   בִּשְׁנַתin the year ofשְׁמוֹנֶה־עֶשְׂרֵהeighteenלַמֶּלֶךְthe kingיָרׇבְעָםJeroboamוַיִּמְלֹךְand he did reignאֲבִיָּהAbijahעַל־יְהוּדָה׃upon Judah

   Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.

2. 2

   שָׁלוֹשׁthreeשָׁנִיםyearsמָלַךְreignedבִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםin Jerusalemוְשֵׁםand the name ofאִמּוֹhis motherמִיכָיָהוּMicaiahבַת־אוּרִיאֵלthe daughter of Urielמִן־גִּבְעָהfrom a hillוּמִלְחָמָהand warהָיְתָהwasבֵּיןamongאֲבִיָּהAbijahוּבֵיןand betweenיָרׇבְעָם׃Jeroboam

   He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

   וַיֶּאְסֹרand he harnessedאֲבִיָּהAbijahאֶת־הַמִּלְחָמָהthe battleבְּחַיִלwith a retinueגִּבּוֹרֵיmighty men ofמִלְחָמָהwarאַרְבַּע־מֵאוֹתfour hundredאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenבָּחוּרchosenוְיָרׇבְעָםand Jeroboamעָרַךְset in arrayעִמּוֹwith himמִלְחָמָהwarבִּשְׁמוֹנֶהwith eightמֵאוֹתhundredאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenבָּחוּרchosenגִּבּוֹרmightyחָיִל׃of valor

   And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.

   וַיָּקׇםand he aroseאֲבִיָּהAbijahמֵעַלfrom uponלְהַרto mountainצְמָרַיִםZemaraimאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּהַרon the mount ofאֶפְרָיִםEphraimוַיֹּאמֶרand saidשְׁמָעוּנִיlisten to meיָרׇבְעָםJeroboamוְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃and all Israel

   And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel;

   הֲלֹאis it notלָכֶםto youלָדַעַתto knowכִּיforיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelנָתַןgaveמַמְלָכָהkingdomלְדָוִידof Davidעַל־יִשְׂרָאֵלupon Israelלְעוֹלָםforeverלוֹto himוּלְבָנָיוand for his sonsבְּרִיתcovenant ofמֶלַח׃salt

   Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?

6. 6

   וַיָּקׇםand he aroseיָרׇבְעָםJeroboamבֶּן־נְבָטson of Nebatעֶבֶדthe servant ofשְׁלֹמֹהSolomonבֶן־דָּוִידson of Davidוַיִּמְרֹדand he rebelledעַל־אֲדֹנָיו׃upon his master

   Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord.

7. 7

   וַיִּקָּבְצוּand gathered themselvesעָלָיוupon himאֲנָשִׁיםmenרֵקִיםemptyבְּנֵיthe sons ofבְלִיַּעַלBelialוַיִּתְאַמְּצוּzealously strivingעַל־רְחַבְעָםupon Rehoboamבֶּן־שְׁלֹמֹהson of Solomonוּרְחַבְעָםand Rehoboamהָיָהwasנַעַרa young manוְרַךְ־לֵבָבand the weak of heartוְלֹאand notהִתְחַזַּקthey strengthened themselvesלִפְנֵיהֶם׃down before them

   And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.

8. 8

   וְעַתָּהand nowאַתֶּםyou areאֹמְרִיםsayלְהִתְחַזֵּקto be unshakenלִפְנֵיbeforeמַמְלֶכֶתthe kingdom ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDבְּיַדin the hand ofבְּנֵיthe sons ofדָוִידDavidוְאַתֶּםand youהָמוֹןa multitudeרָבmuchוְעִמָּכֶםand are with youעֶגְלֵיcalves ofזָהָבgoldאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהhe didלָכֶםto youיָרׇבְעָםJeroboamלֵאלֹהִים׃for gods

   And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.

9. 9

   הֲלֹאis it notהִדַּחְתֶּםhave you driven outאֶת־כֹּהֲנֵיthose priests ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־בְּנֵיthe sons ofאַהֲרֹןAaronוְהַלְוִיִּםand the Levitesוַתַּעֲשׂוּand you have appointedלָכֶםto youכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsכְּעַמֵּיlike the peoples ofהָאֲרָצוֹתthe landsכׇּל־הַבָּאall that comesלְמַלֵּאto fillיָדוֹhis handבְּפַרwith a bullבֶּן־בָּקָרyoung of the herdוְאֵילִםand ramsשִׁבְעָהsevenוְהָיָהand beכֹהֵןa priestלְלֹאto notאֱלֹהִים׃gods

   Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.

10. 10

    וַאֲנַחְנוּand we areיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵינוּour Godוְלֹאand notעֲזַבְנֻהוּwe have forsaken himוְכֹהֲנִיםpriestsמְשָׁרְתִיםministeringלַיהֹוָהto the LORDבְּנֵיthe sons ofאַהֲרֹןAaronוְהַלְוִיִּםand the Levitesבַּמְלָאכֶת׃are in the work

    But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business:

11. 11

    וּמַקְטִרִיםand are burningלַיהֹוָהto the LORDעֹלוֹתburnt offeringsבַּבֹּקֶר־בַּבֹּקֶרin the morning in the morningוּבָעֶרֶב־בָּעֶרֶבand in the evening in the eveningוּקְטֹרֶת־סַמִּיםand the incense of perfumeוּמַעֲרֶכֶתand the row ofלֶחֶםbreadעַל־הַשֻּׁלְחָןupon the tableהַטָּהוֹרthe pureוּמְנוֹרַתand the lampstand ofהַזָּהָבthe goldוְנֵרֹתֶיהָand its lampsלְבָעֵרconsumedבָּעֶרֶבin the eveningבָּעֶרֶבin the eveningכִּי־שֹׁמְרִיםbecause the ones who keepאֲנַחְנוּweאֶת־מִשְׁמֶרֶתthe charge ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵינוּour Godוְאַתֶּםand youעֲזַבְתֶּםyou have forsakenאֹתוֹ׃him

    And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken him.

12. 12

    וְהִנֵּהand beholdעִמָּנוּwith usבָרֹאשׁat the headהָאֱלֹהִיםGodוְכֹהֲנָיוand his priestsוַחֲצֹצְרוֹתand the trumpets ofהַתְּרוּעָהthe alarmלְהָרִיעַto sound the battle signalעֲלֵיכֶםover youבְּנֵיthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאַל־תִּלָּחֲמוּdo not you shall do battleעִם־יְהֹוָהwith the LORDאֱלֹהֵי־אֲבֹתֵיכֶםGod of your fathersכִּי־לֹאthat notתַצְלִיחוּ׃prosper

    And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.

13. 13

    וְיָרׇבְעָםand Jeroboamהֵסֵבbrought aboutאֶת־הַמַּאְרָבthe ambushלָבוֹאto comeמֵאַחֲרֵיהֶםbehind themוַיִּהְיוּand they wereלִפְנֵיbeforeיְהוּדָהJudahוְהַמַּאְרָבand the ambushמֵאַחֲרֵיהֶם׃behind them

    But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.

14. 14

    וַיִּפְנוּand they turnedיְהוּדָהJudahוְהִנֵּהand beholdלָהֶםto themהַמִּלְחָמָהthe battleפָּנִיםfaceוְאָחוֹרand backוַיִּצְעֲקוּand they cried outלַיהֹוָהto the LORDוְהַכֹּהֲנִיםand the priests(מחצצרים)[מַחְצְרִים]trumpetersבַּחֲצֹצְרוֹת׃on trumpets

    And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.

15. 15

    וַיָּרִיעוּand they shoutedאִישׁthe men ofיְהוּדָהJudahוַיְהִיand it came to passבְּהָרִיעַwhen sounded the battle signalאִישׁthe men ofיְהוּדָהJudahוְהָאֱלֹהִיםand Godנָגַףhe defeatedאֶת־יָרׇבְעָםJeroboamוְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלand all IsraelלִפְנֵיbeforeאֲבִיָּהAbijahוִיהוּדָה׃and Judah

    Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

16. 16

    וַיָּנוּסוּand they fledבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelמִפְּנֵיbecause ofיְהוּדָהJudahוַיִּתְּנֵםand delivered themאֱלֹהִיםGodבְּיָדָם׃into their hands

    And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand.

17. 17

    וַיַּכּוּand they struckבָהֶםamong themאֲבִיָּהAbijahוְעַמּוֹand his peopleמַכָּהa slaughterרַבָּהmuchוַיִּפְּלוּand they fellחֲלָלִיםthose slainמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלfrom Israelחֲמֵשׁ־מֵאוֹתfive hundredאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenבָּחוּר׃chosen

    And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

18. 18

    וַיִּכָּנְעוּand they submittedבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלsons of Israelבָּעֵתat the timeהַהִיאthatוַיֶּאֶמְצוּand they were strongבְּנֵיthe sons ofיְהוּדָהJudahכִּיbecauseנִשְׁעֲנוּthey dependedעַל־יְהֹוָהupon the LORDאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofאֲבוֹתֵיהֶם׃their fathers

    Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers.

19. 19

    וַיִּרְדֹּףand pursueאֲבִיָּהAbijahאַחֲרֵיafterיָרׇבְעָםJeroboamוַיִּלְכֹּדand he capturedמִמֶּנּוּfrom himעָרִיםcitiesאֶת־בֵּית־אֵלBeth-elוְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶיהָand its daughtersוְאֶת־יְשָׁנָהand Jeshanahוְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶיהָand its daughtersוְאֶת־(עפרון)and[עֶפְרַיִן]Ephrayinוּבְנֹתֶיהָ׃and her daughters

    And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Beth-el with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof.

20. 20

    וְלֹא־עָצַרand not had shut upכֹּחַ־יָרׇבְעָםpower Jeroboamעוֹדany moreבִּימֵיin the days ofאֲבִיָּהוּAbijahוַיִּגְּפֵהוּand struck himיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיָּמֹת׃and he died

    Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.

21. 21

    וַיִּתְחַזֵּקand he strengthened himselfאֲבִיָּהוּAbijahוַיִּשָּׂא־לוֹand marriedנָשִׁיםwomenאַרְבַּע־עֶשְׂרֵהfourteenוַיּוֹלֶדand begatעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyוּשְׁנַיִםand twoבָּנִיםsonsוְשֵׁשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵהand sixteenבָּנוֹת׃daughters

    But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.

22. 22

    וְיֶתֶרand the rest ofדִּבְרֵיthe words ofאֲבִיָּהAbijahוּדְרָכָיוand his waysוּדְבָרָיוand his wordsכְּתוּבִיםthere are writtenבְּמִדְרַשׁin the record ofהַנָּבִיאthe prophetעִדּוֹ׃Iddo

    And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.

23. 23

    וַיִּשְׁכַּבand sleptאֲבִיָּהAbijahעִם־אֲבֹתָיוwith his fathersוַיִּקְבְּרוּand they buriedאֹתוֹhimבְּעִירin the city ofדָּוִידDavidוַיִּמְלֹךְand he did reignאָסָאAsaבְנוֹhis sonתַּחְתָּיוin his steadבְּיָמָיוin his daysשָׁקְטָהand is quietהָאָרֶץthe landעֶשֶׂרtenשָׁנִים׃years

    So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
