notיָדְעִיןare knowingשַׁבַּחְתָּyou have praisedוְלֵאלָהָאand the Godדִּי־נִשְׁמְתָךְwhich your breathבִּידֵהּin his handוְכׇל־אֹרְחָתָךְand all your waysלֵהּto himלָאnotהַדַּרְתָּ׃you have glorified

    But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

24. 24

    בֵּאדַיִןthenמִן־קֳדָמוֹהִיfrom before himשְׁלִיחַwas sentפַּסָּאthe palmדִי־יְדָאof the handוּכְתָבָאand the writingדְנָהthisרְשִׁים׃it was inscribed

    Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

25. 25

    וּדְנָהand thisכְתָבָאis the writingדִּיwhichרְשִׁיםit was inscribedמְנֵאmeneמְנֵאmeneתְּקֵלteqelוּפַרְסִין׃and pharsin

    And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26. 26

    דְּנָהthisפְּשַׁר־מִלְּתָאthe interpretation of the wordמְנֵאmeneמְנָה־אֱלָהָאhe has numbered Godמַלְכוּתָךְyour kingdomוְהַשְׁלְמַהּ׃and he has finished it

    This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

27. 27

    תְּקֵלteqelתְּקִילְתָּyou are weighedבְמֹאזַנְיָאin the scalesוְהִשְׁתְּכַחַתְּand you have been foundחַסִּיר׃lacking

    TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

28. 28

    פְּרֵסperesפְּרִיסַתit has been broken in twoמַלְכוּתָךְyour kingdomוִיהִיבַתand it has been givenלְמָדַיto the Medesוּפָרָס׃and Persia

    PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

29. 29

    בֵּאדַיִןthenאֲמַרsaidבֵּלְשַׁאצַּרBelshazzarוְהַלְבִּשׁוּand they clothedלְדָנִיֵּאלto Danielאַרְגְּוָנָאpurple[וְהַמְנִיכָא]and the necklaceדִי־דַהֲבָאof goldעַל־צַוְּארֵהּupon his neckוְהַכְרִזוּand they made proclamationעֲלוֹהִיto himדִּי־לֶהֱוֵאwhich let it beשַׁלִּיטrulerתַּלְתָּאthe thirdבְּמַלְכוּתָא׃in the kingdom

    Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30. 30

    בֵּהּat itבְּלֵילְיָאon the nightקְטִילhe was killedבֵּלְאשַׁצַּרBelshazzarמַלְכָּאthe king(כשדיא)[כַשְׂדָּאָה]׃the Chaldean

    In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
