   Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.

   He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

   And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.

   And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel;

   Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?

   וַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komyet rose upיָרׇבְעָםYa/rov/AMJeroboamבֶּן־נְבָטben-Ne/VATthe son of NebatעֶבֶדE/vedthe servant ofשְׁלֹמֹהShe/lo/MOSolomonבֶן־דָּוִידven-Da/VIDthe son of Davidוַיִּמְרֹדvay/yim/RODand rebelledעַל־אֲדֹנָיו׃al-a/do/NAYVagainst his master

   Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord.

   וַיִּקָּבְצוּvay/yik/ka/ve/TSUand gatheredעָלָיוa/LAYVto himאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenרֵקִיםre/KIMworthlessבְּנֵיbe/NEsons ofבְלִיַּעַלve/liy/YA/alworthlessnessוַיִּתְאַמְּצוּvay/yit/am/me/TSUand strengthened themselvesעַל־רְחַבְעָםal-Re/chav/AMagainst Rehoboamבֶּן־שְׁלֹמֹהben-She/lo/MOthe son of Solomonוּרְחַבְעָםu/Re/chav/AMand Rehoboamהָיָהha/YAwasנַעַרNA/aryoungוְרַךְ־לֵבָבve/RAKH-le/VAVand tender of heartוְלֹאve/LOand notהִתְחַזַּקhit/chaz/ZAKhe was strongלִפְנֵיהֶם׃lif/ne/HEMdown before them

   And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.

   And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.

   הֲלֹאha/LOhave you notהִדַּחְתֶּםhid/dach/TEMdriven outאֶת־כֹּהֲנֵיet-ko/ha/NEthe priests ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶת־בְּנֵיet-be/NEthe sons ofאַהֲרֹןA/ha/RONAaronוְהַלְוִיִּםVe/hal/viy/YIMand the Levitesוַתַּעֲשׂוּvat/ta/a/SUand madeלָכֶםla/KHEMfor yourselvesכֹּהֲנִיםko/ha/NIMpriestsכְּעַמֵּיke/am/MElike the peoples ofהָאֲרָצוֹתha/a/ra/TSOTthe landsכׇּל־הַבָּאkol-hab/BAwhoever comesלְמַלֵּאle/mal/LEto fillיָדוֹya/DOhis handבְּפַרbe/FARwith a bullבֶּן־בָּקָרben-ba/KARof the herdוְאֵילִםve/e/LIMand ramsשִׁבְעָהshiv/Asevenוְהָיָהve/ha/YAbecomesכֹהֵןkho/HENa priestלְלֹאle/LOof noאֱלֹהִים׃e/lo/HIMgods

   Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.

    וַאֲנַחְנוּva/a/NACH/nubut as for usיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֱלֹהֵינוּe/lo/HE/nuour Godוְלֹאve/LOand notעֲזַבְנֻהוּa/zav/NU/huwe have forsaken Himוְכֹהֲנִיםve/kho/ha/NIMand priestsמְשָׁרְתִיםme/sha/re/TIMministerלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDבְּנֵיbe/NEthe sons ofאַהֲרֹןA/ha/RONAaronוְהַלְוִיִּםVe/hal/viy/YIMand the Levitesבַּמְלָאכֶת׃bam/LA/khetat the work

    But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business:

11. 11

    וּמַקְטִרִיםu/mak/ti/RIMand burnלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDעֹלוֹתo/LOTburnt offeringsבַּבֹּקֶר־בַּבֹּקֶרbab/BO/ker-bab/BO/kermorning by morningוּבָעֶרֶב־בָּעֶרֶבu/va/E/rev-ba/E/revand evening by eveningוּקְטֹרֶת־סַמִּיםu/ke/TO/ret-sam/MIMand sweet incenseוּמַעֲרֶכֶתu/ma/a/RE/khetand the row ofלֶחֶםLE/chembreadעַל־הַשֻּׁלְחָןal-hash/shul/CHANupon the tableהַטָּהוֹרhat/ta/HORpureוּמְנוֹרַתu/me/no/RATand the lampstand ofהַזָּהָבhaz/za/HAVgoldוְנֵרֹתֶיהָve/ne/ro/TE/haand its lampsלְבָעֵרle/va/ERto burnבָּעֶרֶבba/E/revin the eveningבָּעֶרֶבba/E/revin the eveningכִּי־שֹׁמְרִיםki-shom/RIMfor keepאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweאֶת־מִשְׁמֶרֶתet-mish/ME/retthe charge ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֱלֹהֵינוּe/lo/HE/nuour Godוְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMand youעֲזַבְתֶּםa/zav/TEMyou have forsakenאֹתוֹ׃o/TOHim

    And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken him.

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdעִמָּנוּim/MA/nuwith usבָרֹאשׁva/ROSHat our headהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodוְכֹהֲנָיוve/kho/ha/NAYVand His priestsוַחֲצֹצְרוֹתva/cha/tsots/ROTand the trumpets ofהַתְּרוּעָהhat/te/ru/Aalarmלְהָרִיעַle/ha/RI/ato sound the alarmעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMagainst youבְּנֵיbe/NEO children ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelאַל־תִּלָּחֲמוּal-til/la/cha/MUdo not fightעִם־יְהֹוָהim-Adonaiagainst the LORDאֱלֹהֵי־אֲבֹתֵיכֶםe/lo/HE-a/vo/te/KHEMthe God of your fathersכִּי־לֹאki-lofor notתַצְלִיחוּ׃tats/LI/chuwill you prosper

    And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.

13. 13

    וְיָרׇבְעָםve/Ya/rov/AMand Jeroboamהֵסֵבhe/SEVcaused to circleאֶת־הַמַּאְרָבet-ham/ma/RAVthe ambushלָבוֹאla/VOto comeמֵאַחֲרֵיהֶםme/a/cha/re/HEMfrom behind themוַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUso they wereלִפְנֵיlif/NEin front ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוְהַמַּאְרָבve/ham/ma/RAVand the ambushמֵאַחֲרֵיהֶם׃me/a/cha/re/HEMbehind them

    But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.

14. 14

    וַיִּפְנוּvay/yif/NUand turnedיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdלָהֶםla/HEMfor themהַמִּלְחָמָהham/mil/cha/MAthe battle wasפָּנִיםpa/NIMbeforeוְאָחוֹרve/a/CHORand behindוַיִּצְעֲקוּvay/yits/a/KUand they cried outלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDוְהַכֹּהֲנִיםve/hak/ko/ha/NIMand the priests(מחצצרים)machatsatsarayam[מַחְצְרִים]mach/tse/RIMblowingבַּחֲצֹצְרוֹת׃ba/cha/tsots/ROTwith the trumpets

    And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.

15. 15

    וַיָּרִיעוּvay/ya/RI/uand gave a shoutאִישׁishthe men ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passבְּהָרִיעַbe/ha/RI/aas shoutedאִישׁishthe men ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוְהָאֱלֹהִיםve/ha/e/lo/HIMand Godנָגַףna/GAFstruckאֶת־יָרׇבְעָםet-Ya/rov/AMJeroboamוְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/KHOL-yis/ra/ELand all Israelלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאֲבִיָּהA/viy/YAAbijahוִיהוּדָה׃Vi/hu/DAand Judah

    Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

    וַיָּנוּסוּvay/ya/NU/suand they fledבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbeforeיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוַיִּתְּנֵםvay/yit/te/NEMand gave themאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodבְּיָדָם׃be/ya/DAMinto their hand

    And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand.

17. 17

    וַיַּכּוּvay/yak/KUand they struckבָהֶםva/HEMthemאֲבִיָּהA/viy/YAAbijahוְעַמּוֹve/am/MOand his peopleמַכָּהmak/KAa slaughterרַבָּהrab/BAgreatוַיִּפְּלוּvay/yip/pe/LUand fellחֲלָלִיםcha/la/LIMslainמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלmiy/Yis/ra/ELof Israelחֲמֵשׁ־מֵאוֹתcha/MESH-me/OTfive hundredאֶלֶףE/lefthousandאִישׁishmenבָּחוּר׃ba/CHURchosen

    And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

18. 18

    וַיִּכָּנְעוּvay/yik/ka/ne/Uthus were humbledבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/NE-yis/ra/ELthe children of Israelבָּעֵתba/ETat the timeהַהִיאha/HIthatוַיֶּאֶמְצוּvay/ye/em/TSUand prevailedבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahכִּיkibecauseנִשְׁעֲנוּnish/a/NUthey reliedעַל־יְהֹוָהal-Adonaiupon the LORDאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofאֲבוֹתֵיהֶם׃a/vo/te/HEMtheir fathers

    Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers.

    וַיִּרְדֹּףvay/yir/DOFand pursuedאֲבִיָּהA/viy/YAAbijahאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterיָרׇבְעָםYa/rov/AMJeroboamוַיִּלְכֹּדvay/yil/KODand tookמִמֶּנּוּmim/MEN/nufrom himעָרִיםa/RIMcitiesאֶת־בֵּית־אֵלet-Bet-elBeth-elוְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶיהָve/ET-be/no/TE/haand its villagesוְאֶת־יְשָׁנָהve/ET-ye/sha/NAand Jeshanahוְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֶיהָve/ET-be/no/TE/haand its villagesוְאֶת־(עפרון)ve/ET-faravanand[עֶפְרַיִן]Ef/RA/yinEphrainוּבְנֹתֶיהָ׃u/ve/no/TE/haand its villages

    And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Beth-el with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof.

20. 20

    וְלֹא־עָצַרve/LO-a/TSARand did not recoverכֹּחַ־יָרׇבְעָםKO/ach-Ya/rov/AMthe strength of Jeroboamעוֹדodagainבִּימֵיbi/MEin the days ofאֲבִיָּהוּA/viy/YA/huAbijahוַיִּגְּפֵהוּvay/yig/ge/FE/huand struck himיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוַיָּמֹת׃vay/ya/MOTand he died

    Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.

21. 21

    וַיִּתְחַזֵּקvay/yit/chaz/ZEKbut grew strongאֲבִיָּהוּA/viy/YA/huAbijahוַיִּשָּׂא־לוֹvay/yis/SA-loand took for himselfנָשִׁיםna/SHIMwivesאַרְבַּע־עֶשְׂרֵהar/BA-es/REfourteenוַיּוֹלֶדvay/YO/ledand begatעֶשְׂרִיםes/RIMtwentyוּשְׁנַיִםu/she/NA/yimand twoבָּנִיםba/NIMsonsוְשֵׁשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵהve/SHESH-es/REand sixteenבָּנוֹת׃ba/NOTdaughters

    But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.

    וְיֶתֶרve/YE/terand the rest ofדִּבְרֵיdiv/REthe acts ofאֲבִיָּהA/viy/YAAbijahוּדְרָכָיוu/de/ra/KHAYVand his waysוּדְבָרָיוu/de/va/RAYVand his sayingsכְּתוּבִיםke/tu/VIMare writtenבְּמִדְרַשׁbe/mid/RASHin the commentary ofהַנָּבִיאhan/na/VIthe prophetעִדּוֹ׃Id/DOIddo

    And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.

    וַיִּשְׁכַּבvay/yish/KAVand sleptאֲבִיָּהA/viy/YAAbijahעִם־אֲבֹתָיוim-a/vo/TAYVwith his fathersוַיִּקְבְּרוּvay/yik/be/RUand they buriedאֹתוֹo/TOhimבְּעִירbe/IRin the city ofדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidוַיִּמְלֹךְvay/yim/LOKHand reignedאָסָאA/SAAsaבְנוֹve/NOhis sonתַּחְתָּיוtach/TAYVin his placeבְּיָמָיוbe/ya/MAYVin his daysשָׁקְטָהsha/ke/TAwas quietהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landעֶשֶׂרE/sertenשָׁנִים׃sha/NIMyears

    So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
