1. 1

   וַיְהִיand-it-came-to-passאֲרוֹן־יְהֹוָהthe-ark-of-the-LORDבִּשְׂדֵהin-the-country-ofפְלִשְׁתִּיםthe-Philistinesשִׁבְעָהsevenחֳדָשִׁים׃months

   And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

2. 2

   וַיִּקְרְאוּand-they-calledפְלִשְׁתִּיםthe-Philistinesלַכֹּהֲנִיםfor-the-priestsוְלַקֹּסְמִיםand-magiciansלֵאמֹרsayingמַה־נַּעֲשֶׂהwhat-shall-we-doלַאֲרוֹןto-the-ark-ofיְהֹוָהthe-LORDהוֹדִעֻנוּtell-usבַּמֶּהhowנְשַׁלְּחֶנּוּwe-shall-send-itלִמְקוֹמוֹ׃to-its-place

   And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּand-they-saidאִם־מְשַׁלְּחִיםif-you-send-awayאֶת־אֲרוֹןthe-ark-ofאֱלֹהֵיthe-God-ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelאַל־תְּשַׁלְּחוּsend-notאֹתוֹitרֵיקָםemptyכִּי־הָשֵׁבbut-make-sureתָּשִׁיבוּto-returnלוֹto-himאָשָׁםa-guilt-offeringאָזthenתֵּרָפְאוּyou-shall-be-healedוְנוֹדַעand-you-will-learnלָכֶםto-youלָמָּהwhyלֹא־תָסוּרis-not-removedיָדוֹHis-handמִכֶּם׃from-you

   And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּand-they-saidמָהwhatהָאָשָׁםthe-guilt-offeringאֲשֶׁרwhichנָשִׁיבwe-shall-returnלוֹto-himוַיֹּאמְרוּand-they-saidמִסְפַּרaccording-to-the-number-ofסַרְנֵיthe-lords-ofפְלִשְׁתִּיםthe-Philistinesחֲמִשָּׁהfive[טְחֹרֵי]swellings-ofזָהָבgoldוַחֲמִשָּׁהand-fiveעַכְבְּרֵיmice-ofזָהָבgoldכִּי־מַגֵּפָהfor-a-plagueאַחַתoneלְכֻלָּםon-you-allוּלְסַרְנֵיכֶם׃and-on-your-lords

   Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

   וַעֲשִׂיתֶםand-you-shall-makeצַלְמֵיimages-of[טְחֹרֵיכֶם]your-swellingsוְצַלְמֵיand-images-ofעַכְבְּרֵיכֶםyour-miceהַמַּשְׁחִיתִםthat-ravageאֶת־הָאָרֶץthe-landוּנְתַתֶּםand-you-shall-giveלֵאלֹהֵיto-the-God-ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelכָּבוֹדhonorאוּלַיperhapsיָקֵלHe-will-lightenאֶת־יָדוֹHis-handמֵעֲלֵיכֶםfrom-upon-youוּמֵעַלand-from-onאֱלֹהֵיכֶםyour-godsוּמֵעַלand-from-onאַרְצְכֶם׃your-land

   Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

   וְלָמָּהand-whyתְכַבְּדוּdo-you-hardenאֶת־לְבַבְכֶםyour-heartsכַּאֲשֶׁרasכִּבְּדוּhardenedמִצְרַיִםEgyptוּפַרְעֹהand-Pharaohאֶת־לִבָּםtheir-heartsהֲלוֹאis-it-notכַּאֲשֶׁרasהִתְעַלֵּלHe-wrought-inflictionsבָּהֶםin-themוַיְשַׁלְּחוּםdid-they-not-let-them-goוַיֵּלֵכוּ׃and-they-departed

   Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

   וְעַתָּהand-nowקְחוּtakeוַעֲשׂוּand-makeעֲגָלָהa-cartחֲדָשָׁהnewאֶחָתoneוּשְׁתֵּיand-twoפָרוֹתmilch-cowsעָלוֹתnursingאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־עָלָהthere-has-never-beenעֲלֵיהֶםupon-themעֹלa-yokeוַאֲסַרְתֶּםand-tieאֶת־הַפָּרוֹתthe-cowsבָּעֲגָלָהto-the-cartוַהֲשֵׁיבֹתֶםand-leaveבְּנֵיהֶםtheir-calvesמֵאַחֲרֵיהֶםbehind-themהַבָּיְתָה׃at-home

   Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:

   וּלְקַחְתֶּםand-takeאֶת־אֲרוֹןthe-ark-ofיְהֹוָהthe-LORDוּנְתַתֶּםand-layאֹתוֹitאֶל־הָעֲגָלָהto-the-cartוְאֵתandכְּלֵיthe-devices-ofהַזָּהָבthe-goldאֲשֶׁרwhichהֲשֵׁבֹתֶםyou-are-restoringלוֹto-himאָשָׁםfor-a-guilt-offeringתָּשִׂימוּputבָאַרְגַּזin-a-boxמִצִּדּוֹby-the-side-of-itוְשִׁלַּחְתֶּםand-send-awayאֹתוֹitוְהָלָךְ׃that-it-may-go

   And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.

   וּרְאִיתֶםand-seeאִם־דֶּרֶךְif-by-the-way-ofגְּבוּלוֹhis-borderיַעֲלֶהit-goes-upבֵּיתBeth-שֶׁמֶשׁshemeshהוּאheעָשָׂהhas-doneלָנוּto-usאֶת־הָרָעָהthe-evilהַגְּדוֹלָהthe-greatהַזֹּאתthisוְאִם־לֹאand-if-notוְיָדַעְנוּthen-we-shall-knowכִּיthatלֹאnotיָדוֹhis-handנָגְעָהthat-smoteבָּנוּusמִקְרֶהa-chanceהוּאheהָיָהthat-happenedלָנוּ׃to-us

   And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.

    וַיַּעֲשׂוּand-didהָאֲנָשִׁיםthe-menכֵּןthusוַיִּקְחוּand-they-tookשְׁתֵּיtwoפָרוֹתmilch-cowsעָלוֹתnursingוַיַּאַסְרוּםand-tied-themבָּעֲגָלָהto-the-cartוְאֶת־בְּנֵיהֶםand-their-calvesכָּלוּthey-shut-upבַבָּיִת׃at-home

    And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:

11. 11

    וַיָּשִׂמוּand-they-laidאֶת־אֲרוֹןthe-ark-ofיְהֹוָהthe-LORDאֶל־הָעֲגָלָהupon-the-cartוְאֵתandהָאַרְגַּזthe-boxוְאֵתandעַכְבְּרֵיthe-mice-ofהַזָּהָבthe-goldוְאֵתandצַלְמֵיthe-images-ofטְחֹרֵיהֶם׃their-swellings

    And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.

12. 12

    וַיִּשַּׁרְנָהand-took-the-straight-wayהַפָּרוֹתthe-cowsבַּדֶּרֶךְin-the-wayעַל־דֶּרֶךְby-the-road-ofבֵּיתBeth-שֶׁמֶשׁshemeshבִּמְסִלָּהalong-the-highwayאַחַתoneהָלְכוּthey-wentהָלֹךְgoing onוְגָעוֹand-lowingוְלֹא־סָרוּand-turned-not-asideיָמִיןright-handוּשְׂמֹאולor-to-the-leftוְסַרְנֵיand-the-lords-ofפְלִשְׁתִּיםthe-Philistinesהֹלְכִיםwentאַחֲרֵיהֶםafter-themעַד־גְּבוּלto-the-border-ofבֵּיתBeth-שָׁמֶשׁ׃shemesh

    And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.

    וּבֵיתand-Beth-שֶׁמֶשׁshemeshקֹצְרִיםwere-reapingקְצִיר־חִטִּיםtheir-wheat-harvestבָּעֵמֶקin-the-valleyוַיִּשְׂאוּand-they-lifted-upאֶת־עֵינֵיהֶםtheir-eyesוַיִּרְאוּand-they-sawאֶת־הָאָרוֹןthe-arkוַיִּשְׂמְחוּand-rejoicedלִרְאוֹת׃to-see-it

    And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

14. 14

    וְהָעֲגָלָהand-the-cartבָּאָהcameאֶל־שְׂדֵהto-the-field-ofיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaבֵּית־הַשִּׁמְשִׁיa-man-of-Beth-shemeshוַתַּעֲמֹדand-stoodשָׁםthereוְשָׁםwhere-there-wasאֶבֶןa-stoneגְּדוֹלָהgreatוַיְבַקְּעוּand-they-splitאֶת־עֲצֵיthe-wood-ofהָעֲגָלָהthe-cartוְאֶת־הַפָּרוֹתand-the-cowsהֶעֱלוּthey-offeredעֹלָהas-a-burnt-offeringלַיהֹוָה׃to-the-LORD

    And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.

15. 15

    וְהַלְוִיִּםand-the-Levitesהוֹרִידוּtook-downאֶת־אֲרוֹןthe-ark-ofיְהֹוָהthe-LORDוְאֶת־הָאַרְגַּזand-the-boxאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹthat-was-with-itאֲשֶׁר־בּוֹin-which-wereכְלֵי־זָהָבthe-devices-of-goldוַיָּשִׂמוּand-put-themאֶל־הָאֶבֶןon-the-stoneהַגְּדוֹלָהthe-greatוְאַנְשֵׁיand-the-men-ofבֵית־שֶׁמֶשׁBeth-shemeshהֶעֱלוּofferedעֹלוֹתburnt-offeringsוַיִּזְבְּחוּand-sacrificedזְבָחִיםsacrificesבַּיּוֹםin-the-dayהַהוּאthatלַיהֹוָה׃to-the-LORD

    And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.

16. 16

    וַחֲמִשָּׁהand-fiveסַרְנֵי־פְלִשְׁתִּיםthe-lords-of-the-Philistinesרָאוּhad-seen-itוַיָּשֻׁבוּand-they-returnedעֶקְרוֹןto-Ekronבַּיּוֹםin-the-dayהַהוּא׃that

    And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

17. 17

    וְאֵלֶּהand-theseטְחֹרֵיswellings-ofהַזָּהָבthe-goldאֲשֶׁרwhichהֵשִׁיבוּreturnedפְלִשְׁתִּיםthe-Philistinesאָשָׁםfor-a-guilt-offeringלַיהֹוָהto-the-LORDלְאַשְׁדּוֹדfor-Ashdodאֶחָדoneלְעַזָּהfor-Gazaאֶחָדoneלְאַשְׁקְלוֹןfor-Ashkelonאֶחָדoneלְגַתfor-Gathאֶחָדoneלְעֶקְרוֹןfor-Ekronאֶחָד׃one

    And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

    וְעַכְבְּרֵיand-the-mice-ofהַזָּהָבthe-goldמִסְפַּרaccording-to-the-number-ofכׇּל־עָרֵיall-the-cities-ofפְלִשְׁתִּיםthe-Philistinesלַחֲמֵשֶׁתbelonging-to-the-fiveהַסְּרָנִיםlordsמֵעִירboth-city-ofמִבְצָרfortressוְעַדand-untoכֹּפֶרopenהַפְּרָזִיvillagesוְעַדand-untoאָבֵלthe-stoneהַגְּדוֹלָהthe-greatאֲשֶׁרwhichהִנִּיחוּthey-set-downעָלֶיהָupon-itאֵת־אֲרוֹןthe-ark-ofיְהֹוָהthe-LORDעַדuntilהַיּוֹםthe-dayהַזֶּהthisבִּשְׂדֵהin-the-field-ofיְהוֹשֻׁעַJoshuaבֵּיתBeth-הַשִּׁמְשִׁי׃shimshite

    And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-shemite.

19. 19

    וַיַּךְand-smoteבְּאַנְשֵׁיthe-men-ofבֵית־שֶׁמֶשׁBeth-shemeshכִּיbecauseרָאוּthey-had-looked-intoבַּאֲרוֹןinto-the-ark-ofיְהֹוָהthe-LORDוַיַּךְand-he-smoteבָּעָםof-the-peopleשִׁבְעִיםseventyאִישׁmenחֲמִשִּׁיםfiftyאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenוַיִּתְאַבְּלוּand-lamentedהָעָםthe-peopleכִּי־הִכָּהbecause-had-smittenיְהֹוָהthe-LORDבָּעָםof-the-peopleמַכָּהwith-a-slaughterגְדוֹלָה׃great

    And he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

20. 20

    וַיֹּאמְרוּand-saidאַנְשֵׁיthe-men-ofבֵית־שֶׁמֶשׁBeth-shemeshמִיwhoיוּכַלcanלַעֲמֹדto-standלִפְנֵיbeforeיְהֹוָהthe-LORDהָאֱלֹהִיםthe-Godהַקָּדוֹשׁthe-holyהַזֶּהthisוְאֶל־מִיand-to-whomיַעֲלֶהshall-He-go-upמֵעָלֵינוּ׃from-us

    And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

21. 21

    וַיִּשְׁלְחוּand-sentמַלְאָכִיםmessengersאֶל־יוֹשְׁבֵיto-the-inhabitants-ofקִרְיַת־יְעָרִיםKiriath-Jearimלֵאמֹרsayingהֵשִׁבוּhave-brought-backפְלִשְׁתִּיםthe-Philistinesאֶת־אֲרוֹןthe-ark-ofיְהֹוָהthe-LORDרְדוּcome-downהַעֲלוּand-fetch-upאֹתוֹitאֲלֵיכֶם׃unto-you

    And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.
