   וַיְהִיand it came to passכְּהָכִיןwhen establishedמַלְכוּתthe reign ofרְחַבְעָםRehoboamוּכְחֶזְקָתוֹand his according to strengtheningעָזַבleftאֶת־תּוֹרַתthe law ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלand all Israelעִמּוֹ׃with him

   And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.

2. 2

   וַיְהִיand it came to passבַּשָּׁנָהin the yearהַחֲמִישִׁיתthe fifthלַמֶּלֶךְof kingרְחַבְעָםRehoboamעָלָהascendedשִׁישַׁקShishakמֶלֶךְ־מִצְרַיִםking of Egyptעַל־יְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִםupon Jerusalemכִּיbecauseמָעֲלוּthey acted unfaithfullyבַּיהֹוָה׃against the LORD

   And it came to pass, that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had transgressed against the LORD,

   בְּאֶלֶףwith a thousandוּמָאתַיִםand two hundredרֶכֶבchariotryוּבְשִׁשִּׁיםand with sixtyאֶלֶףthousandפָּרָשִׁיםhorsemenוְאֵיןand there is noמִסְפָּרnumberלָעָםto the peopleאֲשֶׁר־בָּאוּwhich cameעִמּוֹwith himמִמִּצְרַיִםout of EgyptלוּבִיםLibyansסֻכִּיִּיםSukkitesוְכוּשִׁים׃and Cushites

   With twelve hundred chariots, and threescore thousand horsemen: and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt; the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians.

   וַיִּלְכֹּדand he capturedאֶת־עָרֵיcities ofהַמְּצֻרוֹתthe fortificationsאֲשֶׁרwhichלִיהוּדָהto Judahוַיָּבֹאand cameעַד־יְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִם׃until Jerusalem

   And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah, and came to Jerusalem.

   וּשְׁמַעְיָהand Shemaiahהַנָּבִיאthe prophetבָּאcameאֶל־רְחַבְעָםto Rehoboamוְשָׂרֵיand captains ofיְהוּדָהJudahאֲשֶׁר־נֶאֶסְפוּwhich gatheredאֶל־יְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםto Jerusalemמִפְּנֵיbecause ofשִׁישָׁקShishakוַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהֶםto themכֹּה־אָמַרthus saysיְהֹוָהthe LORDאַתֶּםyou areעֲזַבְתֶּםyou have forsakenאֹתִיmeוְאַף־אֲנִיand yet IעָזַבְתִּיI have abandonedאֶתְכֶםyouבְּיַד־שִׁישָׁק׃in the hand of Shishak

   Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Ye have forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.

   וַיִּכָּנְעוּand they submittedשָׂרֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵלcaptains of Israelוְהַמֶּלֶךְand the kingוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidצַדִּיקrighteousיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

   Whereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, The LORD is righteous.

   וּבִרְאוֹתand when sawיְהֹוָהthe LORDכִּיthatנִכְנָעוּthey had humbled themselvesהָיָהwasדְבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDאֶל־שְׁמַעְיָהto Shemaiahלֵאמֹרsayingנִכְנְעוּthey did humble themselvesלֹאnotאַשְׁחִיתֵםI will destroy themוְנָתַתִּיand I will giveלָהֶםto themכִּמְעַטnearlyלִפְלֵיטָהan escaped remnantוְלֹא־תִתַּךְand not it will pour forthחֲמָתִיmy wrathבִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםin Jerusalemבְּיַד־שִׁישָׁק׃in the hand of Shishak

   And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

   כִּיthatיִהְיוּ־לוֹshall be himלַעֲבָדִיםfor servantsוְיֵדְעוּand knowעֲבוֹדָתִיmy laborוַעֲבוֹדַתand worship ofמַמְלְכוֹתthe kingdoms ofהָאֲרָצוֹת׃the lands

   Nevertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.

   וַיַּעַלand he came upשִׁישַׁקShishakמֶלֶךְ־מִצְרַיִםking of Egyptעַל־יְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִםupon Jerusalemוַיִּקַּחand tookאֶת־אֹצְרוֹתthe treasures ofבֵּית־יְהֹוָהthe house of the LORDוְאֶת־אֹצְרוֹתand the treasures ofבֵּיתthe house ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingאֶת־הַכֹּלeverythingלָקָחhe tookוַיִּקַּחand tookאֶת־מָגִנֵּיthe shields ofהַזָּהָבthe goldאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂהhe didשְׁלֹמֹה׃Solomon

   So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king's house; he took all: he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

10. 10

    וַיַּעַשׂand madeהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingרְחַבְעָםRehoboamתַּחְתֵּיהֶםin their steadמָגִנֵּיthe shields ofנְחֹשֶׁתbrassוְהִפְקִידand he entrusted themעַל־יַדbesideשָׂרֵיcaptains ofהָרָצִיםthe runnersהַשֹּׁמְרִיםthe ones who keepפֶּתַחdoor ofבֵּיתthe house ofהַמֶּלֶךְ׃the king

    Instead of which king Rehoboam made shields of brass, and committed them to the hands of the chief of the guard, that kept the entrance of the king's house.

    וַיְהִיand it came to passמִדֵּי־בוֹאas often as cameהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingבֵּיתthe house ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDבָּאוּcameהָרָצִיםthe runnersוּנְשָׂאוּםand they carried themוֶהֱשִׁבוּםand they returned themאֶל־תָּאto the guardroom ofהָרָצִים׃the runners

    And when the king entered into the house of the LORD, the guard came and fetched them, and brought them again into the guard chamber.

12. 12

    וּבְהִכָּנְעוֹand when he humbled himselfשָׁבreturnedמִמֶּנּוּfrom himאַף־יְהֹוָהthe anger of the LORDוְלֹאand notלְהַשְׁחִיתto destroyלְכָלָהto complete destructionוְגַםand alsoבִּיהוּדָהin Judahהָיָהwasדְּבָרִיםwordsטוֹבִים׃good

    And when he humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him, that he would not destroy him altogether: and also in Judah things went well.

13. 13

    וַיִּתְחַזֵּקand strengthened himselfהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingרְחַבְעָםRehoboamבִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםin Jerusalemוַיִּמְלֹךְand he did reignכִּיbecauseבֶן־אַרְבָּעִיםson of fortyוְאַחַתand oneשָׁנָהyearרְחַבְעָםRehoboamבְּמׇלְכוֹwhen he began to reignוּשְׁבַע־עֶשְׂרֵהand seventeenשָׁנָהyearsמָלַךְreignedבִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםin Jerusalemהָעִירthe cityאֲשֶׁר־בָּחַרwhich choseיְהֹוָהthe LORDלָשׂוּםto putאֶת־שְׁמוֹhis nameשָׁםthereמִכֹּלof allשִׁבְטֵיtribes ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוְשֵׁםand the name ofאִמּוֹhis motherנַעֲמָהNaamahהָעַמֹּנִית׃the Ammonite woman

    So king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned: for Rehoboam was one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother's name was Naamah an Ammonitess.

14. 14

    וַיַּעַשׂand he didהָרָעthat which is evilכִּיbecauseלֹאnotהֵכִיןpreparedלִבּוֹhis heartלִדְרוֹשׁto seekאֶת־יְהֹוָה׃the LORD

    And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.

15. 15

    וְדִבְרֵיand the words ofרְחַבְעָםRehoboamהָרִאשֹׁנִיםthe firstוְהָאַחֲרוֹנִיםand the lastהֲלֹא־הֵםis it not theyכְּתוּבִיםthere are writtenבְּדִבְרֵיwith the words ofשְׁמַעְיָהShemaiahהַנָּבִיאthe prophetוְעִדּוֹand Iddoהַחֹזֶהthe seerלְהִתְיַחֵשׂto have themselves enrolledוּמִלְחֲמוֹתand the wars ofרְחַבְעָםRehoboamוְיָרׇבְעָםand Jeroboamכׇּל־הַיָּמִים׃all the days

    Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

16. 16

    וַיִּשְׁכַּבand sleptרְחַבְעָםRehoboamעִם־אֲבֹתָיוwith his fathersוַיִּקָּבֵרand was buriedבְּעִירin the city ofדָּוִידDavidוַיִּמְלֹךְand he did reignאֲבִיָּהAbijahבְנוֹhis sonתַּחְתָּיו׃in his stead

    And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David: and Abijah his son reigned in his stead.
