    I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace:

    I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

    וּמִנִּיu/min/NIand from meשִׂיםsimwas madeטְעֵםte/EMa decreeלְהַנְעָלָהle/han/a/LAto bring inקׇדָמַיko/da/MAYbefore meלְכֹלle/KHOLallחַכִּימֵיchak/ki/MEthe wise men ofבָבֶלVa/VELBabylonדִּי־פְשַׁרdi-fe/SHARthat the interpretation ofחֶלְמָאchel/MAthe dreamיְהוֹדְעֻנַּנִי׃ye/hod/un/NA/nithey might make known to me

    Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream.

    Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.

    But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying,

    O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.

    וְחֶזְוֵיve/chez/VEand the visions ofרֵאשִׁיre/SHImy headעַל־מִשְׁכְּבִיal-mish/ke/VIon my bedחָזֵהcha/ZEseeingהֲוֵיתha/VETI wasוַאֲלוּva/a/LUand beholdאִילָןi/LANa treeבְּגוֹאbe/GOin the midst ofאַרְעָאar/Athe earthוְרוּמֵהּve/ru/MEand its heightשַׂגִּיא׃sag/GIgreat

    Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.

    The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:

    עׇפְיֵהּof/YEits leavesשַׁפִּירshap/PIRbeautifulוְאִנְבֵּהּve/in/BEand its fruitשַׂגִּיאsag/GIabundantוּמָזוֹןu/ma/ZONand foodלְכֹלָּא־בֵהּle/KHOL/la-vefor all was in itתְּחֹתוֹהִיte/cho/TO/hiunder itתַּטְלֵלtat/LELfound shadeחֵיוַתche/VATthe beasts ofבָּרָאba/RAthe fieldוּבְעַנְפוֹהִיu/ve/an/FO/hiand in its branches[יְדוּרָן]ye/du/RANdweltצִפְּרֵיtsip/pe/REthe birds ofשְׁמַיָּאshe/may/YAheavenוּמִנֵּהּu/min/NEand from itיִתְּזִיןyit/te/ZINwas fedכׇּל־בִּשְׂרָא׃kol-bis/RAall flesh

    The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it.

    I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven;

    קָרֵאka/REcalledבְחַיִלve/CHA/yilaloudוְכֵןve/KHENand thusאָמַרa/MARsaidגֹּדּוּGOD/ducut downאִילָנָאi/la/NAthe treeוְקַצִּצוּve/kats/TSI/tsuand cut offעַנְפוֹהִיan/FO/hiits branchesאַתַּרוּat/TA/rustrip offעׇפְיֵהּof/YEits leavesוּבַדַּרוּu/vad/DA/ruand scatterאִנְבֵּהּin/BEits fruitתְּנֻדte/NUDlet fleeחֵיוְתָאche/ve/TAthe beastsמִן־תַּחְתּוֹהִיmin-tach/TO/hifrom under itוְצִפְּרַיָּאve/tsip/pe/ray/YAand the birdsמִן־עַנְפוֹהִי׃min-an/FO/hifrom its branches

    He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches:

    בְּרַםbe/RAMbutעִקַּרik/KARthe stump ofשׇׁרְשׁוֹהִיshor/sho/HIits rootsבְּאַרְעָאbe/ar/Ain the groundשְׁבֻקוּshe/VU/kuleaveוּבֶאֱסוּרu/ve/e/SURand with a fetterדִּי־פַרְזֶלdi-far/ZELof ironוּנְחָשׁu/ne/CHASHand bronzeבְּדִתְאָאbe/dit/Ain the grassדִּיdiofבָרָאva/RAthe fieldוּבְטַלu/ve/TALand with the dew ofשְׁמַיָּאshe/may/YAheavenיִצְטַבַּעyits/tab/BAlet him be wetוְעִם־חֵיוְתָאve/IM-che/ve/TAand with the beastsחֲלָקֵהּcha/la/KElet his portion beבַּעֲשַׂבba/a/SAVin the grass ofאַרְעָא׃ar/Athe earth

    Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:

    לִבְבֵהּliv/VEhis heartמִן־[אֲנָשָׁא]min-a/na/SHAfrom a man’sיְשַׁנּוֹןye/shan/NONlet be changedוּלְבַבu/le/VAVand the heart ofחֵיוָהche/VAa beastיִתְיְהִבyit/ye/HIVbe givenלֵהּleto himוְשִׁבְעָהve/shiv/Aand sevenעִדָּנִיןid/da/NINtimesיַחְלְפוּןyach/le/FUNpassעֲלוֹהִי׃a/LO/hiover him

    Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.

    בִּגְזֵרַתbig/ze/RATby the decree ofעִירִיןi/RINthe watchersפִּתְגָמָאpit/ga/MAis the matterוּמֵאמַרu/me/MARand by the word ofקַדִּישִׁיןkad/di/SHINthe holy onesשְׁאֵלְתָאshe/el/TAthe demandעַד־דִּבְרַתad-div/RATto the intentדִּיdithatיִנְדְּעוּןyin/de/UNmay knowחַיַּיָּאchay/yay/YAthe livingדִּי־שַׁלִּיטdi-shal/LITthat rules(עליא)lay[עִלָּאָה]Il/la/Athe Most Highבְּמַלְכוּתbe/mal/KHUTin the kingdom of[אֲנָשָׁא]a/na/SHAmenוּלְמַן־דִּיu/le/MAN-diand to whomeverיִצְבֵּאyits/BEHe willsיִתְּנִנַּהּyit/te/nin/NAHe gives itוּשְׁפַלu/she/FALand the lowest ofאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenיְקִיםye/KIMHe sets up(עליה)layah[עֲלַהּ]׃a/LAover it

    This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

    This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.

    אֱדַיִןe/DA/yinthenדָּנִיֵּאלDa/niy/YELDanielדִּי־שְׁמֵהּdi-she/MEwhose name wasבֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּרBel/te/sha/TSARBelteshazzarאֶשְׁתּוֹמַםesh/to/MAMhe was appalledכְּשָׁעָהke/sha/Afor an hourחֲדָהcha/DAoneוְרַעְיֹנֹהִיve/ra/yo/NO/hiand his thoughtsיְבַהֲלֻנֵּהּye/va/ha/lun/NEterrified himעָנֵהa/NEansweredמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe kingוְאָמַרve/a/MARand saidבֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּרBel/te/sha/TSARBelteshazzarחֶלְמָאchel/MAthe dreamוּפִשְׁרֵאu/fish/REand its interpretationאַל־יְבַהֲלָךְal-ye/va/ha/LAKHlet not terrify youעָנֵהa/NEansweredבֵלְטְשַׁאצַּרVel/te/sha/TSARBelteshazzarוְאָמַרve/a/MARand saidמָרִאיma/RIYmy lordחֶלְמָאchel/MAthe dream[לְשָׂנְאָךְ]le/sa/ne/AKHbe for those who hate youוּפִשְׁרֵהּu/fish/REand its interpretation[לְעָרָךְ]׃le/a/RAKHfor your enemies

    Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.

    אִילָנָאi/la/NAthe treeדִּיdithatחֲזַיְתָcha/ZAY/tayou sawדִּיdithatרְבָהre/VAgrewוּתְקִףu/te/KIFand became strongוְרוּמֵהּve/ru/MEand its heightיִמְטֵאyim/TEreachedלִשְׁמַיָּאlish/may/YAto heavenוַחֲזוֹתֵהּva/cha/zo/TEand its sightלְכׇל־אַרְעָא׃le/KHOL-ar/Ato all the earth

    The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;

    וְעׇפְיֵהּve/of/YEand its leavesשַׁפִּירshap/PIRbeautifulוְאִנְבֵּהּve/in/BEand its fruitשַׂגִּיאsag/GIabundantוּמָזוֹןu/ma/ZONand foodלְכֹלָּא־בֵהּle/KHOL/la-vefor all was in itתְּחֹתוֹהִיte/cho/TO/hiunder itתְּדוּרte/DURit dweltחֵיוַתche/VATthe beasts ofבָּרָאba/RAthe fieldוּבְעַנְפוֹהִיu/ve/an/FO/hiand in its branchesיִשְׁכְּנָןyish/ke/NANthey dweltצִפְּרֵיtsip/pe/REthe birds ofשְׁמַיָּא׃she/may/YAheaven

    Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation:

    (אנתה)natah[אַנְתְּ־]הוּאant-huit is youמַלְכָּאmal/KAO kingדִּיdiwho(רבית)ravayat[רְבַת]re/VAThave grownוּתְקֵפְתְּu/te/KEFTand become strongוּרְבוּתָךְu/re/vu/TAKHand your greatnessרְבָתre/VAThas grownוּמְטָתu/me/TATand reachedלִשְׁמַיָּאlish/may/YAto heavenוְשׇׁלְטָנָךְve/shol/ta/NAKHand your dominionלְסוֹףle/SOFto the end ofאַרְעָא׃ar/Athe earth

    It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

    And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;

    This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king:

    וְלָךְve/LAKHand youטָרְדִיןta/re/DINthey will driveמִן־אֲנָשָׁאmin-a/na/SHAfrom menוְעִם־חֵיוַתve/IM-che/VATand with the beasts ofבָּרָאba/RAthe fieldלֶהֱוֵהle/he/VEwill beמְדֹרָךְme/do/RAKHyour dwellingוְעִשְׂבָּאve/is/BAand grassכְתוֹרִיןkhe/to/RINlike oxenלָךְlakhyouיְטַעֲמוּןye/ta/a/MUNthey will make eatוּמִטַּלu/mit/TALand with the dew ofשְׁמַיָּאshe/may/YAheavenלָךְlakhyouמְצַבְּעִיןme/tsab/be/INthey will wetוְשִׁבְעָהve/shiv/Aand sevenעִדָּנִיןid/da/NINtimesיַחְלְפוּןyach/le/FUNpass(עליך)layakh[עֲלָךְ]a/LAKHover youעַדaduntilדִּי־תִנְדַּעdi-tin/DAyou knowדִּי־שַׁלִּיטdi-shal/LITthat rules(עליא)lay[עִלָּאָה]Il/la/Athe Most Highבְּמַלְכוּתbe/mal/KHUTin the kingdom ofאֲנָשָׁאa/na/SHAmenוּלְמַן־דִּיu/le/MAN-diand to whomeverיִצְבֵּאyits/BEHe willsיִתְּנִנַּהּ׃yit/te/nin/NAHe gives it

    That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

    וְדִיve/DIand asאֲמַרוּa/MA/ruthey saidלְמִשְׁבַּקle/mish/BAKto leaveעִקַּרik/KARthe stump ofשׇׁרְשׁוֹהִיshor/sho/HIits rootsדִּיdiofאִילָנָאi/la/NAthe treeמַלְכוּתָךְmal/khu/TAKHyour kingdomלָךְlakhto youקַיָּמָאkay/ya/MAwill be sureמִן־דִּיmin-diafterתִנְדַּעtin/DAyou will knowדִּיdithatשַׁלִּטִןshal/li/TINruleשְׁמַיָּא׃She/may/YAHeaven

    And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.

    לָהֵןla/HENthereforeמַלְכָּאmal/KAO kingמִלְכִּיmil/KImy counselיִשְׁפַּרyish/PARlet be pleasing(עליך)layakh[עֲלָךְ]a/LAKHto you[וַחֲטָאָךְ]va/cha/ta/AKHand your sinsבְּצִדְקָהbe/tsid/KAby righteousnessפְרֻקfe/RUKbreak offוַעֲוָיָתָךְva/a/va/ya/TAKHand your iniquitiesבְּמִחַןbe/mi/CHANby showing mercyעֲנָיִןa/NA/yinto the poorהֵןhenifתֶּהֱוֵהte/he/VEthere may beאַרְכָהar/KHAa lengtheningלִשְׁלֵוְתָךְ׃lish/lev/TAKHof your ease

    Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

    All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.

    לִקְצָתlik/TSATat the end ofיַרְחִיןyar/CHINmonthsתְּרֵי־עֲשַׂרte/RE-a/SARtwelveעַל־הֵיכַלal-he/KHALon the palace ofמַלְכוּתָאmal/khu/TAthe kingdomדִּיdiofבָבֶלVa/VELBabylonמְהַלֵּךְme/hal/LEKHwalkingהֲוָה׃ha/VAhe was

    At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.

    עָנֵהa/NEspokeמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe kingוְאָמַרve/a/MARand saidהֲלָאha/LAis notדָא־הִיאda-hithisבָּבֶלBa/VELBabylonרַבְּתָאrab/be/TAthe greatדִּי־אֲנָהdi-a/NAthat Iבֱנַיְתַהּve/nay/TAhave builtלְבֵיתle/VETfor the house ofמַלְכוּmal/KHUthe kingdomבִּתְקָףbit/KAFby the might ofחִסְנִיchis/NImy powerוְלִיקָרve/li/KARand for the glory ofהַדְרִי׃had/RImy majesty

    The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?

    עוֹדodyetמִלְּתָאmil/le/TAthe word wasבְּפֻםbe/FUMin the mouth ofמַלְכָּאmal/KAO kingקָלkala voiceמִן־שְׁמַיָּאmin-she/may/YAfrom heavenנְפַלne/FALfellלָךְlakhto youאָמְרִיןa/me/RINit is saidנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרNe/vu/khad/nets/TSARNebuchadnezzarמַלְכָּאmal/KAthe kingמַלְכוּתָאmal/khu/TAthe kingdomעֲדָתa/DAThas departedמִנָּךְ׃min/NAKHfrom you

    While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.

    וּמִן־אֲנָשָׁאu/MIN-a/na/SHAand from menלָךְlakhyouטָרְדִיןta/re/DINthey will driveוְעִם־חֵיוַתve/IM-che/VATand with the beasts ofבָּרָאba/RAthe fieldמְדֹרָךְme/do/RAKHyour dwellingעִשְׂבָּאis/BAgrassכְתוֹרִיןkhe/to/RINlike oxenלָךְlakhyouיְטַעֲמוּןye/ta/a/MUNthey will make eatוְשִׁבְעָהve/shiv/Aand sevenעִדָּנִיןid/da/NINtimesיַחְלְפוּןyach/le/FUNpass(עליך)layakh[עֲלָךְ]a/LAKHover youעַדaduntilדִּי־תִנְדַּעdi-tin/DAyou knowדִּי־שַׁלִּיטdi-shal/LITthat rules(עליא)lay[עִלָּאָה]Il/la/Athe Most Highבְּמַלְכוּתbe/mal/KHUTin the kingdom ofאֲנָשָׁאa/na/SHAmenוּלְמַן־דִּיu/le/MAN-diand to whomeverיִצְבֵּאyits/BEHe willsיִתְּנִנַּהּ׃yit/te/nin/NAHe gives it

    And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

    בַּהּ־שַׁעֲתָאba-sha/a/TAin that hourמִלְּתָאmil/le/TAthe wordסָפַתSA/fatwas fulfilledעַל־נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרal-Ne/vu/khad/nets/TSARupon Nebuchadnezzarוּמִן־אֲנָשָׁאu/MIN-a/na/SHAand from menטְרִידte/RIDhe was drivenוְעִשְׂבָּאve/is/BAand grassכְתוֹרִיןkhe/to/RINlike oxenיֵאכֻלye/KHULhe ateוּמִטַּלu/mit/TALand with the dew ofשְׁמַיָּאshe/may/YAheavenגִּשְׁמֵהּgish/MEhis bodyיִצְטַבַּעyits/tab/BAwas wetעַדaduntilדִּיdithatשַׂעְרֵהּsa/REhis hairכְּנִשְׁרִיןke/nish/RINlike eagles’רְבָהre/VAgrewוְטִפְרוֹהִיve/tif/RO/hiand his nailsכְצִפְּרִין׃khe/tsip/pe/RINlike birds’

    The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.

    וְלִקְצָתve/lik/TSATand at the end ofיוֹמַיָּאyo/may/YAthe daysאֲנָהa/NAIנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרNe/vu/khad/nets/TSARNebuchadnezzarעַיְנַיay/NAYmy eyesלִשְׁמַיָּאlish/may/YAto heavenנִטְלֵתnit/LETlifted upוּמַנְדְּעִיu/man/de/Iand my understandingעֲלַיa/LAYto meיְתוּבye/TUVreturned[וּלְעִלָּאָה]U/le/il/la/Aand the Most Highבָּרְכֵתba/re/KHETI blessedוּלְחַיu/Le/CHAYand the One who livesעָלְמָאa/le/MAforeverשַׁבְּחֵתshab/be/CHETI praisedוְהַדְּרֵתve/had/de/RETand honoredדִּיdiwhoseשׇׁלְטָנֵהּshol/ta/NEdominionשׇׁלְטָןshol/TANis a dominion ofעָלַםa/LAMeternityוּמַלְכוּתֵהּu/mal/khu/TEand His kingdomעִם־דָּרim-daris with generationוְדָר׃ve/DARand generation

    And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:

    וְכׇל־[דָּיְרֵי]ve/KHOL-da/ye/REand all the inhabitants ofאַרְעָאar/Athe earthכְּלָהke/LAas nothingחֲשִׁיבִיןcha/shi/VINare reckonedוּכְמִצְבְּיֵהּu/khe/mits/be/YEand according to His willעָבֵדa/VEDHe doesבְּחֵילbe/CHELin the host ofשְׁמַיָּאshe/may/YAheaven[וְדָיְרֵי]ve/da/ye/REand the inhabitants ofאַרְעָאar/Athe earthוְלָאve/LAand notאִיתַיi/TAYthere isדִּי־יְמַחֵאdi-ye/ma/CHEwho can stayבִידֵהּvi/DEHis handוְיֵאמַרve/YE/maror sayלֵהּleto Himמָהmawhatעֲבַדְתְּ׃a/VADThave you done

    And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

  33. 33

    בֵּהּ־זִמְנָאbe-zim/NAat that timeמַנְדְּעִיman/de/Imy understandingיְתוּבye/TUVreturnedעֲלַיa/LAYto meוְלִיקַרve/li/KARand for the glory ofמַלְכוּתִיmal/khu/TImy kingdomהַדְרִיhad/RImy majestyוְזִיוִיve/zi/VIand my brightnessיְתוּבye/TUVreturnedעֲלַיa/LAYto meוְלִיve/LIand meהַדָּבְרַיhad/da/ve/RAYmy counselorsוְרַבְרְבָנַיve/rav/re/va/NAYand my noblesיְבַעוֹןye/va/ONsoughtוְעַל־מַלְכוּתִיve/AL-mal/khu/TIand in my kingdomהׇתְקְנַתhot/ke/NATI was establishedוּרְבוּu/re/VUand greatnessיַתִּירָהyat/ti/RAexceedingהוּסְפַתHUS/fatit was addedלִי׃lito me

    At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.

  34. 34

    כְּעַןke/ANnowאֲנָהa/NAIנְבֻכַדְנֶצַּרNe/vu/khad/nets/TSARNebuchadnezzarמְשַׁבַּחme/shab/BACHpraiseוּמְרוֹמֵםu/me/ro/MEMand extolוּמְהַדַּרu/me/had/DARand honorלְמֶלֶךְle/ME/lekhthe King ofשְׁמַיָּאshe/may/YAheavenדִּיdiforכׇל־מַעֲבָדוֹהִיkhol-ma/a/va/DO/hiall his deedsקְשֹׁטke/SHOTare truthוְאֹרְחָתֵהּve/or/cha/TEand His waysדִּיןdinjusticeוְדִיve/DIand those whoמַהְלְכִיןmah/le/KHINwalkבְּגֵוָהbe/ge/VAin prideיָכִלya/KHILHe is ableלְהַשְׁפָּלָה׃le/hash/pa/LAto humble

    Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
