   And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

   And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David's wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

   And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.

   And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ish-bosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father's concubine?

   Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?

   So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him;

    לְהַעֲבִירle/ha/a/VIRto transferהַמַּמְלָכָהham/mam/la/KHAthe kingdomמִבֵּיתmib/BETfrom the house ofשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulוּלְהָקִיםu/le/ha/KIMand to establishאֶת־כִּסֵּאet-kis/SEthe throne ofדָוִדDa/VIDDavidעַל־יִשְׂרָאֵלal-Yis/ra/ELover Israelוְעַל־יְהוּדָהve/AL-ye/hu/DAand over Judahמִדָּןmid/DANfrom Danוְעַד־בְּאֵרve/AD-be/ERand to Beer-שָׁבַע׃SHA/vasheba

    To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba.

    וְלֹא־יָכֹלve/LO-ya/KHOLand could notעוֹדodagainלְהָשִׁיבle/ha/SHIVto answerאֶת־אַבְנֵרet-Av/NERAbnerדָּבָרda/VARa wordמִיִּרְאָתוֹmiy/yir/a/TObecause he fearedאֹתוֹ׃o/TOhim

    And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him.

12. 12

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerמַלְאָכִיםmal/a/KHIMmessengersאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto Davidתַּחְתָּוtach/TAVin his placeלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingלְמִי־אָרֶץle/MI-A/retswhose is the landלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingכׇּרְתָהkor/TAmakeבְרִיתְךָve/ri/te/KHAyour covenantאִתִּיit/TIwith meוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdיָדִיya/DImy handעִמָּךְim/MAKHwith youלְהָסֵבle/ha/SEVto bring overאֵלֶיךָe/LE/khato youאֶת־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃et-Kol-yis/ra/ELall Israel

    And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.

    And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul's daughter, when thou comest to see my face.

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidמַלְאָכִיםmal/a/KHIMmessengersאֶל־אִישׁ־בֹּשֶׁתel-Ish-BO/shetto Ish-boshethבֶּן־שָׁאוּלben-Sha/ULthe son of Saulלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingתְּנָהte/NAgiveאֶת־אִשְׁתִּיet-ish/TImy wifeאֶת־מִיכַלet-Mi/KHALMichalאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomאֵרַשְׂתִּיe/RAS/tiI betrothedלִיlito meבְּמֵאָהbe/me/Afor a hundredעׇרְלוֹתor/LOTforeskins ofפְּלִשְׁתִּים׃Pe/lish/TIMthe Philistines

    And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

15. 15

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentאִישׁIshIsh-בֹּשֶׁתBO/shetboshethוַיִּקָּחֶהָvay/yik/ka/CHE/haand took herמֵעִםme/IMfromאִישׁisha husbandמֵעִםme/IMfromפַּלְטִיאֵלPal/ti/ELPaltielבֶּן־[לָיִשׁ]ben-La/YISHthe son of Laish(לוש)׃lavash

    And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish.

16. 16

    וַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentאִתָּהּit/TAwith herאִישָׁהּi/SHAher husbandהָלוֹךְha/LOKHgoingוּבָכֹהu/va/KHOand weepingאַחֲרֶיהָa/cha/RE/habehind herעַד־בַּחֻרִיםad-Ba/chu/RIMas far as Bahurimוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerלֵךְlekhgoשׁוּבshuvreturnוַיָּשֹׁב׃vay/ya/SHOVand he returned

    And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.

17. 17

    וּדְבַר־אַבְנֵרu/De/VAR-av/NERand the word of Abnerהָיָהha/YAwasעִם־זִקְנֵיim-zik/NEwith the elders ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingגַּם־תְּמוֹלgam-te/MOLboth yesterdayגַּם־שִׁלְשֹׁםgam-shil/SHOMand the day beforeהֱיִיתֶםhe/yi/TEMyou have beenמְבַקְשִׁיםme/vak/SHIMseekingאֶת־דָּוִדet-Da/VIDDavidלְמֶלֶךְle/ME/lekhto be kingעֲלֵיכֶם׃a/le/KHEMover you

    And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you:

18. 18

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowעֲשׂוּa/SUdo itכִּיkiforיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאָמַרa/MARsaidאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDconcerning Davidלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingבְּיַדbe/YADby the hand ofדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidעַבְדִּיav/DIMy servantהוֹשִׁיעַho/SHI/ato saveאֶת־עַמִּיet-am/MIMy peopleיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelמִיַּדmiy/YADfrom the hand ofפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוּמִיַּדu/miy/YADand out of the hand ofכׇּל־אֹיְבֵיהֶם׃kol-oy/ve/HEMall their enemies

    Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.

19. 19

    וַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeגַּם־אַבְנֵרgam-Av/NERalso Abnerבְּאׇזְנֵיbe/oz/NEin the ears ofבִנְיָמִיןVin/ya/MINBenjaminוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentגַּם־אַבְנֵרgam-Av/NERalso Abnerלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto speakבְּאׇזְנֵיbe/oz/NEin the ears ofדָוִדDa/VIDDavidבְּחֶבְרוֹןbe/Chev/RONin Hebronאֵת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־טוֹבet-kol-a/SHER-tovall that was goodבְּעֵינֵיbe/e/NEin the eyes ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוּבְעֵינֵיu/ve/e/NEand in the eyes ofכׇּל־בֵּיתkol-betall the house ofבִּנְיָמִן׃Bin/ya/MINBenjamin

    And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto DavidחֶבְרוֹןChev/RONHebronוְאִתּוֹve/it/TOand with himעֶשְׂרִיםes/RIMtwentyאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenוַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand madeדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidלְאַבְנֵרle/Av/NERfor Abnerוְלַאֲנָשִׁיםve/la/a/na/SHIMand for the menאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹa/SHER-it/TOwho were with himמִשְׁתֶּה׃mish/TEa feast

    So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto Davidאָקוּמָהa/KU/maI will ariseוְאֵלֵכָהve/e/LE/khaand goוְאֶקְבְּצָהve/ek/be/TSAand will gatherאֶל־אֲדֹנִיel-a/do/NIto my lordהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֶת־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Kol-yis/ra/ELall Israelוְיִכְרְתוּve/yikh/re/TUthat they may makeאִתְּךָit/te/KHAwith youבְּרִיתbe/RITa covenantוּמָלַכְתָּu/ma/lakh/TAand you may reignבְּכֹלbe/KHOLover allאֲשֶׁר־תְּאַוֶּהa/SHER-te/av/VEthat desiresנַפְשֶׁךָnaf/SHE/khayour soulוַיְשַׁלַּחvay/shal/LACHand sent awayדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־אַבְנֵרet-Av/NERAbnerוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentבְּשָׁלוֹם׃be/sha/LOMin peace

    And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdעַבְדֵיav/DEthe servants ofדָוִדDa/VIDDavidוְיוֹאָבve/Yo/AVand Joabבָּאbacameמֵהַגְּדוּדme/hag/ge/DUDfrom the raidוְשָׁלָלve/sha/LALand spoilרָבravgreatעִמָּםim/MAMwith themהֵבִיאוּhe/VI/uthey brought inוְאַבְנֵרve/Av/NERand Abnerאֵינֶנּוּe/NEN/nuwas notעִם־דָּוִדim-Da/VIDwith Davidבְּחֶבְרוֹןbe/Chev/RONin Hebronכִּיkiforשִׁלְּחוֹshil/le/CHOhe had sent him awayוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentבְּשָׁלוֹם׃be/sha/LOMin peace

    And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

    When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.

    Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?

    And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.

    וַיָּשׇׁבvay/YA/shovand returnedאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerחֶבְרוֹןChev/RONHebronוַיַּטֵּהוּvay/yat/TE/huand took him asideיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabאֶל־תּוֹךְel-tokhinto the midst ofהַשַּׁעַרhash/SHA/arthe gateלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto speakאִתּוֹit/TOwith himבַּשֶּׁלִיbash/SHE/liquietlyוַיַּכֵּהוּvay/yak/KE/huand struck himשָׁםshamthereהַחֹמֶשׁha/CHO/meshin the bellyוַיָּמׇתvay/YA/motand he diedבְּדַםbe/DAMfor the blood ofעֲשָׂהאֵלA/sah/ELAsahelאָחִיו׃a/CHIVhis brother

    And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

    And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:

    Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.

    וְיוֹאָבve/Yo/AVand Joabוַאֲבִישַׁיva/A/vi/SHAYand Abishaiאָחִיוa/CHIVhis brotherהָרְגוּha/re/GUkilledלְאַבְנֵרLe/av/NERAbnerעַלalbecauseאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהֵמִיתhe/MIThe had killedאֶת־עֲשָׂהאֵלet-A/sah/ELAsahelאֲחִיהֶםa/chi/HEMtheir brotherבְּגִבְעוֹןbe/Giv/ONat Gibeonבַּמִּלְחָמָה׃bam/mil/cha/MAin the battle

    So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

31. 31

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־יוֹאָבel-Yo/AVto Joabוְאֶל־כׇּל־הָעָםve/EL-kol-ha/AMand to all the peopleאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹa/SHER-it/TOwho were with himקִרְעוּkir/Utearבִגְדֵיכֶםvig/de/KHEMyour garmentsוְחִגְרוּve/chig/RUand gird yourselvesשַׂקִּיםsak/KIMwith sackclothוְסִפְדוּve/sif/DUand mournלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerוְהַמֶּלֶךְve/ham/ME/lekhand the kingדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidהֹלֵךְho/LEKHwalkingאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהַמִּטָּה׃ham/mit/TAthe bier

    And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier.

32. 32

    וַיִּקְבְּרוּvay/yik/be/RUand they buriedאֶת־אַבְנֵרet-Av/NERAbnerבְּחֶבְרוֹןbe/Chev/RONin Hebronוַיִּשָּׂאvay/yis/SAand lifted upהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֶת־קוֹלוֹet-ko/LOhis voiceוַיֵּבְךְּvay/YEVKand he weptאֶל־קֶבֶרel-KE/verat the grave ofאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerוַיִּבְכּוּvay/yiv/KUand they weptכׇּל־הָעָם׃kol-ha/AMall the people

    And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.

33. 33

    וַיְקֹנֵןvay/ko/NENand lamentedהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֶל־אַבְנֵרel-Av/NERover Abnerוַיֹּאמַרvay/yo/MARand saidהַכְּמוֹתhak/ke/MOTas the death ofנָבָלna/VALa foolיָמוּתya/MUTshould dieאַבְנֵר׃Av/NERAbner

    And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth?

34. 34

    יָדֶךָya/DE/khayour handsלֹא־אֲסֻרוֹתlo-a/su/ROTwere not boundוְרַגְלֶיךָve/rag/LE/khaand your feetלֹא־לִנְחֻשְׁתַּיִםlo-lin/chush/TA/yimnot into fettersהֻגָּשׁוּhug/GA/shuwere broughtכִּנְפוֹלkin/FOLas one fallsלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeבְנֵי־עַוְלָהve/NE-av/LAsons of wickednessנָפָלְתָּna/FAL/tayou fellוַיֹּסִפוּvay/yo/SI/fuand addedכׇל־הָעָםkhol-ha/AMall the peopleלִבְכּוֹתliv/KOTto weepעָלָיו׃a/LAYVover him

    Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him.

35. 35

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameכׇל־הָעָםkhol-ha/AMall the peopleלְהַבְרוֹתle/hav/ROTto cause to eatאֶת־דָּוִדet-Da/VIDDavidלֶחֶםLE/chembreadבְּעוֹדbe/ODwhile yetהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayוַיִּשָּׁבַעvay/yish/sha/VAand sworeדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingכֹּהkosoיַעֲשֶׂה־לִּיya/a/SE-limay do to meאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodוְכֹהve/KHOand moreיֹסִיףyo/SIFalsoכִּיkithatאִם־לִפְנֵיim-lif/NEif beforeבוֹא־הַשֶּׁמֶשׁvo-hash/SHE/meshthe sun goes downאֶטְעַם־לֶחֶםet/AM-LE/chemI taste breadאוֹoorכׇל־מְאוּמָה׃khol-me/U/maanything at all

    And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.

36. 36

    וְכׇל־הָעָםve/KHOL-ha/AMand all the peopleהִכִּירוּhik/KI/rutook noticeוַיִּיטַבvay/yi/TAVand it pleasedבְּעֵינֵיהֶםbe/e/ne/HEMin their eyesכְּכֹלke/KHOLas everythingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatעָשָׂהa/SAdidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingבְּעֵינֵיbe/e/NEin the eyes ofכׇל־הָעָםkhol-ha/AMall the peopleטוֹב׃tovwas good

    And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.

37. 37

    וַיֵּדְעוּvay/yed/Uand knewכׇל־הָעָםkhol-ha/AMall the peopleוְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/KHOL-yis/ra/ELand all Israelבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatכִּיkithatלֹאlonotהָיְתָהha/ye/TAwas itמֵהַמֶּלֶךְme/ham/ME/lekhfrom the kingלְהָמִיתle/ha/MITto killאֶת־אַבְנֵרet-Av/NERAbnerבֶּן־נֵר׃ben-Nerthe son of Ner

    For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.

38. 38

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֶל־עֲבָדָיוel-a/va/DAYVto his servantsהֲלוֹאha/LOdo notתֵדְעוּted/Uyou knowכִּי־שַׂרki-sarthat a princeוְגָדוֹלve/ga/DOLand a great manנָפַלna/FALhas fallenהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃be/Yis/ra/ELin Israel

    And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?

39. 39

    וְאָנֹכִיve/a/no/KHIand Iהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayרַךְrakhweakוּמָשׁוּחַu/ma/SHU/achthough anointedמֶלֶךְME/lekhkingוְהָאֲנָשִׁיםve/ha/a/na/SHIMand the menהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseבְּנֵיbe/NEthe sons ofצְרוּיָהTse/ru/YAZeruiahקָשִׁיםka/SHIMare harderמִמֶּנִּיmim/MEN/nithan Iיְשַׁלֵּםye/shal/LEMmay repayיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDלְעֹשֵׂהle/o/SEthe doer ofהָרָעָהha/ra/Aevilכְּרָעָתוֹ׃ke/ra/a/TOaccording to his wickedness

    And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.
