   Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

   It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

   And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.

   And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

   And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?

   And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

   And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלִיlito meמִי־אָתָּהmi-AT/tawho are you(ויאמר)vaymar[וָאֹמַר]va/o/MARand I saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himעֲמָלֵקִיA/ma/le/KIan Amalekiteאָנֹכִי׃a/no/KHII

   And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

9. 9

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלַיe/LAYto meעֲמׇד־נָאa/MOD-nastand I prayעָלַיa/LAYupon meוּמֹתְתֵנִיu/mot/TE/niand kill meכִּיkiforאֲחָזַנִיa/cha/ZA/nihas seized meהַשָּׁבָץhash/sha/VATSthe agonyכִּי־כׇל־עוֹדki-khol-odfor all stillנַפְשִׁיnaf/SHImy lifeבִּי׃biin me

   He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.

    וָאֶעֱמֹדva/e/e/MODand I stoodעָלָיוa/LAYVupon himוַאֲמֹתְתֵהוּva/a/mot/TE/huand I killed himכִּיkibecauseיָדַעְתִּיya/DA/tiI knewכִּיkithatלֹאlonotיִחְיֶהyich/YEhe would liveאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterנִפְלוֹnif/LOhis fallingוָאֶקַּחva/ek/KACHand I tookהַנֵּזֶרhan/NE/zerthe crownאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעַל־רֹאשׁוֹal-ro/SHOupon his headוְאֶצְעָדָהve/ets/a/DAand the armletאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעַל־זְרֹעוֹal-ze/ro/Oupon his armוָאֲבִיאֵםva/a/vi/EMand I have brought themאֶל־אֲדֹנִיel-a/do/NIto my lordהֵנָּה׃HEN/nahere

    So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

    וַיַּחֲזֵקvay/ya/cha/ZEKand took holdדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidבִּבְגָדָוbiv/ga/DAVof his garmentsוַיִּקְרָעֵםvay/yik/ra/EMand tore themוְגַםve/GAMand alsoכׇּל־הָאֲנָשִׁיםkol-ha/a/na/SHIMall the menאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoאִתּוֹ׃it/TOwith him

    Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

12. 12

    וַיִּסְפְּדוּvay/yis/pe/DUand they mournedוַיִּבְכּוּvay/yiv/KUand they weptוַיָּצֻמוּvay/ya/TSU/muand they fastedעַד־הָעָרֶבad-ha/A/revuntil the eveningעַל־שָׁאוּלal-Sha/ULfor Saulוְעַל־יְהוֹנָתָןve/AL-ye/ho/na/TANand for Jonathanבְּנוֹbe/NOhis sonוְעַל־עַםve/AL-amand for the people ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוְעַל־בֵּיתve/AL-betand for the house ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelכִּיkibecauseנָפְלוּna/fe/LUthey had fallenבֶּחָרֶב׃be/CHA/revby the sword

    And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

13. 13

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־הַנַּעַרel-han/NA/arto the young manהַמַּגִּידham/mag/GIDthat toldלוֹloto himאֵיewhereמִזֶּהmiz/ZEfrom thisאָתָּהAT/taare youוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidבֶּן־אִישׁben-ishthe son of a manגֵּרgera strangerעֲמָלֵקִיA/ma/le/KIan Amalekiteאָנֹכִי׃a/no/KHII

    And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

14. 14

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֵיךְekhhowלֹאlonotיָרֵאתָya/RE/tawere you afraidלִשְׁלֹחַlish/LO/achto stretch outיָדְךָya/de/KHAyour handלְשַׁחֵתle/sha/CHETto destroyאֶת־מְשִׁיחַet-me/SHI/achthe anointed ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?

15. 15

    וַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand calledדָוִדDa/VIDDavidלְאַחַדle/a/CHADto oneמֵהַנְּעָרִיםme/han/ne/a/RIMof the young menוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidגַּשׁgashgo nearפְּגַע־בּוֹpe/GA-bofall upon himוַיַּכֵּהוּvay/yak/KE/huand he struck himוַיָּמֹת׃vay/ya/MOTthat he died

    And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

16. 16

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himדָּוִדDa/VIDDavid(דמיך)damayakh[דָּמְךָ]da/me/KHAyour bloodעַל־רֹאשֶׁךָal-ro/SHE/khaupon your headכִּיkiforפִיךָFI/khayour mouthעָנָהa/NAhas testifiedבְךָve/KHAagainst youלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIIמֹתַתִּיmo/TAT/tiI have killedאֶת־מְשִׁיחַet-me/SHI/achthe anointed ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD's anointed.

17. 17

    וַיְקֹנֵןvay/ko/NENand lamentedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־הַקִּינָהet-hak/ki/NAthe lamentationהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisעַל־שָׁאוּלal-Sha/ULover Saulוְעַל־יְהוֹנָתָןve/AL-ye/ho/na/TANand over Jonathanבְּנוֹ׃be/NOhis son

    And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:

18. 18

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand he saidלְלַמֵּדle/lam/MEDto teachבְּנֵי־יְהוּדָהbe/NE-ye/hu/DAthe children of JudahקָשֶׁתKA/shetthe bowהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdכְתוּבָהkhe/tu/VAit is writtenעַל־סֵפֶרal-SE/ferin the book ofהַיָּשָׁר׃Hay/ya/SHARJasher

    (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

19. 19

    הַצְּבִיhats/tse/VIthe beautyיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELO Israelעַל־בָּמוֹתֶיךָal-ba/mo/TE/khaupon your high placesחָלָלcha/LALis slainאֵיךְekhhowנָפְלוּna/fe/LUhave fallenגִבּוֹרִים׃gib/bo/RIMthe mighty

    The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!

20. 20

    אַל־תַּגִּידוּal-tag/GI/dudo not tell itבְגַתve/GATin Gathאַל־תְּבַשְּׂרוּal-te/vas/se/RUdo not announce itבְּחוּצֹתbe/chu/TSOTin the streets ofאַשְׁקְלוֹןAsh/ke/LONAshkelonפֶּן־תִּשְׂמַחְנָהpen-tis/MACH/nalest they rejoiceבְּנוֹתbe/NOTthe daughters ofפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesפֶּן־תַּעֲלֹזְנָהpen-ta/a/LOZ/nalest they exultבְּנוֹתbe/NOTthe daughters ofהָעֲרֵלִים׃ha/a/re/LIMthe uncircumcised

    Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21. 21

    הָרֵיha/REO mountainsבַגִּלְבֹּעַVag/gil/BO/ain Gilboaאַל־טַלal-talno dewוְאַל־מָטָרve/AL-ma/TARand no rainעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMupon youוּשְׂדֵיu/se/DEnor fields ofתְרוּמֹתte/ru/MOTofferingsכִּיkiforשָׁםshamthereנִגְעַלnig/ALwas defiledמָגֵןma/GENthe shield ofגִּבּוֹרִיםgib/bo/RIMthe mightyמָגֵןma/GENthe shield ofשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulבְּלִיbe/LInotמָשִׁיחַma/SHI/achanointedבַּשָּׁמֶן׃bash/SHA/menwith oil

    Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

    מִדַּםmid/DAMfrom the blood ofחֲלָלִיםcha/la/LIMthe slainמֵחֵלֶבme/CHE/levfrom the fat ofגִּבּוֹרִיםgib/bo/RIMthe mightyקֶשֶׁתKE/shetthe bow ofיְהוֹנָתָןYe/ho/na/TANJonathanלֹאlonotנָשׂוֹגna/SOGturnedאָחוֹרa/CHORbackוְחֶרֶבve/CHE/revand the sword ofשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulלֹאlonotתָשׁוּבta/SHUVreturnedרֵיקָם׃re/KAMempty

    From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.

    שָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulוִיהוֹנָתָןVi/ho/na/TANand Jonathanהַנֶּאֱהָבִיםhan/ne/e/ha/VIMthe belovedוְהַנְּעִימִםve/han/ne/i/MIMand the lovelyבְּחַיֵּיהֶםbe/chay/ye/HEMin their livesוּבְמוֹתָםu/ve/mo/TAMand in their deathלֹאlonotנִפְרָדוּnif/RA/duwere they partedמִנְּשָׁרִיםmin/ne/sha/RIMthan eaglesקַלּוּKAL/luthey were swifterמֵאֲרָיוֹתme/a/ra/YOTthan lionsגָּבֵרוּ׃ga/VE/ruthey were stronger

    Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

    בְּנוֹתbe/NOTthe daughters ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelאֶל־שָׁאוּלel-Sha/ULover Saulבְּכֶינָהbe/KHE/naweepהַמַּלְבִּשְׁכֶםham/mal/bish/KHEMwho clothed youשָׁנִיsha/NIin scarletעִם־עֲדָנִיםim-a/da/NIMwith fineryהַמַּעֲלֶהham/ma/a/LEwho putעֲדִיa/DIornaments ofזָהָבza/HAVgoldעַלaluponלְבוּשְׁכֶן׃le/vush/KHENyour apparel

    Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

25. 25

    אֵיךְekhhowנָפְלוּna/fe/LUhave fallenגִבֹּרִיםgib/bo/RIMthe mightyבְּתוֹךְbe/TOKHin the midst ofהַמִּלְחָמָהham/mil/cha/MAthe battleיְהוֹנָתָןYe/ho/na/TANJonathanעַל־בָּמוֹתֶיךָal-ba/mo/TE/khaupon your high placesחָלָל׃cha/LALslain

    How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

26. 26

    צַר־לִיtsar-liI am distressedעָלֶיךָa/LE/khafor youאָחִיa/CHImy brotherיְהוֹנָתָןYe/ho/na/TANJonathanנָעַמְתָּna/AM/tayou were pleasantלִּיlito meמְאֹדme/ODveryנִפְלְאַתָהnif/le/A/tawas wonderfulאַהֲבָתְךָa/ha/va/te/KHAyour loveלִיlito meמֵאַהֲבַתme/a/ha/VATmore than the love ofנָשִׁים׃na/SHIMwomen

    I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

27. 27

    אֵיךְekhhowנָפְלוּna/fe/LUhave fallenגִבּוֹרִיםgib/bo/RIMthe mightyוַיֹּאבְדוּvay/yo/ve/DUand have perishedכְּלֵיke/LEthe weapons ofמִלְחָמָה׃mil/cha/MAwar

    How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
