    Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

    Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

    They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

    בַּהּ־שַׁעֲתָהba-sha/a/TAin that hour[נְפַקָה]ne/fa/KAcame outאֶצְבְּעָןets/be/ANfingersדִּיdiofיַד־אֱנָשׁyad-e/NASHa man’s handוְכָתְבָןve/kha/te/VANand wroteלׇקֳבֵלlo/ko/VELoppositeנֶבְרַשְׁתָּאnev/rash/TAthe lampstandעַל־גִּירָאal-gi/RAon the plasterדִּי־כְתַלdi-khe/TALof the wall ofהֵיכְלָאhe/khe/LAthe palaceדִּיdiofמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe kingוּמַלְכָּאu/mal/KAand the kingחָזֵהcha/ZEsawפַּסpasthe palm ofיְדָאye/DAthe handדִּיdithatכָתְבָה׃kha/te/VAwrote

    In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

    Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

    The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

    Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

    Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.

    מַלְכְּתָאmal/ke/TAthe queenלׇקֳבֵלlo/ko/VELbecause ofמִלֵּיmil/LEthe words ofמַלְכָּאmal/KAO kingוְרַבְרְבָנוֹהִיve/rav/re/va/NO/hiand his noblesלְבֵיתle/VETinto the house ofמִשְׁתְּיָאmish/te/YAthe feast(עללת)lalat[עַלַּת]al/LATcame inעֲנָתa/NATspokeמַלְכְּתָאmal/ke/TAthe queenוַאֲמֶרֶתva/a/ME/retand saidמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe kingלְעָלְמִיןle/a/le/MINforeverחֱיִיche/YIliveאַל־יְבַהֲלוּךְal-ye/va/ha/LUKHlet not terrify youרַעְיוֹנָךְra/yo/NAKHyour thoughts(וזיויך)vazayavayakh[וְזִיוָךְ]ve/zi/VAKHand your brightnessאַל־יִשְׁתַּנּוֹ׃al-yish/tan/NOlet not be changed

    Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:

    There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

    Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

    בֵּאדַיִןbe/DA/yinthenדָּנִיֵּאלDa/niy/YELDanielהֻעַלhu/ALwas brought inקֳדָםko/DAMbeforeמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe kingעָנֵהa/NEspokeמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe kingוְאָמַרve/a/MARand saidלְדָנִיֵּאלle/Da/niy/YELto Daniel(אנתה)natah[אַנְתְּ־]הוּאant-huare youדָנִיֵּאלDa/niy/YELDanielדִּי־מִן־בְּנֵיdi-min-be/NEwho is of the sons ofגָלוּתָאga/lu/TAthe exileדִּיdiofיְהוּדYe/HUDJudahדִּיdiwhomהַיְתִיhay/TIbroughtמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe kingאַבִיA/vimy fatherמִן־יְהוּד׃min-Ye/HUDfrom Judah

    Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

    וְשִׁמְעֵתve/shim/ETand I have heard(עליך)layakh[עֲלָךְ]a/LAKHof youדִּיdithatרוּחַRU/achthe spirit ofאֱלָהִיןe/la/HINof the godsבָּךְbakhin youוְנַהִירוּve/na/hi/RUand lightוְשׇׂכְלְתָנוּve/sokh/le/ta/NUand insightוְחׇכְמָהve/chokh/MAand wisdomיַתִּירָהyat/ti/RAextraordinaryהִשְׁתְּכַחַתhish/te/KHA/chatis foundבָּךְ׃bakhin you

    I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.

    וּכְעַןu/khe/ANand nowהֻעַלּוּhu/AL/luwere brought inקׇדָמַיko/da/MAYbefore meחַכִּימַיָּאchak/ki/may/YAthe wise menאָשְׁפַיָּאa/she/fay/YAthe conjurersדִּי־כְתָבָהdi-khe/ta/VAthat the writingדְנָהde/NAthisיִקְרוֹןyik/RONshould readוּפִשְׁרֵהּu/fish/REand its interpretationלְהוֹדָעֻתַנִיle/ho/da/u/TA/nito make known to meוְלָא־כָהֲלִיןve/LA-kha/ha/LINand they were not ableפְּשַׁר־מִלְּתָאpe/SHAR-mil/le/TAthe interpretation of the thingלְהַחֲוָיָה׃le/ha/cha/va/YAto declare

    And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:

    וַאֲנָהva/a/NAand Iשִׁמְעֵתshim/EThave heard(עליך)layakh[עֲלָךְ]a/LAKHof youדִּי־[תִכּוּל]di-tik/KULthat you can(תוכל)tavakhalפִּשְׁרִיןpish/RINinterpretationsלְמִפְשַׁרle/mif/SHARinterpretוְקִטְרִיןve/kit/RINand knotsלְמִשְׁרֵאle/mish/RElooseכְּעַןke/ANnowהֵןhenif(תוכל)tavakhal[תִּכּוּל]tik/KULyou canכְּתָבָאke/ta/VAthe writingלְמִקְרֵאle/mik/REreadוּפִשְׁרֵהּu/fish/REand its interpretationלְהוֹדָעוּתַנִיle/ho/da/u/TA/nito make known to meאַרְגְּוָנָאar/ge/va/NApurpleתִלְבַּשׁtil/BASHyou will wear[וְהַמְנִיכָא]ve/ham/ni/KHAand the necklaceדִי־דַהֲבָאdi-da/ha/VAof goldעַל־צַוְּארָךְal-tsav/ve/RAKHon your neckוְתַלְתָּאve/tal/TAand as thirdבְמַלְכוּתָאve/mal/khu/TAin the kingdomתִּשְׁלַט׃tish/LATyou will rule

    And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

    בֵּאדַיִןbe/DA/yinthenעָנֵהa/NEansweredדָנִיֵּאלDa/niy/YELDanielוְאָמַרve/a/MARand saidקֳדָםko/DAMbeforeמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe kingמַתְּנָתָךְmat/te/na/TAKHyour giftsלָךְlakhfor yourselfלֶהֶוְיָןle/hev/YANlet beוּנְבָזְבְּיָתָךְun/voz/be/ya/TAKHand your rewardsלְאׇחֳרָןle/o/cho/RANto anotherהַבhavgiveבְּרַםbe/RAMbutכְּתָבָאke/ta/VAthe writingאֶקְרֵאek/REI will readלְמַלְכָּאle/mal/KAto the kingוּפִשְׁרָאu/fish/RAand the interpretationאֲהוֹדְעִנֵּהּ׃a/hod/in/NEI will make known to him

    Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

    (אנתה)natah[אַנְתְּ]antyouמַלְכָּאmal/KAO kingאֱלָהָאe/la/HAGod(עליא)lay[עִלָּאָה]Il/la/Athe Most Highמַלְכוּתָאmal/khu/TAthe kingdomוּרְבוּתָאu/re/vu/TAand the greatnessוִיקָרָאvi/ka/RAand the honorוְהַדְרָאve/had/RAand majestyיְהַבye/HAVgaveלִנְבֻכַדְנֶצַּרLin/vu/khad/nets/TSARto Nebuchadnezzarאֲבוּךְ׃a/VUKHyour father

    O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

  19. 19

    וּמִן־רְבוּתָאu/MIN-re/vu/TAand from the greatnessדִּיdithatיְהַב־לֵהּye/HAV-leHe gave himכֹּלkolallעַמְמַיָּאam/may/YAthe peoplesאֻמַּיָּאum/may/YAthe nationsוְלִשָּׁנַיָּאve/lish/sha/nay/YAand languagesהֲווֹha/VOwere[זָיְעִין]za/ye/INtremblingוְדָחֲלִיןve/da/cha/LINand fearingמִן־קֳדָמוֹהִיmin-ko/da/MO/hibefore himדִּי־הֲוָאdi-ha/VAwhom heצָבֵאtsa/VEwishedהֲוָהha/VAheקָטֵלka/TELkilledוְדִי־הֲוָהve/DI-ha/VAand whom heצָבֵאtsa/VEwishedהֲוָהha/VAheמַחֵאma/CHEkept aliveוְדִי־הֲוָהve/DI-ha/VAand whom heצָבֵאtsa/VEwishedהֲוָהha/VAheמָרִיםma/RIMraisedוְדִי־הֲוָאve/DI-ha/VAand whom heצָבֵאtsa/VEwishedהֲוָאha/VAheמַשְׁפִּל׃mash/PILput down

    And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.

    וּכְדִיu/khe/DIand whenרִםrimwas lifted upלִבְבֵהּliv/VEhis heartוְרוּחֵהּve/ru/CHEand his spiritתִּקְפַתtik/FATwas hardenedלַהֲזָדָהla/ha/za/DAto act proudlyהׇנְחַתhon/CHAThe was brought downמִן־כׇּרְסֵאmin-kor/SEfrom the throne ofמַלְכוּתֵהּmal/khu/TEhis kingdomוִיקָרָהvi/ka/RAand his gloryהֶעְדִּיוhe/DIVthey tookמִנֵּהּ׃min/NEfrom him

    But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

    וּמִן־בְּנֵיu/MIN-be/NEand from the sons ofאֲנָשָׁאa/na/SHAmenטְרִידte/RIDhe was drivenוְלִבְבֵהּve/liv/VEand his heartעִם־חֵיוְתָאim-che/ve/TAwith the beasts[שַׁוִּיו]shav/VIVwas made likeוְעִם־עֲרָדַיָּאve/IM-a/ra/day/YAand with the wild donkeysמְדֹרֵהּme/do/REwas his dwellingעִשְׂבָּאis/BAgrassכְתוֹרִיןkhe/to/RINlike oxenיְטַעֲמוּנֵּהּye/ta/a/mun/NEthey made him eatוּמִטַּלu/mit/TALand with the dew ofשְׁמַיָּאshe/may/YAheavenגִּשְׁמֵהּgish/MEhis bodyיִצְטַבַּעyits/tab/BAwas wetעַדaduntilדִּי־יְדַעdi-ye/DAhe knewדִּי־שַׁלִּיטdi-shal/LITthat rulesאֱלָהָאe/la/HAGod(עליא)lay[עִלָּאָה]Il/la/Athe Most Highבְּמַלְכוּתbe/mal/KHUTin the kingdom ofאֲנָשָׁאa/na/SHAmenוּלְמַן־דִּיu/le/MAN-diand whomeverיִצְבֵּאyits/BEHe willsיְהָקֵיםye/ha/KEMHe sets up(עליה)layah[עֲלַהּ]׃a/LAover it

    And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

    And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;

    But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

    בֵּאדַיִןbe/DA/yinthenמִן־קֳדָמוֹהִיmin-ko/da/MO/hifrom before Himשְׁלִיחַshe/LI/achwas sentפַּסָּאpas/SAthe palmדִי־יְדָאdi-ye/DAof the handוּכְתָבָאu/khe/ta/VAand the writingדְנָהde/NAthisרְשִׁים׃re/SHIMwas inscribed

    Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

    וּדְנָהu/de/NAand thisכְתָבָאkhe/ta/VAis the writingדִּיdithatרְשִׁיםre/SHIMwas inscribedמְנֵאMe/NEMeneמְנֵאMe/NEMeneתְּקֵלTe/KELTekelוּפַרְסִין׃u/Far/SINand Parsin

    And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

    דְּנָהde/NAthisפְּשַׁר־מִלְּתָאpe/SHAR-mil/le/TAthe interpretation of the thingמְנֵאMe/NEMeneמְנָה־אֱלָהָאme/NA-e/la/HAGod has numberedמַלְכוּתָךְmal/khu/TAKHyour kingdomוְהַשְׁלְמַהּ׃ve/hash/le/MAand brought it to an end

    This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

  27. 27

    תְּקֵלTe/KELTekelתְּקִילְתָּte/KIL/tayou have been weighedבְמֹאזַנְיָאve/mo/zan/YAin the scalesוְהִשְׁתְּכַחַתְּve/hish/te/KHA/chattand foundחַסִּיר׃chas/SIRlacking

    TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

    פְּרֵסPe/RESPeresפְּרִיסַתpe/ri/SATis dividedמַלְכוּתָךְmal/khu/TAKHyour kingdomוִיהִיבַתvi/hi/VATand givenלְמָדַיle/Ma/DAYto the Medesוּפָרָס׃u/Fa/RASand Persia

    PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

    בֵּאדַיִןbe/DA/yinthenאֲמַרa/MARcommandedבֵּלְשַׁאצַּרBel/sha/TSARBelshazzarוְהַלְבִּשׁוּve/hal/BI/shuand they clothedלְדָנִיֵּאלLe/da/niy/YELDanielאַרְגְּוָנָאar/ge/va/NApurple[וְהַמְנִיכָא]ve/ham/ni/KHAand the necklaceדִי־דַהֲבָאdi-da/ha/VAof goldעַל־צַוְּארֵהּal-tsav/ve/REon his neckוְהַכְרִזוּve/hakh/RI/zuand they proclaimedעֲלוֹהִיa/LO/hiabout himדִּי־לֶהֱוֵאdi-le/he/VEthat he would beשַׁלִּיטshal/LITrulerתַּלְתָּאtal/TAas thirdבְּמַלְכוּתָא׃be/mal/khu/TAin the kingdom

    Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

    בֵּהּbein thatבְּלֵילְיָאbe/le/le/YAnightקְטִילke/TILwas killedבֵּלְאשַׁצַּרBel/shats/TSARBelshazzarמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe king(כשדיא)khashaday[כַשְׂדָּאָה]׃Khas/da/Athe Chaldean

    In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
