   Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

   וַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand he didהַיָּשָׁרhay/ya/SHARwhat was rightבְּעֵינֵיbe/e/NEin the eyes ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDרַקrakbutלֹאlonotבְּלֵבָבbe/le/VAVwith a heartשָׁלֵם׃sha/LEMwhole

   And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERas soon asחָזְקָהcha/ze/KAwas confirmedהַמַּמְלָכָהham/mam/la/KHAthe kingdomעָלָיוa/LAYVupon himוַיַּהֲרֹגvay/ya/ha/ROGthat he killedאֶת־עֲבָדָיוet-a/va/DAYVhis servantsהַמַּכִּיםham/mak/KIMwho had struckאֶת־הַמֶּלֶךְet-ham/ME/lekhthe kingאָבִיו׃a/VIVhis father

   Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.

   But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.

   Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.

   He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.

   וְאִישׁve/ISHbut a man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodבָּאbacameאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhO kingאַל־יָבוֹאal-ya/VOlet not goעִמְּךָim/me/KHAwith youצְבָאtse/VAthe army ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelכִּיkiforאֵיןenthere is noיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDעִם־יִשְׂרָאֵלim-Yis/ra/ELwith Israelכֹּלkolallבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofאֶפְרָיִם׃Ef/RA/yimEphraim

   But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.

   כִּיkibutאִם־בֹּאim-boif goאַתָּהat/TAyouעֲשֵׂהa/SEdo itחֲזַקcha/ZAKbe strongלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAfor battleיַכְשִׁילְךָyakh/shi/le/KHAwill make you fallהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאוֹיֵבo/YEVthe enemyכִּיkiforיֶשׁ־כֹּחַyesh-KO/achthere is powerבֵּאלֹהִיםbe/lo/HIMin Godלַעְזוֹרla/ZORto helpוּלְהַכְשִׁיל׃u/le/hakh/SHILand to make fall

   But if thou wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲמַצְיָהוּA/mats/YA/huAmaziahלְאִישׁle/ISHto the man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodוּמַה־לַּעֲשׂוֹתu/MA-la/a/SOTbut what shall we doלִמְאַתlim/ATfor the hundredהַכִּכָּרhak/kik/KARtalentsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasנָתַתִּיna/TAT/tiI have givenלִגְדוּדlig/DUDto the troop ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאִישׁishthe man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodיֵשׁyeshthere isלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaiwith the LORDלָתֶתLA/tetto giveלְךָle/KHAyouהַרְבֵּהhar/BEmuch moreמִזֶּה׃miz/ZEthan this

   And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.

    וַיַּבְדִּילֵםvay/yav/di/LEMthen separated themאֲמַצְיָהוּA/mats/YA/huAmaziahלְהַגְּדוּדle/hag/ge/DUDthe troopאֲשֶׁר־בָּאa/SHER-bathat had comeאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himמֵאֶפְרַיִםme/Ef/RA/yimof Ephraimלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto goלִמְקוֹמָםlim/ko/MAMhomeוַיִּחַרvay/YI/charand was kindledאַפָּםap/PAMtheir angerמְאֹדme/ODgreatlyבִּיהוּדָהbI/hu/DAagainst Judahוַיָּשׁוּבוּvay/ya/SHU/vuand they returnedלִמְקוֹמָםlim/ko/MAMhomeבׇּחֳרִי־אָף׃bo/cho/RI-afin fierce anger

    Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.

    וַאֲמַצְיָהוּva/A/mats/YA/huand Amaziahהִתְחַזַּקhit/chaz/ZAKtook courageוַיִּנְהַגvay/yin/HAGand led outאֶת־עַמּוֹet-am/MOhis peopleוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand went toגֵּיאgethe valley ofהַמֶּלַחHam/ME/lachSaltוַיַּךְvay/YAKHand he struckאֶת־בְּנֵי־שֵׂעִירet-Be/NE-se/IRthe children of Seirעֲשֶׂרֶתa/SE/rettenאֲלָפִים׃a/la/FIMthousand

    And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand.

    וַעֲשֶׂרֶתva/a/SE/retand tenאֲלָפִיםa/la/FIMthousandחַיִּיםchay/YIMaliveשָׁבוּSHA/vucarried away captiveבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוַיְבִיאוּםvay/vi/UMand they brought themלְרֹאשׁle/ROSHto the top ofהַסָּלַעhas/SA/lathe rockוַיַּשְׁלִיכוּםvay/yash/li/KHUMand threw them downמֵרֹאשׁ־הַסֶּלַעme/ROSH-has/SE/lafrom the top of the rockוְכֻלָּםve/khul/LAMso that all of themנִבְקָעוּ׃niv/KA/uwere dashed to pieces

    And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.

    וּבְנֵיu/ve/NEbut the men ofהַגְּדוּדhag/ge/DUDthe troopאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomהֵשִׁיבhe/SHIVsent backאֲמַצְיָהוּA/mats/YA/huAmaziahמִלֶּכֶתmil/LE/khetfrom goingעִמּוֹim/MOwith himלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAto battleוַיִּפְשְׁטוּvay/yif/she/TUraidedבְּעָרֵיbe/a/REin the cities ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahמִשֹּׁמְרוֹןmish/Shom/RONfrom Samariaוְעַד־בֵּיתve/AD-betand as far as Beth-חוֹרוֹןcho/RONhoronוַיַּכּוּvay/yak/KUand they struckמֵהֶםme/HEMof themשְׁלֹשֶׁתshe/LO/shetthreeאֲלָפִיםa/la/FIMthousandוַיָּבֹזּוּvay/ya/VOZ/zuand they plunderedבִּזָּהbiz/ZAplunderרַבָּה׃rab/BAgreat

    But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterבוֹאvothe coming ofאֲמַצְיָהוּA/mats/YA/huAmaziahמֵהַכּוֹתme/hak/KOTfrom strikingאֶת־אֲדוֹמִיםet-A/do/MIMthe Edomitesוַיָּבֵאvay/ya/VEand he broughtאֶת־אֱלֹהֵיet-e/lo/HEthe gods ofבְּנֵיbe/NEthe sons ofשֵׂעִירSe/IRSeirוַיַּעֲמִידֵםvay/ya/a/mi/DEMand set them upלוֹlofor himselfלֵאלֹהִיםle/lo/HIMas godsוְלִפְנֵיהֶםve/lif/ne/HEMand before themיִשְׁתַּחֲוֶהyish/ta/cha/VEhe bowed downוְלָהֶםve/la/HEMand to themיְקַטֵּר׃ye/kat/TERhe burned incense

    Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.

    וַיִּחַר־אַףvay/YI/char-afand burned the anger ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבַּאֲמַצְיָהוּba/A/mats/YA/huagainst Amaziahוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himנָבִיאna/VIa prophetוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹloto himלָמָּהLAM/mawhyדָרַשְׁתָּda/RASH/tahave you soughtאֶת־אֱלֹהֵיet-e/lo/HEthe gods ofהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹא־הִצִּילוּlo-hits/TSI/lucould not deliverאֶת־עַמָּםet-am/MAMtheir peopleמִיָּדֶךָ׃miy/ya/DE/khafrom your hand

    Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passבְּדַבְּרוֹbe/dab/be/ROas he spokeאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹloto himהַלְיוֹעֵץhal/yo/ETSas counselorלַמֶּלֶךְlam/ME/lekhthe kingנְתַנּוּךָne/tan/NU/khahave we made youחֲדַל־לְךָcha/DAL-le/KHAstopלָמָּהLAM/mawhyיַכּוּךָyak/KU/khashould they strike youוַיֶּחְדַּלvay/yech/DALthen stoppedהַנָּבִיאhan/na/VIthe prophetוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיָדַעְתִּיya/DA/tiI knowכִּי־יָעַץki-ya/ATSthat has determinedאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodלְהַשְׁחִיתֶךָle/hash/chi/TE/khato destroy youכִּי־עָשִׂיתָki-a/SI/tabecause you have doneזֹּאתzotthisוְלֹאve/LOand notשָׁמַעְתָּsha/MA/tahave listenedלַעֲצָתִי׃la/a/tsa/TIto my counsel

    And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.

    וַיִּוָּעַץvay/yiv/va/ATSthen took adviceאֲמַצְיָהוּA/mats/YA/huAmaziahמֶלֶךְME/lekhthe king ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentאֶל־יוֹאָשׁel-Yo/ASHto Joashבֶּן־יְהוֹאָחָזben-Ye/ho/a/CHAZthe son of Jehoahazבֶּן־יֵהוּאben-Ye/HUthe son of JehuמֶלֶךְME/lekhthe king ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelלֵאמֹרle/MORsaying(לך)lakh[לְכָה]le/KHAcomeנִתְרָאֶהnit/ra/Elet us look at each otherפָנִים׃fa/NIMin the face

    Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face.

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentיוֹאָשׁYo/ASHJoashמֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵלME/lekh-Yis/ra/ELthe king of Israelאֶל־אֲמַצְיָהוּel-A/mats/YA/huto Amaziahמֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָהME/lekh-Ye/hu/DAthe king of Judahלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהַחוֹחַha/CHO/achthe thistleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasבַּלְּבָנוֹןbal/Le/va/NONin Lebanonשָׁלַחsha/LACHsentאֶל־הָאֶרֶזel-ha/E/rezto the cedarאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasבַּלְּבָנוֹןbal/Le/va/NONin Lebanonלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingתְּנָה־אֶת־בִּתְּךָte/NA-et-bit/te/KHAgive your daughterלִבְנִיliv/NIfor my sonלְאִשָּׁהle/ish/SHAas wifeוַתַּעֲבֹרvat/ta/a/VORand passed byחַיַּתchay/YATa wild beast ofהַשָּׂדֶהhas/sa/DEthe fieldאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasבַּלְּבָנוֹןbal/Le/va/NONin Lebanonוַתִּרְמֹסvat/tir/MOSand trampledאֶת־הַחוֹחַ׃et-ha/CHO/achthe thistle

    And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.

    אָמַרְתָּa/MAR/tayou sayהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdהִכִּיתָhik/KI/tayou have struckאֶת־אֱדוֹםet-E/DOMEdomוּנְשָׂאֲךָu/ne/sa/a/KHAand has lifted you upלִבְּךָlib/be/KHAyour heartלְהַכְבִּידle/hakh/BIDto boastעַתָּהat/TAnowשְׁבָהshe/VAstayבְּבֵיתֶךָbe/ve/TE/khaat homeלָמָּהLAM/mawhyתִתְגָּרֶהtit/ga/REwould you provokeבְּרָעָהbe/ra/Atroubleוְנָפַלְתָּve/na/fal/TAthat you should fallאַתָּהat/TAyouוִיהוּדָהVi/hu/DAand Judahעִמָּךְ׃im/MAKHwith you

    Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?

    וְלֹא־שָׁמַעve/LO-sha/MAbut would not listenאֲמַצְיָהוּA/mats/YA/huAmaziahכִּיkiforמֵהָאֱלֹהִיםme/ha/e/lo/HIMof Godהִיאhiit wasלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatתִּתָּםtit/TAMHe might give themבְּיָדbe/YADinto the handכִּיkibecauseדָרְשׁוּda/re/SHUthey had soughtאֵת־אֱלֹהֵיet-e/lo/HEthe gods ofאֱדוֹם׃E/DOMEdom

    But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.

21. 21

    וַיַּעַלvay/YA/also went upיוֹאָשׁYo/ASHJoashמֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵלME/lekh-Yis/ra/ELthe king of Israelוַיִּתְרָאוּvay/yit/ra/Uand they looked at each otherפָנִיםfa/NIMin the faceהוּאhuheוַאֲמַצְיָהוּva/A/mats/YA/huand Amaziahמֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָהME/lekh-Ye/hu/DAthe king of Judahבְּבֵיתbe/VETat Beth-שֶׁמֶשׁSHE/meshshemeshאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich belongsלִיהוּדָה׃lI/hu/DAto Judah

    So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.

    וַיִּנָּגֶףvay/yin/NA/gefand was struckיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיָּנֻסוּvay/ya/NU/suand they fledאִישׁisheachלְאֹהָלָיו׃le/o/ha/LAYVto his tent

    And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.

    And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.

    And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.

    And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.

    וְיֶתֶרve/YE/terand the rest ofדִּבְרֵיdiv/REthe acts ofאֲמַצְיָהוּA/mats/YA/huAmaziahהָרִאשֹׁנִיםha/ri/sho/NIMthe firstוְהָאַחֲרוֹנִיםve/ha/a/cha/ro/NIMand the lastהֲלֹאha/LOare notהִנָּםhin/NAMtheyכְּתוּבִיםke/tu/VIMwrittenעַל־סֵפֶרal-SE/ferin the book ofמַלְכֵי־יְהוּדָהmal/KHE-Ye/hu/DAthe kings of Judahוְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃ve/Yis/ra/ELand Israel

    Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?

    וּמֵעֵתu/me/ETand from the timeאֲשֶׁר־סָרa/SHER-sarthat turned awayאֲמַצְיָהוּA/mats/YA/huAmaziahמֵאַחֲרֵיme/a/cha/REfrom followingיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוַיִּקְשְׁרוּvay/yik/she/RUand they conspiredעָלָיוa/LAYVagainst himקֶשֶׁרKE/shera conspiracyבִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםbI/ru/sha/LA/yimin Jerusalemוַיָּנׇסvay/YA/nosand he fledלָכִישָׁהla/KHI/shato Lachishוַיִּשְׁלְחוּvay/yish/le/CHUbut they sentאַחֲרָיוa/cha/RAYVafter himלָכִישָׁהla/KHI/shato Lachishוַיְמִיתֻהוּvay/mi/TU/huand put him to deathשָׁם׃shamthere

    Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.

    וַיִּשָּׂאֻהוּvay/yis/sa/U/huand they carried himעַל־הַסּוּסִיםal-has/su/SIMon horsesוַיִּקְבְּרוּvay/yik/be/RUand they buriedאֹתוֹo/TOhimעִם־אֲבֹתָיוim-a/vo/TAYVwith his fathersבְּעִירbe/IRin the city ofיְהוּדָה׃Ye/hu/DAJudah

    And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
