   And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.

   So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite.

   And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

   And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.

   And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.

   And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.

   וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowתֶּחֱזַקְנָהte/che/ZAK/nalet be strongיְדֵיכֶםye/de/KHEMyour handsוִהְיוּvih/YUand beלִבְנֵי־חַיִלliv/NE-CHA/yilvaliant menכִּי־מֵתki-metfor is deadאֲדֹנֵיכֶםa/do/ne/KHEMyour lordשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulוְגַם־אֹתִיve/GAM-o/TIand also meמָשְׁחוּma/she/CHUhave anointedבֵית־יְהוּדָהvet-Ye/hu/DAthe house of Judahלְמֶלֶךְle/ME/lekhkingעֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMover them

   Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

   וְאַבְנֵרve/Av/NERand Abnerבֶּן־נֵרben-Nerthe son of Nerשַׂר־צָבָאsar-tsa/VAthe commander of the armyאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasלְשָׁאוּלle/Sha/ULof Saulלָקַחla/KACHtookאֶת־אִישׁet-IshIsh-בֹּשֶׁתBO/shetboshethבֶּן־שָׁאוּלben-Sha/ULthe son of Saulוַיַּעֲבִרֵהוּvay/ya/a/vi/RE/huand brought him overמַחֲנָיִם׃Ma/cha/NA/yimto Mahanaim

   But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

   וַיַּמְלִכֵהוּvay/yam/li/KHE/huand made him kingאֶל־הַגִּלְעָדel-Hag/gil/ADover Gileadוְאֶל־הָאֲשׁוּרִיve/EL-ha/a/shu/RIand over the Ashuritesוְאֶל־יִזְרְעֶאלve/EL-yiz/re/ELand over Jezreelוְעַל־אֶפְרַיִםve/AL-ef/RA/yimand over Ephraimוְעַל־בִּנְיָמִןve/AL-bin/ya/MINand over Benjaminוְעַל־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/AL-yis/ra/ELand over Israelכֻּלֹּה׃kul/LOall of it

   And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

    Ish-bosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand wereמִסְפַּרmis/PARthe number ofהַיָּמִיםhay/ya/MIMthe daysאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהָיָהha/YAwasדָוִדDa/VIDDavidמֶלֶךְME/lekhkingבְּחֶבְרוֹןbe/Chev/RONin Hebronעַל־בֵּיתal-betover the house ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahשֶׁבַעSHE/vasevenשָׁנִיםsha/NIMyearsוְשִׁשָּׁהve/shish/SHAand sixחֳדָשִׁים׃cho/da/SHIMmonths

    And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

    וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerבֶּן־נֵרben-Nerthe son of Nerוְעַבְדֵיve/av/DEand the servants ofאִישׁ־בֹּשֶׁתIsh-BO/shetIsh-boshethבֶּן־שָׁאוּלben-Sha/ULthe son of Saulמִמַּחֲנַיִםmim/Ma/cha/NA/yimfrom Mahanaimגִּבְעוֹנָה׃Giv/O/nato Gibeon

    And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

    וְיוֹאָבve/Yo/AVand Joabבֶּן־צְרוּיָהben-Tse/ru/YAthe son of Zeruiahוְעַבְדֵיve/av/DEand the servants ofדָוִדDa/VIDDavidיָצְאוּya/tse/Uwent outוַיִּפְגְּשׁוּםvay/yif/ge/SHUMand they met themעַל־בְּרֵכַתal-be/re/KHATby the pool ofגִּבְעוֹןGiv/ONGibeonיַחְדָּוyach/DAVtogetherוַיֵּשְׁבוּvay/yesh/VUand they sat downאֵלֶּהEL/letheseעַל־הַבְּרֵכָהal-hab/be/re/KHAby the poolמִזֶּהmiz/ZEon this sideוְאֵלֶּהve/EL/leand theseעַל־הַבְּרֵכָהal-hab/be/re/KHAby the poolמִזֶּה׃miz/ZEon that side

    And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerאֶל־יוֹאָבel-Yo/AVto Joabיָקוּמוּya/KU/mulet ariseנָאnaI prayהַנְּעָרִיםhan/ne/a/RIMthe young menוִישַׂחֲקוּvi/sa/cha/KUand playלְפָנֵינוּle/fa/NE/nubefore usוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabיָקֻמוּ׃ya/KU/mulet them arise

    And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

    וַיָּקֻמוּvay/ya/KU/muand they aroseוַיַּעַבְרוּvay/ya/av/RUand went overבְמִסְפָּרve/mis/PARby numberשְׁנֵים־עָשָׂרshe/NEM-a/SARtwelveלְבִנְיָמִןle/Vin/ya/MINof Benjaminוּלְאִישׁu/Le/ISHbelonging to Ish-בֹּשֶׁתBO/shetboshethבֶּן־שָׁאוּלben-Sha/ULthe son of Saulוּשְׁנֵים־עָשָׂרu/she/NEM-a/SARand twelveמֵעַבְדֵיme/av/DEof the servants ofדָוִד׃Da/VIDDavid

    Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

16. 16

    וַיַּחֲזִקוּvay/ya/cha/ZI/kuand they seizedאִישׁishevery oneבְּרֹאשׁbe/ROSHby the head ofרֵעֵהוּre/E/huhis fellowוְחַרְבּוֹve/char/BOand his swordבְּצַדbe/TSADin the side ofרֵעֵהוּre/E/huhis fellowוַיִּפְּלוּvay/yip/pe/LUand they fellיַחְדָּוyach/DAVtogetherוַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand one calledלַמָּקוֹםlam/ma/KOMthe placeהַהוּאha/HUthatחֶלְקַתChel/KATHelkath-הַצֻּרִיםhats/tsu/RIMhazzurimאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichבְּגִבְעוֹן׃be/Giv/ONat Gibeon

    And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

17. 17

    וַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand wasהַמִּלְחָמָהham/mil/cha/MAthe battleקָשָׁהka/SHAfierceעַד־מְאֹדad-me/ODveryבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatוַיִּנָּגֶףvay/yin/NA/gefand was beatenאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerוְאַנְשֵׁיve/an/SHEand the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeעַבְדֵיav/DEthe servants ofדָוִד׃Da/VIDDavid

    And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

18. 18

    וַיִּהְיוּ־שָׁםvay/yih/YU-shamand were thereשְׁלֹשָׁהshe/lo/SHAthreeבְּנֵיbe/NEthe sons ofצְרוּיָהTse/ru/YAZeruiahיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabוַאֲבִישַׁיva/A/vi/SHAYand Abishaiוַעֲשָׂהאֵלva/A/sah/ELand Asahelוַעֲשָׂהאֵלva/A/sah/ELand Asahelקַלkallightבְּרַגְלָיוbe/rag/LAYVof footכְּאַחַדke/a/CHADas one ofהַצְּבָיִםhats/tse/VA/yimthe gazellesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat areבַּשָּׂדֶה׃bas/sa/DEin the field

    And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.

19. 19

    וַיִּרְדֹּףvay/yir/DOFand pursuedעֲשָׂהאֵלA/sah/ELAsahelאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerוְלֹא־נָטָהve/LO-na/TAand he turned notלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto goעַל־הַיָּמִיןal-hay/ya/MINto the right handוְעַל־הַשְּׂמֹאולve/AL-has/se/MOLnor to the leftמֵאַחֲרֵיme/a/cha/REfrom afterאַבְנֵר׃Av/NERAbner

    And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

20. 20

    וַיִּפֶןvay/YI/fenand he turnedאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerאַחֲרָיוa/cha/RAYVbehind himוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַאַתָּהha/at/TAare youזֶהzethisעֲשָׂהאֵלA/sah/ELAsahelוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאָנֹכִי׃a/no/KHII am

    Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.

21. 21

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹloto himאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerנְטֵהne/TEturn asideלְךָle/KHAfor yourselfעַל־יְמִינְךָal-ye/mi/ne/KHAto your right handאוֹoorעַל־שְׂמֹאלֶךָal-se/mo/LE/khato your leftוֶאֱחֹזve/e/CHOZand lay holdלְךָle/KHAfor yourselfאֶחָדe/CHADoneמֵהַנְּעָרִיםme/han/ne/a/RIMof the young menוְקַח־לְךָve/KACH-le/KHAand take for yourselfאֶת־חֲלִצָתוֹet-cha/li/tsa/TOhis spoilוְלֹא־אָבָהve/LO-a/VAbut was not willingעֲשָׂהאֵלA/sah/ELAsahelלָסוּרla/SURto turn asideמֵאַחֲרָיו׃me/a/cha/RAYVfrom behind him

    And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.

    וַיֹּסֶףvay/YO/sefand addedעוֹדodagainאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאֶל־עֲשָׂהאֵלel-A/sah/ELto Asahelסוּרsurturn asideלְךָle/KHAfor yourselfמֵאַחֲרָיme/a/cha/RAYfrom after meלָמָּהLAM/mawhyאַכֶּכָּהak/KEK/kashould I strike youאַרְצָהAR/tsato the groundוְאֵיךְve/EKHand howאֶשָּׂאes/SAwould I liftפָנַיfa/NAYmy faceאֶל־יוֹאָבel-Yo/AVto Joabאָחִיךָ׃a/CHI/khayour brother

    And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?

    וַיְמָאֵןvay/ma/ENand he refusedלָסוּרla/SURto turn asideוַיַּכֵּהוּvay/yak/KE/huand struck himאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerבְּאַחֲרֵיbe/a/cha/REwith the butt end ofהַחֲנִיתha/cha/NITthe spearאֶל־הַחֹמֶשׁel-ha/CHO/meshin the bellyוַתֵּצֵאvat/te/TSEand came outהַחֲנִיתha/cha/NITthe spearמֵאַחֲרָיוme/a/cha/RAYVfrom behind himוַיִּפׇּל־שָׁםvay/yip/POL-shamand he fell thereוַיָּמׇתvay/YA/motand he diedתַּחְתָּוtach/TAVon the spotוַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passכׇּל־הַבָּאkol-hab/BAall that cameאֶל־הַמָּקוֹםel-ham/ma/KOMto the placeאֲשֶׁר־נָפַלa/SHER-NA/falwhere fellשָׁםshamthereעֲשָׂהאֵלA/sah/ELAsahelוַיָּמֹתvay/ya/MOTand diedוַיַּעֲמֹדוּ׃vay/ya/a/MO/dustood still

    Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

    וַיִּרְדְּפוּvay/yir/de/FUand pursuedיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabוַאֲבִישַׁיva/A/vi/SHAYand Abishaiאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerוְהַשֶּׁמֶשׁve/hash/SHE/meshand the sunבָּאָהba/Awent downוְהֵמָּהve/HEM/maand theyבָּאוּBA/ucameעַד־גִּבְעַתad-giv/ATto the hill ofאַמָּהAm/MAAmmahאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעַל־פְּנֵי־גִיחַal-Pe/NE-GI/achbefore GiahדֶּרֶךְDE/rekhby the way ofמִדְבַּרmid/BARthe wilderness ofגִּבְעוֹן׃Giv/ONGibeon

    Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

    וַיִּתְקַבְּצוּvay/yit/kab/be/TSUand gathered themselves togetherבְנֵי־בִנְיָמִןve/NE-vin/ya/MINthe children of Benjaminאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerוַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand they wereלַאֲגֻדָּהla/a/gud/DAinto a bandאֶחָתe/CHAToneוַיַּעַמְדוּvay/ya/am/DUand stoodעַלaluponרֹאשׁ־גִּבְעָהrosh-giv/Athe top of a hillאֶחָת׃e/CHATone

    And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.

26. 26

    וַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand calledאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerאֶל־יוֹאָבel-Yo/AVto Joabוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהֲלָנֶצַחha/la/NE/tsachshall for everתֹּאכַלto/KHALdevourחֶרֶבCHE/revthe swordהֲלוֹאha/LOdo notיָדַעְתָּהya/DA/tayou knowכִּי־מָרָהki-ma/RAthat bitternessתִהְיֶהtih/YEit will beבָּאַחֲרוֹנָהba/a/cha/ro/NAin the latter endוְעַד־מָתַיve/AD-ma/TAYhow longלֹא־תֹאמַרlo-to/MARwill you not tellלָעָםla/AMto the peopleלָשׁוּבla/SHUVto returnמֵאַחֲרֵיme/a/cha/REfrom afterאֲחֵיהֶם׃a/che/HEMtheir brothers

    Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabחַיchayas livesהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodכִּיkithatלוּלֵאlu/LEif notדִּבַּרְתָּdib/BAR/tayou had spokenכִּיkisurelyאָזazthenמֵהַבֹּקֶרme/hab/BO/kerfrom the morningנַעֲלָהna/a/LAwould have gone upהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאִישׁishevery oneמֵאַחֲרֵיme/a/cha/REfrom afterאָחִיו׃a/CHIVhis brother

    And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

28. 28

    וַיִּתְקַעvay/yit/KAand he blewיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabבַּשּׁוֹפָרbash/sho/FARthe trumpetוַיַּעַמְדוּvay/ya/am/DUand stoodכׇּל־הָעָםkol-ha/AMall the peopleוְלֹא־יִרְדְּפוּve/LO-yir/de/FUand pursued notעוֹדodany moreאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוְלֹא־יָסְפוּve/LO-ya/se/FUand they did not continueעוֹדodany moreלְהִלָּחֵם׃le/hil/la/CHEMto fight

    So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.

    And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.

    וְיוֹאָבve/Yo/AVand Joabשָׁבshavreturnedמֵאַחֲרֵיme/a/cha/REfrom afterאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerוַיִּקְבֹּץvay/yik/BOTSand he gatheredאֶת־כׇּל־הָעָםet-kol-ha/AMall the peopleוַיִּפָּקְדוּvay/yip/pa/ke/DUthere were missingמֵעַבְדֵיme/av/DEof the servants ofדָוִדDa/VIDDavidתִּשְׁעָה־עָשָׂרtish/A-a/SARnineteenאִישׁishmenוַעֲשָׂהאֵל׃va/A/sah/ELand Asahel

    And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel.

31. 31

    וְעַבְדֵיve/av/DEand the servants ofדָוִדDa/VIDDavidהִכּוּhik/KUhad struckמִבִּנְיָמִןmib/Bin/ya/MINof Benjaminוּבְאַנְשֵׁיu/ve/an/SHEand among the men ofאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerשְׁלֹשׁ־מֵאוֹתshe/LOSH-me/OTthree hundredוְשִׁשִּׁיםve/shish/SHIMand sixtyאִישׁishmenמֵתוּ׃ME/tudied

    But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.

    וַיִּשְׂאוּvay/yis/Uand they took upאֶת־עֲשָׂהאֵלet-A/sah/ELAsahelוַיִּקְבְּרֻהוּvay/yik/be/RU/huand buried himבְּקֶבֶרbe/KE/verin the tomb ofאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichבֵּיתBetBeth-לָחֶםLA/chemlehemוַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand wentכׇל־הַלַּיְלָהkhol-hal/LAY/laall the nightיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabוַאֲנָשָׁיוva/a/na/SHAYVand his menוַיֵּאֹרvay/ye/ORand it grew lightלָהֶםla/HEMto themבְּחֶבְרוֹן׃be/Chev/RONin Hebron

    And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
