    אֲנָהIנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרNebuchadnezzarשְׁלֵהat easeהֲוֵיתI wasבְּבֵיתִיin my houseוְרַעְנַןand flourishingבְּהֵיכְלִי׃in my palace

    I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace:

    חֵלֶםa dreamחֲזֵיתI sawוִידַחֲלִנַּנִיand it made afraid meוְהַרְהֹרִיןand imaginingsעַל־מִשְׁכְּבִיupon my bedוְחֶזְוֵיand the visions ofרֵאשִׁיmy headיְבַהֲלֻנַּנִי׃they alarmed me

    I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

    וּמִנִּיand from meשִׂיםputטְעֵםcommandלְהַנְעָלָהto bring inקׇדָמַיbefore meלְכֹלfor allחַכִּימֵיthe wise men ofבָבֶלBabylonדִּי־פְשַׁרwhich the interpretation ofחֶלְמָאthe dreamיְהוֹדְעֻנַּנִי׃they will make known to me

    Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream.

    בֵּאדַיִןthen[עׇלִּין]were going inחַרְטֻמַּיָּאthe magiciansאָשְׁפַיָּאthe conjurers(כשדיא)[כַּשְׂדָּאֵי]Chaldeansוְגָזְרַיָּאand the astrologersוְחֶלְמָאand the dreamאָמַרsaidאֲנָהIקֳדָמֵיהוֹןbefore themוּפִשְׁרֵהּand its interpretationלָא־מְהוֹדְעִיןnot are making knownלִי׃to me

    Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.

    וְעַדand untoאׇחֳרֵיןat lastעַלcame inקׇדָמַיbefore meדָּנִיֵּאלDanielדִּי־שְׁמֵהּwhich his nameבֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּרBelteshazzarכְּשֻׁםlike the name ofאֱלָהִיmy godוְדִיand in whomרוּחַ־אֱלָהִיןspirit of godsקַדִּישִׁיןholy onesבֵּהּat itוְחֶלְמָאand the dreamקׇדָמוֹהִיbefore himאַמְרֵת׃I said

    But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying,

    בֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּרBelteshazzarרַבgreatחַרְטֻמַּיָּאthe magiciansדִּיwhichאֲנָהIיִדְעֵתI knowדִּיwhichרוּחַthe spirit ofאֱלָהִיןgodsקַדִּישִׁיןholy onesבָּךְin youוְכׇל־רָזand all secretלָא־אָנֵסnot is oppressingלָךְto youחֶזְוֵיthe visions ofחֶלְמִיmy dreamדִי־חֲזֵיתof I sawוּפִשְׁרֵהּand its interpretationאֱמַר׃tell

    O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.

    וְחֶזְוֵיand the visions ofרֵאשִׁיmy headעַל־מִשְׁכְּבִיupon my bedחָזֵהseeingהֲוֵיתI wasוַאֲלוּand lo!אִילָןa treeבְּגוֹאin the midst ofאַרְעָאthe earthוְרוּמֵהּand its heightשַׂגִּיא׃is exalted

    Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.

    רְבָהit grew greatאִילָנָאthe treeוּתְקִףand it grew strongוְרוּמֵהּand its heightיִמְטֵאit reachedלִשְׁמַיָּאto the heavensוַחֲזוֹתֵהּand the sight of itלְסוֹףto the end ofכׇּל־אַרְעָא׃all the earth

    The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:

    עׇפְיֵהּits foliageשַׁפִּירwas beautifulוְאִנְבֵּהּand its fruitשַׂגִּיאis exaltedוּמָזוֹןand nourishmentלְכֹלָּא־בֵהּfor all was on itתְּחֹתוֹהִיunder itתַּטְלֵלit had shadeחֵיוַתthe animals ofבָּרָאof the fieldוּבְעַנְפוֹהִיand in its branches[יְדוּרָן]they nestedצִפְּרֵיthe birds ofשְׁמַיָּאheavensוּמִנֵּהּand from itיִתְּזִיןit fedכׇּל־בִּשְׂרָא׃all flesh

    The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it.

    חָזֵהseeingהֲוֵיתI wasבְּחֶזְוֵיin the visions ofרֵאשִׁיmy headעַל־מִשְׁכְּבִיupon my bedוַאֲלוּand lo!עִירa watcherוְקַדִּישׁand a holy oneמִן־שְׁמַיָּאfrom heavensנָחִת׃was coming down

    I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven;

    קָרֵאwas proclaimingבְחַיִלaloudוְכֵןand soאָמַרsaidגֹּדּוּcut downאִילָנָאthe treeוְקַצִּצוּand cut offעַנְפוֹהִיits branchesאַתַּרוּstrip offעׇפְיֵהּits foliageוּבַדַּרוּand the scatterאִנְבֵּהּits fruitתְּנֻדlet it fleeחֵיוְתָאthe beastמִן־תַּחְתּוֹהִיfrom under itוְצִפְּרַיָּאand the birdsמִן־עַנְפוֹהִי׃from its branches

    He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches:

    בְּרַםneverthelessעִקַּרthe stump ofשׇׁרְשׁוֹהִיits rootsבְּאַרְעָאin the groundשְׁבֻקוּleaveוּבֶאֱסוּרand with a fetterדִּי־פַרְזֶלwhich ironוּנְחָשׁand bronzeבְּדִתְאָאin the grassדִּיwhichבָרָאof the fieldוּבְטַלand with the dew ofשְׁמַיָּאheavensיִצְטַבַּעlet it become wetוְעִם־חֵיוְתָאand with the animalsחֲלָקֵהּits portionבַּעֲשַׂבin the grass ofאַרְעָא׃the earth

    Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:

  13. 13

    לִבְבֵהּits heartמִן־[אֲנָשָׁא]from menיְשַׁנּוֹןlet it be changedוּלְבַבand the heart ofחֵיוָהan animalיִתְיְהִבlet it be givenלֵהּto himוְשִׁבְעָהand sevenעִדָּנִיןtimesיַחְלְפוּןlet them passעֲלוֹהִי׃to him

    Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.

    בִּגְזֵרַתby the decree ofעִירִיןwatchersפִּתְגָמָאthe decreeוּמֵאמַרand is by the word ofקַדִּישִׁיןholy onesשְׁאֵלְתָאthe affairעַד־דִּבְרַתuntil matter ofדִּיwhichיִנְדְּעוּןthey will knowחַיַּיָּאthe living peopleדִּי־שַׁלִּיטwhich ruler(עליא)[עִלָּאָה]the Most Highבְּמַלְכוּתin the kingdom of[אֲנָשָׁא]menוּלְמַן־דִּיand to whomever whichיִצְבֵּאhe will be pleasedיִתְּנִנַּהּhe will give itוּשְׁפַלand lowly ofאֲנָשִׁיםmenיְקִיםhe will set up(עליה)[עֲלַהּ]׃over it

    This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

    דְּנָהthisחֶלְמָאthe dreamחֲזֵיתI sawאֲנָהIמַלְכָּאthe kingנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרNebuchadnezzar(ואנתה)[וְאַנְתְּ]and youבֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּרBelteshazzarפִּשְׁרֵאits interpretationאֱמַרtellכׇּל־קֳבֵלall becauseדִּיwhichכׇּל־חַכִּימֵיall the wise men ofמַלְכוּתִיmy kingdomלָא־יָכְלִיןnot are being ableפִּשְׁרָאthe interpretationלְהוֹדָעוּתַנִיto make known to me(ואנתה)[וְאַנְתְּ]and youכָּהֵלableדִּיwhichרוּחַ־אֱלָהִיןspirit of godsקַדִּישִׁיןholy onesבָּךְ׃in you

    This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.

    אֱדַיִןthenדָּנִיֵּאלDanielדִּי־שְׁמֵהּwhich his nameבֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּרBelteshazzarאֶשְׁתּוֹמַםhe was appalledכְּשָׁעָהabout a momentחֲדָהoneוְרַעְיֹנֹהִיand his thoughtsיְבַהֲלֻנֵּהּthey alarmed himעָנֵהwas replyingמַלְכָּאthe kingוְאָמַרand saidבֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּרBelteshazzarחֶלְמָאthe dreamוּפִשְׁרֵאand its interpretationאַל־יְבַהֲלָךְdo not it alarm youעָנֵהwas replyingבֵלְטְשַׁאצַּרBelteshazzarוְאָמַרand saidמָרִאיmy lordחֶלְמָאthe dream[לְשָׂנְאָךְ]be to those who hate youוּפִשְׁרֵהּand its interpretation[לְעָרָךְ]׃to your adversaries

    Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.

    אִילָנָאthe treeדִּיwhichחֲזַיְתָyou sawדִּיwhichרְבָהit grew greatוּתְקִףand it grew strongוְרוּמֵהּand its heightיִמְטֵאit reachedלִשְׁמַיָּאto the heavensוַחֲזוֹתֵהּand the sight of itלְכׇל־אַרְעָא׃to all the earth

    The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;

    וְעׇפְיֵהּand its foliageשַׁפִּירwas beautifulוְאִנְבֵּהּand its fruitשַׂגִּיאis exaltedוּמָזוֹןand nourishmentלְכֹלָּא־בֵהּfor all was on itתְּחֹתוֹהִיunder itתְּדוּרit dweltחֵיוַתthe animals ofבָּרָאof the fieldוּבְעַנְפוֹהִיand in its branchesיִשְׁכְּנָןthey dweltצִפְּרֵיthe birds ofשְׁמַיָּא׃heavens

    Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation:

    (אנתה)[אַנְתְּ־]הוּאyou areמַלְכָּאthe kingדִּיwhich(רבית)[רְבַת]it has grown greatוּתְקֵפְתְּand you have grown strongוּרְבוּתָךְand your greatnessרְבָתit has grown greatוּמְטָתand it has reachedלִשְׁמַיָּאto the heavensוְשׇׁלְטָנָךְand your dominionלְסוֹףto the end ofאַרְעָא׃the earth

    It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

    וְדִיand whereasחֲזָהsawמַלְכָּאthe kingעִירa watcherוְקַדִּישׁand a holy oneנָחִתwas coming downמִן־שְׁמַיָּאfrom heavensוְאָמַרand saidגֹּדּוּcut downאִילָנָאthe treeוְחַבְּלוּהִיand destroy itבְּרַםneverthelessעִקַּרthe stump ofשׇׁרְשׁוֹהִיits rootsבְּאַרְעָאin the groundשְׁבֻקוּleaveוּבֶאֱסוּרand with a fetterדִּי־פַרְזֶלwhich ironוּנְחָשׁand bronzeבְּדִתְאָאin the grassדִּיwhichבָרָאof the fieldוּבְטַלand with the dew ofשְׁמַיָּאheavensיִצְטַבַּעlet it become wetוְעִם־חֵיוַתand with the animals ofבָּרָאof the fieldחֲלָקֵהּits portionעַדuntilדִּי־שִׁבְעָהwhich sevenעִדָּנִיןtimesיַחְלְפוּןlet them passעֲלוֹהִי׃to him

    And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;

  21. 21

    דְּנָהthisפִשְׁרָאthe interpretationמַלְכָּאthe kingוּגְזֵרַתand is the decree of(עליא)[עִלָּאָה]the Most Highהִיאit isדִּיwhichמְטָתit has reachedעַל־מָרִאיupon my lordמַלְכָּא׃the king

    This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king:

  22. 22

    וְלָךְand youטָרְדִיןthey will be chasingמִן־אֲנָשָׁאfrom menוְעִם־חֵיוַתand with the animals ofבָּרָאof the fieldלֶהֱוֵהit will beמְדֹרָךְyour dwelling placeוְעִשְׂבָּאand grassכְתוֹרִיןlike oxenלָךְto youיְטַעֲמוּןthey will feedוּמִטַּלand away from the dew ofשְׁמַיָּאheavensלָךְto youמְצַבְּעִיןthey will be making wetוְשִׁבְעָהand sevenעִדָּנִיןtimesיַחְלְפוּןlet them pass(עליך)[עֲלָךְ]upon youעַדuntilדִּי־תִנְדַּעwhich you will knowדִּי־שַׁלִּיטwhich ruler(עליא)[עִלָּאָה]the Most Highבְּמַלְכוּתin the kingdom ofאֲנָשָׁאmenוּלְמַן־דִּיand to whomever whichיִצְבֵּאhe will be pleasedיִתְּנִנַּהּ׃he will give it

    That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

  23. 23

    וְדִיand whereasאֲמַרוּthey saidלְמִשְׁבַּקto leaveעִקַּרthe stump ofשׇׁרְשׁוֹהִיits rootsדִּיwhichאִילָנָאthe treeמַלְכוּתָךְyour kingdomלָךְto youקַיָּמָאis sureמִן־דִּיfrom whichתִנְדַּעyou will knowדִּיwhichשַׁלִּטִןare having masteryשְׁמַיָּא׃heavens

    And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.

  24. 24

    לָהֵןbutמַלְכָּאthe kingמִלְכִּיmy adviceיִשְׁפַּרlet it be acceptable(עליך)[עֲלָךְ]upon you[וַחֲטָאָךְ]and your sinsבְּצִדְקָהby right doingפְרֻקbreak offוַעֲוָיָתָךְand your iniquitiesבְּמִחַןby showing mercy toעֲנָיִןpoor peopleהֵןbeholdתֶּהֱוֵהit will beאַרְכָהa prolongingלִשְׁלֵוְתָךְ׃of your prosperity

    Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

    כֹּלָּאeverythingמְּטָאit cameעַל־נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרupon Nebuchadnezzarמַלְכָּא׃the king

    All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.

  26. 26

    לִקְצָתto the end ofיַרְחִיןmonthsתְּרֵי־עֲשַׂרtwelveעַל־הֵיכַלin the palace ofמַלְכוּתָאthe kingdomדִּיwhichבָבֶלBabylonמְהַלֵּךְwalking aboutהֲוָה׃was

    At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.

    עָנֵהwas replyingמַלְכָּאthe kingוְאָמַרand saidהֲלָאis it notדָא־הִיאis this it isבָּבֶלBabylonרַבְּתָאgreatדִּי־אֲנָהwhich IבֱנַיְתַהּI built itלְבֵיתto the house ofמַלְכוּkingdomבִּתְקָףwith such forceחִסְנִיmy powerוְלִיקָרand for the honor ofהַדְרִי׃my majesty

    The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?

  28. 28

    עוֹדany moreמִלְּתָאthe wordבְּפֻםin the mouth ofמַלְכָּאthe kingקָלthe sound ofמִן־שְׁמַיָּאfrom heavensנְפַלfellלָךְto youאָמְרִיןthey were sayingנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרNebuchadnezzarמַלְכָּאthe kingמַלְכוּתָאthe kingdomעֲדָתit had touchedמִנָּךְ׃from you

    While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.

    וּמִן־אֲנָשָׁאand from menלָךְto youטָרְדִיןthey will be chasingוְעִם־חֵיוַתand with the animals ofבָּרָאof the fieldמְדֹרָךְyour dwelling placeעִשְׂבָּאgrassכְתוֹרִיןlike oxenלָךְto youיְטַעֲמוּןthey will feedוְשִׁבְעָהand sevenעִדָּנִיןtimesיַחְלְפוּןlet them pass(עליך)[עֲלָךְ]upon youעַדuntilדִּי־תִנְדַּעwhich you will knowדִּי־שַׁלִּיטwhich ruler(עליא)[עִלָּאָה]the Most Highבְּמַלְכוּתin the kingdom ofאֲנָשָׁאmenוּלְמַן־דִּיand to whomever whichיִצְבֵּאhe will be pleasedיִתְּנִנַּהּ׃he will give it

    בַּהּ־שַׁעֲתָאat that momentמִלְּתָאthe wordסָפַתit was fulfilledעַל־נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרupon Nebuchadnezzarוּמִן־אֲנָשָׁאand from menטְרִידhe was chasedוְעִשְׂבָּאand grassכְתוֹרִיןlike oxenיֵאכֻלhe ateוּמִטַּלand away from the dew ofשְׁמַיָּאheavensגִּשְׁמֵהּhis bodyיִצְטַבַּעlet it become wetעַדuntilדִּיwhichשַׂעְרֵהּhis hairכְּנִשְׁרִיןlike eaglesרְבָהit grew greatוְטִפְרוֹהִיand his nailsכְצִפְּרִין׃were like birds

    The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.

    וְלִקְצָתand to the end ofיוֹמַיָּאthe daysאֲנָהIנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרNebuchadnezzarעַיְנַיmy eyeלִשְׁמַיָּאto the heavensנִטְלֵתI liftedוּמַנְדְּעִיand my understandingעֲלַיon meיְתוּבit returned[וּלְעִלָּאָה]and the Most HighבָּרְכֵתI blessedוּלְחַיand the one living ofעָלְמָאantiquityשַׁבְּחֵתI praisedוְהַדְּרֵתand I glorifiedדִּיwhichשׇׁלְטָנֵהּhis dominionשׇׁלְטָןdominionעָלַםperpetuityוּמַלְכוּתֵהּand his kingdomעִם־דָּרwith generationוְדָר׃and generation

    And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:

  32. 32

    וְכׇל־[דָּיְרֵי]and all the inhabitants ofאַרְעָאthe earthכְּלָהas nothingחֲשִׁיבִיןconsideredוּכְמִצְבְּיֵהּand as pleases heעָבֵדdoingבְּחֵילin the host ofשְׁמַיָּאheavens[וְדָיְרֵי]and the inhabitants ofאַרְעָאthe earthוְלָאand notאִיתַיthere isדִּי־יְמַחֵאwhich he will strikeבִידֵהּon his handוְיֵאמַרso he may sayלֵהּto himמָהwhatעֲבַדְתְּ׃have you done

    And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

    בֵּהּ־זִמְנָאat that timeמַנְדְּעִיmy understandingיְתוּבit returnedעֲלַיon meוְלִיקַרand to the honor ofמַלְכוּתִיmy kingdomהַדְרִיmy majestyוְזִיוִיand my brightnessיְתוּבit returnedעֲלַיon meוְלִיand to meהַדָּבְרַיmy counselorsוְרַבְרְבָנַיand my noblesיְבַעוֹןthey soughtוְעַל־מַלְכוּתִיand upon my kingdomהׇתְקְנַתit was establishedוּרְבוּand multiplyיַתִּירָהsurpassingהוּסְפַתit was addedלִי׃to me

    At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.

    כְּעַןnowאֲנָהIנְבֻכַדְנֶצַּרNebuchadnezzarמְשַׁבַּחam praisingוּמְרוֹמֵםand extolוּמְהַדַּרand am glorifyingלְמֶלֶךְthe Kingשְׁמַיָּאheavensדִּיwhichכׇל־מַעֲבָדוֹהִיall his deedsקְשֹׁטtruthוְאֹרְחָתֵהּand his waysדִּיןcauseוְדִיand those whoמַהְלְכִיןthey are walkingבְּגֵוָהin prideיָכִלis being ableלְהַשְׁפָּלָה׃to bring low

    Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
