   Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.

   וְשָׁאוּלve/Sha/ULand Saulיוֹשֵׁבyo/SHEVwas stayingבִּקְצֵהbik/TSEin the outskirts ofהַגִּבְעָהHag/giv/AGibeahתַּחַתTA/chatunderהָרִמּוֹןha/rim/MONthe pomegranate treeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich isבְּמִגְרוֹןbe/Mig/RONin Migronוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereעִמּוֹim/MOwith himכְּשֵׁשׁke/SHESHabout sixמֵאוֹתme/OThundredאִישׁ׃ishmen

   And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;

   And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, I-chabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

   And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

   The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהוֹנָתָןYe/ho/na/TANJonathanאֶל־הַנַּעַרel-han/NA/arto the young manנֹשֵׂאno/SEwho boreכֵלָיוkhe/LAYVhis armorלְכָהle/KHAcomeוְנַעְבְּרָהve/na/be/RAand let us cross overאֶל־מַצַּבel-mats/TSAVto the garrison ofהָעֲרֵלִיםha/a/re/LIMthe uncircumcisedהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseאוּלַיu/LAYperhapsיַעֲשֶׂהya/a/SEwill actיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDלָנוּLA/nufor usכִּיkiforאֵיןenthere is noלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaiwith the LORDמַעְצוֹרma/TSORrestraintלְהוֹשִׁיעַle/ho/SHI/ato saveבְּרַבbe/RAVby manyאוֹoorבִמְעָט׃vim/ATby few

   And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹloto himנֹשֵׂאno/SEthe bearer ofכֵלָיוkhe/LAYVhis armorעֲשֵׂהa/SEdoכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרkol-a/SHERall thatבִּלְבָבֶךָbil/va/VE/khais in your heartנְטֵהne/TEturnלָךְlakhyourselfהִנְנִיhin/NIbehold I amעִמְּךָim/me/KHAwith youכִּלְבָבֶךָ׃kil/va/VE/khaaccording to your heart

   And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהוֹנָתָןYe/ho/na/TANJonathanהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweעֹבְרִיםov/RIMwill cross overאֶל־הָאֲנָשִׁיםel-ha/a/na/SHIMto the menוְנִגְלִינוּve/nig/LI/nuand we will show ourselvesאֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMto them

   Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.

   אִם־כֹּהim-koif thusיֹאמְרוּyo/me/RUthey sayאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuto usדֹּמּוּDOM/muwaitעַד־הַגִּיעֵנוּad-hag/gi/E/nuuntil we comeאֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMto youוְעָמַדְנוּve/a/MAD/nuthen we will standתַחְתֵּינוּtach/TE/nuin our placeוְלֹאve/LOand notנַעֲלֶהna/a/LEgo upאֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMto them

   If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.

    וְאִם־כֹּהve/IM-koand if thusיֹאמְרוּyo/me/RUthey sayעֲלוּa/LUcome upעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuto usוְעָלִינוּve/a/LI/nuthen we will go upכִּי־נְתָנָםki-ne/ta/NAMfor has given themיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבְּיָדֵנוּbe/ya/DE/nuinto our handוְזֶה־לָּנוּve/ZE-LA/nuand this shall be to usהָאוֹת׃ha/OTthe sign

    But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.

    וַיִּגָּלוּvay/yig/ga/LUand showed themselvesשְׁנֵיהֶםshe/ne/HEMboth of themאֶל־מַצַּבel-mats/TSAVto the garrison ofפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdעִבְרִיםIv/RIMHebrewsיֹצְאִיםyots/IMare coming outמִן־הַחֹרִיםmin-ha/cho/RIMout of the holesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהִתְחַבְּאוּ־שָׁם׃hit/chab/be/U-shamthey have hidden themselves in

    And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

    וַיַּעֲנוּvay/ya/a/NUand answeredאַנְשֵׁיan/SHEthe men ofהַמַּצָּבָהham/mats/tsa/VAthe garrisonאֶת־יוֹנָתָןet-Yo/na/TANJonathanוְאֶת־נֹשֵׂאve/ET-no/SEand the bearer ofכֵלָיוkhe/LAYVhis armorוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidעֲלוּa/LUcome upאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuto usוְנוֹדִיעָהve/no/DI/aand we will teachאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouדָּבָרda/VARa thingוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanאֶל־נֹשֵׂאel-no/SEto the bearer ofכֵלָיוkhe/LAYVhis armorעֲלֵהa/LEcome upאַחֲרַיa/cha/RAYafter meכִּי־נְתָנָםki-ne/ta/NAMfor has delivered themיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבְּיַדbe/YADinto the hand ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Yis/ra/ELIsrael

    And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.

    וַיַּעַלvay/YA/aland climbed upיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanעַל־יָדָיוal-ya/DAYVon his handsוְעַל־רַגְלָיוve/AL-rag/LAYVand on his feetוְנֹשֵׂאve/no/SEand the bearer ofכֵלָיוkhe/LAYVhis armorאַחֲרָיוa/cha/RAYVafter himוַיִּפְּלוּvay/yip/pe/LUand they fellלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanוְנֹשֵׂאve/no/SEand the bearer ofכֵלָיוkhe/LAYVhis armorמְמוֹתֵתme/mo/TETwas killing themאַחֲרָיו׃a/cha/RAYVafter him

    And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.

    וַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand wasהַמַּכָּהham/mak/KAthe slaughterהָרִאשֹׁנָהha/ri/sho/NAthe firstאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהִכָּהhik/KAstruckיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanוְנֹשֵׂאve/no/SEand the bearer ofכֵלָיוkhe/LAYVhis armorכְּעֶשְׂרִיםke/es/RIMabout twentyאִישׁishmenכְּבַחֲצִיke/va/cha/TSIwithin about halfמַעֲנָהma/a/NAa furrow ofצֶמֶדTSE/meda yoke ofשָׂדֶה׃sa/DEland

    And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.

    וַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand wasחֲרָדָהcha/ra/DAtremblingבַמַּחֲנֶהvam/ma/cha/NEin the campבַשָּׂדֶהvas/sa/DEin the fieldוּבְכׇל־הָעָםu/ve/KHOL-ha/AMand among all the peopleהַמַּצָּבham/mats/TSAVthe garrisonוְהַמַּשְׁחִיתve/ham/mash/CHITand the raidersחָרְדוּcha/re/DUtrembledגַּם־הֵמָּהgam-HEM/mathey alsoוַתִּרְגַּזvat/tir/GAZand quakedהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe earthוַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand wasלְחֶרְדַּתle/cher/DATa trembling ofאֱלֹהִים׃e/lo/HIMGod

    And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.

    וַיִּרְאוּvay/yir/Uand they sawהַצֹּפִיםhats/tso/FIMthe watchmenלְשָׁאוּלle/Sha/ULof Saulבְּגִבְעַתbe/Giv/ATin Gibeah ofבִּנְיָמִןBin/ya/MINBenjaminוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdהֶהָמוֹןhe/ha/MONthe multitudeנָמוֹגna/MOGmelted awayוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand they wentוַהֲלֹם׃va/ha/LOMand hither

    And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.

17. 17

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulלָעָםla/AMto the peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereאִתּוֹit/TOwith himפִּקְדוּ־נָאpik/DU-nanumber nowוּרְאוּu/re/Uand seeמִיmiwhoהָלַךְha/LAKHhas goneמֵעִמָּנוּme/im/MA/nufrom usוַיִּפְקְדוּvay/yif/ke/DUand they numberedוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdאֵיןenwere not thereיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanוְנֹשֵׂאve/no/SEand the bearer ofכֵלָיו׃khe/LAYVhis armor

    Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.

18. 18

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulלַאֲחִיָּהla/A/chiy/YAto Ahijahהַגִּישָׁהhag/GI/shabring hereאֲרוֹןa/RONthe ark ofהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodכִּי־הָיָהki-ha/YAfor wasאֲרוֹןa/RONthe ark ofהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatוּבְנֵיu/ve/NEwith the children ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Yis/ra/ELIsrael

    And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passעַדadwhileדִּבֶּרdib/BERspokeשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶל־הַכֹּהֵןel-hak/ko/HENto the priestוְהֶהָמוֹןve/he/ha/MONthat the tumultאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasבְּמַחֲנֵהbe/ma/cha/NEin the camp ofפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentהָלוֹךְha/LOKHgoingוָרָבva/RAVand increasedוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶל־הַכֹּהֵןel-hak/ko/HENto the priestאֱסֹףe/SOFwithdrawיָדֶךָ׃ya/DE/khayour hand

    And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.

    וַיִּזָּעֵקvay/yiz/za/EKand were gatheredשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulוְכׇל־הָעָםve/KHOL-ha/AMand all the peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereאִתּוֹit/TOwith himוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameעַד־הַמִּלְחָמָהad-ham/mil/cha/MAto the battleוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdהָיְתָהha/ye/TAwasחֶרֶבCHE/revthe sword ofאִישׁishevery manבְּרֵעֵהוּbe/re/E/huagainst his fellowמְהוּמָהme/hu/MAa confusionגְּדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatמְאֹד׃me/ODvery

    And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.

    וְהָעִבְרִיםve/Ha/iv/RIMand the Hebrewsהָיוּha/YUwereלַפְּלִשְׁתִּיםlap/Pe/lish/TIMwith the Philistinesכְּאֶתְמוֹלke/et/MOLas yesterdayשִׁלְשׁוֹםshil/SHOMand beforeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoעָלוּa/LUhad gone upעִמָּםim/MAMwith themבַּמַּחֲנֶהbam/ma/cha/NEinto the campסָבִיבsa/VIVround aboutוְגַם־הֵמָּהve/GAM-HEM/mathey alsoלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTturned to beעִם־יִשְׂרָאֵלim-Yis/ra/ELwith Israelאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereעִם־שָׁאוּלim-Sha/ULwith Saulוְיוֹנָתָן׃ve/Yo/na/TANand Jonathan

    Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.

22. 22

    וְכֹלve/KHOLand allאִישׁishthe men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelהַמִּתְחַבְּאִיםham/mit/chab/be/IMwho had hidden themselvesבְּהַר־אֶפְרַיִםbe/HAR-ef/RA/yimin the hill country of Ephraimשָׁמְעוּsha/me/Uheardכִּי־נָסוּki-NA/suthat had fledפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוַיַּדְבְּקוּvay/yad/be/KUand followed hardגַם־הֵמָּהgam-HEM/mathey alsoאַחֲרֵיהֶםa/cha/re/HEMafter themבַּמִּלְחָמָה׃bam/mil/cha/MAin the battle

    Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

23. 23

    וַיּוֹשַׁעvay/YO/shaso savedיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Yis/ra/ELIsraelוְהַמִּלְחָמָהve/ham/mil/cha/MAand the battleעָבְרָהa/ve/RApassed over toאֶת־בֵּיתet-BetBeth-אָוֶן׃A/venaven

    So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Beth-aven.

    וְאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/ISH-yis/ra/ELand the men of Israelנִגַּשׂnig/GASwere hard pressedבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatוַיֹּאֶלvay/YO/elfor had laid an oath onשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאָרוּרa/RURcursed beהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manאֲשֶׁר־יֹאכַלa/SHER-YO/khalwho eatsלֶחֶםLE/chemfoodעַד־הָעֶרֶבad-ha/E/revuntil eveningוְנִקַּמְתִּיve/nik/kam/TIand I am avengedמֵאֹיְבַיme/oy/VAYon my enemiesוְלֹא־טָעַםve/LO-ta/AMso none tastedכׇּל־הָעָםkol-ha/AMall the peopleלָחֶם׃LA/chemfood

    And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.

    וְכׇל־הָאָרֶץve/KHOL-ha/A/retsand all the landבָּאוּBA/ucameבַיָּעַרvay/YA/arinto the forestוַיְהִיvay/HIand there wasדְבַשׁde/VASHhoneyעַל־פְּנֵיal-pe/NEupon the face ofהַשָּׂדֶה׃has/sa/DEthe field

    And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.

26. 26

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֶל־הַיַּעַרel-hay/YA/arto the forestוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdהֵלֶךְHE/lekhflowingדְּבָשׁde/VASHhoneyוְאֵין־מַשִּׂיגve/EN-mas/SIGbut no one putיָדוֹya/DOhis handאֶל־פִּיוel-pivto his mouthכִּי־יָרֵאki-ya/REfor fearedהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֶת־הַשְּׁבֻעָה׃et-hash/she/vu/Athe oath

    And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.

    וְיוֹנָתָןve/Yo/na/TANand Jonathanלֹא־שָׁמַעlo-sha/MAhad not heardבְּהַשְׁבִּיעַbe/hash/BI/awhen charged with an oathאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand he put outאֶת־קְצֵהet-ke/TSEthe end ofהַמַּטֶּהham/mat/TEthe staffאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasבְּיָדוֹbe/ya/DOin his handוַיִּטְבֹּלvay/yit/BOLand dippedאוֹתָהּo/TAitבְּיַעְרַתbe/ya/RATin the honeycomb ofהַדְּבָשׁhad/de/VASHhoneyוַיָּשֶׁבvay/YA/shevand broughtיָדוֹya/DOhis handאֶל־פִּיוel-pivto his mouth[וַתָּאֹרְנָה]vat/ta/OR/naand brightenedעֵינָיו׃e/NAYVhis eyes

    But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

    וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anthen answeredאִישׁisha manמֵהָעָםme/ha/AMof the peopleוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַשְׁבֵּעַhash/BE/acharge with an oathהִשְׁבִּיעַhish/BI/acharged with an oathאָבִיךָa/VI/khayour fatherאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאָרוּרa/RURcursed beהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manאֲשֶׁר־יֹאכַלa/SHER-YO/khalwho eatsלֶחֶםLE/chemfoodהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthis dayוַיָּעַףvay/YA/afand were wearyהָעָם׃ha/AMthe people

    Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanעָכַרa/KHARhe has troubledאָבִיa/VImy fatherאֶת־הָאָרֶץet-ha/A/retsthe landרְאוּ־נָאre/U-nasee nowכִּי־אֹרוּki-O/ruhow are brightenedעֵינַיe/NAYmy eyesכִּיkibecauseטָעַמְתִּיta/AM/tiI have tastedמְעַטme/ATa littleדְּבַשׁde/VASHhoneyהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

30. 30

    אַףafhow much moreכִּיkiifלוּאluonlyאָכֹלa/KHOLeatאָכַלa/KHALhad eatenהַיּוֹםhay/YOMtodayהָעָםha/AMthe peopleמִשְּׁלַלmish/she/LALof the spoil ofאֹיְבָיוoy/VAYVhis enemiesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichמָצָאma/TSAthey foundכִּיkiforעַתָּהat/TAnowלֹא־רָבְתָהlo-ra/ve/TAhas not been greaterמַכָּהmak/KAthe slaughterבַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים׃bap/Pe/lish/TIMamong the Philistines

    How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

31. 31

    וַיַּכּוּvay/yak/KUand they struckבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatבַּפְּלִשְׁתִּיםbap/Pe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesמִמִּכְמָשׂmim/Mikh/MASfrom MichmashאַיָּלֹנָהAy/ya/LO/nato Aijalonוַיָּעַףvay/YA/afand were wearyהָעָםha/AMthe peopleמְאֹד׃me/ODvery

    And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.

32. 32

    (ויעש)vaysh[וַיַּעַט]vay/YA/atand rushedהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֶל־[הַשָּׁלָל]el-hash/sha/LALupon the spoil(שלל)shalalוַיִּקְחוּvay/yik/CHUand they tookצֹאןtsonsheepוּבָקָרu/va/KARand oxenוּבְנֵיu/ve/NEand calvesבָקָרva/KARof the herdוַיִּשְׁחֲטוּ־אָרְצָהvay/yish/cha/TU-AR/tsaand slaughtered them on the groundוַיֹּאכַלvay/YO/khaland ateהָעָםha/AMthe peopleעַל־הַדָּם׃al-had/DAMwith the blood

    And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.

33. 33

    וַיַּגִּידוּvay/yag/GI/duthen they toldלְשָׁאוּלle/Sha/ULto Saulלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdהָעָםha/AMthe peopleחֹטִאיםcho/TIYMare sinningלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaiagainst the LORDלֶאֱכֹלle/e/KHOLin eatingעַל־הַדָּםal-had/DAMwith the bloodוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidבְּגַדְתֶּםbe/gad/TEMyou have dealt treacherouslyגֹּלּוּ־אֵלַיGOL/lu-e/LAYroll to meהַיּוֹםhay/YOMnowאֶבֶןE/vena stoneגְּדוֹלָה׃ge/do/LAgreat

    Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.

34. 34

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulפֻּצוּPU/tsudisperseבָעָםva/AMamong the peopleוַאֲמַרְתֶּםva/a/mar/TEMand sayלָהֶםla/HEMto themהַגִּישׁוּhag/GI/shubringאֵלַיe/LAYto meאִישׁishevery manשׁוֹרוֹsho/ROhis oxוְאִישׁve/ISHand every manשְׂיֵהוּse/YE/huhis sheepוּשְׁחַטְתֶּםu/she/chat/TEMand slaughter themבָּזֶהba/ZEhereוַאֲכַלְתֶּםva/a/khal/TEMand you shall eatוְלֹא־תֶחֶטְאוּve/LO-te/chet/Uand do not sinלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaiagainst the LORDלֶאֱכֹלle/e/KHOLin eatingאֶל־הַדָּםel-had/DAMwith the bloodוַיַּגִּשׁוּvay/yag/GI/shuand broughtכׇל־הָעָםkhol-ha/AMall the peopleאִישׁishevery manשׁוֹרוֹsho/ROhis oxבְיָדוֹve/ya/DOin his handהַלַּיְלָהhal/LAY/lathat nightוַיִּשְׁחֲטוּ־שָׁם׃vay/yish/cha/TU-shamand slaughtered them there

    And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

35. 35

    וַיִּבֶןvay/YI/venand builtשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulמִזְבֵּחַmiz/BE/achan altarלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDאֹתוֹo/TOitהֵחֵלhe/CHELhe beganלִבְנוֹתliv/NOTto buildמִזְבֵּחַmiz/BE/achan altarלַיהֹוָה׃la-Adonaito the LORD

    And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.

36. 36

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulנֵרְדָהner/DAlet us go downאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe PhilistinesלַיְלָהLAY/laby nightוְנָבֹזָהve/na/VO/zaand plunderבָהֶםva/HEMthemעַד־אוֹרad-oruntil the light ofהַבֹּקֶרhab/BO/kerthe morningוְלֹא־נַשְׁאֵרve/LO-nash/ERand let us not leaveבָּהֶםba/HEMin themאִישׁisha manוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidכׇּל־הַטּוֹבkol-hat/TOVwhatever is goodבְּעֵינֶיךָbe/e/NE/khain your eyesעֲשֵׂהa/SEdoוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestנִקְרְבָהnik/re/VAlet us draw nearהֲלֹםha/LOMhereאֶל־הָאֱלֹהִים׃el-ha/e/lo/HIMto God

    And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.

37. 37

    וַיִּשְׁאַלvay/yish/ALand asked counselשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulבֵּאלֹהִיםbe/lo/HIMof Godהַאֵרֵדha/e/REDshall I go downאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesהֲתִתְּנֵםha/tit/te/NEMwill You deliver themבְּיַדbe/YADinto the hand ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוְלֹאve/LObut notעָנָהוּa/NA/huHe answered himבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּא׃ha/HUthat

    And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.

38. 38

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulגֹּשׁוּGO/shudraw nearהֲלֹםha/LOMhereכֹּלkolallפִּנּוֹתpin/NOTthe chiefs ofהָעָםha/AMthe peopleוּדְעוּu/de/Uand knowוּרְאוּu/re/Uand seeבַּמָּהbam/MAin whatהָיְתָהha/ye/TAhas beenהַחַטָּאתha/chat/TATthe sinהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisהַיּוֹם׃hay/YOMthis day

    And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

39. 39

    כִּיkiforחַי־יְהֹוָהchay-Adonaias the LORD livesהַמּוֹשִׁיעַham/mo/SHI/awho savesאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Yis/ra/ELIsraelכִּיkiforאִם־יֶשְׁנוֹim-yesh/NOthough it isבְּיוֹנָתָןbe/Yo/na/TANin Jonathanבְּנִיbe/NImy sonכִּיkiforמוֹתmotdieיָמוּתya/MUThe shall dieוְאֵיןve/ENbut there was noneעֹנֵהוּo/NE/huwho answered himמִכׇּל־הָעָם׃mik/KOL-ha/AMamong all the people

    For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

40. 40

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֶל־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵלel-Kol-yis/ra/ELto all Israelאַתֶּםat/TEMyouתִּהְיוּtih/YUbeלְעֵבֶרle/E/veron sideאֶחָדe/CHADoneוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iוְיוֹנָתָןve/Yo/na/TANand Jonathanבְּנִיbe/NImy sonנִהְיֶהnih/YEwill beלְעֵבֶרle/E/veron sideאֶחָדe/CHADoneוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand saidהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֶל־שָׁאוּלel-Sha/ULto Saulהַטּוֹבhat/TOVwhat is goodבְּעֵינֶיךָbe/e/NE/khain your eyesעֲשֵׂה׃a/SEdo

    Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

41. 41

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶל־יְהֹוָהel-Adonaito the LORDאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelהָבָהHA/vagiveתָמִיםta/MIMperfectוַיִּלָּכֵדvay/yil/la/KHEDand were takenיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanוְשָׁאוּלve/Sha/ULand Saulוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleיָצָאוּ׃ya/TSA/uescaped

    Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.

42. 42

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulהַפִּילוּhap/PI/lucast lotsבֵּינִיbe/NIbetween meוּבֵיןu/VENand betweenיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanבְּנִיbe/NImy sonוַיִּלָּכֵדvay/yil/la/KHEDand was takenיוֹנָתָן׃Yo/na/TANJonathan

    And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

43. 43

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶל־יוֹנָתָןel-Yo/na/TANto Jonathanהַגִּידָהhag/GI/datellלִּיlimeמֶהmewhatעָשִׂיתָהa/SI/tahave you doneוַיַּגֶּד־לוֹvay/YAG/ged-loand told himיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidטָעֹםta/OMtasteטָעַמְתִּיta/AM/tiI tastedבִּקְצֵהbik/TSEwith the end ofהַמַּטֶּהham/mat/TEthe staffאֲשֶׁר־בְּיָדִיa/SHER-be/ya/DIthat was in my handמְעַטme/ATa littleדְּבַשׁde/VASHhoneyהִנְנִיhin/NIhere I amאָמוּת׃a/MUTI must die

    Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.

44. 44

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulכֹּה־יַעֲשֶׂהko-ya/a/SEmay do soאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodוְכֹהve/KHOand moreיוֹסִףyo/SIFalsoכִּי־מוֹתki-motfor dieתָּמוּתta/MUTyou shall dieיוֹנָתָן׃Yo/na/TANJonathan

    And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.

45. 45

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֶל־שָׁאוּלel-Sha/ULto SaulהֲיוֹנָתָןHa/yo/na/TANshall Jonathanיָמוּתya/MUTdieאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoעָשָׂהa/SAhas wroughtהַיְשׁוּעָהhay/shu/Adeliveranceהַגְּדוֹלָהhag/ge/do/LAgreatהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלbe/Yis/ra/ELin Israelחָלִילָהcha/LI/lafar be itחַי־יְהֹוָהchay-Adonaias the LORD livesאִם־יִפֹּלim-yip/POLthere shall not fallמִשַּׂעֲרַתmis/sa/a/RATa hair ofרֹאשׁוֹro/SHOhis headאַרְצָהAR/tsato the groundכִּי־עִם־אֱלֹהִיםki-im-e/lo/HIMfor with Godעָשָׂהa/SAhe has workedהַיּוֹםhay/YOMdayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַיִּפְדּוּvay/yif/DUso ransomedהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֶת־יוֹנָתָןet-Yo/na/TANJonathanוְלֹא־מֵת׃ve/LO-metand he did not die

    And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

46. 46

    וַיַּעַלvay/YA/althen went upשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulמֵאַחֲרֵיme/a/cha/REfrom pursuingפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוּפְלִשְׁתִּיםu/Fe/lish/TIMand the Philistinesהָלְכוּha/le/KHUwentלִמְקוֹמָם׃lim/ko/MAMto their own place

    Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.

47. 47

    וְשָׁאוּלve/Sha/ULand Saulלָכַדla/KHADtookהַמְּלוּכָהham/me/lu/KHAthe kingshipעַל־יִשְׂרָאֵלal-Yis/ra/ELover Israelוַיִּלָּחֶםvay/yil/LA/chemand foughtסָבִיבsa/VIVon every sideבְּכׇל־אֹיְבָיוbe/KHOL-oy/VAYVagainst all his enemiesבְּמוֹאָבbe/Mo/AVagainst Moabוּבִבְנֵי־עַמּוֹןu/Viv/NE-am/MONand against the children of Ammonוּבֶאֱדוֹםu/Ve/e/DOMand against Edomוּבְמַלְכֵיu/ve/mal/KHEand against the kings ofצוֹבָהTso/VAZobahוּבַפְּלִשְׁתִּיםu/Vap/pe/lish/TIMand against the Philistinesוּבְכֹלu/ve/KHOLand whereverאֲשֶׁר־יִפְנֶהa/SHER-yif/NEhe turned himselfיַרְשִׁיעַ׃yar/SHI/ahe routed them

    So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.

48. 48

    וַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand he didחַיִלCHA/yilvaliantlyוַיַּךְvay/YAKHand struckאֶת־עֲמָלֵקet-A/ma/LEKAmalekוַיַּצֵּלvay/yats/TSELand deliveredאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Yis/ra/ELIsraelמִיַּדmiy/YADfrom the hand ofשֹׁסֵהוּ׃sho/SE/huthose who plundered them

    And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.

49. 49

    וַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUnow wereבְּנֵיbe/NEthe sons ofשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulיוֹנָתָןYo/na/TANJonathanוְיִשְׁוִיve/Yish/VIand Ishviוּמַלְכִּישׁוּעַu/Mal/ki/SHU/aand Melchi-shuaוְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the name ofשְׁתֵּיshtethe twoבְנֹתָיוve/no/TAYVhis daughtersשֵׁםshemthe name ofהַבְּכִירָהhab/be/khi/RAthe firstbornמֵרַבMe/RAVMerabוְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the name ofהַקְּטַנָּהhak/ke/tan/NAthe youngerמִיכַל׃Mi/KHALMichal

    Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchi-shua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:

    וְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the name ofאֵשֶׁתE/shetthe wife ofשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֲחִינֹעַםA/chi/NO/amAhinoamבַּת־אֲחִימָעַץbat-A/chi/MA/atsthe daughter of Ahimaazוְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the name ofשַׂר־צְבָאוֹsar-tse/va/Othe captain of his armyאֲבִינֵרA/vi/NERAbnerבֶּן־נֵרben-Nerthe son of Nerדּוֹדdodthe uncle ofשָׁאוּל׃Sha/ULSaul

    And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.

51. 51

    וְקִישׁve/KISHand Kishאֲבִי־שָׁאוּלa/VI-Sha/ULthe father of Saulוְנֵרve/NERand Nerאֲבִי־אַבְנֵרa/VI-Av/NERthe father of Abnerבֶּן־אֲבִיאֵל׃ben-A/vi/ELthe son of Abiel

    And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

52. 52

    וַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand wasהַמִּלְחָמָהham/mil/cha/MAthe battleחֲזָקָהcha/za/KAsevereעַל־פְּלִשְׁתִּיםal-Pe/lish/TIMagainst the Philistinesכֹּלkolallיְמֵיye/MEthe days ofשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulוְרָאָהve/ra/Aand whenever sawשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulכׇּל־אִישׁkol-ishany manגִּבּוֹרgib/BORmightyוְכׇל־בֶּן־חַיִלve/KHOL-ben-CHA/yilor any valiant manוַיַּאַסְפֵהוּvay/ya/as/FE/huhe took himאֵלָיו׃e/LAYVto himself

    And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.
