   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passאַחֲרֵי־כֵןa/cha/RE-khenafter thisוַיָּמׇתvay/YA/motand diedמֶלֶךְME/lekhthe king ofבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonוַיִּמְלֹךְvay/yim/LOKHand reignedחָנוּןCha/NUNHanunבְּנוֹbe/NOhis sonתַּחְתָּיו׃tach/TAYVin his place

   And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶעֱשֶׂה־חֶסֶדe/e/SE-CHE/sedI will show kindnessעִם־חָנוּןim-Cha/NUNwith Hanunבֶּן־נָחָשׁben-Na/CHASHthe son of Nahashכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasעָשָׂהa/SAshowedאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherעִמָּדִיim/ma/DIwith meחֶסֶדCHE/sedkindnessוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidלְנַחֲמוֹle/na/cha/MOto comfort himבְּיַד־עֲבָדָיוbe/YAD-a/va/DAYVby the hand of his servantsאֶל־אָבִיוel-a/VIVconcerning his fatherוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand cameעַבְדֵיav/DEthe servants ofדָוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶרֶץE/retsinto the land ofבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofעַמּוֹן׃Am/MONAmmon

   Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidשָׂרֵיsa/REthe princes ofבְנֵי־עַמּוֹןve/NE-am/MONthe children of Ammonאֶל־חָנוּןel-Cha/NUNto Hanunאֲדֹנֵיהֶםa/do/ne/HEMtheir lordהַמְכַבֵּדham/khab/BEDis honoringדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־אָבִיךָet-a/VI/khayour fatherבְּעֵינֶיךָbe/e/NE/khain your eyesכִּי־שָׁלַחki-sha/LACHthat he has sentלְךָle/KHAto youמְנַחֲמִיםme/na/cha/MIMcomfortersהֲלוֹאha/LOis it notבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURin orderחֲקֹרcha/KORto searchאֶת־הָעִירet-ha/IRthe cityוּלְרַגְּלָהּu/le/rag/ge/LAand to spy it outוּלְהׇפְכָהּu/le/hof/KHAand to overthrow itשָׁלַחsha/LACHsentדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־עֲבָדָיוet-a/va/DAYVhis servantsאֵלֶיךָ׃e/LE/khato you

   And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

   וַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookחָנוּןCha/NUNHanunאֶת־עַבְדֵיet-av/DEthe servants ofדָוִדDa/VIDDavidוַיְגַלַּחvay/gal/LACHand shaved offאֶת־חֲצִיet-cha/TSIhalf ofזְקָנָםze/ka/NAMtheir beardsוַיִּכְרֹתvay/yikh/ROTand cut offאֶת־מַדְוֵיהֶםet-mad/ve/HEMtheir garmentsבַּחֵצִיba/CHE/tsiin the middleעַדadas far asשְׁתוֹתֵיהֶםshe/to/te/HEMtheir buttocksוַיְשַׁלְּחֵם׃vay/shal/le/CHEMand sent them away

   Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

   וַיַּגִּדוּvay/yag/GI/duand they toldלְדָוִדle/Da/VIDto Davidוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentלִקְרָאתָםlik/ra/TAMto meet themכִּי־הָיוּki-ha/YUfor wereהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menנִכְלָמִיםnikh/la/MIMhumiliatedמְאֹדme/ODveryוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingשְׁבוּshe/VUstayבִירֵחוֹVi/re/CHOat Jerichoעַד־יְצַמַּחad-ye/tsam/MACHuntil growsזְקַנְכֶםze/kan/KHEMyour beardוְשַׁבְתֶּם׃ve/shav/TEMand return

   When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

   And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men.

   וַיִּשְׁמַעvay/yish/MAand heardדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentאֶת־יוֹאָבet-Yo/AVJoabוְאֵתve/ETandכׇּל־הַצָּבָאkol-hats/tsa/VAall the armyהַגִּבֹּרִים׃hag/gib/bo/RIMthe mighty men

   And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

8. 8

   וַיֵּצְאוּvay/yets/Uand came outבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonוַיַּעַרְכוּvay/ya/ar/KHUand drew upמִלְחָמָהmil/cha/MAthe battleפֶּתַחPE/tachat the entrance ofהַשָּׁעַרhash/SHA/arthe gateוַאֲרַםva/A/RAMand AramצוֹבָאTso/VAZobahוּרְחוֹבu/Re/CHOVand Rehobוְאִישׁ־טוֹבve/ISH-tovand the men of Tobוּמַעֲכָהu/Ma/a/KHAand Maachahלְבַדָּםle/vad/DAMby themselvesבַּשָּׂדֶה׃bas/sa/DEin the open country

   And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish-tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

   וַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabכִּי־הָיְתָהki-ha/ye/TAthat wasאֵלָיוe/LAYVagainst himפְּנֵיpe/NEthe front ofהַמִּלְחָמָהham/mil/cha/MAthe battleמִפָּנִיםmip/pa/NIMfrom the frontוּמֵאָחוֹרu/me/a/CHORand from behindוַיִּבְחַרvay/yiv/CHARand choseמִכֹּלmik/KOLfrom allבְּחוּרֵיbe/chu/REthe choice men of(בישראל)vayasharl[יִשְׂרָאֵל]Yis/ra/ELIsraelוַיַּעֲרֹךְvay/ya/a/ROKHand drew them upלִקְרַאתlik/RATagainstאֲרָם׃A/RAMAram

   When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

    וְאֵתve/ETandיֶתֶרYE/terthe rest ofהָעָםha/AMthe peopleנָתַןna/TANhe gaveבְּיַדbe/YADinto the hand ofאַבְשַׁיAv/SHAYAbishaiאָחִיוa/CHIVhis brotherוַיַּעֲרֹךְvay/ya/a/ROKHand he drew them upלִקְרַאתlik/RATagainstבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofעַמּוֹן׃Am/MONAmmon

    And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.

11. 11

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאִם־תֶּחֱזַקim-te/che/ZAKif is too strongאֲרָםA/RAMAramמִמֶּנִּיmim/MEN/nithan Iוְהָיִתָהve/ha/YI/tathen you shall beלִּיlito meלִישׁוּעָהli/shu/Afor deliveranceוְאִם־בְּנֵיve/IM-be/NEbut if the children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonיֶחֶזְקוּye/chez/KUare strongerמִמְּךָmim/me/KHAthan youוְהָלַכְתִּיve/ha/lakh/TIthen I will goלְהוֹשִׁיעַle/ho/SHI/ato saveלָךְ׃lakhyou

    And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

12. 12

    חֲזַקcha/ZAKbe strongוְנִתְחַזַּקve/nit/chaz/ZAKand let us show ourselves strongבְּעַד־עַמֵּנוּbe/AD-am/ME/nufor our peopleוּבְעַדu/ve/ADand forעָרֵיa/REthe cities ofאֱלֹהֵינוּe/lo/HE/nuour Godוַיהֹוָהve-Adonaiand the LORDיַעֲשֶׂהya/a/SEmay doהַטּוֹבhat/TOVwhat is goodבְּעֵינָיו׃be/e/NAYVin His eyes

    Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.

13. 13

    וַיִּגַּשׁvay/yig/GASHand drew nearיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wereעִמּוֹim/MOwith himלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAto the battleבַּאֲרָםba/A/RAMagainst Aramוַיָנֻסוּva/ya/NU/suand they fledמִפָּנָיו׃mip/pa/NAYVfrom before him

    And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.

14. 14

    וּבְנֵיu/ve/NEand the children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonרָאוּra/Usawכִּי־נָסki-nasthat had fledאֲרָםA/RAMAramוַיָנֻסוּva/ya/NU/suand they fledמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbeforeאֲבִישַׁיA/vi/SHAYAbishaiוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand enteredהָעִירha/IRthe cityוַיָּשׇׁבvay/YA/shovand he returnedיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabמֵעַלme/ALfromבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameיְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִם׃Ye/ru/sha/LA/yimJerusalem

    And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

15. 15

    וַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawאֲרָםA/RAMAramכִּיkithatנִגַּףnig/GAFthey had been routedלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיֵּאָסְפוּvay/ye/a/se/FUand they gatheredיָחַד׃YA/chadtogether

    And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

16. 16

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentהֲדַדְעֶזֶרHa/dad/E/zerHadadezerוַיֹּצֵאvay/yo/TSEand brought outאֶת־אֲרָםet-A/RAMAramאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasמֵעֵבֶרme/E/verbeyondהַנָּהָרhan/na/HARthe riverוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameחֵילָםChe/LAMto Helamוְשׁוֹבַךְve/Sho/VAKHand Shobachשַׂר־צְבָאsar-tse/VAthe commander of the army ofהֲדַדְעֶזֶרHa/dad/E/zerHadadezerלִפְנֵיהֶם׃lif/ne/HEMbefore them

    And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

17. 17

    וַיֻּגַּדvay/yug/GADand it was toldלְדָוִדle/Da/VIDto Davidוַיֶּאֱסֹףvay/ye/e/SOFand he gatheredאֶת־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Kol-yis/ra/ELall Israelוַיַּעֲבֹרvay/ya/a/VORand passed overאֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּןet-Hay/yar/DENthe Jordanוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameחֵלָאמָהChe/LA/mato Helamוַיַּעַרְכוּvay/ya/ar/KHUand drew upאֲרָםA/RAMAramלִקְרַאתlik/RATagainstדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidוַיִּלָּחֲמוּvay/yil/la/cha/MUand they foughtעִמּוֹ׃im/MOwith him

    And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

    וַיָּנׇסvay/YA/nosand fledאֲרָםA/RAMAramמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיַּהֲרֹגvay/ya/ha/ROGand killedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidמֵאֲרָםme/A/RAMof Aramשְׁבַעshe/VAsevenמֵאוֹתme/OThundredרֶכֶבRE/khevchariotsוְאַרְבָּעִיםve/ar/ba/IMand fortyאֶלֶףE/lefthousandפָּרָשִׁיםpa/ra/SHIMhorsemenוְאֵתve/ETandשׁוֹבַךְSho/VAKHShobachשַׂר־צְבָאוֹsar-tse/va/Othe commander of his armyהִכָּהhik/KAhe struckוַיָּמׇתvay/YA/motand he diedשָׁם׃shamthere

    And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.

    וַיִּרְאוּvay/yir/Uand sawכׇל־הַמְּלָכִיםkhol-ham/me/la/KHIMall the kingsעַבְדֵיav/DEthe servants ofהֲדַדְעֶזֶרHa/dad/E/zerHadadezerכִּיkithatנִגְּפוּnig/ge/FUthey had been routedלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיַּשְׁלִמוּvay/yash/LI/muand they made peaceאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Yis/ra/ELIsraelוַיַּעַבְדוּםvay/ya/av/DUMand served themוַיִּרְאוּvay/yir/Uand fearedאֲרָםA/RAMAramלְהוֹשִׁיעַle/ho/SHI/ato helpעוֹדodany moreאֶת־בְּנֵיet-be/NEthe children ofעַמּוֹן׃Am/MONAmmon

    And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
